Hellfire Saga Part Three

To start with, Kitty and Lockheed only appear on the cover for this issue.  Kitty apparently had a big role last issue, and hopefully I can get that one one if these days.

Toad and Kid Omega are going through the Hellfire Academy, video game style.

My main take away from this issue is this, has Oya always been depicted as being 14 years old?  Seems like I have seen her drawn much older, and the outfit she dons is completely inappropriate for a 14 year old to wear.  How old is Quire suppose to be?  I say at least 18, and now I don’t like those two flirting with each other.

I know that Kitty was 14 and Colossus was 18ish, but I wasn’t cool with that either, but mostly as that ended horribly and I don’t like Colossus.

Just that a boy learns a bunch in those four years.

I just think Aaron made a mistake making her that young, at least make her 16.  Took Kitty forever to become 18 and then 21, and that is with at least two backtracks to keep her young.

Toad and Husk have a great moment this issue as well.

Kade Kilgore is going to get ruin next issue.

Boy, this blog is making me look like a prude, which I swear, I’m not, I just want 14 year olds to grow up without having to kill a bunch of dudes and not to be depicted as sex kittens.  Which in previous artists’ defenses, I’m sure they thought she was older.

That’s pretty much that for me, I thought she was older and really surprised she isn’t.

Paul Smith’s Run

Posted by John Klein III on July 29, 2013
Posted in: Paul Smith. Tagged: PMS, Uncanny X-Cast. Leave a comment

When asked what my favorite era or run in comics is, without a doubt, it is Paul Smith’s run on Uncanny X-Men, issues 165 to 175, with a Walt Simonsom issue thrown in there (because, you’re welcome).

Now, you could take out issue 171, just to have the Smith issues, but then you go straight from the Morlocks to Japan and Rogue just happens to be there.

I’m going to do the individual issues on their own at some point but I keep wanting to express my appreciation for this run.

All of them are written by Chris Claremont, all inked by Bob Wiacek, mostly all colored by Glynis Wein.

I own this run in the original issues. I own this run as reprints in X-Men Classic, issues 69 to 79, with Simonson’s issue being 75 (which I don’t own yet).  I am slowly getting my X-Men Classic issues completed, it just isn’t a priority at the moment, as they are only reprints.  Super affordable reprints to extremely expensive comics.  Well, considerably expensive comics.

I also own this run as the trade, From the Ashes, which is essentially a Paul Smith Visionaries trade, minus 165 / 166 / 167, which I get, as that’s the second half of the Brood Saga but I wish they would release a proper Paul Smith Visionaries trade, as I would totally buy it.  And not just wanting to buy it, making a point to add it to my wishlist, I mean, I would actually buy it when it first came out.  Unless they do one of those beautiful hardcover editions for $50, then I would have to budget for it.  Which once I could, then I would definitely buy it then. I like the idea of starting that trade in the middle of the Brood Saga, as you start with not knowing what is happening and it moves fast, and with Claremont’s writing, you get caught up fast.

Another nice thing about the run is that it bookends with double sized issues.  Another odd thing is that the last pages of 175 are drawn by John Romita Jr. Which works as a nice hand off to his long run on the title.  But it just gies to show how unique a production this run is.  Starts double sized and in the middle of a story – which I’m not sure why Cockrum left midway for, or did he just start it to give Smith a head start on 165?  Next, you get a fill-in with 171, and the run ends with Smith not even doing the entirely of the double sized 175, which I’m not sure why they choose to do it that way either.  It is an anniversary issue, so they knew people would pick it up, and they wanted people to be exposed to the incoming artist, JRJR, that would be my guess.

I also own this run as Essential X-Men Volume Four, which for my money, is the best collection of X-Men comics you can buy for not that much money.  It collects issues 162 to 179, Annual 7, and Marvel Graphic Novel issue 5, God Loves, Man Kills.  You get Dave Cockrum art at the start, and it ends ends with the would-be wedding between Kitty and Caliban, the follow up to the Morlocks story by JRJR.

