Matt Ryan did a stellar job with the cover! It is pretty close to what the original cover had but with modern coloring, it really pops.
Another Bonus Lockheed Month Post!
Issue opens with Colossus lifting a chunk of ground, looking for Kurt underneath it. I really like how the title of the issue is on the chunk, not sure if that is art team or is that Orzechowski’s decision but I do enjoy it.
Colossus is wearing a one piece red bathing suit as a costume for the issue, the cover sort of shows it. Rogue is in a green jumpsuit that I sort of like how it could be an ordinary outfit, if it wasn’t for how green it is. This issue sort of has several new stylings.
Colossus, Kurt and Rogue are doing some practical Danger Room sessions, outside in the woods of the Xavier Estate. They are playing a game of Hide and Seek, and Kurt is staying ahead of the two seekers. Colossus is on a cliff, Kurt shouts at him, and as soon as Colossus turns, Kurt drop kicks him off the cliff.
Kurt shouts that if Xavier could see them now, he would kick them off the X-Men and replace them with the New Mutants. Rogue attacks him by flying and grabbing him, she thinks he should speak for himself as she is winning this round. Kurt teleports onto her back and covers up her eyes. She starts zig zaging and he guides her so that she falls into the water, right next to Colossus.
Rogue tells Colossus that they will bounce back for the second round, but he isn’t listening. He is thinking about Kitty who is coming back from Japan with Wolverine tonight. They have been living through the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine miniseries. They left in Uncanny X-Men 183 and are now coming back for issue 192, they were gone for nearly a full year’s worth of issues, publishing wise. The team has changed as much as Kitty has since the two have been separated.
Kurt teleports down to Colossus and Rogue. Colossus is sad as he didn’t want to fall in love with Zsaji, during Secret Wars – which now that I think about it, should be or has already finally stopped being printed at this point, which is smart in terms of marketing. Issue 12 comes out and fans may be tempted to pick up the titles to see if there is still any ramifications of the series. Rogue tells him that this type of emotion is out of her league, then sadly makes a comment about how the Carol Danvers part of her mind may have been helpful as she had relationships.
Kurt, now that he is thinking of Carol, asks Rogue why she doesn’t use Carol’s seventh sense, sort of like her Danger Sense, power. Rogue doesn’t know if she got that power, but it makes sense if she gain her main powers that she would have gotten the minor ones too. It is a muscle so she hasn’t had to use it and will have to train to incorporate it. Rogue, naturally, doesn’t want to keep talking about Carol or her powers as it is a bitter reminder of her stealing Carol’s powers and life as well as Rogue’s former life.
Kurt sees that it is a sort subject, and in a nice bonding attempt, starts trying to tickle Rogue. She calls him “Nighty” from time to time, which makes sense as a cute name but I couldn’t read it without adding Night to make Nighty Night. Kurt is tickling and teleporting and overwhelming her with the sensations. She wants him to stop, which I completely understand as I don’t like being tickled, much less, for an extended amount of time. This seventh sense kicks in and she is able to backhand him right when he is teleporting. This sends him backwards and she catches him. He makes a comment about how a safe like that deserves a kiss. This highly upsets her and she flies away.
It takes Kurt a little too long to realize why this was insensitive of him. I mean, it would be on the top of my mind all the time if I was talking to Rogue, to try to not mention anything about touching or loving. Even bad news still sheds a light on how Rogue isn’t allowed to have bad relationships.
Apparently Rogue had told Storm about Rogue’s power manifesting when she kissed Cody. Then at some point, Storm told Kurt. I wonder if those two are always gossiping about their teammates? That could be fun, as we never get two characters talking about a third character.
Colossus points to an abandon mansion that Rogue headed towards. Which begs the question, does Xavier have neighbors? I guess, if I had to think about, that I imagined the mansion is in the middle of thousands of acres, so no one ever comes near his home unless that is their intention.
Before they can make their way over there, a giant flash of light falls to the ground.
We leave that cliffhanger to cut over to the Kennedy International Airport. Xavier and Storm are waiting for Kitty. Xavier is letting Storm eavesdrop on various people’s thoughts – which is mess up that he is doing it himself but to let a second person do it too? Super invading of privacy! Storm is surprised with how many people are thinking about mutants, and how nasty those thoughts are. Xavier is apparently teaching a course at Colombia University, which has to be a fancy school as that’s where Daredevil got his law degree.
Apparently the Dazzler the Movie came out where Dazzler’s status of being a mutant is exposed against her will. So people are mad about that. That story has been on my wishlist for ever now. One of these days.
Xavier notices that it is taking a while for Kitty and Logan’s flight to come in. Storm announces that the flight is delayed to bad weather, she would have helped if she could. This makes her sad and Xavier thinks about how conflicted Storm is. She is sad that her powers are gone, but she also loves the man who took her powers away. Which must be love, as rationally, I would only want to murder the guy.
