Nice Bendis rundown of all of his events he has a role in.  Hadn’t thought about it before but he has headline the most events of any creator, pretty impressive.  Also nice that Kurk Busiek and JM DeMatteis were on the panel!

Bendis references 22 Ways to End the Clone Saga, which I totally bought and adored!  A bunch of inside baseball but I feel like I recognized most names and positions and was able to follow it.

http://www.newsarama.com/22371-nycc-2014-marvel-75th-x-men-w-len-wein-chris-claremont-many-more-live.html

This is a panel I wish I could see with all of these legends!  Rick Leonardi, Fabian Nicieza, Walt Simonson, Louise Simonson, Chris Claremont, Len Wein!

Nice that Walt got to tell the story of why he did Uncanny X-Men 171.  Probably so Paul Smith could catch up with the rest of the run.

It was mostly a retread of things people have said already but if they released this on DVD, I would buy a copy.  Or at least, plan on buying it eventually!

The Saturday Wolverine panel is where all of the news will come from or the Cup of Joe panel

http://www.newsarama.com/22373-marvel-comics-teases-no-more-mutants-to-retailers.html

There will be an Avengers story called, No More Mutants.  I like the idea of Marvel having fun with the idea that people are under the impress that the X-Men (as a concept) is going to be shelved due to FOX having the movie rights.  I don’t like the idea of them actually doing it, so I’m cautious and skeptical.

We got confirmation that the X-Men will be heavily involved in Secret Wars 2015 (not sure if its III or IV – as there was a Deadpool story that billed itself as Secret Wars III), so that’s a good thing.

Looks like I’ll be buying whatever that image is eventually used as it is an homage of Uncanny X-Men 141.

X-Men No More Mutants January 2015

http://www.newsarama.com/22382-nycc-2014-marvel-animation-presents-live.html

Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon test footage within the link!  It looks pretty good.  Now that we cancelled our Cable and went Hulu Plus, we no longer have the Disney channels, which I forgot I was getting hyped for Spider-Verse in animated form.  How awesome would it be if Guardians could continue Kitty Pryde and Peter Quill’s relationship in animated form?  That would be incredible!  I also just want to get Walker Dennis a plush Groot and Rocket!

Still no announcement about Pet Avengers the Animated Series.  One of these years, we’ll get it!

NYCC 2014 – Thursday

http://www.newsarama.com/22367-more-2015-marvel-secret-wars-details-image.html

At first, I wasn’t going to write about this as I didn’t think it was going to be X-Men related.  Which is silly as the X-Men played important roles in the previous two series.  Marvel has announced that in 2015, we are getting a new Secret Wars!

The creative team will be Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic.  Which tells me this wasn’t going to be fun like the first Secret Wars.  I bet it will be philosophy heavy like the second one tries to be.

There was also the thought that this would be like Brian Michael Bendis / Gabriele Dell’otto 2004’s Secret War, that just shared a similar title.  Especially as both artists are painters.

Then the second article came out.  Now it just seems like Spider-verse, but with the Avengers.  I like seeing MC2’s American Dream but like how Newsarama pointed out, no X-Men are present.

I do wonder if this is going to tie into the movies fourth wave, Avengers IV : Secret Wars.  With the recent announcement of Sony and Marvel working on a deal so that Spider-Man can be in the Marvel films, this would be a worthy enough name for such an event.  Maybe even try to work with FOX to get Hugh Jackman as Wolverine like how he wanted to do it last year.

The lack of X-Men is disappointing but it is only one image and two stories within a few hours but these are my initial thoughts.

If the Sinister Six film bombs, then that gives Marvel more leverage in the deal, which is an odd head space for two companies to have.  Just pull the trigger on the deal.  But I’m a guy who still hasn’t seen Amazing Spider-Man 2, so I may be part of the problem.

There are two X-Men panels at NYCC this year, so I am excited about those.

WWE Vengeance 2001

In December 2001, Chris Jericho accomplished the greatest achievement I thought he could ever do.

He not only defeated Stone Cold Steve Austin to win the WWE World Title

Thanks to DailyMotion poster Main_Eventer for hosting the video

but he also defeated The Rock to win the WCW World Title

Thanks to DailyMotion poster yiyi_marginal for hosting a two part video

To become the first Undisputed Champion in WWE History in maybe thirty years!

Chris Jericho Undisputed Champion

I’m still conflicted on how I feel that once he lost the title to Triple H, and how HHH got a fancy new merged title – one would think Jericho would have had the honor of actually holding that title first.  Though I imagine it is much cooler to carry the actual two titles.

I read Chris Jericho’s second book, Undisputed: How to Become the World Champion in 1,372 Easy Steps, just to finally read more about the decision behind it as it is a crazy one.  2001 was such a transition year of talent with established names taking a back seat to grow the mid-carders into main eventers.

One would think to just have the honor of being the first Undisputed Champion would go to Steve Austin or the Rock and then just drop the title to the next guy who will have the official run to it.  I extremely admire Vince for taking the chance on Jericho and realizing the situation he was in at the time.  Austin was ‘retiring’ due to medical problems and the Rock was going to Hollywood.  He only had these two on temporary basis, at best.  Jericho could grab the titles and have an awesome three month run with it.  And he really did!

At the Royal Rumble, he had to defeat the Rock to officially claim the titles.

At No Way Out, he had to defeat Steve Austin (a DVD that is extremely hard to find!)

At Wrestlemania 18, he lost it to returning HHH – which was just a matter of time as its HHH and it was the early years of 2000 when, if HHH was in a match, 90 percent of the time, he was going to win it and there was really nothing one could do about it.  But I like HHH, so I was okay with it (for the most part).

All New Ultimates 4

All New Ultimates 4

Writer Michel Fiffe

Artist Amilcar Pinna

Colorist Nolan Woodard

Letterer VC’s Clayton Cowles

Somehow I missed posting this!  My system must have a hole in it as I can’t figure out how I missed it.