I would love if Marvel would turn the Smith run into one of those Motion Comics DVDs.  That would be awesome.  It would be much longer than their previous DVDs, though they did release the Inhumans run, and that’s 12 issues.

The actual X-Men cast is : Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine and Colossus, so pretty much, as classic a line up as you’re going to get.

Paul Smith’s run pretty much can be broken down / quick summarized as:

165 – 167, Brood Saga.  Lockheed’s first apperance is 166.  The X-Men arrive back on Earth in 167.

168, the famous Kitty “Professor Xavier is a Jerk!” issue wherein Kitty earns her place on the team, instead of joining the more appropriate youth team, the New Mutants.  I should add here that Illyana has become Magik at this point, so these issues are when theycare becoming best friends.  Kitty and Lockheed become an official pair here as well.

169 / 170, first appearance of the Morlocks, 170 has the fanous Storm versus Callisto Callisto fight.

171, Rogue joins the tean, Simonson team.  He does the issue, as the real shame of Smith art work is that he packs his issues with so much detail that it takes him some time to get one completed but dman is it worth it ince it comes out.  Not as long as these kids today, but he just needed a buffer and, once again, no one is going to complain about getting a bonus Walt Simonson issue.  They definitely did not go with some B-Team, they kept it at top shelf quality.

172 / 173, the Wolverine would be wedding to Mariko issues in Japan.  Madelyne Pryor meets the X-Men, as well.  Kitty gives a sleeping Lockheed in a basket to Maddie to watch over is such a cute scene.  Maddie and Scott are engaged at this point.

174 / 175, Mastermind’s revenge plan on the X-Men, from what Jean did to him during the Dark Phoenix Saga.  Cyclops against the entire team, issue 175 ends with Scott abd Madelyne married.

So many great moments, can’t believe his legendary run is only nine issues, but two of them are double sized sized and its super rereadable.  Not dated at all, and you can pick it up and enjoy it.  The way it ends, you could have stopped reading X-Men comics altogether as it wraps up pretty nicely.

I’m sure I will bring up this run from time to time, but now you know where I am coming from when I do.  Such a classic run, and totally worth the read.

Would recommend buying the X-Men Classic issues, so you get them in color, it might set you back 20 to 25 dollars but the black and white Essential is great too, and you can really tell the genius of the art team without the color, but you see it as it was meant to be seen at least once.  The Essentials are $20, if I remember correctly, which is a real bargain.

Really tempted to download these issues from Comixology.  Probably will someday, but when I last checked, they didn’t have all if them available.

This post is the reason why I started this blog, as I can’t even tell you how often I would walk around thinking about summarizing my thoughts on this run (or get lost in a task and start thinking about it) and the man himself, who I would love to meet or get a sketch from, but he doesn’t really do the con circuits, but it would be nice to get any type of original art, as long as it had both Kitty and Lockheed, who he co-created.

This might just be for me, but I need to write this somewhere for easy access, but the Uncanny X-Cast episodes that cover these issues are 36, 37, 38, 40, and 41.

Also, at this time, Comixology only has issue 167 available for download so I just bought it at $1.99.  Hopefully they get the rest of the run eventually.

At this point, I’m not sure what I would do without comicbookdb.com in my life.  I love how fast I can verify if I own or need an issue.

Here is my collection:

http://www.comicbookdb.com/collection.php?ID=9634

Here is my wishlist:

http://www.comicbookdb.com/wishlist.php?ID=9634

When I get bored or don’t want to stop being online, I will browse through either one’s Cover Gallery, as I like seeing all the different art styles and eras over the years.

In addition to my quest to own every appearance or reference of Shadowcat, Lockheed, Magik and Uncanny X-Men 141 homage cover, I am also collecting every appearance of Ogun and Dr. Maureen LyszinskI.

Ogun who was introduced as a Wolverine villain, is essentially Kitty’s archnemesis.

Dr. Maureen Lyszinski was the psychologist Kitty was court ordered to see while she was in college.

Looking over my collection, I am also collecting every reference to the classic Excalibur lineup.

Hopefully those links work and you forgive my humble self bragging, now that I have reread it.  It was suppose to come off more of like how much of a superfan I am.

