Amazing Heroes Swimsuit Special 1

Cover Dated June 1990

Amazing Heroes Swimsuit Special 1 Excalibur

Excalibur, including Kitty Pryde and Lockheed!  Drawn by Neil Vokes.  May be more risque than WordPress allows.  If it is, let me know before you let WordPress know, please and thanks.

I own this issue and the 1993 Swimsuit Special, along with all four Marvel ones.  I know Lockheed is in one of those.

Black Vortex Trailer

Thanks to YouTuber IGN for hosting the video!

I like when Marvel makes these trailers for their big events.  I wish Kitty showed up sooner than the 1:20 mark of a 1:53 trailer, especially with how Humphries has stated several times how she is crucial to the storyline.  I like how Magik and her fill up the last seconds of the trailer.

Black Vortex is coming, get excited!

Excalibur 22

Excalibur 22

Writer Chris Claremont

Artists Chris Wozniak & Al Milgrom

Letterer Tim Harkins

Colorist Brad Vancata

Chief Interrogator Tom DeFalco

Cover Dated May 1990

Issue opens with Nightcrawler being interrogated.  No one believes that he could be from an alternate universe.

Crusader-X flies to the Xavier School.  He flies into a female Archangel.  Cable is investigating the damage along with various police officers.  Crusader-X takes off his helmet, we see he has long black hair.

Rachel remembers her origins.  She fought the Shadow King and Mojo, already, she is ready for another round.

Proper Marvel Universe.  Kitty heads over to the Regent’s Park Zoo, where the four Warwolves are kept.  She taunts them, and walks away.  Their leader implies that they will regain two members soon.

Excalibur 22 Lockheed 1

A lady who looks like Kitty Pryde, in a green dress, walks outside.  Some street thugs start harassing her because she is Crusader-X’s girlfriend.  Lockheed shows up to save Kitty.

Look how great Wozniak’s Lockheed is!

Excalibur 22 Lockheed 2

Captain Britain balls up the thugs’ van.  That must be awkward with it between his legs.  Meggan keeps calling her, Kitty.  Kitty corrects her, she is the Courtney Ross of this Earth.  Which furthers the subplot of our Kitty and Courtney and why Courtney is so interested in Kitty.  I’m not sure if that is ever resolved.  I suppose we will find out.

Hellfire Club.  Rachel is told Iron Man and Shadow King’s big plan.  At the Queen’s birthday party, with all of the assembled world leaders, Iron Man is going to kill them all.  Jean Grey is suppose to be the head of security.  Rachel is going to fool people to believe she is her mother.

Over with Nightcrawler.  He is hitting on Alistaire’s sister.  On this Earth, he is the soldier and she is the scientist.  Crusader-X finds Kurt and tries to attack him.  Good thing Captain Britain shows up.  They are essentially evenly paired.

Hampton Court, with the World Summit.  Rachel successfully gets Iron Man into the building.  It is empty, as Rachel warned everyone ahead of time.  We get Iron Man vs Rachel.  Once she hits him with a psychic attack, the armor takes over.  Tony, weirdly, prerecorded a message, as he anticipated Shadow King turning on him.

Excalibur 22 Lockheed 3

Lockheed, Meggan and Courtney are watching the Braddock battle.  Rachel summons them to help her.  Meggan shows up, as Rachel passes out at her feet.

Excalibur 22 Lockheed 4

Lockheed gives a mega-roar, a move I didn’t give him on Pokemon but I could have.  This gets the attention of the Braddocks.  They see Iron Man has beaten Meggan, this doesn’t please them.

Excalibur 22 Lockheed 5

The police can’t hold Iron Man, as he only really hit two women, he didn’t try to kill any world leaders.  The police will be keeping an eye on him.

Next issue, Alan Davis returns!  He will do the final two parts of Cross Time Caper, and then a new creative team takes over.  Apparently, we’ve already seen them, so it is probably this issue’s creative team.

Two letters this issue – Bob Schreub Jr. of New Jersey and Jacqueline Middleton of Australia.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Three Issue 21

Guardians of the Galaxy V3 21

Artist Valerio Schiti

Colorist Jason Keith

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Guardians of the Galaxy V3 21 Credit Page

Usually I don’t post the recap page but look, Kitty Pryde is referenced!  That is crucial information!