Xavier then notices Illyana muttering. In a very cute page, Illyana is by a window and is upset at her bag. Turns out, she snuck Lockheed with her to the airport! He is getting bored and is also cramped in the bag. Pretty smart of Claremont to realize that he could get away with this stunt as both Illyana and Lockheed’s minds are blocked from Xavier’s probing. Except, now Lockheed is puffing smoke and she tells him to stop that as she can’t hide the smoke. While being slightly annoyed with the dragon, she gets actually angry at her stupid brother as it is due to him that some of Kitty’s homecoming is going to be awkward.
We then see that Rachel is there, also mentally eavesdropping on people’s thoughts. Really goes to show that you don’t need two telepaths on the same team, as it doesn’t really change what stories you can tell. Rachel thinks about how eavesdropping was the only way to survive in the future. Which is what gives Rachel, creatively, a purpose on this team, she can reference the Days of Future Past timeline and give Claremont chances to flesh it and her out.
Rachel remembers her personal past and we are treated to the final moments of Rachel’s time in her future. This gets referenced in a later issue of Excalibur and it is nice to see the building blocks that Alan Davis will pick up later. From my memory, I believe it does sync up rather well.
Rachel and Kate Pryde have broken into Project Nimrod – the Excalibur story, I believe just refers to it as a Sentinel factory. Kate is trying to relax Rachel, and comfort her. It isn’t Rachel’s fault that she was turned into a Hound and had to lead her fellow mutants to their deaths, she was made into a weapon.
Rachel comments that this mission they are on, there is no way to get out of there alive. Kate states that she knows that, and she always did. She does know that Rachel can escape and gives the code word, Dark Phoenix – which is what triggered my memory as that is straight out of the Davis’ story. Once she says it, Rachel’s power manifested and like how she did with Kate’s consciousness, sending it back to a young Kitty Pryde, this time, she teleports herself to our present, and that’s the last time Rachel sees Kate. Predictably, the next scene would have had Kate Pryde, get further into the station, destroy it, try to teleport herself out and unfortunately, get merged with a machine and become Widget. But we are still 213 – 192 = 21 issues away from the end of Mutant Massacre, so two years away Excalibur forming. Then who knows if that was even Claremont’s idea for Widget’s origins as it is never hinted at until Davis fully explains it.
We get an awesome panel transition, from Rachel seeing Kate Pryde to it becoming Kitty Pryde’s face. Kitty has a new hairstyle, fashion sense and if they actually said it, a new code name, Shadowcat.
Kitty goes to greet her friends who are waiting for her. She then notices Rachel and recognizes her from her fragmented memories of her time during Days of Future Past. Which we don’t really get that story ever, there isn’t much there as she was sleeping during most of it but one would imagine it wasn’t a deep sleep and probably she overheard some things.
We cut back to the woods. Kurt and Colossus get to the crater, and they realize that it should be much larger than it is. While investigating the surrounding areas, they see that a tree and a deer have been crystallized. It is Colossus who notices the similarities to how Warlock feeds.
In the ruined mansion, Rogue has been knocked through a loop. She knows that Colossus probably could handle that force but Kurt might be hurt and plans to look for her two teammates. Before she can head out, we see that Magus, Warlock’s father, is back on Earth. Which as a kid and being part of the online community, I remember there have been times when someone would make a reference to Jim Starlin’s Warlock series and Magus is a character of that series so the two are connected there as well. Who knows why Marvel allowed two creative teams to both names of Warlock and Magus for two different pairs of characters but it can be confusing from time to time.
Very interesting having these two characters fight, as they do the same thing, essentially. Rogue and Magus absorb life forces, he does it to feed and she does it to obtain different power sets and knowledge. Also, he enjoys it while she is conflicted about it.
She knows to not let him touch her bare flesh. She grabs a part of his arm and tears it apart, causing him such pain. Colossus takes advantage of that and the surprised attack and throws bricks at Magus. Colossus gets close enough to unleash a battery of punches. He stops once Magus doesn’t move. Of course, as soon as he stops, Magus flees to the outdoors.
Kurt tries to help in the battle. He has never tried such a thing before, but he wants to see if he can teleport a partial item from a larger item. One would think this would have been done in a Danger Room sequence by now but he’s still learning. We know later, that Age of Apocalypse Nightcrawler did this quite a bit to huge success. This is our Kurt’s first time so he successfully does it, but it tires him extremely. Also extremely? Magus’ pain, if he thought having a limb torn off, having one magically teleported away hurts like a billion times more.
Rogue uses her new found seventh sense and avoids most of Magus’ attacks. She gets in close enough to kiss him and absorbs some of his powers. This weakens him even more but it gives Rogue an appearance of the Technarcy. But not the Phalanx as that really means humans who are affected with her transmode virus. Get to that later.
I do feel bad that whenever Rogue has to absorb someone’s memories or powers, she opts to do it via a kiss, so she is usually kissing foes and such. When she does it with an ally, it usually is a simple touch of their fingers. That has to haunt her once she thinks back on the battle.
Kurt and Colossus catch up to her and she is speaking like Warlock, with a bunch of “self hurts” and “self thinks.”