I really like the cover design, there are some fun touches!  Kitty is on a towel with a slew of Xs on it.  Jessica has a spider web motif bathing suit.  Dagger has a miniature dagger on her bikini top.  I do feel bad that Bombshell doesn’t have a defining motif besides the coloring – but she’s still a new character.  A fun thing additional could have been #*(@& which is often shown as censored profanity as that’s how I first met the character, she had a bit of a foul mouth.  But I haven’t seen that side of her in this title, so maybe she matured out of swearing, just to do it.

I reread issue two and I can confirm now that the design of Bombshell’s bikini is the same as the design on her hero costume’s legs.  It would have been nice if she donned her costume in this issue.  Now that I notice her bikini / costume connection, Kitty and Jessica’s fall under that too.  Kitty wearing all white, just like she did in Ultimate Comics X-Men and Jessica in black and red, just like her costume.  Jessica also has a spider on her mobile phone.

What I am getting at is, a lot of thought clearly went into this cover.

This is also a cover, I tried to make sure my wife didn’t see.

The beach issue!  Pinna’s art really picked up this issue, which I’m not sure if that is due to the ladies being in bikinis – I would like to think it isn’t – but it is better.

Off the west side highway.  This opens with the not-so-dead cop who is now a reptile.  He falls into the sewer.  I really have no interest in the villains of this series – thus far.

All New Ultimates 4 Shadowcat A

Coney Island Arcade.  Kitty and Bombshell are playing air hockey.  I do love me some air hockey.

Jessica is watching Dagger play a shooting game.  I am lucky that Kitty has long hair and Jessica short, as I am not sure if I would be able to tell them apart.

All New Ultimates 4 Shadowcat B

Kitty lies to a couple that she isn’t who they think she is.  She still doesn’t want the public’s love and admiration for saving the planet.

All New Ultimates 4 Shadowcat C

The ladies see a police officer arrest a guy.  Dagger feels bad for taking a day off from heroics.

I sort of like how Lana is the team joker, she has a wicked tongue.

Dagger calls Lana, Baumgartner, which I originally thought was a new slang term today’s youth was using.  Turns out, that is just Bombshell’s last name.  Dagger’s name is Tandy Bowen.  Since they are out of costume, I should use their real names.

Kitty mentions, Iceman, which is this title’s first reference to the X-Men.  Do they still exist?  Does Utopia still stands?  Has Colossus stepped down and elections for their next leader happened?

With the announcement that Ultimate FF (Future Foundation) being cancelled with issue six – and this title ending at twelve, who knows if we will get answers to those questions?  Regarding the rumors of this title ending, I am not surprised.  Previous Ultimates runs have ended when the creative team was done.  I am sure they will just relaunch it again with the same cast of characters but with a new creative team.

The ladies take off their sun dresses, except for Tandy – her’s apparently can be swim in.  I like how Jessica is in a one piece swimsuit and Kitty is in a sensible bikini.  Lana’s bikini is the only one that is overly showy, but she strikes me as a lady who is full of confidence.

All New Ultimates 4 swimsuits reveal

Two loser guys show up with lame pick up lines and Lana dismisses them, promptly.

Tandy talks about how it is a shame the boys couldn’t make it to the beach. Which transitions us to those two.

Westside Church.  Cloak teleports two trespassers to the street.  An older guy is tired of heroes being above the law and starts shouting at Cloak.

Spider-Man and his pal, Ganke, are webslinging to a film.  Miles is apparently dating a gal named, Katie.  She knows he is Spider-Man.  He wants to know if he should tell her that the Serpent Skull leader kised him.  Ganke doesn’t believe he should.  It didn’t mean anything.  If it was me, I would have called my wife seconds after it happened.

Spider-Man has to refill his web-shooters.  I don’t quite get what he webbed to the wall.  Is that how his webbing refills?  He surrounds the cartage with webbing and it soaks it up?  So confused by that visual and what is in the middle of the webbing.

All New Ultimates 4 Shadowcat D

Back at the beach, Lana wants to get to know her team a little better.  We get confirmation that Tandy and Ty (Cloak) are officially dating.  They have been through some stuff together.  Lana asks if they do like … like, which I can only guess she is asking if they have had sex.  Tandy answers with a “I wouldn’t know, at least not without powers.”  I echo Lana’s, whuuut.  What does that mean?  That when they combine their powers, that that is like a sexual release?

All New Ultimates 4 Shadowcat E

Kitty sees where this line of questioning is going.  Lana turns her attention to Kitty and asks if she ever got with an X-Man.  As far as I know, she only dated Iceman to disastrous results.  We know she was at least sleeping with Jimmy at Utopia, but not sure if they were sexual.  I doubt it as we never even saw them kiss.  Also, I’m pretty sure Peter Parker died a virgin as Ultimate Spider-Man Annual 3 dealt with him and Mary Jane and the whole ‘sex’ issue.  He told Mary Jane that he and Kitty never did it.

Kitty just tells Lana that it is none of her business.

Lana turns to Jessica next.

Jessica isn’t sure how to answer.  Kitty tells her that Jessica doesn’t have to.  Tandy doesn’t know what the big deal is.  Kitty tells Tandy that they are all not as forth coming as Tandy is.  To which, Tandy starts to call Kitty a b– and Jessica reveals that she is a clone of Peter Parker, Spider-Man.  I love Pinna’s decision to have her roll her eyes so hard.  I would also hate having to explain my origin if I was in her shoes.

We do get treated her a one sentence origin for Jessica – which I’m always a fan of a character having to sum of their origin in as few words as possible.  “I was literally made to be a government super-solider by Doctor Octopus and the government a few years ago.”

Jessica goes into issues with self identity that I have wondered about clones for a while.  It is especially harder for poor Jessica, being the different gender of who she is a clone of.  She has Peter’s memories and feelings in her head.

The main take away from the issue is Jessica revealing that not only she is a clone of Peter Parker but that she is attracted to the ladies.

All New Ultimates 4 Jessica attraction

As I was reading it, I was thinking – good for you Jessica, owning your sexuality!  Then I read her types.

So red head and Jewish gals.  So it is still Peter Parker’s attractions that she now is feeling.  But like she states, if she can’t shake those thoughts then they must be hers.

