Part Four of Five

So great to see Bagley drawing Ultimate Kitty again, it has been a while since he drew her when she use to date Peter Parker.

Cataclysm 4 Kitty 1

Cataclysm 4 Kitty 2

The X-men are in New York City.  If you were like me, and complained about how issue three had the X-Men on the cover but not in the issue, this issue makes up for it big time.  I do enjoy that Bendis enjoys Kitty Pryde almost as much as I do.

Cataclysm 4 Kitty 3

There is absolutely no reference to the Cataclysm X-Men miniseries.  James Howlett and Rogue are standing with the rest of the X-Men, as if nothing out of the ordinary happened.  The team is Kitty Pryde, still in that white outfit, Jean Grey, Magma, Iceman, Colossus, Derek Morgan and Storm.

Cataclysm 4 Kitty 4

Kitty wants to do something but she isn’t sure what to do.  Then a helicopter shows up, Captain America needs her, nay, the world needs her.  I like how the X-Men are mad, as Cap completely let them down during Reservation X, not getting involved when the military showed up.

I like how as soon as Kitty gets there, Reed wants her to pee in a cup, get a blood sample and a pap smear.  They have plans on turning her into a giant.  Sue steps in to give Kitty a better experience with a doctor with a good bed side manner.

Tony hugs Kitty, which he also didn’t help the X-Men when the military showed up.

Tony notices that Jean standing around and wants her to use a Cerebro to read Galactus’ mind, to find out if she can find out his weakness.  Which is odd, as shouldn’t that be on the flashdrive that Reed and Miles got from the proper Marvel Universe.

Cataclysm 4 Kitty Plan

They tell Kitty it is a suicide mission and she fully accepts it.  They want her to become a giant, so that she can phase through Galactus’ machinery.  Also, while she is there, she should slap Galactus around.

Jean reads Galactus’ mind.  She reveals his thoughts – he’s hungry, desperate, he knows he is on an Earth but not his, he wonders if he can get back there and he isn’t sure how he got to this universe.

Then he notices that someone is reading his mind and this angers him.  Thor flies out of the base and Galactus starts throwing him around.  Galactus shouts, I hunger!

Captain America jumps into a jet and with Storm, they start attacking Galactus.  They are only merely distracting him so that Kitty can get ready.

Galactus back hands Cap’s jet.  He sets the plane onto a course for Galactus’ head.  We see a panel of him clearly running for an exit.  We then see Cap’s plane crash.  We see that the SHIELD Hellicarrier take some blasts and crashes into the ground.  Issue ends with Galactus shouting, I hunger.  No explanation mark, this time.

I’m pretty sure Cap isn’t dead, like how the cover shows.  Or at least, how people thought it meant.  Sort of like Xavier dying in AvX issue eleven, and how it only looked like was knocked on to his back, it wasn’t until the next issue that it was confirmed.  Actually, it wasn’t until Tom Brevoort did interviews that we learned Xavier was really dead.

Next issue, anyone can be dead.  I’m sure Cap is dead but it looks like he should have made it to safety.  Though, I’m not sure where safety could be in that situation.

. . .

So, it has taken a full month to create a Top Ten list :

1.  All New X-Men 22

2.  Guardians of the Galaxy 11

3.  Cataclysm 4

4.  X-Men Legacy 22

5.  Uncanny X-Men 16

6.  Marvel Knights X-Men 3

7.  Savage Wolverine 13

8.  All New X-Men 21

9.  Wolverine 13

10.  Cataclysm 3

Hastings didn’t get their copy of X-Men Legacy 23 until Friday and come Saturday afternoon, they couldn’t locate their three copies.  I’m hoping when I stop by Tuesday, as from Comiclist.com – I am not slated to be buying any comics shipping this week, they have located my copy of it.

So now that I have my ten.  I’m thinking of only maintaining the list at the end of each month as I don’t see any reason to update it once a week.  That’s what I’m thinking of as of now.

Colorist Glynis Wein

Letterer Tom Orzechowski

Cover Dated April 1983

Look at that cover, that may be my second favorite Kitty Pryde cover.  I mentioned before about that hair of hers and how wavy, I suppose is the word for that.  What would be the real world look of that cover?  I’m not sure I’ve ever seen women with that much body to their hair.  I’m telling you, it is a weird thing to be fixated on, but there is something about that that I want to see depicted in RL.