We also find out that with Storm powerless and Wolverine gone, that Kurt is the new leader of the X-Men. This is where he gets his experience that will be forged in fire with Excalibur once Captain Britain leaves.
Magus shows up, as a giant, and tells them that they fought heroically. He will let them live, as he could easily tear the entire planet into pieces but if they bring him his son, Warlock, they can all live. Before they can give him a witty response, he is gone.
There is a time cut and we see the entire team is reunited. Kurt regrets that he couldn’t leave someone behind and then come back with the rest of the team. Wolverine states that no one would have been safe by themselves and it was a good call. Kurt offers Wolverine the leadership role and he doesn’t want it at all.
Xavier tells everyone to be silent as a police officer shows up to the ruins. Xavier uses his powers to make it appear that they are only a group of people in casual clothes, meaning no harm. Also, it is implied that he made the officer’s mind believe there was no danger as why would ten individuals be in a ruin mansion?
The officer gets back to his car, he notices that the car has moved closer to the mansion. With that, the car absorbs him and we see that Magus has taken the officer’s appearance, just like how his son can do. This is the first merged Technarchy and human being, thus Phalanx has created. Which will become a genuine threat during the Phalanx Covenant at around the time this reprint was published but Uncanny 316 – 192 but is still ten years from when this story was originally published. That is one slow burn! Also, is the story that lead up to us getting Generation X! It is all connected.
We get a giant time cut of months as Xavier is leaving one of his classes at Columbia. It is right before Christmas as snow is falling. He happens upon some of his students. There is no many of them and they all have anti-mutant thoughts which throws him off. What also throws him off? A brick to his head! From there, he gets a beating and they leave him for dead.
Someone shows up and drags Xavier into an alley. Now that’s a cliffhanger!
This was the last of my X-Men Classic that I was able to buy from a pawn shop so we will pick this story up with either other issues of X-Men Classic or once we get around to these through Uncanny X-Men proper.
There is a Marvel Bullpen Bulletin that remembers Jack Kirby who passed away recently for them, February 6, 1994. Hard to believe 20 years has passed since that day. Jack “The King” Kirby, without him, we wouldn’t even have the Marvel Universe we know and love, and for this site’s concern, we wouldn’t have the first 11 issues of Uncanny X-Men.
I’m sure when I moved out of my parents house and into our first place with my wife, that I kept the Wolverine action figure with this but the last I saw, I only really kept the Kate Pryde figure.
I’m not that familiar with Marvel Select, does it predate the Marvel Legends toys?
There is an Original Trek meets Original X-Men (plus Bishop, Storm and Wolverine – of course) but that one doesn’t involve Kitty so it lacks being in my collection. This one, involves the best series of the Star Trek franchise – The Next Generation. Largely due to them having the best captain, Jean-Luc Picard. Though those first two seasons are hard to watch, largely due to the heavy focus on Wesley Crusher and Data. So the next generation of the Enterprise meets the next generation of the X-Men.
This story takes place a minute after Star Trek : First Contact –
Thanks to YouTuber Nathan Travis for hosting the trailer!
In that film, old nemesis (and possibly the most dangerous) The Borg go back in time to stop humans “first contact” with an alien race. Hence why this is titled, Second Contact. The Enterprise is in back in time, already but not only go further in time but they also go into an alternate universe where the X-Men are.
In fact, this comic starts one minute after the end credits of that film. Which I really need to see if I can find a copy of the film to watch.
The cast of the two teams are –
Star Trek : Next Generation : Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T. Rider, Commander Data, Commander Deanna Troi, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge, Lt. Commoner Worf and the Borg. X-Men : Wolverine, Storm, Angel, Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Banshee, Kang, Sentinels and the Thunderbolts.
Captain’s Log. April 5, 2063 – or so. The Enterprise is trying to wade through time to get back to their present. Once out of warp, they notice they are not near their Earth.
Editor “Continuity Chief” Timothy Tuohy lets us know that this issue takes place before X-Men Zero Tolerance, Heroes Return and Thunderbolts 10 – so we know exactly where we are.
Their attempt to go forward in time has caused them to go backwards in time. Geordi informs them that they need to replace their processing core. Crusher tries to explain that this primitive Earth shouldn’t have that type of continuity. Riker corrects her, there is Shi’ar tech that has been located and will work. Little do they know how much alien life has come into contact with this Earth. Picard is going to send two away teams – to the two locations in North America that has the technology they need.
The first team – Worf, Riker and Crusher, come across the Thunderbolts. In the late 90s, in Star Trek time, New York City should be in the Eugenics War. The three have come to the Baxter Building, which is currently the homebase of the Thunderbolts. Their twelfth issue is so great.
Since the first team came across costume folk, they abandon that goal and try a nice country home in Westchester.
Banshee likes that the X-Men have come together, not during a time of crisis, but to just hang out. This really is a decent group of seven X-Men. Angel serves as the Original Five placeholder; Kitty, Kurt and even Colossus represent Excalibur as well as the inclusion of Storm and Wolverine adds to the 35th Anniversary era. Banshee is the lone holdout, except he adds another face from the Second Class of X-Men.
