Shadow and Flame with Magik

Issue opens with Bombshell, putting on her uniform for the first time in a while. She is mentally trying to psych herself up, rehearsing her opening line to the team. She can’t settle on the right opening line. Which I like how she puts out a strong image but has concerns about being re-accepted.

Midtown Manhattan. Spider-Man is helping move a car. Once he is done with his good deed, Diamondback throws a pebble at him. He jounces over to her. She is on the run since the Serpent Society made enemies of every gang the city has to offer. Turf lines meant nothing to them. One can’t expand without ruining someone’s day. She’s trying to hide and wants Spider-Man’s protection. We see that they are being watched by a sniper.

Diamondback kisses Spider-Man, she slips him some tongue, through the mask, which seems weird. She gets a dart to the forehead. Spider-Man turns around to see Taskmaster is a second shooter. Taskmaster appeared in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 26 & 27, and now here.

Taskmaster reveals that he doesn’t know who Diamondback is, he is there only for Spider-Man and shoots him with a dart. Sidewinder is not happy with this turn of events.

Chelsea. Jessica Drew’s Apartment. Shadowcat is moving out. The uproar over she defeated Galactus, has started dying down. She is ready to move back in with her mother.

I really like how Encyclopedic Emily provided an editor footnote. I miss those! I remember when, during Busiek’s run on the Avengers, that they tried to first do away with footnotes but add the would be references onto the letters page. Which worked until they got rid of the letters page. Comics may be better produced nowadays but they lack a little soul.

Jessica references Cloak and Dagger, so the team doesn’t even know they should be missing them.

Shadowcat assures Jessica that she isn’t quitting the team. It will be foolish to do so as their title is being cancelled in two issues plus their universe is coming to an end come Post-Secret Wars III (2015) whatever we are calling it.

I like Fiffe / Jessica having fun with the concept of having branches – Queens Ultimates, West Coast Ultimates and All New Great Lakes Ultimates.

Ultimates is a weird word to keep reusing, did they ever bring that up in Millar / Hitch’s Ultimates, how ‘Ultimates’ is not a word.

Shadowcat is not quitting, she only wants to spend time with her mother.

Turns out, Taskmaster is Jessica’s across the hall neighbor. He opens the door and shoots both of them with darts.

O’Reilly’s Private Gym. The former officer is working out with former living officer, Terry Schreck. Schreck is able to continue conversations and punch things. Amazing what not living in a sewer makes you capable of.

They are no longer officers as the department didn’t like them working with super teens. They are going to go rogue and take down some crooks, off the book.

Deladier Tower. Uptown. We need Ecstasy, aka Renee Deladier and Mr. Jip, Estasy’s 2nd in command. Apparently, Ecstasy is the one who hired Femme Fatale to eliminate the Ultimates. She isn’t happy about their failure. Jip would like her to call an ambulance as he can no longer feel his arms.

Bombshell has made it to Drew’s apartment. Taskmaster is trying to get paid triple his amount to include Shadowcat and he’ll even throw in an extra person. Which my first couple reads, I thought he meant Kitty but I got that he means Diamondback now.

Bombshell sees Taskmaster with the ladies and blasts at him, he returns the power, so Ultimate Taskmaster has that ability.

Outside. Sidwinder is jacking Taskmaster’s van. Taskmaster throws Shadowcat and Spider-Woman into the back of the van, we see Cloak & Dagger, so those two must have been hit with non-lethal sniper bullets or something. Which explains why they are on the cover of the Ultimate Universe : The End promo piece.

I’m glad they are not dead.

Taskmaster closes the van, as Sidewinder drives off. Which is pretty funny. Taskmaster shoots a hook like he as Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. So he is being carried along and Bombshell is blasting her way after him, so it is a chase within a chase.

From time to time, I believe it has been four times now, I have submitted comics to sell to Lonestar Comics. Which is a great company to sell comics too. My only problem, and I’m glad I have a blog now, so that I can start tracking it, is that the check I get back is rarely near the amount I initially thought it would be. Sometimes it is twenty or fifty dollars less. I don’t complain about the difference, as my grading and their professional grading are vastly different.