Bendis made StarKat (Star Lord and Kitty Pryde) a couple at the end of Trial of Jean Grey – or at least, teased it there.  Sam Humphries over in his Legendary Star Lord series, has been the main writer of the relationship.  Bendis revisited them in All New X-Men 30, the only time we’ve seen Quill as a hologram.

I guess if I read the credits page of the Preview, I would have known Kitty was going to be in this issue.  I had known ahead of time as my pal, starlord215, posted this image from Schiti’s twitter account –

Gaurdains of the Galaxy V3 21 Kitty sketch

Which was pretty cool.  I’ve since started following Humphries on the Tweets.  Anyone who follows me (and I recommend you do!) knows that a group of us have been #StarKatNation bugging Humphries about wanting the couple to remain.

Tweets by JackalsIII

Some of the fans want Kitty in space full time, which I rather she just spent half of her time.  I’ve used the opportunity to promote that Lockheed needs to be in more comics.

This issue opens with a politician running for president of Spartax.  He’s running on an anti-Earth platform.  This Kree fellow hates Earth and gets loud in the bar.  The barkeep throws him out.  He is followed by someone.  That someone is Agent Venom, whose symbiote is out of control.  The Kree fellow was lying about going to Earth all of the time and is unable to get Venom back home.  So Venom kills him.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Home Ship.  The outskirts of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy V3 21 Kitty 1
Guardians of the Galaxy V3 21 Kitty 1a Guardians of the Galaxy V3 21 Kitty 1b

We see Quill and Pryde talking.  I like how she takes off her gloves to see him.  That’s pretty intimate.  Quill confesses to having sex with hundreds of space ladies.  Which, naturally, turns off her off.  At most, Kitty has had sex with two dudes.  I never got the impression that her and Bobby ever even made out that much.  Doop probably got farther with her than Bobby.

Guardians of the Galaxy V3 21 Kitty 2

Schiti draws a great Shadowcat.

Kitty is charmed by Quill’s confession that he doesn’t want to sleep with any more space ladies.  All he wanted to do was call her.  Which is a huge step for him.

Drax is killing an alien triceratops thingie.

Knowhere.  A port of call near the end of the universe.  Don’t ask for the Happy Frouhk.  I really like how we are just picking up right where Guardians issue 14 left off.  Which was the last issue I read, and the issue Flash was left on Knowhere with nothing to do.  He goes back to the arms dealer that we met that issue.

Gamora enters the arm dealer’s shop.  She recognizes Venom and he knows her but attacks her.  As they fight, Rocket zaps him and imprisons the symbiote.  With that, we are reminded that Flash Thompson has no legs.

Guardians of the Galaxy V3 21 Kitty Girlfriend Label

Quill reveals that Iron Man gave them a device to take down Venom, if necessary.  Flash wants to go back to Earth, he had control over the symbiote there.

Quill is all for going back to Earth so he can see his girlfriend, which is cool that he finally settled on a label for her.

The Guardian’s Ship.  Rocket is trying to find a more suitable container.  Groot touches the glass that it was sitting in, and the glass breaks.

Issue ends with Venom-Groot saying, I am Venom – so we know it is on.

Letterer Tom Orzechowski

Lord of all he surveys Tom DeFalco

Cover Dated April 1990

We jump right back into Cross Time Caper!  yay?

Fun homage cover to Excalibur 1!  Good job, Mr. Wozniak!  I like how Lockheed gets onto another cover!  Still a rarity!  It comes at a price, as Lockheed doesn’t appear in the issue itself.

Issue opens on Crusader-X’s Earth.  He is this Earth’s Captain Britain.  He is on patrol.  I sort of dig his costume design. I like the brown boots with matching shoulder pads.  He catches up with the science team, WHO – inspired by Doctor Who.  They have found Excalibur’s train that they have been using as a base.  Turns out that Nightcrawler is a Prussian villain.  Fun descriptions of what Excalibur’s costumes look like.

Proper Marvel Universe.  Kitty wakes up in Braddock Manor.  She wonders who undress her and then redressed her.  Courtney Ross enters the room with some coffee. Kitty is frustrated that her natural state is to be intangible.  Kitty gives a quick recap of how Doctor Doom healed her and soon after, the X-Men presumably died.

Crusader-X Earth.  We see Jean Grey going to the Xavier School, in England.  Mastermind is pulling his old trick on her.  This time, he is making her, the Shadow Queen.