Kitty likes it when they gather too.
The second away team is – Geordi, Data and Troi. Geordi locates the Shi’ar tech behind a panel. Before he can make much progress, Wolverine pops his two outer claws around Geordi’s throat. Data grabs Wolverine by the shoulder and merely flings him across the room. We get a fun match up between Data and Colossus. Colossus throws a punch, Data tries to catch it but ends up on the other side of the room, as well.
Troi gets between the boyz and quickly explains that they are from the Enterprise. Wolverine recognizes the name of the starship from the previous teamup.
Later, Picard can’t believe that he is following in the footsteps of his most illustrious predecessor.
Such a great double splash page of two groups together. The X-Men took the time to get dressed, as did Geordi, Data and Troi.
We get a very quick recap of the previous crossover. Picard also recaps his film, so now everyone knows what happened before they each woke up this morning.
Kitty, as the smartest person in the room, announces that the Enterprise being here is causing a major upset in the timestream.
I love how much Wolf and Wolverine (who are great together) are so over timelines and alternate Earths. A stable of both franchises.
Troi states that an evil presence is is about to arrive.
That force is . . . Kang! An Avengers villain but the X-Men don’t really have a time traveling foe so the villain borrowing makes sense. Always better to use an established character instead of creating a new one.
Is only Banshee facing Kang? That’s not good staging on Kang’s behalf.
Kang doesn’t waste too much time explaining the stakes. There is a grave disruption in the time space continuities, so the two franchises’ histories are about to mix. As fun as it is to read, it isn’t great for the characters. There are two huge anomalies that need intimidate attention.
I do like Picard and Storm having asides with each other.
Riker’s providing a log. Kang gave them eight chronal compass watches, so there will be two groups of four characters. Team One is – Colossus, Picard, Troi and Kurt. Team Two is – Wolverine, Data, Storm and Worf. A bit of an odd grouping for both sets. At least Wolverine and Worf makes sense. Surprised the writers didn’t try to put Colossus and Data on the same teams, or some other fun combo like Picard and Storm on the same team.
That leaves poor Kitty, Angel and Banshee just standing around on the Enterprise-E.
Team One goes to the Days of Future Past timeline – the most famous of the X-Men’s alternate histories. Makes sense that Colossus is on this team as his future self is in the storyline. Storm was too so she really should have been on this team. I guess Wolverine and Kitty could have been there too.
Kurt talks about this as if it makes perfect sense, I guess Rachel probably painted a very visual telling of this future. 2013 is still the far future, in the late 90s. Filthy flatscans begin to throw rocks at the mutants and Starfleet officers. Sentinels arrive on scene and everyone scatters.
Team Two. Data recognizes that they are in the middle of The Battle of Wolf 359 –
This happens during Star Trek Next Generation’s Best of Both Worlds Part II and Deep Space Nine’s pilot, Emissary, during Captain Sisko’s flashback. Picard was assimilated into the Borg fold at this point. The Borg use his knowledge of Starfleet to make short work of the opposition.
The battle from Emissary –

The aftermath (and the lead up) from Best of Both Worlds, Part II –

So for those folks who are not familiar with Star Trek / Borg canon, that’s the best I can do. I hope it helps.
Worf and Wolverine start tearing into the Borg. Storm whips up a tornado, which may not be the smartest move on a spaceship. With a lightning strike, the Borg are taken out.
Days of Future Past. Picard takes down a Sentinel. As do Colossus and Kurt. Troi feels like something is missing. Kang, talking aloud, to himself. He reveals, to himself, his own plans, that the anomalies are keeping history together, so once the heroes fix those two pieces – history should be for Kang’s taking.
On the bridge of the Enterprise. Two officers are getting restless, as Kitty has to watch on. Just then, Wesley Crusher and the Traveler arrive.
Traveler explains how Kang is tricking them into doing his bidding. The anomalies need to stay in place, as time fixes itself.
I do like the idea of Wesley and Kitty being a pair. Traveler is going to guide the Enterprise to where Kang is. Mr. Crusher and Ms. Pryde are going to warn the teams.
As the two youngsters leave, Banshee and Angel reflect on how Kitty has grown up.
Battle of Wolf 359. Sisko is giving orders to Thunderbird, so we know he is the anomaly. Now we just need Sunfire and all of the Second Class folks would be present. Well, and Cyclops too, I suppose.
Wolverine is about to kill Thunderbird (as he’s better than Count Nefaria, I guess). Luckily, Kitty arrives and hugs Wolverine. Wesley is forced to yell at Data to not do anything that Kang told them to do. Storm wants an explanation, I would have just taken Kitty at her word. I’m good like that.
Just then, Sisko is about to be killed when Proudstar takes the hit – like a champ.