I do like how none of the gals try to cover themselves up, now that they may have a lesbian amongst them.  That is very mature of them and they handle it as great as one would always hope people will handle such news of coming out.  Those are good friends.

The only time she has had any romantic anything with a boy was Ultimate Comics Spider-Man issue nine when Human Torch forced a kiss on her.  The dirt bag. It was probably the first time she had to even have the thought about him.  Though we are not really shown them kissing, Johnny just tells Peter that it happened.

All New Ultimates 4 Shadowcat F

Lana gets a call from her boyfriend Poey.  He sounds super depress and she leaves the gang to check on him.

We see someone shoot Poey with a gun through a mango.  Which seems more like a movie thing to do than something that a person would in RL.

Next, we get two pages of two panels each (for four panels) of solo Serpent Skull gang members taking out entire groups of competing gangs.  Sidewinder vs. the Zombies in Lower East Side.  Anaconda vs. the Wolfpack in the Bronx.  Black Racer vs. Supreme Soviets in the Meatpacking District.  Death Adder vs. the Nastyboys in Harlem.

I’m glad we only got these pages and not an entire issue committed to these fights.

Lana gets to Poey’s house.  Now that I am looking for it, her skirt is her costume theme, with the black and pink stripes.

The second she finds his body, she gets glitter thrown in her face.  She is frozen in place as the Serpent Skulls unfold their plan to her.

I feel so bad for Bombshell.  Her boyfriend, Poey, is murdered and now she is going to be used by the Serpent Skulls as the tool that destroys the team.

I do like how that female leader of the gang straight up killed that would-be-rapist.  Good for her!  That’s a gang leader, I can get behind!

I was going to post Poey’s chronological appearances, to see how big of a character he was.  Neither comicbookdb or the Marvel Database has pages for the character.  I suppose they never will now.  I just know he was in this issue, the previous issue and apparently in All New Spider-Man 26.

Poor Poey, didn’t have much of an impact.  He was Lana’s boyfriend, so he mattered to her but that’s the extent of it.

Helena, Montana PostNet

Posted by John Klein III on October 7, 2014
Posted in: Uncategorized. Leave a comment

A while ago, I made a reference to my disdain for the PostNet here in Helena, Montana.  I got a few e-mails asking what the situation was.  I’m hoping that whenever someone does a search for “Helena MT PostNet” or of the sort, that this post gets to the first page of that result.

Bob and Sue Brookie are the owners and they are not very good ones, at that.  I worked there for a little over a year and a half.  I was their sole employee after they chased the other employees off.  Which should have been my first sign of the real situation there.  They did have a rotating book keeper as they couldn’t keep one for long.

When we moved here from Yuma, Arizona to Helena, Montana – I could not find work at all.  I eventually had to become a substitute teacher for a short time.  I started applying for retail jobs that paid a decent amount as I wanted to move out of my in-laws as quickly as possible as who wants to live with their in-laws past a few months?

Bob Brookie gave me my final check on New Year’s Eve 2010.  He informed me that I was being laid off due to lack of work.  Which I found surprising as they had offered me medical insurance coverage only a month prior and it was going to kick in around March.

Getting my check after the lunch hour wasn’t unusual, in fact, Sue Brookie had informed me several times that it was her right by Montana Law, that if they wanted to delay giving me my check, they could up to two weeks.  Which should have been another signal that my time there should have been a short one.

This was during the time the economy was horrible and the phase, under-employed, was becoming a buzz word.  Which is the case where you have people who have Bachelor Degrees working in retail positions as their full time jobs.

At this time, I was also working at Hastings part time.  The first hero of the story is Brian who was the store manager at the time.  I had to work my GoShip shift but I wasn’t really there, mentally as it was already hard to get that job and the few interviews I was able to sneak off to, were not promising.  When you are going given thirty minutes for lunch, it really narrows down what you can apply for.

Brian was nice enough to show me how to expand my availability and I essentially was given full time hours and made enough to carry us for a few months.

I was told by friends and family to apply for Unemployment, which I was hesitant to do as I didn’t want to be one of those people.  But putting my family needs first, I started the application.  When I got to the reason for why I was let go, there it was.  “Laid off for lack of work,” which I thought was a sign that Bob Brookie had looked into what I would have to do and gave me the correct response.

I was worried about getting Unemployment as you hear so much about the abuse of it and I didn’t know anything about it.

So I filled out the application and waited.  I’m glad I did as I found out how truly horrible a person Sue Brookie really is.  She purposely delayed the Unemployment process by four months.  These were the longest four months.  I had to be on the phone with Unemployment with what felt like days.  At first, I wasn’t sure what was happening with the delay.  It wasn’t until the first weeks when I found out it was due to a miscommunication between myself and my former employers.  Unemployment told me to be patient, these things happen.

Later, when our second hero of this tale shows up, Benjamin C. Tiller, who started me on my current career path.  He informed me that Unemployment is the easiest thing, as an employer, to just green light.  It is something that all employers have to pay into, so the funds are already there, in case the former employee applies for it.

Which tells me that this was just a delay tactic as the Brookies are dicks.

Sue Brookie informed Unemployment that I wasn’t laid off due to lack of work but because I was a horrible employee.  Which started a sequence of forms having to be filled out.  Her telling her stacks of lies and my telling the absolute truths.  Luckily, Unemployment saw right there it but Sue was able to delay the process by waiting until the very last day to submit her responses.  Unemployment was able to see though lies pretty easily but the entire time I kept telling them to ask Bob for what he told me as that was the reason I was being laid off.

Sue had all of these false claims or blew up petty claims into larger issues.  One falsehood was that she faked evidence that she wrote a Post-It note stating that I was rude to her because she confronted me with my cell phone usage.  The funny thing is that she wrote the note “3 – 2011” when she laid me off on December 31, 2010.  It wasn’t a post-it with “3 – 11” so maybe it was the day of the month but the year.  Of course, her response was filed around March 2011 so clearly she just made up that Post-It right there.  Once I pointed that out to Unemployment my case became that much easier.  Even if it was “3-20-11” that information would still be wrong.