Rachel senses this Jean being in trouble.  Excalibur tries to calm her.

Over at the Hellfire Club of London.  Shadow King just killed Emma Frost.  He is the overall ruler of the club.  He doesn’t waste time with the whole Black and White nonsense.  Tony Stark, in full Iron Man (minus helmet), is trying to make a deal.  Tony wants to break America away from British rule.  He is there knowingly against Captain America’s wishes.

Proper Marvel Universe.  This is the issue with Nigel Frobisher and Vixen.  Nigel was a business man who kept annoyingly hitting on Rachel.  Vixen is the low level head of a gang.  Jimmy, the brother of Brian and Betsy / Captain Britain and Psylocke.  He is walking around in just a tiny pair of white undies.  It is unsettling.  Jimmy kills Vixen’s henchmen and Vixen.  Jimmy makes it possible that Nigel can change into Vixen when needed.  Which is also unsettling.

Crusader-X’s Earth.  Jean gets attacked by Cannonball, he was just trying his skills.  It doesn’t work out for him.  Shadow King makes it so that Jean believes she not only killed Xavier and Moira, but she enjoyed it.

Rachel ditches Kurt to save her not-mother.  Just then, Crusader-X finds Kurt and starts beating him.  He flies off with Kurt.  Meggan and Captain Britain show up and start tracking Kurt.  Meggan can tell that Rachel ditched him.

Issue ends as Rachel gets to Jean, as Jean dies.  Rachel swears vengeance.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1

Writer Chris Claremont

Artist Allen Milgrom

Letterer Tom Orzechowski

Colorist Glynis Wein

Cover Dated November 1984

The Road to Shadowcat begins here!  Also, Ogun’s first appearance!

The polybag I have the comic in, informs me that I bought this comic for four dollars.

This is the direct sequel to the first Wolverine miniseries.  Smith’s Uncanny X-Men 172 & 173 is Kitty’s first time in Japan and deals with the direct aftermath of that miniseries.

Another signal of how this is a direct sequel – and now that I’ve typed this a couple times, I’m not sure if anyone is arguing that it isn’t – is the titles.  Wolverine had solo word titles – I’m Wolverine / Debts & Obligations / Loss / Honor, which I own that issue.  This series has – Lies / Terror / Death / Rebirth / Courage / Honor – of course, I own all six issues of this.  I’m just reviewing the first issue, for now.

This issue takes place after Uncanny X-Men 183 as well as after Secret Wars.  Which is where that stupid Colossus fell in love with Zsaji, she died (spoilers!), he came back to Earth (mistakenly so!) and breaks up with Kitty.  Wolverine has Juggernaut beat the tar out of him, and Kitty goes home to Chicago.

The inside front cover ad is for Mario Bros, now on Atari!

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Kitty 1

Kitty’s narration box implies that her first appearance was years ago, so she’s probably sixteen or seventeen.  Which conflicts with Excalibur wherein she turns 15 (issue 24, in 1990 – six years after this comic and nine years after her first appearance.  That is one long year!  Though she started off as a 13 1/2 year old, but that doesn’t add up.  But that’s the Marvel Sliding Timescale at work.  She should have turned 17 or 18 in that Excalibur issue.

Kitty’s parents are officially divorced.  It seems like her mother moved away and Carmen Pryde got to keep the house.

Uncanny 183 took place a week ago.  She’s been in Chicago for a week.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Kitty 2

Carmen has been working long hours for this past week.  Kitty’s been skating with her new pair of skates that she got for Channukah.  Since she was so close to her father’s bank, he’s a banker apparently, she went by there to visit him.  In front of the bank, Kitty seems a stretch limo.  Her mother and her exchange letters but from Excalibur Annual 2, we know that those letters eventually don’t continue.

Carmen has been working long hours so the two Prydes have not had a chance to really talk.

The bank is closed.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Kitty 3

Kitty phases through the door and surprises the security guard.  I like how she has this pressure to keep her mutation a secret.

Kitty gets to her father’s office door and overhears some voices.  Carmen is the president of the bank.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Ogun 1

Carmen is definitely in trouble with some people.  He then gets slapped (a grown man being slapped, just feels wrong in any decade, what a silly thing to do to anyone!) and Kitty barges into the room.

Before she can get into the room though, a big Japanese dude blocks her path.

I like seeing Carmen’s shame face in that third panel.  He’s probably thinking about how he got to this point.