Data suspects that Kang wanted Sisko to die so that he never becomes the Emissary of the Prophets. Wesley tells them to use their watches to go back to the Enterprise. Kitty and him need to catch up to the other team. Worf respects how brave Kitty is.
Kang breaks a monitor, as the Enterprise attacks. Kang isn’t gong to go down quietly.
Days of Future Past. We get to see Tasha Yar filling in for Rachel Grey, as Kate Pryde sleeps. Well, as she’s back in the 80s and it is really Kitty’s mind that is taking the nap.
Kurt is able to work in the phase “Days of Future Past” which can’t be easy to do.
Troi confirms this isn’t their Tasha Yar.
Picard can’t bring himself to kill Yar. Wesley and Kitty arrive to stop what Picard has already decided to not do.
Borg inspired Sentinels break through the walls.
I don’t quite get how Tasha Yar was able to send Kate’s mind back to the past, that isn’t part of her skill set. She was a kick arse Security Chief.
Troi volunteers to replace Yar and get the two Prydes minds back to their rightful bodies.
Colossus and Kitty are taking out SentiBorgs.
Wait, did Colossus fastball special Kitty? He’s been doing that since before Whedon did it, that’s pretty awesome.
Kitty destroys a head of a SentiBorg and lands. She sees Troi syncing Yar and Kate’s minds.
Kitty, for the first time, witnesses the event that has been a pretty pivotal moment in her history. One of the first real defining stories of hers.
Wait, am I reading Troi’s dialogue correctly? Kate’s mind is going back to Tasha Yar’s younger mind? Shouldn’t this have been Rachel doing this to a sleeping Yar? That would have make more sense.
Riker, Banshee and the Traveler are on Kang’s ship. As soon as Traveler is finished tampering with Kang’s ship, the come back to the bridge. Picard and the gang are waiting for him.
The two ships begin a fire fight. The Enterprise ends the duel with a win.
Captain’s Log, Kang’s ship imploded onto itself. Kitty kisses Wesley on the cheek! If only we could get a tad more of that relationship. The two teams say their good byes.
The X-Men return to Earth and one second later, are beginning the adventure of Planet X, which we’ll be reviewing in a few days.
This is the Batman side of my tie-in with Batman vs Superman.
I’m a huge sucker for Access, the new character find of the Marvel vs DC crossover. From that crossover, he was in the Doctor Strangefate comic, the Amalgam title. DC did All Access, and now Marvel gets their turn. This is also the last time we’ve seen Access. He who walks through the two universes.
Something else I love from the late 90s of Marvel, is the gatefold unfold cover. On the inside is the premise of the title and the cast list. I’ve kept this issue for the sweet opening scene with the X-Men of Days of Future Past and the Legion of Super-Heroes. When I was reading this, this time, I honestly thought it opened with the Daredevil * Batman, so I was a bit concerned that I didn’t own the issue with the two characters.
I meant to make the Batman reveal be a surprised but I already typed all of that, shoot!
Previously. Axel Asher (Access) is dating his girlfriend from the Marvel Universe – Ming Kuo-Fan. Don’t worry, he doesn’t have a DC girlfriend. Spider-Man wasn’t doing so well against Juggernaut and DC’s Mantis, of the New Gods. Jack Kirby’s New Gods. To help Spider-Man out, Access got Wonder Woman – which was pretty cool. Seriously, I”m a total nut for late 90s Marvel era of titles. Quicksilver, Heroes for Hire, Thunderbolts and the entire Heroes Return era.
There was a moment, and this says a lot about me – I had a sweet First Choice (word processing program on my old old computer) that I was keeping track of all of the Character Lists. It was a horrible program, super simple it was a blue screen with yellow text.
Once he was in the DC Universe, Access realized he can time travel, as well as merely jump between the two universes. At one point,he went into the past and had Hal Jordan as Green Lantern, fight the Hulk. Since he went back in time, naturally, that issue ended with him being in the Days of Future Past. Who else would be there, but the Legion of Superheroes.
At one point, when I was thinking of becoming a big fan of a DC character – I was going to go with the Legion’s Shadowlass. DC’s version of Shadowcat – in regards to their powers. We’ll get to that whenever I reveiw Superboy Team-Up (one day). Instead, I went with Chase Cameron, as she is pure awesome.
The only story I’ve read of the Legion was the pure awesome, Great Darkness Saga. Thanks to Wizard’s Top 100 Trades.
Shadowlass is now going by, Apparition.
Another reason I didn’t go with Shadowlass was due to how complicated the Legion’s continuity is.
This issue opens with the Legion fighting Sentinels.
For some reason, I thought Ultra Boy’s tattoo looked like Gen13’s Grudge’s tattoo. Or to respect time, that Grudge’s tattoo looks like Ultra Boy’s insignia.
But it doesn’t look similar at all.
I do enjoy how all the characters name check themselves. Triad has the ability to split into three persons and this confuses the Sentinel.