Another thing that made it super easy was that Sue provided my time card for December 2010, showing that I was late a couple times.  Which to that, my response was that there is a train that cuts across North Montana and delays traffic up to several minutes.  I choose not to call as I was only two minutes away.  Also, that it was December and that’s the busiest time of the year for PostNet.  Which is what spurred my typing all of this as I keep seeing their commercials on television, mostly on CBS.

So I couldn’t call them as their phones were already busy and once I did come in, Sue and Bob were both using the two computers which I have to also use to get my time recorded.

Which that was a great day as when they were starting the whole electronic time card, Sue made a very sarcastic remark that I should really enjoy the new process as it will keep track of all of my actual time.  Which I’m not sure why she would say that as it just brings attention to how much time I wasn’t being paid to work.   Which I knew would now be recorded.  I would typically get one to two hours of overtime each week.  Which is a lot of money that I was screwed out of prior to the new format.

So Sue had this timesheet that had the few days I was late, marked in yellow.  So I, naturally, marked in pink, all of the times I was there beyond 6pm. My official time was 9am to 5:30pm, giving me an eight hour work day with a thirty minute lunch.  So I may have been five minutes late (at most) but then I ended up staying thirty to forty minutes each night for several nights.  So not only did I make up the time, I far exceeded the time.

The third thing that really helped my case was that with the forms, Sue would use the small hand writing that looked like chicken scratch and try to get all of her venomous lies into the smallest spaces on the form.  Whereas, I, took the time to just recreate the form and gave myself plenty of lines and spaces and typed the entire responses out.  As my handwriting is horrible but I know how to use a computer.  I could only imagine how the Unemployment office must have felt.  To me, it definitely felt like a college education person having to combat / argue with a high school graduate.  Which, in truth, is what we are.

Bob and Sue’s oldest daughter, who lived in town, was married to Tom who was a high mucky muk with money – compared to the Brookies who may not have had a lot of money – so there was always tension between the two.  Tom informed me once that Sue spent twenty years in her last job with her nose down and just doing what she was told to do with her position at an assembly factory.  So she had no real management experience, which was pretty obvious with how she conducted herself.

Tom and their daughter would thank me for having patience to work with her parents, as the recognized it wasn’t or couldn’t have been easy.  Sometimes, people would make the false assumption that I was their son but I would have to correct them that no one would treat their son like how they did me.

Once I was working at Hastings as my official job, the mail box holders would come in from time to time and tell me how much they miss me over at PostNet.  Which didn’t surprise me as those two would fight in front of customers and it would get extremely awkward.  Plus, would one want to talk with me or deal with one of them?  I imagine that was an easy choice.

The deal with PostNet is that it isn’t the Post Office, a phase I had to use a bunch.  It also isn’t UPS or FedEx.  It is a third party shipper.  The main benefit is that you can come in with a lamp and they will box and package it for you, for up to thirty dollars.  But it isn’t the Post Office so their prices are different on everything.  Which make it super awkward with phone calls and in store customers.  They would know a book of stamps would cost nine dollars but there, it would be ten dollars and 25 cents.  The large flat rate box would cost $16 but there, it would be $24.  People would get so mad about this but they are not the post office.  Usually the prices if you went straight to UPS or FedEx would be often six to ten dollars more.  The problem with FedEx in Helena, is that Ground is only open for thirty minutes (or something like that) and Air pass the airport and people don’t want to make that drive or the directions to it are hard to convey.

Though really, its just going towards Wal-Mart via the back way and just making a left, but I tried to tell someone that once and Sue got mad as that wasn’t how Bob gave the directions.

One time I walked into the store and Bob instantly starting using profanity and yelling at me.  Apparently I had cost them forty dollars due to me telling a customer that I guaranteed an item would get somewhere on a particular day if they used Express Mail.  I never gave guarantees as I followed Sue’s approach of always telling customers that there are no guarantees with weather delays or delays caused by anything else.  The way Bob and Sue were telling me all of this, was clearly how they rehearsed it and I still kick myself for not reporting them to Corporate as they can’t speak to employees like that.

I wish I had knew more about the Wrongful Termination attorneys in town as I would have had an easy case.  My used the Montana Lawyer Referral number and was given three numbers to call, all of them were of no help.  If I had knew, I would have just called the main law offices in town and would have had better luck.

At least I was able to tell those three attorneys about the poor business owners the Brookies are.  I also got to tell everyone I interviewed with the story.  People at the State Departments do not like the Brookies, typically it is Sue when they talk about who they don’t care for.  If they ever wonder why more State agencies don’t use them, that’s why.  Pretty much, anyone who would ask me about PostNet once I was laid off due to lack of work, I would tell them the whole story.  Unless I knew they were just going to tell the Brookies, then I just told me the simple, I was laid off on New Year’s Eve, which is still a crappy thing to do.

So this person comes into the store to get their money back.  Apparently the guy was being pressured to do so by his girlfriend, which I completely get as my wife works me like a puppet from time to time – but that’s the only way to get anything done, sometimes.  The guy’s entire problem was that he shipped it Friday (which I remember) and thought it would get there on Sunday and not Monday.  Which I wonder if that’s how he told the owners that as one would think they would have informed him that nothing gets delivered on Sunday.  I start to explain that Sue got mad as she just wanted me to apologize and not explain myself.

That’s another issue I have with them too.  At one point, in September or October, Sue had a cancer scare and couldn’t be at work for three amazing months.  It may have been August.  Their older daughter came in to help once she was done with her main job.  Things worked at a smooth rate, which must have annoyed Sue when Bob would tell her.  Sue finally came back and it was like she had came back from prison, where she wanted to throw her weight around and prove her dominance at the store.  Which was unnecessary but I wasn’t even given like any sign of appreciation for my extra hours I worked or the Saturdays I came in and worked.  One would think that all of that work would have earned me a raise but instead, I was laid off right after the holidays.