If I was doing store credit, the amount would be $447.66 but that defeats the purpose.

I’m also going to keep track of how much this cost and such, as I haven’t kept good notes before.

The goal is to do this giant shipment and then, do smaller ones every month afterwards.

It took a couple hours but I now have three crammed short comic boxes. Once I tighten the other boxes, I had emptied two additional boxes. Which now leaves me eight boxes left to slowly sell. By contrast, my Shadowcat collection is now fifteen boxes.

I couldn’t locate three comics –

So I must have sent those before or mis-entered them.

It cost $112.40 to ship these boxes! Which seems insane to me! Forty dollars each? Outrageous! I guess I was really hoping it would be closer to $90 at thirty each.

Box One was 31 lbs at $41.69
Box Two was 24 lbs at $33.55
Box Three was 27 at $37.16

For a total of $112.40, which I’m sure the UPS lady gets that a lot. If the plan goes the way I would like, this should be the last expensive box and then I will use the United States Postal Service’s Flat Rate box at either sixteen for a medium box or twenty one dollars for a large flat rate box. That’s the goal anyways.

So now it is a matter of waiting until the boxes get there (by Thursday) and get the check in the mail. So exciting!

The Planet Cor. Light years from the armpit of the Cosmos. Quill is in a bar, interviewing a horse shaped alien. The horse fella is still troubled, two weeks after the situation. Quill wants information on Mister Knife. He wants to stop him, and that is a Peter Quill Promise.

The Planet Kymellia III. Inside the Ghostmare Vaults.

Mister Knife has a team that does his killing for him. The Slaughter Squad. Nux Vomico, the Snark. Delphinia, the Exiled Centaurian. Misa, the Shi’ar Hunter. Czar Doon, the Badoon. Father Diablo, the Priest from Planet X. Raksor the Skrull.

Two horse guards stand before the vault. One of the guards says some horse puns or horse related comments. “Great horse” “In the name of Whitemane” Misa opens her mouth and kills these two with hot fire. A third horse guard comes out and shifts into Raksor, getting a big introduction.

Quill buys himself and the horse guy another round.

The next wave of guards are known as, The Kymellian Steel Brigade. I am ashamed to mention to mention that it wasn’t until I read the word, Kymellian, for the second time that it finally dons on me that this is the alien race that gave Power Pack their powers.

One of the brigade states, Steel your heart and harden your steel, which for some reason, I really like. I like how it starts and ends with ‘steel’ and how heart and harden sound similar enough.

Quill gets phone call and interrupts the story. It is our favorite intangible X-Man, Shadowcat! Kitty is not pleased that it has been two days since their last cancelled date.

I like how Kitty stands up for herself. She may not need to be a man’s top priority but she doesn’t want to be more invested in a new relationship than the guy. If he isn’t going to make time for her, she is out. Quill sets up another date with her, in two days.

Kitty mocks the “Peter Quill Promise” so now we know it doesn’t have much weight.

Quill explains he was having girl problems but the horse guy doesn’t care. I wish he was given a name. The horse guy implies the brigade is the toughest gang in the galaxy, Quill disagrees as he is a member of the toughest gang in the galaxy.

The squad straight kills the brigade. Now that no horsies are in the way, the squad makes their way to a giant Jupiter like sphere in the room. Father Diablo extends his shadowy essence and moves the sphere. The sphere, once moved, reveals The Unseen Chamber.

Quill doesn’t believe the story anymore, and forces Lucien – that’s the horse narrating the story. Lucien swears an oath that he is telling the truth by lifting his right hand up like we would do before taking the stand.

Back to the story, the squad enters the chamber. Once there, they see . . .

The Black Vortex! The item of the upcoming same titled crossover that starts in February.

They have been instructed to not look directly at it. Nux, the more idiotic of the group, disregards that suggestion and stars right at it and loses his mind. Once he touches the glass, he dies.

We are finally introduced to Mister Knife, who doesn’t look as cheesy as the name implies. We actually saw him on the cover to Legendary Star Lord 3.

Mister Knife instructs them to pack up the Black Vortex.