The man with the cigar in his mouth, that’s Ogun’s first appearance!  I’ve made a point of scanning all of the pages that Ogun is seen and mentioned.  Maybe it is just a very long cigarette.

I really like Carmen trying to protect his daughter, and not wanting to introduce these goons to his daughter.  Would that be an interesting What If? Kitty didn’t go to the bank that evening?  She wouldn’t have known the stakes and would have just missed her father for the weeks he was gone.  Which really means she would have just flown back home and not missed out on any of the stories the X-Men had while she was gone.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Ogun 2

If that big guy was the one who slapped Carmen, then that must have really hurt!

Kitty’s thought bubbles gives us a glimpse of her background that we hadn’t known before.  The Prydes have had a long history in the banking community.  Carmen’s great-grandfather opened this bank and it has been in the family ever since.  Poor Carmen has now sold shares of it to a Japanese tycoon.

Ogun’s “It is a very great pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Pryde” is so creepy, with where this story is going.  Made worst with how Kitty knows Ogun’s eyes ‘linger on her’ and he reminds her of Wolverine.

There is an ad for Dazzler the Movie, Marvel Graphic Novel # 12, which I still really want to know.  The ad states that, whatever happens next will affect every living mutant . . . forever.  Which I’m not sure it even effected mutants at the time.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Ogun 3

Pretty mean spirited how the investors laugh at Kitty.  Carmen tells her that he has to meet the chairman of the board and Kitty expects him home in time for breakfast but Carmen has to go to Japan.  He could be gone for weeks.  Which, I can’t even fathom what that type of meeting could be.  I can see maybe a few days but weeks?  That’s a lot of hours!

Kitty has a gut feeling that her father may not come back alive from the meeting.

Carmen wants to send Kitty back to Xavier’s.  Which is odd, you would think that he would have called Charles and asked for a loan from him, before getting into business with the Yakuza.  After all, Xavier is raising and supporting Kitty, the least he could do is finance Carmen’s bank.

Kitty doesn’t want to involve the X-Men.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Ogun 4

Ogun keeps the creepiness going!  He offers for Kitty to come along with them.  The chairman is quite fond of children (!).

Kitty knows she can handle herself and agrees to those terms but Carmen doesn’t like the idea.  Makes me wonder if he even knows that his daughter is one of the legendary X-Men and that she faces life and death, all of the time.  Heck, this is Post-183, so she has survived the Brood Saga of the 160s!  She’s gone up against Magneto in 150.  Just let her come along, but he might just think the school is a school with adult students.

Carmen rightfully apologizes for snapping at his daughter, he just wants to keep her safe and not get her involved in his nonsense.  He isn’t proud of his actions that led him to this moment and he doesn’t want to tarnish his daughter’s opinion of him.

Though if I were to forbid my wife from doing something, that would guarantee that she will do it – just to show me what was up.  So we can’t be that surprised when Kitty goes to Japan but I’m getting ahead of the story.

He gives her money for the flight home, in cash, which is pretty impressive, also for the taxi ride to the airport.  Which is weird as they are heading to the airport, so they could have driven together but I suppose Kitty would have to home first to gather her things.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Ogun 5

Kitty suspects that her father is in league with the Yakuza.

Kitty’s slight delay is enough to miss out on the private jet her father is on.  She has to sneak onto another plane.  Good thing she is in a popular city, so international flights are not that hard to come by.

We now start multiple sequences wherein we see Kitty using her powers and smarts to figure out what her next steps should be.

Kitty sneaks onto a modular luggage container, with international flights, the crew doesn’t put bags on the plane, they load entire trucks with bags and various other items.  Once the plane is in the air, Kitty carefully phases into one of the seats.

The flight attendant recognizes that Kitty wasn’t always on the plane, as her skating outfit really sticks out.  The pilot has called the authorities and they will sent Kitty back once they are on the ground.  Once they land, Kitty phases back through the plane and is off and running.  She gets through the airport and onto a bus.  Since she knows Japanese, she is able to communicate with people.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 Ogun 6

Now that she is on her feet in Tokyo, I wonder why she doesn’t look up Yukio.  I get why she doesn’t want to ask Lady Mariko, as she would call Logan as soon as she could but Yukio knows how to keep a secret.

Kitty is trying to figure out where her father could be.  She remembers that Ogun did name his employer, Mr. Shigematsu, and locates his office building via information.