Another instance, a guy dropped off a box with his own label and it had gone out when UPS picked it up.  The next day, the guy came in accusing us of stealing his box as his tracking number didn’t work.  What had happened was that he bought two items, in two different shipments and had used the wrong return label.  I had to make several calls and figure it all out but the guy had instructed us that he was going to the police.  Sue spent most of her time on the phone with an attorney.  She later informed me that if they have to go to court, that I was going to have to pay for half of the costs – which I told her that I’m sure I shouldn’t be held accountable for anything like that.  Even if the guy said that he gave me the box and saw that I put it in the back room for pick up.  Yet another sign of her not knowing how to speak to an employee or how to handle a situation.

Their commercials say that there are no lines there during the holidays but there definitely is, especially around the lunch hours and right after people get off of work.  Or very early in the morning, so essentially, that’s false advertising.  It may be shorter lines than the Post Office but that’s not what they are saying.

Sometimes I get so mad when I think about the year and a half that I wasted there.  Or when I think of the things I should have said or reported that would have made the Unemployment process easier.

I am thankful for Abby, who was the Store Manager of Hastings after Brian, for seeing the leadership skills in me and promoted me from Costumer Service Associate (CSA) to Costumer Team Leader (CTL) as it made the interviews easier and showed growth.  I will be forever thankful to Hastings for being there for me when I needed them to be.  Well, until Abbey left and the revolving door of Store Managers started but that’s another story that I won’t get into as that’s pretty much it.

Another odd thing was that their oldest daughter saw me at Wal-Mart in February after being laid off due to lack of work, and she was super pleasant to me.  Which made me wonder how much she or even Bob knew about what Sue was doing.  I have been lucky enough to not run into them but if I ever did, I wouldn’t fake pleasantries with them.   I imagine they, or at least Sue, would know better than to even approach me.  She knows that she lied, for the most part, to Unemployment, took a gamble that I would find gainful employment in time and the whole matter would be resolved.  Unfortunately, mostly to me, that I didn’t get a proper job until May of that year.

Bob did wave at me once and all I could do is stare at him.  Which reminds me, Sue had this haircut that a slew of older women had so that’s what I see first so there was a period of time (still), where I was shooting old ladies dirty looks.

There was also a day where I recognized Bob’s truck and it seemed like he was following me, trying to figure out where I worked at the time.  That was a little weird but he was probably just looking for any reason to not go back to the store.

Something else that helped me with my case was that for months, they would do these Employee Appreciation lunches that lasted up til the busy time (around November) which always ended with them thanking me.

The final thing that really secured my stance was that they gave me a decent raise and a very good employee evaluation sometime in July.  So any evidence they had prior to July was truly voided as they had their chance to correct any ‘bad behavior’ at that time and didn’t have any to correct.  Except that for a week, once, my shirts were a tad wrinkly.

The entire experience pretty much changed me, I now keep good records of issues I have with employers or other employees, I document anything that I don’t agree with or that seems odd to me.  I’m not afraid to go to Corporate or to a Managing Partner.  I’m never going to have my reputation be tarnished by lesser people ever again.

No End in Sight Part Three of Three

Nova finally gets involved in this three part saga.  He was only on the cover of the Uncanny X-Men Special.  I like how each next part is lead into by the final pages of the issue.  That makes the transition smoother.

Thanks to this great website, we can follow along :

http://viewcomic.com/nova-special-001-2014/

Issue opens with this new Nova, who I only know from the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon and I read how he was apparently a friend of Utau, the Watcher.  As seen in Original Sin 0.

Nova recognizes Cyclops, and sees that Cyclops still has the helmet on, and his hands cuffed.  Could he at least not be on the floor?  I, also, get the impression that Cyclops can’t see anything outside of the green glass.

Monark has knocked Cyclops out.  He didn’t like a clear leader of men, seeing him not knowing what to do.  Never show weakness in front of the hostage!  I’m sure that’s a recognized rule, somewhere.

Molark doesn’t know what to do, he just wants this mess to be over with.  He wants Nova to speak on his behalf to his employer, who is old and rich.

Nova doesn’t know if he should.  He’s only 15 and barely understands Geometry.  Which I totally get as it was my worst Math class in High School, though Mr. Huska tried his best.

Nova will talk to the guy but only talk, there will be no use of force.

Meanwhile, Iron Man (still fighting for page time) is picked up by some actual SWORD agents.  They start giving him a hard time for not recognizing the new mutant students.  Iron Man has decided to quit keeping up on them and their powers a while ago.  He makes the awesome observation that there appears to be a new class of students once a year – which is completely true!

Iron Man’s example of Mondo and Skin being a huge threat tells us that he last paid attention during the Generation X days.

Iron Man wants to track the other SWORD ship with their current ship to find out where the mutants are going.

On the planet Atratus lives on.  He’s the boss that Monark fears.  He has a special lady friend who is buttoning up her shirt.  How does she keep her hair like that?

Atratus is an old man, he has clutches and can barely move around on his own.  He is in that awkward phase of wanting to do everything himself.  It isn’t pretty.

They stop speaking when they hear a ship land, loudly.

Nova Special 1 Magik 1

Magik and her students get out of the ship.  They want Cyclops and Magik look fierce!

Nova Special 1 Magik 2

Atratus’ lady isn’t thrilled with these trespassers.  It is a classic case of assumptions and misunderstandings.

A second ship lands, also loudly.  Nova and Monark come out of the second one.  We get a fun moment of Nova trying to pronounce Atratus.  A-tray-tus?  A-trat-us?  Monark confirms it is, A-trat-us.

Nova Special 1 Magik 3

Goldballs recognizes Nova.  At least, the uniform and helmet.  Nova doesn’t recognize these mutants as X-Men.  Which is awkward as he recognized Cyclops just based on his new uniform, so he should at least know who Magik is.

Nova Special 1 Magik 4

A bunch of people start talking at once.  Atratus wants to speak with Monark, Monark wants to tell him the bad news.  Irma wants to know if Cyclops is here, Nova confirms that he is.  Atratus’ lady (who I wish had a name) wants everyone to stop speaking.  I like how she starts counting to five and people are still talking over each other.  It is a nice two page sequence.