Quill doesn’t believe Lucien’s story, at all. Lucien points a gun at Quill. Quill knew Lucien was really Raksor. A cloaked figure rams an axe through Raksor’s hand and into a table. When ‘Lucien’ performed the oath, he should have put his fist over his heart. Quill dated a Kymellian for two weeks, so he knows the horse race well.

This also explains why Raksor got such a big introduction.

Issue ends with the cloak figure being revealed to be Drax!

Next issue is Date Night with Kitty and the Slaughter Squad!

Girls’ School From Heck Part Three of Three

Lockheed isn’t in issues 31 and 32. It only took us two years to review these three issues! This is Claremont’s final issue of Excalibur.

This issue also concludes Lockheed Month! How fitting!

Issue opens with Kitty and Huntsman tracking Miss Rutherford to leave town for a bit so that they and several other students can get to the football game. Rutherford is under the impression that she is going to meet with Courtney Ross and get a giant loan from the bank. She gets on one train and the other students get on another.

Mesmero is testing out his control over Excalibur. I’m surprised Lockheed is there as I wouldn’t think he would be under mind controlled. Maybe he’s just watching over the team and not understanding what the problem is. Mesmero is tempted to make it so that Rachel falls in love with Alistaire but chooses not too. His villain days, he’s trying, to put them behind him. Alysande shows up, Mezmero can’t mesmerize her. He wonders why he is able to do it to her twin brother but not her. Probably due to all of that military training. Captain Britain punches her unconscious.

On the train. The young ladies are trying their routine. Their train passes by the train that is carrying Miss Rutherford. Kitty tells the gals that she is Shadowcat of Excalibur. They have the nerve to get mad at her for not telling her. She is meant to share all of her secrets, while they were being extremely rude to her. The get to the stadium, they have to share the same locker room the American cheerleaders, who are older and built like supermodels.

We learn the Fenris twins are the ones trying to employ Mesmero. But it isn’t Mesmero, it is Meggan and a huge fight breaks out.

At the stadium. The audience is getting behind the students and their routine, which makes sense as they are the hometown team.

Naturally, the battle take place right next to the stadium. Kitty sees the Phoenix Effect and knows that Excalibur is back home. She ditches the routine to help assist her old team. Captain Britain is the first to see Kitty. The girls leave the field to help Kitty. Which is odd as what are they going to do to help?

Meanwhile, Kitty comes across Mesmero. He promises he isn’t going to take advantage of her, too much – the sicko! Lockheed gets so angry!

Lockheed and Kitty are reunited! Excalibur snaps out of their stance. Mesmero is trying to get away, as are Fenris but the school girls are there to block their path.

Unfortunately, the American cheerleaders won the competition. Excalibur is finally reunited after 20 issues!

Courtney Ross brokers a deal that the football players will use Miss Rutherford’s school as a training ground. So everybody wins!

The Letters Page is filled with letters from – Tim Ellsworth from Canton, OH; Nathan Little from Lafeayette, CO; Tracy Schmick; John Tze-Change Wu aka Briareos Hechatonchires and Christopher Dain Burton. The Letters Page ends with an announcment of a Kitty Pryde fanzine and fan club. Jeffrey C. Young, Editor/typist; Robert J. Spassov, President and Marson Fedrick, Vice President. I would have sent a letter, though I probably would have just sent it to Mr. Spassov. I wonder how long it lasted.

Sam Humphries is writing a Secret Wars 2015 tie-in series starring the Star Lord that we know and the Shadowcat of the Age of Apocalypse universe! So I guess she isn’t dead now, that is great news! They had a chance to revive her during that last Age of Apocalypse storyline but they didn’t and the series got cancelled. Coincidence? I think not!

Book Two : Inversion – Chapter One

Kitty made the cast list, so we know we are in for a good time!

SHIELD Helicarrier Iliad. Above the Atlantic. Is it really a good idea to name the Helicarriers, with how often they crash?

FalCap and Hulk are meeting with Fury Jr. and Maria Hill. Fury Jr. keeps saying things that implies that he’s been doing this for years or decades, instead of the year he really has been doing it.

The Stark Sentinels have been dismantled. The Red Skull camps have been torn down. Fury refers to the events of the previous three issues as – World War Hate.