Uncanny X-Men 168 Kitty Xavier is a Jerk

The issue starts off with what has to be one of the most famous first pages of all comics.  “Professor Xavier is a Jerk!” tell you everything you need to know about both, the young lady and the man in question.  It has to also be one of the all time most famous splash pages too!  Such a great way to start an issue and look at Kitty’s hair there!

Uncanny X-Men 168 Lockheed Wing

Issue opens with Kitty being mad and kicking the snow about.  Illyana is trying her best to be a good friend.  Since the X-Men have come back to Earth, and that Xavier has created the New Mutants group, he wants Kitty to be on the younger junior team.  This of course, angers Kitty as she has proven herself time and time again that she has earned her spot on the X-Men.  Xavier is only looking out for her, wanting her to have interaction with fellow teenagers her own age.

Kitty goes on about how his decision is not fair.  Paul Smith draws Illyana with such a look that when she finally speaks, you can tell that she waited until Kitty repeated it for the ninth time.  Illyana finally tells Kitty that it isn’t as unfair as spending half of your life inside of Limbo and all that comes with Limbo.  This shuts Kitty up and now she realizes that her problems are not real problems.

If Xavier’s school was a real school, or if I was running it, Kitty would be in classes with the New Mutants, and when the X-Men went off on a mission, Kitty would be allowed to go on said mission.  Since the New Mutants are never suppose to go on missions, though those rascals find ways to leave the mansion all of the time, it wouldn’t be a good title if it was only classroom time all the time, this shouldn’t be a problem.  If they did have a mission, Kitty would not go, as she isn’t a New Mutant.  She is dressed as one, but that is another issue.

Kitty and Illyana run off as they don’t want to miss the bus to get to Stevie Hunter’s dance class.

The next page, we see a pair of red eyes belonging to a purple face.  The narration box indicates that he doesn’t care for the weather, or the prey that is around.  This, of course, is Lockheed.  The narration box indicates that his luck is about to change.

We cut to Nightcrawler as he is also watching Kitty and Illyana leave.  Wolverine is telling him about how he is heading north and west, in Canada, he needs a break.  Kurt is quick to state that after their time in space, they all need a vacation.

Logan and Kurt then start talking about how Kitty doesn’t want to be on the New Mutants team.  Kurt takes the stance that maybe she shouldn’t be due to only being a teenager and that she should be not having grand adventures but in school where it is safe.  Logan, on the other hand, believes that she has chosen this life and is ready for the challenges.

I have seen people use this as showing how Wolverine has flip flopped his position on children soldiers, as this is the reason why he took the stance he did during Schism, that is still running strong in today’s X-Titles.  Nowadays, he wants children to be children, but back then, he was all for Kitty being a soldier in Xavier’s army.  I believe it was the fact that Oya had to kill people that he took offense too, had to kill people as Cyclops told her to do whatever it was that was necessary to protect her and her fellow students.  Plus, it has been decades since this conversation, or at the very least, one decade with Marvel’s sliding time scale.

I like how Wein’s coloring here makes Kurt look soft, they are home so they don’t need to be colored dramatically.  Kurt is in a sweater, and Logan is dressed for a weekend in the Canadian wilderness.  They are two bros, broing it up.  And talking about the virtues of children soldiers, who hasn’t had that conversation with a bro?

We change scenes to Xavier and Lilandra.  I like that Lilandra has taken a slight vacation from her duties of Shi’Ar Empress, or at least Empress in Exile, she isn’t trying to head back to her homeworld and take her throne back, she is being a supportive girlfriend.  I imagine, in her mind, that she is only taking a month off, and will head back once her beloved is back on his feet.  Since Xavier’s old body was destroyed due to the Brood hatchling last issue, he was given a new body with working feet.  Unfortunately, his super powerful mind is still set on the fact that his legs are crippled.  Xavier is trying his best to make his brain realize that his legs do work but it is coming at a large price.  He is sweating and stressing out.  You can tell by Smith’s line work that Xavier’s body is fighting every inch.  Or is Wiacek responsible for those convolutions?