Wolverine arrives on the scene, he wants the Legion to run away. I do enjoy how Saturn Girl and Braniac 5 get name checked. I like how Kesel kept the year at 2012, which is fourteen years ago from the printing of this comic. Four years ago from writing of this post. Saturn Girl has read his mind, and has the decency to read his thoughts – aloud- while he is only a few feet away.
Access vouches for Wolverine, he knows that Wolverine is the best there is at what he does.
Seeing what is left of the X-Men – Rachel Summers, Colossus, Franklin Richards, Kate Pryde, Storm and Magneto. Since Magneto is standing and walking about, we know this takes place prior to the Days of Future Past storyline. Which I really enjoy the decision to make this take place prior to the story. It gives this issue a moment that it can run with. We’ll get to that in a few pages.
Saturn Girl gives Storm a quick recap of what the Legion has been going through. They were in the 30th Century and now they have been stuck in the 90s. Storm’s “My condolences” rings so true to me. Though, for Storm, the 90s were not that bad for her.
Magneto recalls the 90s and being the legend that he is, he would have recalled The Legion.
Access tries to explain, something he is going to get loads of experience with explaining. If he was more rested, he would have fixed this by now.
Rachel hears the story, and in her desperation, wonders if they can escape too.
Franklin, Rachel’s husband, consoles Rachel. They can’t escape, they have to fight through. If his father, Reed Richards, was still around he could create a way to turn off the inhibitor collars.
Braniac 5 hears the idea, and wanting to help, creates a dampener. He thinks he is so clever, that he used Sentinel parts to create it.
Kate Pryde wastes so time and starts phasing through walls. She allows herself a small smile. Storm says that Kate is like an Apparition, which is what Shadowlass is going by currently. A tad on the nose but it is the late 90s.
The Legion wants to help the X-Men but both Magneto and Storm tell them not to help.
Access opens one of his portals and the Legion starts to go through it. Spark, who isn’t present (and I imagine is Lightning Lass). Storm mentions how Spark doesn’t have her powers, which Storm can completely relate too. Rachel and Saturn Girl have a telepathic moment. Ferro is about to step through the portal, when a Sentinel has found the X-Men. Poor Ferro doesn’t get a moment.
Nah, I”m just kidding. Colossus and Ferro totally team-up! It is as if there was a secret list of what people wanted to see out of a match up of the X-Men and the Legion. The only thing I wanted was Shadowcat and Shadowlass together but they barely are in the same panel together.
Since Ferro is made of metal (I think) Magneto flings him through the portal. Magneto then hand pushes Access through it.
The Sentinel locates the device that is keeping the inhibitor collars active. I’m not sure why the X-Men didn’t just have Kate take off the collars the moment she could. Then again, it doesn’t look like too much time passed between them having their powers and not having their powers, again. Wait, but they all had goodbyes and such, there was time.
The Sentinel shoots a harpoon (like one would do and kill Storm with in Days of Future Past) right through Magneto’s spine. Now we know how he lost the use of his legs.
Wolverine runs away, probably to join the Canadian Resistance. He knows the collars can turn off and willf ind a way to do it again.
Picking up with Access, again, we see he is about to get run over by a weird looking car. In time to save him, is Daredevil in his classic yellow costume.
I should have wrote about this before, but I really like the look and feel of Olliffe’s art style. I first feel in love with it, during Untold Tales of Spider-Man – written by Kurt Busiek. It makes the series have a wonderful timeless look.
Batman gets out of the batmobile and compliments Daredevil for the sweet save.
Daredevil senses that Access is suffering from a fever and needs a hospital.
Daredevil doesn’t recognize where he is, so they are in Gotham City. Batman offers to take the two of them to the Thompson Clinic.
Batman is super impress with Daredevil’s heighten senses. I like this complimentary Batman.
Access touches Daredevil and begins to teleport the two away. Batman seees the flash but Daredevil doesn’t.
I forgot to mention, once Access is gone, the characters forget what has been happening.
Access, in his sickness, starts bouncing between the two universes and time. He sees Fing Fang Foom and the Challengers of the Unknown. Devil Dinosaur and DC’s WWII hero, Enemy Ace. The awesome Justice Society of America and the Invaders.
Access is saved by Monty the bum from the original Marvel vs DC event. The two are shouting at each other, and Monty lets it out that Monty is Access, of the future. Which means, when Access saw him die in the event, he saw himself die. Monty, for clarity’s sake, reveals that Access can’t stay in one universe for too long. Since the two of them are in the same place and time, instead of being a door between two universes, they are now a floodgate.
Mont7 gets out of there.
Darkseid and all of Apokolips arrive. Access, quickly, knows how much trouble he is in. Shit got real! We learn that they are on the Marvel Earth and still the 60s. We know this as we see the original Avengers – Thor, Giant Man, Wasp, Iron Man and Captain America.
Kanto, who name checks himself (luckily) as he tries to kill Captain America, via sword blade. Kalibak (also name checking himself) throws Thor down. Thor does get to punch Kalibak as Giant Man tries to get into the fight but mostly watches. Mad Harriet jumps at Giant Man. Wasp stings Stompa.