Hill wants the Red Skull handed over to SHIELD, as they have a special containment facility built specially for him. Which seems like a waste of expenses, as long as it is a SHIELD prison, Red Skull should be able to break out of it within a month.

FalCap is acting way crazier and more confident, just because he has the title of “Captain America” people are treating him differently and it is going to his head. I know he is under the Inversion spell, so he has that excuse but he was acting like the top boss in the first issue and that was prior to the spell. Honestly, just because he got a temporary promotion, I don’t get how or why the characters around him are tooting his horn so much.

Hill states that no one has seen Stark in days.

Hulk is a simpleton here, which seems odd as I know in his own title, he is suppose to be a genius, or at least, able to form proper sentences. FalCap shuts down what he has to say and goes as far as to tell Hulk that he didn’t ask for his opinion.

As FalCap is leaving, he punches Fury Jr. to his silly face. He calls Scarlet Witch so she can schedule an Avengers meeting but to leave Steve Rogers out of it.

Bushwick, Brooklyn. A street level villain, the Squid, has a family hostage as outside, the police are not helping matters. Just then, Carnage breaks through the window and subdues the criminal and his gang, the Tentacles. Pretty clever. Carnage leaves a note behind, calling himself Friendly Neighborhood Carnage. Spider-Man isn’t thrilled to see that note but he is impressed that Carnage didn’t kill anyone nor take their money.

San Francisco, Giants Stadium. Iron Man appears at a game. Iron Man offers his Extremis App to those in attendance. The app turns your inner beauty to your outer beauty, so you don’t have to live with any more imperfections. He tells them that the app is free and it is already in their phones, so they only have to activate it. Those who will use it will be more attractive and never age. Matt Murdock is at the game. This is essentially setting up the opening issues of Superior Iron Man, guest starring Daredevil. Pretty cool to have two heroes calling San Francisco, their home.

This section ends with Tony drinking alcohol.

Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. Storm is presenting a speech. Kitty is on the stage, second from the right. We’ll see a better angle of her on the next page. She is standing between Rogue and Colossus. This wouldn’t be a bad roster – Sunspot / Jean Grey / Storm / Havok / Nightcrawler / Rogue / Shadowcat / Colossus. It would be a pretty old school team but that’s an A-List roster! I guess it would be Uncanny Avengers plus Excalibur with Storm and Jean thrown in there.

Storm is tired of all of the humans trying to kill them, this latest attempt will be their last.

Oya whispers that she thought Quire defeated Red Skull, as he clearly told her that.

Storm references how the humans created these camps and are responsible for other bad events that have effected mutant kind. Xavier is gone and Wolverine is dead. A mutant controlled by a cosmic being killed Xavier and Wolverine foolishly open up a vat of adamantium and allowed it to spill all over himself. Sure a human pressed the button to start the adamantium pumping into the vat, but Wolverine could have diffused the situation a number of ways.

Why are Kitty’s hands as if she is being arrested? Colossus appears to be doing the boy version of that.

Storm is going on about no more mutant on mutant fights. I guess the Schism is officially over now. It only took three years.

Not only that, but Storm is talking about out right attacking the humans.

Havok, whose face is messed up (when did that happened as it appears find in issue three) takes the mic. Xavier’s dream is no longer the X-Men philosophy.

The new philosophy? Apocalypse’s Survival of the Fittest. Apocalypse is the new leader of the X-Men! He stands with Storm, Havok and Cyclops, so this is for real.

FalCap is not happy that the X-Men are forming an army. At the Avengers meeting is – Wasp, Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Medusa, Luke Cage and Boy Thor.

Wasp doesn’t want to fight the X-Men, she still remembers the time she and Havok were married and had a daughter. Boy Thor wants a battle and they know the X-Men are coming for Red Skull who may be a shell for Xavier. Luke Cage also doesn’t want a fight, he wasn’t on Genosha, so he isn’t affected by the Inversion spell. Medusa was there, so she is glad to be free of Inhumans and feeling responsible for them as their Queen.

To prevent the X-Men getting Red Skull, FalCap suggests they just kill Red Skull. All but Hulk doesn’t want to go through with it. Their big plan is to present Red Skull to the X-Men and kill them while they are distracted – which I bet would work.