Xavier collapses to the ground, exhausted.  Lilandra runs out from the Danger Room control room, as they were in the Danger Room, as that is where the gymnasium is.  She is wearing this blue jumpsuit.  I also imagine, for her, that it was an outfit that was around and she put on.  She is comfortable with her position and does look good in a blue jumpsuit.  Not everyone does.

The two start talking about the future.  He wants her to stay with him, as new mutants are appearing more regularly and he is the only one who can guide them.  She wants him to come with her, as she has an entire planetary empire to run.

That page ends with a panel of Lockheed, still not amused.

We see the dance class, I really like how Smith draws the ladies here.  Three different women, three body types and ages, all dressed correctly for the situation.  Stevie tells Kitty that she needs to fight for what she wants.

Storm tries to get back in touch with nature.  She was away from Earth too long, and is rejected.

Uncanny X-Men 168 Kitty smooth

Probably one of the page pages ever, Kitty trying the four ways to convince a man to listen to reason – Logic, Passion, Co-Operation and Flattery.  Kitty beats Xavier at chess, talks sternly with him, shows she can phase objects and tells him about how she tells everyone that her professor is handsome, nice and wonderful.  Love the fashion choices Smith has Kitty use.  She may not be good at costume design but she can pick out an outfit.

Is this the first time Kitty is shown phasing something?

Scott is shown catching up with Lee Forrester – who is growing her hair long.  Almost too long.  He tells her he is about to go to Alaska with his dad to meet his grandparents for the first time.

Kurt surprises Amanda in a cute scene.  I guess this should count as a Christmas issue, as people keep referencing the holiday.

Kitty is studying, when the Rasputins knock on her window.  I like how it is shown that Kitty phases through the wall instead of opening the window.

Before she can head out, she notes an intruder in the basement.  She dons her uniform, noting that it use to be her special outfit but now it is the New Mutants outfit.

Xavier is going to monitor Kitty as she checks out the basement.  She notices that wires have been chewed.  She is startled by a light.

Uncanny X-Men 168 Attacked

Don’t worry, it is Lockheed!  She picks him up, so happy to see him.  We get the first time he is wrapped around her neck.

Then Sidrain Hunters attack them.  She takes a blast, knocking out her powers.  She does this awesome kick, this whole sequence is very well choreographed.

Uncanny X-Men 168 Shadow and Flame in Action

Lockheed helps out, his flame hurts the hunter.  She takes it out, only to get blasted a second time.  She calls him Dragon in battle, but then thinks of him as Lockheed.  Xavier wonders who she is referring too.

Uncanny X-Men 168 Fight

Before Kitty can get hit a third time, Colossus steps in and defeats the adult hunters.  Kitty notices Lockheed is missing.

Uncanny X-Men 168 Lockheed Hungry

Turns out the little guy found the nest and ate all of future threats.

Xavier reveals he can’t read Lockheed’s mind.  Also, that Kitty will stay as an X-Man, she is on probation.

Issue ends in Alaska with Scott meeting Madelyne Pryor – in her first appearance!

There is a bonus oage of horrible and unused costume designs for Kitty.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Three Issue 11

Trial of Jean Grey Part Two (or is it Part One Version 1?)

I like how this is part of the trial and we are not hung up with whatever has gone on for the last ten issues of these series.  There are references to Infinity but that’s about it.

I really like the location narration boxes, they are pretty fun.  “The Milky War Galaxy.  Still in One Piece.  Against all odds.”

“Knowhere.  A port of call near the end of the universe.  It’s a real place”  is it suppose to be pronounce “Nowhere” because it could also be “Now Here” which could also work.

Star-Lord is getting his drink on.  Gamora shows up and poisons his drink, turns out this is really a Skrull bounty hunter.  Star-Lord’s father is concentrating on locating Thanos, instead of his son.  To counter this, he has sent bounty hunters out to get him.

We see a council of kings, most likely fallout from Annihilation or War of Kings.  Those in attendance are – King J-Son, Kallark (the Shi’ar Gladiator), Supreme Intelligence, and four other people who are not named.  Guardian wants to find the past Jean and bring her in for trial for the sins of the Phoenix.  Which is odd, and the point I don’t get about this storyline, this is a Jean who has never gotten involved with the Phoenix.  I’m pretty sure Jean Grey has already paid the price of the crimes of Dark Phoenix.