Nova Special 1 Magik 5

Just then, and quieter, Iron Man and SWORD agents come out of a third ship.  I like how the students are now in their proper uniforms and Goldballs is in his awesome superhero uniform.

Nova Special 1 Magik 6

Atratus’ security forces start fighting Iron Man and SWORD agents with Nova and the X-Men in the middle of the battlefield.

Atratus goes inside, Nova and Monark follow him.

Nova Special 1 Magik 7-1

Magik wants to take her X-Men and go find Cyclops.

Nova Special 1 Magik 7

Iron Man stops her and wants to arrest Cyclops.  Which is silly as he was mind controlled by the Phoenix when he killed Xavier, since when does the hero community hold the hero responsible for his actions when that happens?

I love Magik standing up to Iron Man, he’s nothing to her.  Plus, she can totally take him in a fight.

Triage starts losing his mind, which was hinted at in the Iron Man Special.

Nova Special 1 Magik 8

Magik tells Tempus to freeze everyone.  I like how she still gets battle shock, so she needs a leader to remind her of her abilities.  I’m all for Magik being Cyclops’ second in command.  If not Kitty, then Magik is the next best thing!

Magik grabs Triage.  Benjamin, Goldballs and Irma go to Cyclops.  Benjamin unlocks the helmet, that had a simple one button control to it.

Magik and Triage have a nice moment together.  Ever since he saw a picture of Magik and her New Mutants friends, he has been worried.  He doesn’t want to be forgotten one day like those students.  Which is a bad example as besides Magma, everyone else is pretty much accounted for.

Sean Ryan really wants us to think about how many X-Kids get replaced every year with a new batch.  There are at least two years worth of students who are barely seen anymore.  I’m mostly looking at you, Young X-Men.

Nova Special 1 Magik 10

Cyclops thanks Magik, which I’m glad we got to see him do that.  They get in the SWORD ship and take off.  I’m sure they ditch it as it must have tracking systems that are hard to get rid of.  Plus, once they are back on Earth, Magik can teleport them anywhere.

Meanwhile, inside.  Atratus is dead.  Apparently he fell off a ladder.  What was he doing up on a ladder with a giant battle happening outside?

Issue ends on a bit of a low note now.  Monark doesn’t know what to do next.  Nova is overwhelmed with how infinite the universe is.  Plus, he just saw an old man die for no apparent reason.  Nova is pretty shook up.

Issue ends with Iron Man telling Nova to try to enjoy the view.

I wonder if Iron Man, having the X-Men on his mind, and standing next to Nova – remembers that Broo wanted to meet Nova and he told Iron Man that during AvX.

A decent crossover, it didn’t hurt anything and it was enjoyable.

I won’t be buying Iron Man nor Nova (besides issue 18, that has Magik in it) but I don’t think that was the point of the crossover as Sean Ryan doesn’t write either title.

I didn’t vote in this, as I couldn’t think of anything worthy of the list besides First Appearances of Kitty Pryde and Lockheed. What could be eight other events? I just couldn’t wrap my mind around the list. 75 years is such a long time!

I figured the list was going to be the majority first appearances and deaths. Which the list does have those. Then popular runs such as Frank Miller’s Daredevil and Walt Simonson’s Thor, got some love.

The X-Men got a cool 15 slots on the list, that’s pretty decent!

Sins Past has ruined the Death of Gwen Stacy for me. Now it just makes sense. You can’t just cheat on your boyfriend with his best friend’s dad. Become pregnant. Go to Europe, give birth to twins, go back home, continue to date your boyfriend. Deny your babies daddy his right to see his kids. That doesn’t sound like the actions of a good person. That’s why I was always a Mary Jane fan.

Iron Man Special 1

Iron Man Special 1

Writer Sean Ryan

Penciler Rahmat Handoko

Inkers Roberto Poggi, Craig Yeung, Livesay and Norman Lee

Colorist Ruth Redmond

Letterer VC’s Clayton Cowles

No End in Sight Part Two of Three

This is the first ‘solo’ Iron Man that I have read in a while.  I’m sure that last Iron Man run that I collected was the awesome Joe Quesada run, back in 2000.  If you can find a copy of ‘Mask in the Iron Man’ trade, I would highly recommend it!

To be honest, this does feel like the middle chapter as it is a lighter comic.  I did enjoy how funny it is.

Another aspect of the comic that I like is that the writer is not the only talent to unite this three part saga.  Redmond, the colorist, is also involved with all three chapters.  That really adds to the visual continuity of the story, and brings the three different artist teams together.  Should make the eventual trade look good too.

Onto the issue :

The Peak.  Benjamin and Irma are about to leave the base in a SWORD ship, with Iron Man.

Benjamin is surprised that Irma can’t just download another pilot’s abilities.  Instead, she has to continually read their mind and once she is out of range, she will lose the ability to fly the ship.  Which seems to go against how I think telepathy works.  But how much different can flying the X-Jet be from a SWORD ship?

Though she is part of the Cuckoo’s Hive Mind, so her individual powers could be different. What she should do is describe what she is doing to Benjamin, he writes it down, then they will have the directions.

Benjamin says it doesn’t really matter, as Iron Man is most likely going to fly the ship.  He knows where they are going.

Benjamin reveals the plan is to have Irma summon Magik and bring the rest of the team to them.  Which is pretty impressive for both ladies as they will be communicating across a galaxy, which is farther than Magik usually teleports – by a lot!  That’s usually the distance Lila Cheney does (almost exclusively).

Magik, back in the day, if she attempted to teleport across the country – the big concern was that you may end up where you were hoping, but in the wrong year or decade.  Now that she houses Limbo entirely inside her, she has a stronger grasp of her powers.

Irma is not thrilled that she has to do everything.  Benjamin states his role is hard.  He has to use his soothing ability to keep Iron Man from seeing through their disguise.  They are dressed as SWORD agents.

The most difficult part for Benjamin, is looking into Tony Stark’s eyes.  As one can lose themselves in them.