Jarvis is the only thing standing between the Avengers and Red Skull. Scarlet Witch hits him with a force spell, knocking him to his feet. Hulk is concern for Jarvis and helps him back up. Now the Hulk is blocking the Avengers from the Red Skull. Cage punches Hulk to the ground and Boy Thor threatens that Hulk will be buried next to Red Skull, which makes Hulk sad.

The Hulk is Bruce Banner’s Rage and Kluh is Hulk’s rage – which is a thing, apparently. Kluh is hulK backwards, get it? Pretty clever.

Kluh wants to fight and kill. Kluh refers to Hulk as ‘Doc Green’ who is suppose to be a version of Hulk with Bruce’s mind. Kluh charges out of a wall and into the general public.

Issue ends with the Avengers discovering that Red Skull has escaped.

There is an ad for Superior Iron Man, Tony gone bad. Just like Superior Spider-Man, it is a whole new branding situation.

87th Academy Awards

Hulu actually has the award show, broken up over three parts, so I will watch this eventually but really, that year with the Writer Boycotts, and the award show was just a few people reading the awards, I would be more than fine with that being the norm.

Also, it is going to take many hours to watch the show at 15 to 30 minute intervals so I wasn’t worried about spoiling the results.

I mostly wanted to see if X-Men Days of Future Past won its Oscar, it didn’t, it went to Interstellar. On my way down to that result, I caught that Michael Keaton didn’t win Leading Male Perfromance, so that is highly disappointing as well. I figured X-Men wasn’t going to win but Keaton not winning stinks.

It reminds me how I’m still mad at the academy giving Sean Penn the Oscar instead of Bill Murray for his performance in Lost in Translation. Bill Murray only has one chance at winning an Oscar and they have since given Penn an additional Oscar. It drives me crazy sometimes when I see Bill Murray being brave in interviews for various other projects.

Glad Birdman won Best Picture, as did its director, Alejandro Inarritu – that should make Alex of www.andsoitbeginsfilms.com blog very happy, I love his film blog so much! Birdman also won for Original Screenplay. It also won Best Cinematography, which from what I heard, makes perfect since with what the ‘trick’ of the film’s direction.

Juilanne Moore is finally an Oscar winner, so that’s terrific! I need to watch, Still Alice.

JK Simmons being an Oscar winner feels like a big win, I have loved that man for years now!

Big Hero 6 won Best Animated Feature, so that’s awesome for Marvel! Now let’s get a Pet Avengers film in the works! Do it Marvel!

The Edward Snowden documentary, citizenfour, won the Best Documentary, so that seems pretty brave.

“Glory” from Selma, winning Best Original Song seems like a consolation prize for the entirely white nominees in all the other categories. I imagine with NPH hosting the award show, that he would make a joke about that.

. . .

We got through the award show, my wife fell asleep during it. It was a pretty boring show, outside of NPH, who did make the all white jokes, good for him!

I had forgotten some celebrities died, this year. Apparently a bunch of people are upset that Joan Rivers wasn’t shown, she was great in Spaceballs but I’m not the biggest fan of her gimmick.

This is one of those large Treasury sized comics. It doesn’t even fit on most of my bookshelves. It spends most of its time on its back.

Poor Excalibur, cannot escape going to alternate Earths! This story, if you are not that familiar with Lightning Force, the Excalibur from a world where the Nazis won WWII and are still in charge.

I like the back issue description –

The powerful Captain Britain, the shape-changing Meggan, the intangible Shadowcat, the swashbuckling Nightcrawler, the mysterious Phoenix, and Lockheed the Dragon . . .
Forged in the fires of their tragic pasts, they have banded together to fight a modern-day crusade against the forces of evil.
An age-old evil has firmly established itself in another dimension. But now, realities are crossing and the malevolent power-with the help of some well-known mutants-threats to gain a foothold on Earth.

I just like that Lockheed gets a mention.

The issue opens at a concentration camp. There are new members joining the camps and an old group going into the chambers. The ones in the chambers are killed and their energy is transformed into psychic energy. This causes Rachel to lose her mind. The rest of the team come to see what is the matter.