The council makes these same points and Gladiator doesn’t really make a proper defense.  I like how the council stops that conversation to ask why the X-Men brought the Original Five into the present.  Supreme Intelligence makes a joke that one reason might be due to nostalgia.  This would be a cruel jab at the X-Titles but Bendis writes those, so it is sort of okay.  They also talk about how of the space-time continuum tremor.  I also like using the term tremor to describe the time breaking.  Time breaking, isn’t a great term.  Tremor sounds official.

Gladiator clearly has other motivations, but what could they be?

“The Guardians’ Ship.  Cloaked from Interstellar Radar.  So Sshhh!!”  fun stuff.   Tony Stark is under the impression that he is leaving a recorded goodbye and resignation from this team.  Turns out, he isn’t leaving a recording, the team can watch and hear him.  Rocket Raccoon really steals the scene and the rest of the issue.  I love that guy!  Groot is there with his classic, and only line, I am Groot.  They have to keep that in the movie, right?

Tony references Fedex and I like how Rocket doesn’t know what that is and says so.  Why do aliens always have to know our customs?  Rocket uses the term, Gronad, and doesn’t explain it outside of the context.  Really smart writing.

Gamora and Angela are shopping.  Not sure how anyone takes Angela serious in that outfit.  Which is pretty much a very large belt over a pair of panties and a slim bra.  They see the Skrull Gamora and Star-Lord, great reactions of the two Gamoras.  The real Gamora tries to question the skrull, and Angela straight up chops her head off with her gigantic sword.

Angela explains her motives, as every question Gamora would have asked, Angela already has the answer to.

“Seventeen Flonax Later.  Okay, about one week.”  The team is reunited.  Rocket has planted a signal to record conversations, that is registered to notify him whenever Earth is mentioned.  Rocket uses the term, Flarnak, and once again, only context and it makes perfect sense.  Star-Lord was on the planet Badoon, which sounds silly.

Whenever Rocket Raccoon talks, his word balloons are not perfect circles.  I wonder what the reason is that, I like how it means you don’t have to see him in every panel, you clearly know who is talking.

The recording they overhear is the plan to come to Earth and capture Jean Grey for a Shi’ar trial.  The Guardians sole mission is to protect Earth from alien threats.  I like how Angela, who is from the Spawn portion of Image comics, has to have all of this Marvel stuff explained to her, which really works for new readers.

Rocket states, that the Badoon are dumb Zarnooks.  The fun thing is that you could place your own meaning on the words.  Sort of like whenever you see $%#@ for profanity, clearly one works best but other words work too.

All New X-Men 22 –

All New X-Men 22 Last Page Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy 11 –

Guardians of the Galaxy V3 11 Final Page Kitty Pryde

The Guardians make it to Earth and the last page of the issue is the reverse of All New X-Men 22, so these two issues match up time wise, which is what confuses me as the cover to this issue states part one.  One should be 1.1 and the other 1.2 or something, 1.a and 1.b, there has to be a term for it.

I like seeing Pichelli’s version of Iceman, X23, Angel, Beast and Kitty.  Kitty is crying and Beast is a giant standing next to her.  Still feel bad that poor Hank doesn’t have any boots and has to stand in the snow of Northern Canada.  I also like how Pichelli inks and colors her own art, everything looks very unison.  Or at least, that’s the impression I have, as I know she is doing it all herself.

I didn’t realize this was going to be a six part crossover.  For whatever reason, I thought it was going to be only four parts.  Each title will carry three portions of it.

. . .

Groundhog Day – More Winter!

Also, Super Bowl Sunday – Go Broncos!

Writer Chris Claremont

Penciler Paul Smith

Inker Bob Wiaceck

Colorist Glynis Wein

Letterer Tom Orzechowski

Cover Dated February 1983

Look at those names above, all legends!