Cable and X-Force 6

Written by Dennis Hopeless

Art by Salvador Larroca

Colored by Frank D’ Armata

I bought this issue just for the two pages Kitty shows up for.

Cable and X-Force 6 Kitty 1

Cable and X-Force 6 Kitty 2

She brings Colossus some art supplies and a letter while he is in prison.  It is done very well, Hopeless captures her character nicely, Larroca draws her nicely and D’ Armata’s coloring gives the entire book a nice realistic feel.

Other things happen in this issue like it starts with Wolverine escorting Colossus to prison.  Colossus is there for what X-Force did in previous issues, but he really is there due to him wanting to repent for what he did during AvX.

Because of losing the Phoenix force, his powers are broken.  I really like how the art team displays how his powers are in flux.  Not sure if it is all D’ Armata, like I had first thought, but it could be a combination of him and Larroca as I’m not sure who draws the metal stripes that make up the actual power aspect of Colossus.  The flux power, from panel to panel, really gives these sections a nice kinetic feel.  I really get the impression that his armor form is appearing and disappearing on its own.  It is very interesting how it is done.

There is also a whole section of the comic wherein Meltdown is running around in what can only be described as barely a bikini.  Which I feel bad as I don’t view Larroca as one of those cheesecake artists.  I’m sure he will have no problem selling those pages in the Original Art sector.

It makes story sense, in that, she is trying to trick young dumb soldiers to let her into the prison, but I just don’t read comics for T&A.  It is one of those times, when I’m rereading the issue for this post, that I was hoping my wife wasn’t going to walk in on me reading those pages.

Meltdown is breaking into the same prison that Colossus is it.  She and Domino are trying to break out an alien under Cable’s orders as he got a new vision.

Issue ends with Cyclops wanting to speak to Cable, which sounds like a cool cliffhanger.

I did not buy the next issue, mostly just been skimming the issues to see  toif Kitty or Magik appear or are mentioned.

All New X-Men 14

All-New_X-Men_Vol_1_14

Colored by Marte Gracia

This issue has everything!  Fights, jokes, kissing (fake), illusion, Avengers

A great deal of sight gags and some actual funny dialogue.

Love how quick Wolverine was to cut Jean as she was projecting the Phoenix.  Good thing Scott was there to stop him.

All New X-Men 14 Kitty 1

Really dug the fight matchups.  Beast v Sabretooth.  Jean v Mystique.  Lady Mastermind and Jean one upping each other.

Really liked Mystique and Wolverine’s back and forth, and how Logan did know what was happening.

Scott switching opponents with Beast was a good idea.  I could had used more Beast and Sabretooth.

Jean making both Mystique and Sabretooth fall asleep, never been done before in a fight.

I like how Jean keeps apologizing for the Phoenix vision.

Kitty gets to show off smart, sass and fighting abilities with Lady Mastermind.  Love the correction of “Professor Kitty Pryde.”

With Kitty’s left hook, Immonen steals the show for the rest of the issue.

From Bobby’s fear of the Uncanny Avengers to his throwing a snowball at Thor, such great moments.  Also in the panel with Bobby being scared, Wolverine head goes down in shame.  Immonen is quite talented.

The Havok / Scott exhange and high five stole my heart.  I like how Alex is trying to have this relationship with Scott, that neither one of them has had before.

That last page with Jean and the Phoenix is odd, wish I had the last issue to see what that was about.

Next issue teases Jean and young Hank might be kissing.  It was super weird over in Claremont’s X-Men Forever, but who knows how it will play out here.

Also, this cover is musleading as well.

What I Bought 2013.7.22

This is my 25th post!!!

I bought All New X-Men 14.

Still no word if Hastings will get those two week’s worth of comics that didn’t come in.  I read some great buzz about issue 13, Kitty apparently gave a speech that put Havok’s speech from Uncanny Avengers to shame.

I also wanted to say thanks to the five followers that this blog has at this moment.  Thank you so much!  It really means a lot.