Back at The New Xavier School.  Goldballs and Triage are having a nice chat.  Goldballs tries to reassure him that it is going to go well.  They will have SWORD uniforms.  I suppose Benjamin and Irma knows everyone’s jumpsuit size and had no problem grabbing six uniforms.

Fun exchange with Triage saying they won’t look like SWORD agents.  Goldballs rebuttals with, we don’t look like X-Men.

Iron Man Special 1 Magik

Once again, look how everyone is a different shade on that page.  Redmond is such a good colorist.

I like how Phoebe now has red hair, but keeps the same hairstyle that Celeste has.  Phoebe is different but still wants to show that she is with her.

Magik has to stay hidden so Iron Man doesn’t recognize her.  He would from the whole AvX Phoenix business.

Back on the SWORD ship.  Iron Man wonders if everyone is set.  Benjamin is too excited to be speaking with him again.  Irma and himself are disappointed in him.

Iron Man will fly the ship.  He is going to lead them to Death’s Head, as he was the one who took Cyclops.

Magik teleports the team to the ship.  I guess if Irma and Benjamin were at the Peak Station, then Magik is only teleporting the distance of the moon.  Which is still far, but not a galaxy width like I thought.

Magik brought with her – Triage, Goldballs and Tempus.  The students don’t know how to address Tony.  Iron Man?  Mr. Stark?

He doesn’t mind either, he mostly just wants to know if the agents are getting younger or is he just getting older.

They are going to the planet, Calculex to a club named, Flamer’s.

Once there, Goldballs loves this mission.

In another fun exchange : Triage has never seen anyone use a pumpkin ‘like that’ before.  Irma wants the boys to focus.  Also, that those are not pumpkins.  Irms sure is being given a lot of room to show her personality.

A blue alien recognizes Iron Man.  Of course, Iron Man doesn’t recognize him in return.  Thus begins the big fight sequence.  Also, the main Iron Man sequence.  Thus, I lost a little interest.

The alien has friends who will back him up.  Iron Man assumes the SWORD agents have his back but they can’t reveal their powers in front of him, so they are not much use.

Meanwhile, poor Cyclops.  Has a helmet blocking his powers on his head and his hands are cuffed.  He’s on his back, having to listen to the guy who has him captive whine about his current circumstances.  The guy’s name is, Monark Starstalker.  There are so many space adventurers that there is no way that anyone on Earth would even know more than two of them.  I mean, Cosair and Star Lord are two big names but I bet neither are known on Earth as much as Silver Surfer or anyone who has been a member of the Avengers.

Monark was hoping to bring Havok to his rich old employer has when Havok was leading the Starjammers, they cost his employer a bunch of money.

Cyclops wonders why Monark didn’t just get Havok himself.  He’s an X-Man, he says.  Cyclops corrects him, he’s an Avenger now.  So he’s dead to Scott.  Monark knows that being an Avenger means that Havok was way out of his league.

Apparently, Monark isn’t a brand new character, like I’ve been thinking he was.

http://comicbookdb.com/character_chron.php?ID=4630

He’s been around for years now.  He first appeared in October 1976 but then not again until 2009.  He had a robot bird, Ulysses, who helped him see, hear and feel.  He told that bird to Death’s Head to get Havok and more money.  Now he’s not only a loser but blind.

Cyclops tells him that no matter what is wrong, there is someone out there who can help.  Monark can only think of one person.

Back at Flamer’s.  The huge fight is happening.  Irma is about to be tackled and either Benjamin or Goldballs saves her.  I honestly can’t tell if it is suppose to be a skinny Goldballs or Benjamin.  Before saving her, he says that his power isn’t very subtle.  Which means Goldballs as Benjamin’s power is super subtle – that’s the point.

An alien knocks Triage down and is about to shoot him point blank.  Triage mutters, I knew it.  Just then Tempus shows up and time freezes the foe.   Tempus calls her, Mindee, but I always go with her real name, Irma.  Not sure why I do that.

We get what I can only imagine is the three page mandatory sequence of Iron Man explaining his origin, history and philosophy to the main alien.

I’m sure it was Goldballs who saved her as he has a soulpatch and Benjamin doesn’t.  He’s definitely drawn more ‘bulky’ here than fat.  But when he was at the school, he looked fat so the uniforms must be form fitting.

Goldballs runs into Death’s Head.  For three balls, he is told the location of Cyclops.

A short time later.  The team and Iron Man catch up to Goldballs.  They call him Fabio and by his hero name.  This confuses Iron Man.  They also say Cyclops’ name, so Iron Man knows something is up.  Then Irma summons Magik and we get my favorite page of the issue :

Iron Man Special 1 Magik Stark funny

I love the pacing of that joke.  That’s some fine sequential storytelling!

The final two pages sets up the final chapter.  Monlark goes to Nova’s house.  So they are back on Earth?  Such a waste of space gas.

Nova has to tell Monlark that he isn’t the Nova he knows.  That Nova, Richard Rider, is sadly, dead.  This is the new Nova, who appears on the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.

Monlark starts crying and new Nova, I believe his name is Alex?, asks if he can keep it down and his mother is trying to sleep.

To be continued in Nova Special 1!  Which we will be reviewing next!

In time for Marvel’s 75th anniversary, Joshua Yehl and Jeff Lake made their list of the Top 25 Best Marvel Characters

25. Jessica Jones
24. Blade
23. Ghost Rider
22. Captain Marvel
21. Luke Cage
20. Spider-Woman
19. Silver Surfer
18. Beast
17. Thing
16. Kitty Pryde

9. Professor X
8. Hulk
7. Cyclops
6. Thor
5. Jean Grey

1. Spider-man

As happy as I am that Kitty Pryde made the list, I am confused by those who ranked higher than her.

Dr. Strange and Black Panther, are cool and all but what have they done lately?

Their criteria was :

We looked at Marvel’s entire roster to decide who is the most noble, who has the finest stories of self-sacrifice, and who looks best in spandex. Check out our list, then let us know your favorite Marvel heroes in the comments!