Now, I have reread Paul Smith’s run a bunch of times, either in trade form with From the Ashes, of which this issue is not included and several more times in Essential X-Men Volume 4.  But I was still a bit hestitant to read the actual comic.  I’ve been so used to it in black and white, or too much time has passed, I thought maybe it would not hold up as well.  Or that I’ve been Mr. Paul Smith fan for so long, what if I am blind to the imperfections.

Of course, I shouldn’t have doubted it at all, as this issue is outstanding and double sized!

Issue opens with a landscape of Madrizar, and it is breath taking.  Smith knows he has twice the amount of space, so he really goes all out with the establishing shots and his attention to detail is right there.  One of the reasons, from what I have read, that he didn’t stay on the title long was due to how long it took him to do every issue as each panel is packed.

Carol Danvers, now in her Binary phase, is busting the place up.  Defeating and not caring at all for the Brood world.  She rescues an Acanti, but it informs her that she is dying due to a Brood slaver virus.  Carol agrees to take it out of its misery.  That’s one more death that she will avenge.

Carol sees Storm floating about in space, as her body died last issue.  Storm tells Carol to join them in ‘our’ body, as Storm has merged with this baby Acanti.  .  Carol enters this baby Acanti’s mouth and is reunited with the X-Men.  There is this incredible panel where you see the entire cast, including Lilandra, that should be used as the go to reference for sizes and height for the X-Men.  Colossus is giant, Wolverine is barely as tall as Kitty is.  I like they are not on a stealth mission or anything, so Wolverine is maskless, Kitty is wearing comfortable clothes as is Colossus.  Storm is in her classic suit of the time, but in astral form as her body heals.

The X-Men start joking around with Carol and Kitty can’t stand it.  Cyclops, Colossus, Nightcrawler and her are all technically dying as they still have a Broodling growing in their stomachs.

Storm continues explaining the repercussions of the failed transfer of memories.  The Acanti she is merged with, is the next prophet-singer for the race.  Its parent is what is being used as Sleazeworld’s capital city.  The only way to set right with what once went wrong, is to go to the base of the skeleton and unleash the memories.  Instead of killing the Queen Brood, she wants to make their final mission, if that is what it is, to be one of life.  Wolverine wants to take the fight to the Brood and kill the queen.  Wolverine has been done there once already and the creatures are deadly, and there is one that even the Brood fear.

We get this awesome intense scene with Cyclops making a plan of action, as he wants to take the infected X-Men to the base and free the spirit but Wolverine objects.  He doesn’t want to trust the success of the plan to those who might turn into Broods at any moment.  Cyclops yells at Wolverine to just kill them now then, and take them out of their misery.  This is the moment that Wolverine has been dreading.  He made a deal with himself that he would gladly kill them to prevent super Broods from being made, but now that they are standing in front of him, he can’t do it as they are still in control of their minds and bodies, plus they are his friends.  He makes up his mind and pops his claws.  Kitty dashes between the two of them and tells them to stop.  It is intense.  Raw emotions and their lives are literally on the line.

The X-Men gear up, in their proper costumes and prepare themselves for the mission at hand.  In a very kinetic panel, where you see everyone heading to the transporter.  How everyone is paced, you can clearly read the direction and momentum everyone has.  Cyclops gets into it a bit with Lilandra, wanting to make sure they are about to go right where they want to go.  Kitty stands up for Lilandra, stating she is a queen and should be treated as such.  Lilandra speaks up for herself, she has set the correct place for them.  Kitty makes an awesome “Beam us down, Scottie” joke and Cyclops says, “sorry, did you say something Kitty” and she does this little laugh.  Claremont really has this comic running the gauntlet of high stakes but good humor and seriousness throughout the issue.

We cut to the Brood, and Smith draws them in a way that is creepy.  Or they are merely standing about, but they are creepy looking things.  Reminds me of X-Men Legends II when you have to fight them for a bit and they just rush you in droves and they are easy enough to kill but the way they attack.  Creepy.  We learn that one of the X-Men is in telepathic communication with the Brood and is now a double agent, as their transformation is underway.  One of the Brood soldiers wants to kill the X-Men but the Queen denies the request, as she is expecting five superbabies any minute.