Kitty gets to the building and it is a giant skyscraper.  Kitty takes stock in what she has.  A hat, four dollars and some gum, she isn’t very prepared for anything.  Kitty skywalks up several floors and finds a couch to sleep on.  Sometime later, a maid finds Kitty and starts screaming.  One of the guards start shooting, to kill.  Kitty phases out of the window and to the ground.

It is raining now, and Kitty left behind her hat and her favorite skates – that also have her name on it.  It won’t take much to link Kitty Pryde to Carmen Pryde.

Kitty locates a compu-teller, what they called ATMs back in the 80s, and Kitty phases her hand through the lockbox and gets some cash.  She smiles for only a second when police officers start chasing her.  She drops the money, but that doesn’t help matters.

Kitty quickly phases into the ground and lands in the sewer.  The water takes her to Tokyo Bay.

The Bullpen Bulletins has a letter from Jim Shooter.  In Hype Box, Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 / Starriors 1 / Black Panther 1 / Graphic Novel 12, which promotes a Howard the Duck story by creators Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik, instead of the Dazzler story.  There is also an Official Marvel Comics Tryout Book, which i believe is the one that gets Mark Bagley his foot in the door.

The Checklist has Muppets 1, 2 & 3, Secret Wars 7, New Mutants 21, Indiana Jones 23, Power Pack 4, X-Men 187, ROM 60, Alpha Flight 16, Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1 and Doctor Who 2.

Kitty gets to dry land, and cries.  She is a thief like her father.  They both got caught and are now in horrible situations.  Kitty calls the Xavier School, Wolverine answers the phone (so we get to see him in a comic that bears his name in the title) and quickly hangs up the phone.  We’ll have to wait until we review the second issue to figure out how he knows to come to Japan.

Kitty sees her face on several television screens, the police are looking for her due to the robbery attempt.

She gets back to Shigematsu’s office.  She overhears Shigematsu tell Carmen the terms of the agreement.  Carmen is going to launder their money from their illicit operations through the bank.

Excalibur 20

Excalibur 20

Writer Michael Higgins

Penciler Ron Lim

Inker Joe Rubinstein

Colorist Glynis Wein

Letterer Agustin Mas

Cover Dated March 1990

We kick off Lockheed Month!

So Cross Time Caper took so long that they needed breaks from time to time, I imagine to try to break up all of the alternate universe fun.  That storyline just went on forever.  It is a publication practice that modern Marvel wouldn’t have done, to have fill-in stories.  They probably would have made this a one-shot or something or just bit the bullet on the delay.

Issue opens with a married couple in Edinburgh.  They are taking pictures of the scenery, when the mountain they are on starts to rumble.  The mountain is known as, Arthur’s Seat.  An energy force comes over them, they are now inside stone cocoons.  This giant of a blue man, Demon Druid, announces that he is alive again!

Over at the Lighthouse, Meggan is making herself look like a monster as that is how she feels.  Kurt is trying to soothe her but she calls him a monster and flies off.  She feels horrible about calling him that and Kurt hates that Brian is putting her through all of this.  Brian is spending more and more time with Courtney Ross.  Or who he believes is Courtney Ross but really is Sat-yr-9 (her doppelganger).

London.  Brian and Sat-yr-9 are out on the town.  She invites him into her home.  She sees Meggan flying about and tries to distract Brian from looking.  Meggan spots the couple and flies off again.  Brian believes he saw Meggan’s flight signature.  He goes inside, regardless.

Meggan sees the energy signature at Arthur’s Seat and goes to investigate.  The signature is turning into an energy version of Stonehenge.  She shifts into a form of ‘Not Godzilla’ and goes on the attack.  Demon Druid and her start fighting.  He wants to use her for a better power source than the couple.

London.  In a page that seems like Lim wanted to just ensure that he could sell the page later, Sat-yr-9 is in some lingerie.  She’s watching television and sees the big fight.

Edinburgh.  Kitty and Rachel are dressed to go out, in their respected styles.  They were hoping to go to a bar called, Witchery by the Castle.  When they open the door, it looks like a bar that bikers would be scared to go into.  Disappointed, they walk away.  They see the lights and Rachel shifts their clothes into their uniforms.  Kitty isn’t pleased by this.  It does bring up the question, does Rachel reset their clothes once the adventure is over?  Does Kitty have to remind her to do so?  Is that outfit gone completely?  Do they just buy dirty rags and have Rachel turn the material into better outfits?