I do like how the fights are pretty even, with good give and take.
The original Justice League – Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman and Black Canary – arrive, as Access has summoned them.
Dareseid tells Amazing Grace to do some mind tricks and the issue ends with the Avengers and Justice League about to fight each other.
Thus far, this is my favorite series under the Secret Wars 2015 umbrella.
Instead of being a series that takes place after the original storyline, this series takes place years prior to the original story. All of this is based off of few captions from Uncanny X-Men 141 –
So any new characters that we are taken with, we know their eventful state. So there is an element of heartbreak with this title. This is one of the more bleak series, I would add Inferno to that list.
Thanks to Marguerite Bennett’s X-Position at Comic Book Resources –
We know this character isn’t Kitty Pryde, but her daughter – Christina Pryde! So much of these first few pages are reminiscent of Uncanny X-Men 141.
New York City. Christina is thinking back to how the world use to be, I imagine she doesn’t have any first hand memory of it. Everything was fine until mutants showed up, then humans decided to blow up the world. Which is never a good idea. Christina, like her mother, is an optimist.
Somehow, she is attacked by a tiger! Good thing Wolverine is there to save her. Good job of Bennett to not have it be three tigers to match the number of rogues.
Wolverine isn’t sure why no one has eaten the tigers, with food being so scarce. He makes a reference to barbecue sauce but she doesn’t know what that is. She is looking for medicine and the tiger is there as all three are in the Bronx Zoo.
Wolverine calls her, Chrissie, but she wants to be called, Christina – so that’s what I’m going with. Wolverine remembers changing her diapers so he gets to call her anything that he wants. With her being (maybe) 18 – I bet she is 14 to match her mother’s first appearance – that makes sense.
Christina asks about Cameron, the son of Wolverine – but he got tangled up. Logan has a nose for trouble but Cameron only has a taste for it.
Christina shows Logan that she is the nice blend of her parents, through her words. Logan teases her and she calls him, a jerk, classic Pryde!
Christina asks Logan for his honest opinion, if he truly believes the flatscans will reverse the Mutant Control Act. He hints at how many mutants were killed in the first wave and now the rest are in internment camps. Logan tells Christina that she was the last mutant born. Mutants are sterilized now.
Christina leaves Logan’s side and tries to get back to her parents. She sees a few rogues, militia and more tigers.
A sentinel finds her but its mode of community seems pretty casual.
There is a SuperHeroStuff.com ad for a hero box that offers $70 worth of product for only $49, which sounds awesome. We tried, for Walker Dennis, a similar program called – Citrus Lane, which is a more affordable $30 but the items are not as awesome as superhero related merchandise.
The Sentinel is about to open palm blast when Kate Pryde jumps in front of Christina. The Sentinel calls Kate Pryde, Mutant 187 and she was instrumental to capturing mutants 234 & 339, ten years ago. I imagine the identities of these mutants will be important, later.
Christina wants to know if there is any news on Storm, but there are no new graves. Sentinels give everyone numbers but once the mutant dies, they get to have their mutant names placed on their tombstone.
What the Prydes were looking for are chemicals to dissolve the suppression collars.
Colossus reveals that it has been 15 years since they have been in this camp. Magneto promised Christina that he would make her a metal pony that gallops.
Meanwhile, aboard Air Force Once. President Robert Kelly wants to scare his fellow flatsfcans into not revolting the act. Kelly orders two folks, Martinez & Foster, to get some footage to remind idiots why they want to hate mutants.
South Bronx Mutant Internment Center. Kate and Rachel are having a chat. Kate references Xavier giving her a chemical set when she was fourteen. Rachel says, Doom rest his soul, which I do like how the books all respect that Doom is the god of Battleworld. They repeat that Christina was the last mutant birth before music was banned, the famine and the sterilizations.
Rachel goes around melting the collars.
The X-Men get out and Sentinels are quick to try to shut them down. Did they keep their uniforms?
The X-Men make short work of a Sentinel. In its final moment, it eye beams Christina.
This event is enough to trigger Christina’s mutant gene. She takes after he father though she reminds me more of Plantium of DC’s Metal Men.
Her parents thought that the collars would have made it impossible for Christina’s mutation to kick in but life always finds a way.
Later. New Kent Military Base. We see Iron Man on a pole, run through the middle. The two government aides wake Mystique and Blob, the two mutants Kate Pryde turned in. These two villains have been asleep for the past 15 years.
The X-Men are not leading to other mutants, to free them – they are heading towards a virus that can affect Sentinels.
We learn this region’s in-universe title is – United Doomstates Government.
Christina is the best choice to make this new plan work. Kate is not happy that her daughter is being burden with the task. Just like in the original story, a young Pryde is being tasked with the bulk of the mission. They want a photo op of Christina saving President Kelly. Christina is up for the task.
Rachel senses that Storm is alive, she tells Christina to head towards the Baxter Building, where Kelly will be. They have to find Wolverine.