The X-Men teleport to the surface, and Wolverine reveals he has the sent of the soul.  He has a thought of how Storm and Binary are doing and we get a page of Binary out right killing Broods.  Storm is shock about how killing comes so easy to Carol and Wolverine, as they were soldiers.  We are getting the building blocks to Storm’s change of personality.  We cut back to the X-Men fighting the Brood.  Cyclops is barking attitude at Wolverine, and poor Wolverine has to take note about how Cyclops is becoming the aggressor and Wolverine is having to be the leader.  Also, how Cyclops and Wolverine seem to be bickering with each other, just like the ol’ days.

Kitty gets attack by a giant orange amoeba.  It is unsettling.  She uses her phasing power to go through a wall.  Unfortunately the others don’t notice and keep up their attack.  She notices she has landed in a giant nest.  In that nest are Brood skeletons that have been picked clean, and recently.  In the very last corner, we get a tiny glimpse of a little purple creature, whose interest has been piqued.  This is happening.

Carol and Storm are still on the attack, but Carol is getting overwhelmed.  Then the Starjammers show up!

Wolverine throws out a comment about not seeing Kitty in a while.  Cyclops is quick to state that she knew the stakes when they started this mission.  Pretty cold, Cyclops!

Wolverine finally gets close enough to Scott to note something different.  In an amazing sequence, we get Wolverine jumping at Scott, Scott backing up in surprised and Wolverine ripping off his visor.  To reveal the grossest thing to happen to Scott, he is part Brood now!  He has these giant non-blinking Brood eyes!  It is unpleasant!  Now that he isn’t held back by the visor, he displays great skill in his optic blasts and is able to shoot both Wolverine and Colossus, even though they are on opposite sides of the room.  Scott couldn’t accomplish this on his best day.  Next the Queen and the cavalry, this new squad takes out Kurt and Lilandra and with that, the X-Men have been captured.

Meanwhile, Kitty has been doing her best to outrun her own squad of Brood.  She decides if she can’t run, she will phase to the floor below.  She makes a dive for it and hands on her face, she is too exhausted to even use her power!

Uncanny X-Men 166 Lockheed eye

Uncanny X-Men 166 Lockheed ahem-1

The Brood close in, and with an ‘ahem’ we see what it looks like for the Brood to look scared.  And it is satisfying.  We turn the page and there … he … is!

History is made :

Uncanny X-Men 166 Lockheed first appearance

With a giant burst of flame, the Brood are dead and we see the cutest purple dragon shaped alien!

Uncanny X-Men 166 Lockheed full

Paul Smith gives us Lockheed, though not named yet.  Kitty is shocked and not sure if she is next.  One Brood soldier is left, he blasts at them, they dodge and the blast hits a wall, completely destroying it.  Behind that wall is a glowing chamber that mesmerizes both Kitty and the Brood.  Kitty hears lovely music, while the soldier is terrified.  Both are still walking toward the light.  Not sure what happens to Lockheed at this point, as he is not tempted by the light.

Back with the X-Men and the Brood Queen.  Cyclops loses control of his optic blasts and knocks the Queen out.  Wolverine tricks Cyclops to shoot at him, using the blast to bust up the shackles he was in.  In an fantastic panel that I keep having to look at, Wolverine puts one of his knuckles on the Queen’s head and the other over Cyclops, threatening the other Brood to stand down or he will pop his claws killing both.  Also, when Wolverine took the blast, he lost a bunch of his costume.  Smith gives us a closer view of one of the panels and if Wolverine did pop his claw, he would have a pair of brains at the end of his arms.

The X-Men start back on their original mission.  They come across a glowing chamber.  Kitty walks out, now without her mask on.  Which I didn’t care for that mask, it had a giant yellow X on a otherwise black mask.  Seems like a perfect place to set aim too.  This is the Kitty Pryde that Paul Smith draws as great as he does.  I also like the flow of her hair, which I know is a weird thing to comment on but there is just a curviness to it that I’ve been attracted too.  Not attracted like Colossus, but there is a life there to it.  That girl uses shampoo or something!  I’ve tried to see what the real world example of that hair style is, but can’t seem to find a picture.  When I do Uncanny X-Men 168, you will see what I mean.