Demon Druid senses an even more powerful force and gets distracted from Meggan.  Poor Meggan, she is always being replaced.  The force he senses is Rachel and her Phoenix powers.  Meggan is placed into one of those stone cocoons.

Kitty attacks first, and tries phasing into him – which hurts both of them.  Demon Druid and the electric Stonehenge disappear as does the stone cocoons.

Excalibur 20 Lockheed 1

Sometime later.  Poor Meggan is going through a lot this issue.

Kitty is tinkering away on a device that should solve the problem.  Look at sweet Lockheed just watching on.  As a fan of the dragon, that’s all I’m asking for in today’s artist. Just have him be near by.

This is during the awkward phase where Kurt is having feelings for Meggan.

I like Kitty being the gadget person of the team.  It is a good role for her and she rarely gets to do it outside of Excalibur.  It helps that Captain Britain is also a scientist, so they balance each other other.  Kitty is the tech and Brian is the higher science guy.

Speaking of whom, Brian comes in.  Meggan is excited to see him and update him on what has been happening and he just straight up yells at everyone to leave him alone.  Rude!

Excalibur 20 Lockheed 2

Look how supportive Lockheed is in that first panel!  Poor little guy fell asleep!

Kitty has also fallen asleep working on that device.  Captain Britain wakes her up, he has concluded perfecting the device.

Kitty is talking and Meggan has the nerve to ask her to quiet down, Meggan is trying to watch television.  Kitty is about to make a comment about how Meggan can watch cartoons later but she notices Meggan is watching the news, and stops.

Demon Druid is back!  He’s at the Darkmoor Research Facility.  Demon Druid is back up to making his light show version of Stonehenge.  Kitty says that they are not ready.  Captain Britain wants her to get ready and flies off like a jerk and the hot head that he is.

Kitty is ready, Kurt teleports the rest of the team to Darkmoor, which exhausts him.  Him teleporting so many and so far, reminds me of What If V2 33, so I was a little worried.  Even though I know that Kurt doesn’t die until Second Coming but still, I don’t want that guy being hurt.

Kitty explains to Widget how important he is to the plan.  Odd that they teleported with Widget and Phoenix as that’s what’s causing them to teleport to all of the alternate Earths during Cross Time.

The team wants Captain Britain to stop fighting Demon Druid but the hot head isn’t listening.  We get the cover image, as Rachel has to stop his attacks.

Kitty is ready.  Rachel links Kitty’s mind with Demon Druid.  Kitty’s device opens a portal to where he wanted to go and he goes peacefully.

Captain Britain wakes up and everyone chastises him, as they should.

Not a bad done in one.

What If Volume Two Issue 33

What If V2 33

Writer George Caragonne

Penciler Rod Ramos

Inker Jimmy Palmiotti

Letterer Janice Chiang

Colorist Renee Witterstaetter

Cover Dated January 1992

Split from The Dark Phoenix Saga, Uncanny X-Men 137 and continued from last issue.

Issue opens with a recap of what happened last issue.  Phoenix notices Jean is alive in the cocoon.  She has a stray thought of wishing Jean wasn’t alive.  Jean vanishes from this life.

Phoenix has to find Shadow King as he had Mastermind steal baby Rachel so that Shadow King could have a proper host body.  As we all know, Shadow King doesn’t mind taking over a lady’s body.

The Phoenix knows that she isn’t Jean because Mastermind shot her and she died, yet she came back.

It only takes three pages to do the full recap, which is pretty decent in terms of What If.

Phoenix locates Shadow King, he is somewhere on Muir Island.  Phoenix confirms he isn’t inside either Moira MacTaggert or Banshee.  She gets attacked by a like force, she turns around to see her grown daughter, Rachel, attacking her.  Not only did Shadow King take her body but aged her as well.  He was able to age her via the same machine that Erik the Red used to age Magneto from a baby to an adult.  A story point that I have to try to forget again.  Oh the ways Marvel has to try to keep Magneto young but also a WWII survivor.

Shadow King taunts Phoenix, as it tries to reason with Rachel to fight off the effects.  Only Rachel’s body was aged, her brain is still that of an infant.