Which is fine and all but most of these characters either have movies or have movies in Production so I’m not sure how, at this time, they rank higher.

Invisible Woman and Daredevil would make more sense once their movie / television series comes out next year.

Jean Grey, the original, is dead and good being there.  Teen Jean isn’t mentioned their write up so its just the concept of the original that is being counted here.

As per usual with these things, it is a popularity contest but at least Kitty made the list and really, that’s what is important.  Sure she’s at 16 but she is Top 16 over thousands of other characters.  Probably just a coincidence that they went from Thing to Kitty, right?  It wasn’t like they had one thought and just followed it with another.  Probably not.

I do like how they went with Robert Atkin’s drawn Kitty Pryde and Lockheed, plus its his own original art not used for any official work.

IGN Top 16 Character Kitty Pryde Atkins

Few young X-characters have been as instantly engaging as Kitty Pryde. A mutant born with the ability to phase through solid objects, Kitty’s rise from student to heroine has been one to watch. She inspires Xavier’s dream in a way few have, both as a proven team member and a gifted teacher, eventually serving as Headmistress for the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning. Her resolve also proves above reproach, once sacrificing herself for the good of the planet by merging her phasing abilities with a giant space bullet, allowing it to pass harmlessly through the Earth. It was a moment of pure, genuine heroism, and from Kitty Pryde we’d expect nothing less.

People need to be constantly reminded that Kitty did save the entire planet, our planet, all by herself and it cost her three years of publication life.  That’s a huge achievement plus sacrifice.

Magik being at the site in Original Sin 2 where the Orb drops the Secret Bomb has paid off again!

Daredevil V4 6 Magik 1 Daredevil V4 6 Magik 2

The secret Daredevil learns?  Is that his beloved father, was pretty abusive to his absentee mother.  Now it makes sense.  One would think that he would remember that but he was just a baby, so that makes sense too.

Daredevil narrates that he was only  in New York because he was finishing up some business before heading back to his second home, San Francisco.

I really like how he rationalizes his lack of involvement in these crossovers, if it involves the Hulk and the Thing – then he really has no business being there.  His radar sense gets all confused and people find out he’s blind – it is a whole thing.

I like how the Previously page is done as if it was the top fold of the New York City Bulletin.  I wonder why it isn’t the Bugle?

Thanks to this page, we (I) learn that Murdock was disbarred for admitting, under oath, that he is Daredevil.  I wonder how he got out of it during Bendis’ run and how he didn’t get out of it this second and latest time.

Now that Matt has been forced to relive this moment (and thanks to his powers, he really got a big dose of the reality) he is seeking more truths regarding his father.  Now, like the Amazing Spider-Man issue, I thought everyone around got everyone’s secrets but that doesn’t seem to be the case.  I guess that’s a good thing.

Matt’s mother became a bride of Christ, or a nun – as they are traditionally called.  I like that they have a cool catchy name.  As a Catholic, I married into it, I like that Daredevil gets to represent the religion.

Matt goes to the church that Sister Maggie (his mother) is a nun at.  The priest and another nun are surprise to see him there.  A nun tells Matt that Maggie isn’t there anymore.  We see that she’s at Ryker’s Island.

Matt has to call in a slew of favors but gets to speak with his mother.  She and two others did break the law but not to the point that everyone says they did.  Herself and Sisters Barbara and Leora – five days ago – found out about a military base with chemical weapons.  They went there and started spray painting the walls with peace signs.

Because it was a military base’s wall (all your bases belong to us), they were marched to a military tribunal and locked up within 24 hours.  The sisters are going to be transported to Wakanda.  Matt is surprised by this, as am I!

Wakanda, there was a moment in time when Black Panther was the Man Without Fear in Hell’s Kitchen.  Not sure how that came about or how that ended but one would imagine Murdock had to give his blessing for that.

Murdock goes to the warden, he has no answers.  The police don’t even know about.  His contacts at SHIELD (glad that was written in) say that they can’t do anything, it is municipal.  Matt doesn’t even know what the official charge is.  Is the Kingpin behind this?  Is that an option?

Daredevil makes his way into that military base, for some answers.  There is no one there.

He calls the Avengers and his informed that T’Challa is no longer King and his sister, Shuri is the new ruler.  (again?)

Daredevil goes to Hawkeye – not in costume and pretty banged up and barbecuing.  He reminds ol’ Hornhead that Wakanda has a Manhattan embassy.

We get an awesome double page spread of Daredevil in a closet, listening to everything in the building.

Finally, he hears something.  An American general is meeting with a lieutenant.  There is an exchange of a flashdrive.  Before the general can grab it, Daredevil does and puts it in the tip of his billy club.  Which I didn’t know it had compartments like that.  Pretty handy!

The lieutenant was expecting Daredevil and has a sonic alarm ready.  If everyone knows who you are, why even wear a superhero costume?  Also, this must have been the plan the entire time.  Or at least, once they figured out who they had in custody.  But I imagine Maggie’s real name wasn’t that easy to Google.  Or is it?

Daredevil has been awake for 36 hours and his foe has been completely prepared so he quickly loses the fight.

The general takes a chair to Daredevil’s back.  E C DUB E C DUB E C DUB

The lieutenant (a rank, I don’t know how to spell on my own and don’t care for typing it everytime) gets his flashdrive back.

They pick up Daredevil’s body.  He mutters that they are Americans and this can’t be done on American soil.  The lieutenant laughs, they were on Wakandan soil.  With that, Daredevil is thrown through a window.

They drop the billy club and keep bragging about their success.  Once they heard Daredevil was asking around, they moved up the time table and the sisters have been sent away an hour ago.  Daredevil never had a chance and now he’s surrounded by trash.

The lieutenant makes a great observation that the general might as well help out as Daredevil is blind and can’t identify him.  Except for his smell and sound of his voice but that’s not really the problem at the moment.

I doubt the next issue has a flashback to Original Sin but I really liked this issue!

Waid and Rodriguez did an amazing job as did the Lopez and Caramagna.

Great job team!