SDCC 2013 : Sunday

Posted by John Klein III on July 22, 2013
Posted in: Convention. Tagged: SDCC. Leave a comment

http://www.newsarama.com/18450-sdcc-13-marvel-x-men-panel-live.html

A little disappointed with the X-Men Sunday panel.  The Con is becoming less and less about comic announcements as people are reporting more and more about movie news.

Marvel is pretty good about making the upcoming other conventions have nice announcements.

I guess I was just hoping to get to see some new comic art.

Really glad that Wolverine’s lack of a healing factor will be address in all of his appearances, unlike Iceman’s recent evil turn.  Which will only ever be addressed in the future, when some character is listing off sone of Bobby’s lesser moments or when someone else gets their personality changed for the worst.

Glad Peter David is recovering well.

Love the Dodsons, so could not be happier to have them join the X-Men title.

Glad Nightcrawler is returning!  I just wished I liked that cast of characters slated to appear in Amazing X-Men.  Seems like the Astonishing cast, but with Beast but not really.  I would have liked Kitty and Kurt to be on the same team.  Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Northstar, and Firestar, decent lineup.  Firestar has not been with the mutants since her origin days back in the 80s.  Be curious why she would join now.  Has no real connection to Kurt, and only really with Iceman from the Amazing Friends cartoon.

http://www.newsarama.com/18460-dodson-joins-wood-for-x-men-s-battle-with-the-sisterhood.html

Actually, Newsarama has two follow up interviews from Sunday’s panels.

The Wood/Dodson one is cool.  I like how there is going to be a new Sisterhood of Mutants to fight this team of X-Men.  I guess some people might say its pretty obvious a villain group for them to fight but screw those people.  This is going to be awesome!

They are debuting a new Lady Deathstrike, which I don’t follow Wolverine closely so I’m not sure what happened to the old one or why the old one would want to revamp her image so completely with the skull face.  Apparently Wood reveals that her current state is a non-physical one.

http://www.newsarama.com/18459-the-amazing-x-men-search-for-nightcrawler-in-new-series.html

Can’t believe its only been three years since Kurt’s death in Second Coming.  A lot has happened in those amount of time.

So Amazing is going to be more of the Field team to Wolverine & the X-Men’s School Administrator Team.  That must be nice for Jason Aaron’s mind space, to be able to now separate the adventures in his mind.

Aaron gives some love to the original Excalibur comic, as he should.

Looks like Aaron wanted to include Firestar just because she is a mutant and has never been part of an X-Team before, only Avengers and New Warriors.

I keep wanting to add that after issue five of Amazing X-Men, will not have to distinguish between Volume One and Volume Two as the Age of Apocalypse title only lasted the four issues that all of those titles got.

SDCC 2013 : Saturday

http://www.newsarama.com/18438-sdcc-13-20th-century-fox-x-men-movies-and-more-live.html

So happy with the FOX  movie panel, I bet that must have been a blast to be in attendance!

So it is up to Future Xavier to send Wolverine into the past, not Kitty.  I can live with that.

I guess it also makes sense to do it this way as it isn’t like the future is 2044 and the present is today.   Movie Kitty could not have been alive during the 70s, and Comic Kitty would have been just a baby, as she was only 13 and a half in 1980.

Sounds like the cast gets along well.

I would love to see a Broadway show with both Magnetos.  I know Stewart and McKellen did a play together years ago that must have been amazing.

Ellen Page seemed to be having fun with the actor who plays Bishop in this movie.

…

In other movie news, so glad the Avengers are not going into space in their sequel.  Was not looking forward to that!

I know Bendis had plans for Age of Ultron for a while, as he gave Hitch like a year to get his four issues completed.

I know the movie will have absolutely nothing in common with the comic, as that seems to be a lot to put in a movie.  Plus, they are not going to do alternate timelines AND time travel in a two hour movie. Wish they grabbed Ultron Unleashed as the title and movie plot, as that would work so well with the movie cast and it is a quasi-simple straight forward concept.  Killer robot picks a small nation, completely destroys it on live television, and the Avengers have to set right what once went wrong.

So excited about the next couple years for comic movies!