Anyways, Kitty comes out of the chamber, she notes that the Brood soldier that went in with her has turned into crystal.  Colossus rushes over to her and picks her up, happy to see her alive.  She asks them if they have seen a purple dragon, and they state that they haven’t.

Everyone steps into the chamber.  The Queen is first to start corrupting the soul, then the infected X-Men start infecting it.  Wolverine prepares to kill his friends, but first, the Queen stabs him in the back and he cuts off her fangs.  Now he is too weak to move.  Luckily, Binary shows up and moves him.  She comes back, braces herself and releases the soul.  Once the soul and baby Acanti are united, everything is set right.  The X-Men are healed and the Queen is turned to crystal, but not before revealing that these is still one more infected X-Man out there.

Carol’s face is shown, she spent more of her cosmic power than she thought.  She flirts with Wolverine a bit before the planet starts to quake.  Carol tells the Starjammers to teleport them to their ship.  Kitty wonders about ‘her’ dragon.

They are successfully teleported as the planet is destroyed.  We see some Brood ships escaping, but their thorneworld is no more.

During this time, Sikorsky is telling Wolverine to rest.  Kitty tells him that when she is sick, she has to do things she doesn’t want to do.  Hepizbah gets everyone’s attention as she introduces a fully healed Storm.  All is right again.

Except, Wolverine reminds everyone of what the Queen’s final warning was, and he knows exactly who it has to be … Professor Xavier!

I like how this issue was double sized, but besides the first and last few pages, there were no ads.

Cover Dated September 2001

Look at that great cover by Jill Thompson!  She draws a fun Kitty and Lockheed!

Kitty nor Lockheed appear in the Dazzler story but at least they got on the cover.  And as we all know here at S&FwM, that’s all it takes for make this guy buy your comic.

No, the real gem is the pin up by Bill Sienkiewicz of Magik!

SCAN0002

Besides co-creator Bob Layton himself, Sienkiewicz is the other New Mutants legendary artist.

. . .

Now I never made it official or anything, but today is my birthday and I thought it would be fun to do all of the 32nd issues that I have of various series in my collection.  Thanks everyone for being such good sports!  I thought it would be fun to just do it and see what the reaction will be.

Tomorrow begins Lockheed month!  And to my surprised, and I really should have thought about this ahead of time, the first several Lockheed posts will also be drawn by Paul Smith!  That’s two things!  So excited!

I am missing then :

9, 10, 11, 12 – all were a concentration camp storyline, not having Kitty but Storm and Colossus – I believe I will pass, thank you.

28 I was suppose to get.

On my Wishlist :

Only 5 Issues!

1 Bagley Variant Cover

1 Paco Medina Variant

13 Jorge Molina Variant

28 Regular issue

29 Pagulayan Variant

Nick Spencer started the run out with some amazing concepts and  rich characterization.

Brian Wood took over at the halfway mark and made the title into more of a political comic.

Both of them made and continually made Kitty Pryde the leader of mutants and she really became the face of the franchise.

Both had amazing work done on the title.

Such storylines were :

Divided We Fall

United We Stand

Reservation X

Natural Resources

World War X

With this final part over, anything can happen to the Ultimate X-Men as Galataus is next!

I did not realize that we had such a committed cast of artists on the title :

Paco Medina, Carlo Berberi, Reilly Brown, Mahmud Asrar and Alvero Martinez.

The cast was pretty much Kitty Pryde, Iceman, Rogue and Wolverine’s son, Jim Hudson.  Johnny Storm started out in the night under Nick Spencer and then he stayed behind in New York as Kitty and the gang took to Texas to fight the Sentinels.

This version of the X-Men is the second title in the Ultimate Universe, once Ultimatum happen and made mutants truly the outlaws and feared and hated more than their proper Marvel counterparts have ever felt.

It was like Operation Zero Tolerance, except for two years.  It was like Decimation but on a global scale.  Instead of 200 mutants, we only had 20 left in America.

Not too many stories that were basically “Let’s Introduce this character” type of stories.  They had established these characters and were now able to start telling proper stories.

Ultimate Rogue came off very well.  As did Kitty, they were no longer boy crazy young girls but had become women in their own right.

This title was pretty female dominant, which I didn’t realize until right now.