When Rachel sees Kitty, she sees the Shadowcat from Lightning Force – from Excalibur 10.

Alistaire shows up and yells at the team. This is the first indication that the team woke up not on the right Earth.

We see who is Hitler’s second in command, and it is Charles Xavier! He is in charge of the camps and killing people to make himself stronger.

Excalibur heads over to the Nazi headquarters.

Kitty, naturally, hates having to talk to Nazis. Captain Britain hates seeing his country being overrun by such filth.

We see that the Red Skull is Hitler’s right hand man. They are suspicious of what Xavier has been up to. Xavier is close to making his big move.

The Nazis are mad as Excalibur is showing their proper respect. Kitty mistakenly refers to the team as Lightning Force, our first hint at something odd is going on. Something more odd. Excalibur tries to fight their way out of the room. Rachel takes out Kitty, as she wants to try to get the team under control. She wants them to play along, until they can figure out what is happening.

Excalibur is sent to see Moira MacTaggert, who we have seen in earlier issues of Excalibur.

I don’t get why Kitty is so surprised to see Moira, they were told who they were going to see on just the previous page.

Rachel explains, telepathically, what is happening. The Nazi Earth and the Proper Marvel Earth are merging. Which may be the first example of an Incursion that I know of. At least at Marvel, Incurions seem to be just what Crisis of Infinite Earths were all about but two Earths at a time.

Kitty can’t stand all of this Nazi nonsense and punches Moira.

This is the last page that feature Lockheed, for some reason.

Moira’s Reichsmen show up – Nazi versions of the X-Men – Havok / Rogue / Psylocke / Banshee / Storm. Captain Britain fights Havok. Meggan pairs off with Rogue. Nightcrawler takes out Banshee. Kitty sadly fights a very scarred Storm. Rachel goes against Psylocke. Kitty and Brian both regret fighting these last two as they are believed dead, at this point in time.

Once the fighting is over, Moira explains that she is our Moira but in the Nazi body. She has a plan but Brian, Meggan, Kurt and Kitty have to dress as their Lightning Force counterparts.

Elsewhere. Xavier is showing Red Skull around. Funny seeing these two together with out in modern comics, Red Skull has Xavier’s brain in his head.

We see what happened to the Original Five X-Men here. Cyclops is hung upside down, and his optic blasts are being used as an energy force. Angel was skinned alive and they figured out his wings were real. Beast seems to just have been killed for killing sake. Iceman is brainwashed and is opening up Polaris’ head. I believe that it is Jean who is in a tank, she is there as she turn down Xavier’s advances.

Later, Xavier has a meeting with Hitler. Seeing him in this issue, even though he is missing his right arm, is bald and in a wheelchair – it starts to turn my stomach. I was ‘okay’ with the story until Hitler actually showed up. Xavier mocks him, he’s an old man and it is now time for a younger man to lead the party. Red Skull is not thrilled with the open defiance.

Shortly. Lightning Force shows up at one of the camps. Rachel leads them to an abandon room, where she will be staying as people are only expecting a four person team. I feel so bad for Kitty, not only does she have to wear that cloak but she had to draw a Star of David on her head, which must have really messed with her head.

Another group of people die in the chamber and this causes Rachel a major migraine. Kurt slaps her, which is also unsettling to see. It works and it calms her down but I feel like that is still unnecessary.

Lightning Force finds Xavier. Kitty is disgusted to see him so fully evil. He hits them with a mental blast and knocks them out.

At the same time. Red Skull hooks Hitler up to a machine and it starts turning Hitler younger. It is an extremely painful process, which makes sense.

The Phoenix Force can’t stand this anymore and gives some of its powers to Excalibur and they take down Xavier. Fortunately, Red Skull was linked to Xavier and so Red Skull dies. Also super good timing, Hitler is still strapped to the device and can’t get out of it and it reverted to a teenager. He is then turn into a baby, then a weird glop of something and finally a piece of sperm.

The two Earths are split. Excalibur wakes up, trying to shake off this adventure. Alistaire shows up, and they are confident that they are back on the right planet.

Issue has a special pin-up at the back, so we get to see Lockheed one last time!