Once on the astral plane, Phoenix makes short work of the Shadow King.  Phoenix is left with an adult Rachel with a baby brain.  Luckily, she can revert Rachel’s body back to being a baby body so now she matches.  What a relief!  This happens on a page turn and I have to admit, I was a little worried with what one does with a grown woman’s body but with a mind of an infant.  Does an infant even have the ability to move those heavy arms?  I imagine so.  But by the time she was 30, she would look like she was in her 50s.

What If V1 33 Kitty 1

After rescuing Rachel, Phoenix returns to the Mansion.  She changes clothes and we get to see who the X-Men and others are at this point.

Storm, Rogue, Shadowcat, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Professor X, Cannonball, Magma, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Mirage, and Cyclops – are present.

Phoenix lies about where she was.  Scott is so happy to be reunited with his daughter.  That’s pretty much how I feel everytime I come home for lunch or from work when I see Walker Dennis.  Just all smiles.

What If V1 33 Kitty 2 Lockheed

Eight years pass. Phoenix never uses her powers during that time.  From the captions, I take it the top row is the villains and the center team is the X-Men but I couldn’t figure out f that was Colossus starting off the villains but then I figured out that it was Mister Sinister.

Villains – Mister Sinister, Emma Frost, Arcade?, Omega Red, Magneto, Fenris Twins?, Apocalypse and Sabretooth

X-Men – Rogue, Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Wolverine and Kitty – pretty much the only team you need.

The anit-mutant prejudice are raising to hazardous levels.  In 1988, David Russell defeats Ronald Regan to become President of the United States.  In 1990, Mutant Registration Act passes. Of course, the rat finks, the Avengers and Fantastic Four fall in line.  Which is horrible as the Avengers have had mutants as members and flipping Franklin Richards is Reed and Sue’s son!

You see cute little Lockheed above Kitty, in a new costume!, the little guy put on a little weight.  Cute little thing!

The mutants are gathered, wondering what they should do next.

Havok, Angel and Beast seem to have come back to the fold.

Wolverine checks in with a crying Rachel.  She keeps having a recurring nightmare of a fire bird killing her mother.  She has him swear that he won’t do anything about her dream, and he does.

Phoenix, after eight years of not doing anything, has an itch that it needs to scratch.  Phoenix flies to the White House and telepathically changes the president’s mind.  The very next day, he announces that being a bigot isn’t the way to be and is assassinated right there.  Almost as if someone expected this day to happened.

Whoever the Vice President is, gives Henry Gyrich permission to start the Wideawake Procedure – which is the Sentinel program.  We start getting shades of Days of Future Past here but it is clearly not Rachel’s timeline as there are already key differences.  The Sentinels start attacking all super powered people, which makes total sense as what is the difference between inherited powers and accidental powers – powers are the threat.

Destiny tells Xavier that everyone has to leave the mansion.  Wolverine decides now is as good as any to confront Phoenix.  She just straight kills him.  She leaves the room and sees that Cyclops and Xavier were outside the door the entire time.  Phoenix leaves the mansion as the Sentinels arrive.  She heads off to New Mexico and goes to where her and Scott made Rachel, right before heading to the moon in Dark Phoenix Saga.

The Sentinels attack the mansion.  The surviving X-Men head to a new base.  There they regroup, they will attack the Baxter Building, the Sentinels’ new base.  Magneto joins them out of respect for his dead friend, Xavier.  The Sentinels track Magneto and the X-Men at this base.  Magneto tries to hold them off but his crippled in the process.

Phoenix shows up to wipe out these attacking Sentinels.  She heads off to the Baxter Building and starts attacking.

What If V1 33 Kitty 3

Thanks to the Phoenix, the X-Men were able to get through the Sentinels’ defenses.  Kurt collapses.  Kitty runs over to her dear friend and holds him as he dies.  The war the dirty flat scans have started as now officially gone too far!

Kitty grabs Colossus and she is going to end this nonsense.

What If V1 33 Kitty 4

Kitty phases until they find Master Mold.  For some reason, she kisses Colossus goodbye.  Maybe to get a bad taste in her mouth so that she can focus on her next big play.

One Fastball Special later, Kitty solidifies inside Master Mold’s head and destroys the entire system.

Okay, now the anti-mutant side has gone too far!  With Kitty’s heroic death, the Sentinels are now left without a leader and are easy pickings.

With Kitty’s death, Phoenix can’t take it anymore and just burns out all of the Sentinels.