A building is about to collapse and the X-Men start saving the humans who are now in danger. Mystique and Blob show up and accuse Kate of betraying her own kind. She doesn’t know what they are talking about, so maybe those two are not the ones that she turned in.
The government aides are filming the mutant on mutant battle.
Just then, Logan and Cameron arrive.
Wolverine starts fighting Mystique. Blob knocks out Christina and Cameron phases through Blob and rips him apart, so who is his mother? Once he comes out of Blob, he is covered in green, making me think he also resembled a Metal Man.
Christina can’t believe that Cameron just straight up killed Blob. I have no guesses on who Cameron’s mother is.
Issue ends with the new Green (Doom inspired?) Sentinels on their way.
Such a great first issue! Can’t wait for the rest of the series!
I just found out that at San Diego Comic Con 2014, that this box set is being offered! Hopefully I can get one of these through a proper purchase down the road as it will be super expensive to buy a con exclusive.
I own this for the Days of Future Past panel with Kate Pryde!
Issue opens with Sue and child Franklin hugging. He’s spent the last four years as Psi-Lord, a twenty year old with full use of his powers. Now he’s a child, and doesn’t remember missing years, he feels like he only missed a few minutes.
Nathaniel Richards, Reed’s father, was the guy that forced Franklin’s aging in the first place. Thing is ready to punch Nathan in his dumb face.
Reed gets Grimm to calm down. Nathaniel is an odd character, pretty much a douche but he’s Reed’s dad. Though it seems odd when Reed calls him, dad, Reed seems more like a guy who says “father.”
Nathaniel explains what his motivations were.
I had to check the issues to make sure that was Kate’s back of the head and not Storm but Kate was the only one to wear her hair up.
Nathaniel explains that there is a future, Days of Future Past, where mutants and heroes are killed and ruled by Sentinels. There is an off shoot alternate future (which seems overly complicated) where Rachel Summers and Franklin Richards had a baby, who grows up to Hyperstorm, a villain who has been messing with the Fantastic Four, for some time.
Sue can’t believe her grandson is the main villain. Reed has a plan on how to defeat Hyperstorm but he can’t reveal the plan out loud, as Hyperstorm is the master of time and space. His plan does involve Galactus.
There is an ad for Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Reed wants to go against Hyperstorm alone, as Nathaniel keeps stating that in every future, the Fantastic Four are dead. The team is going regardless. They are not bringing any of their friends though. The team goes to make their final goodbyes.
Johnny’s ex-wife, Lyja the Skrull, is hanging out with the team. Ben has feelings for her, which is so weird how those two are into each other’s gals. As Johnny eventually started getting into Alicia, who actually was Lyja. Johnny’s current girlfriend, Laura Green, is also Lyja, wanting to stay in Johnny’s life. She knows how messed up that and Ben is sympathetic to her situation as he overhears her using Green’s voice when talking to Johnny.
Franklin is down for a name and Reed is working on the space ship that will get him to where Galactus was last seen. Sue is coming, no matter what, and since this may be their last moment together, they are going to go bone.
Johnny kisses Laura and has a revelation and flies off.
Reed hugs Franklin and boards the ship with Susan. Nathaniel, Johnny and Ben are already on-board.
Galactus hasn’t been seen since Silver Surfer 109.
Reed sets up some tracers, and finds a faint trace to the dimension that Galactus was banished too. He is about to open a portal when Hyperstorm shows up. The team tries to take him down, as Reed tries to open the portal.
Franklin senses his family is in danger and wants to d something about it. Just then, a kid named Charlie shows up, he will help him out. This is setting up the last issues of the series as this Charlie is Charles Xavier, in kid form. This is setting up Onslaught. Which is pretty cool.
Bullpen Bulletins is promoting Onslaught : X-Men, which finally reveals who the traitor is that Bishop hinted at in his first appearances. It is Xavier, spoilers! Peter Parker is in the hospital, they think it is due to being a clone, but it isn’t. The Checklist for June 5th is :
Avengers Unplugged 6, with Black Knight and Blood Wraith
Captain America 454, with Sharon Carter, the final issue is coming up!
Daredevil 385, Pryo is in this issue
Spider-Man 2099 46, finale issue! I had no idea that 2099 ended as the Heroes Reborn titles start
Sensational Spider-Man 7, Peter Parker going to the hospital
Cable 34, vs Hulk, under the control of Onslaught
Onslaught : X-Men, pretty cool!
Uncanny X-Men 335, the X-Men, Avengers and X-Man unite against Onslaught. Shadowcat is in the issue, so we’ll review it one of these days.
Reed brings Galactus quasi-out of that dimension, he starts feeding off of Hyperstorm. Hyperstorm is a conduit to hyperspace, which is infinite. So those two are going to be linked together for maybe forever. The team and Reed’s father leave, as they are no longer in danger of dying. At least, that they think, but rot ruh, Onslaught is coming!

I bought this recently and it only cost me $2.50 instead of the $20 that some websites charged for it. It was a pretty good day! I still wish that there was a Kate Pryde attached to it.