Scott calls her Jean but she was never Jean.  He married her so he loves her.  I mean, really, eight years later, of course he is going to stay with her.  Plus, he has a child with her!  Also, she’s a cosmic fire bird – one does not say no to a deity.

Lousy Destiny walks over to them, Phoenix asks what her future is like.  Destiny tells her that all futures lead to death.  I bet, if she looked a little beyond that, there is rebirth on the horizon.  It may not be tomorrow or even a few years from now, it could take a hundred years, but Phoenix will burn everything.

Issue ends with Phoenix deciding, instead of having a few good years, to just leave Earth – leaving her husband and child behind.

 . . .

With this post, I am now 33 today!  I am now entering my Jesus year.  If you hear of any Romans coming to Montana, please let me know in a hurry!

Come back tomorrow for . . . Our Second Annual Lockheed Month!

Lay’s Flavor – Shadow and Flame

I couldn’t think of anything that would work as “Magik” and I really couldn’t make what I wanted to do with Shadow and Flame happened.  For Shadow, I wanted blue chips and for the Flame, I wanted a nice kick.  So instead, we are going with – Cracked Pepper and Cayenne – which could be good, right?

If you wouldn’t mind voting, that would be pretty nice!

Thanks!

Death of Wolverine : Weapon X Program 2

Death of Wolverine Weapon X Program 2

Writer Charles Soule

Artist & Cover Salvador Larroca

Colorist Frank D’Armata

Letterers VC’s Cory Petit & Joe Sabino

This series follows the (mis)adventures of those fools that Wolverine saved and died saving, foolishly.  Not that the act was foolish but the way he did it.  So they wouldn’t get adamantium, he cut the vat that was about to pour it into them, doing so, it poured all over him.

Proving all it takes for me to buy a comic is to show Kitty, at all.

Death of Wolverine Weapon X Program 2 Kitty

Sharp, who not only is borrowing Star Lord’s mask, has a bonus voice in his head that speaks in red text on black caption boxes.  He may have Wolverine as his bonus voice, but I suspect that it is Ogun and the Logan Legacy takes place after this miniseries, even though it came out second.  That would explain why he sees Kitty there in the top panel.

If Ogun is in Sharp, I will have to seek out the first issue of this miniseries and probably the other issues as well.

Another reason why it is most likely Ogun, is that is the outfit Kitty wore during Kitty Pryde and Wolveirne.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine 1

So the six escapees are in a helicopter while another Weapon X helicopter is attacking them.

Sharp asks the brunette lady, Meifeng, to help out.  There is a blonde lady but she is sleeping.  Meifeng grabs a fire extinguisher and throws it at the attacking helicopter and both explode.

Sharp lands the helicopter on a train, so that if there is a tracking device on the helicopter, Weapon X will follow the train instead.  The six of them jump off the train and into the river.  Except one of them, lands into the sand next to it.  The others suspect he is dead but he gets right back up.  Each of them has a special power.

Neuro decides to explain what he suspects is their powers and provides them all with a codename.  Junk, has ram horns.  Meifeng gets the codename, Endo.  Skel is the dude who survived the crash.

Later.  Endo is using the river to see her reflection.  Junk walks up to her, she accuses him of being a creeper.  They all get attacked by some Weapon X soldiers.  Sharp kills them all, his bonus voice in his head wants him to ditch the others and go on his own.

DCBS took out an ad congratulating Marvel on 75 years.

Once the threat is gone, Neuro wraps the truck the Weapon X guys showed up in, in some chicken wire as he knows that they have trackers inside of them.  He finds some scanners and locates all of the trackers and takes them out.  Endo is worried about getting more scars, which must be under her shirt.

Neuro goes over to the sleeping blonde.  She wakes up, reads his mind, reveals that he has killed so many women.  He kills her, the others show up, he explains (quickly) that her tracker was next to her throat and he missed and killed her.  They buy it as she wasn’t a real person to them, she will probably go nameless.

The gang buries the blonde.  Neuro takes this chance to talk to Sharp.  Sharp’s voice tells him to not trust Neuro, as he is lying.  Sharp is able to mentally talk to the voice so that’s interesting.

There is a seventh tracker, Neuro says that it is for a Victor Creed and they hope that he will be able to help them.  To an early death, most likely.

I’m not sure if I’m getting any issue before issue 5 but if I do, we will review it here.