If Kitty wasn’t fighting a faceless government, she was being threatened by Mach Two or Jean Grey.

Iceman sort of disappeared and Jim Hudson was pretty much just Kitty’s boyfriend more than he was Wolverine’s son, except for that Ultimate Wolverine mini.

Nick Spencer started out with Kitty telling the story (from a future point) stating she was American’s number one terrorist.  I can see where that idea sort of drop but in the age we live in, I can see the news outlets continuing to warm people of Utopia in New Mexico.

Such a great series, push come to shove, I would say that it was the better of the two Ultimate X-Men volumes.  It helps that it had two creative voices guiding the ship and I’ not sure what happen to Nick Spencer but Brian Wood has proven to be quite the talent at Marvel and with the proper X-Men.

Haunted Part Three of Five

This issue reads like an old school issue of Claremont’s.  By that, I mean, there is at least 100 words per page, or at least, that is how it feels at times.  Which is nice, that it took me a minutes to read and then I reread it a couple of times.  This issue feels like the middle of the story, where we resolve what came before and build to where we are going to end.  Which makes sense that it is the third part of five.

We find the Sheriff at the Cooks’ Compound.  We get a glimpse of who these people are, imagine super creepy hippies, who are using mutants to make their drugs.

Meanwhile, back in town, the giant Sentinels are attacking the section of town where Kitty, Rogue and Wolverine are at.  Darla is freaking out, as her powers have never been shown at this level.  Wolverine is slowly losing his mind.  We get the impression that Krystal may be playing a bigger role in the madness.

Wolverine keeps getting haunted by the green mutant who took a bullet to the eye.  Rogue mentions later that these are no longer Darla’s memories but now Wolverine’s memories of her memories.  Which I sort of dig this take on Darla’s powers.  So now that it is Wolverine’s memories, that means these new memories that are being acted out, are now informed by his impressions.  Darla is a very interesting character with a power that still has me thinking about it.

Wolverine charges at Darla, as he knows that the Sentinels are only attacking due to the X-Men’s memories of Sentinels.  Rogue throws a Sentinel head at him, to stop him.

Kitty takes Krystal away from the epicenter.

My one problem with this issue, is that one of the charms of last issue was the villains were from X-Men lore.  This issue, it seems we are given generic demons and cyborgs.  I imagine that Revel got all of the characters he wanted to draw out of his system, and now he is telling the story that he wants to.

Darla takes off, and Wolverine chases her.

Mr. Cook explains the mutant killing / making drugs out of them enterprise.

Wolverine catches up to Darla.  She sends all of these cyborg soldiers after him.  That is an interesting use of her powers, she can take villains from your memory, then control them to attack you.  Though now that I write that, if she pulls villains from your memory, then are they not attacking you only because that is what they originally did?  Am I the only one thinking about Darla?  Besides Revel, I mean.

Kitty begins to encounter the Juggernaut.  I may have been to quick to state Revel was done drawing known characters.  I really like his take on Juggernaut.  Also, call back to X3.

Kitty and Krystal begin being chased by the motorcycle gang from the first issue.  Krystal starts being haunted by visions of her uncle, the sheriff.

Cook has injected so much mutant DNA that he has grown a third eye on his forehead.  The third eye gives him future vision.  Also, he straight up shoots Sheriff Jasper at close range.

Rogue finally meets up with Darla.  Poor Darla has been cutting herself to try to shut down her powers.  Rogue tries to comfort Darla.  Wolverine slashes Rogue’s back with his claws.  I don’t see blood, but still, that has to hurt.

Wolverine notices that Rogue and Darla have things in common.  Both ladies are bad seeds.  Then Wolverine starts to really get out of hand.  He starts calling Rogue a thief and a villain.  Even her powers make her a literal theif, her original power.  Her super strength comes from her villain era, when she stole Carol Danvers’ powers.  Wolverine is the worst, and poor Rogue’s feelings are hurt.

Remembering her villain era, we see Mystique, Destiny, Pyro and Blob.  Blob is behind Wolverine, and forces his face into the wall. There is a great exchange of Wolverine stating the writing is on the wall, with Rogue cleverly retorts that it isn’t writing but his own blood.  I like Rogue in this mini thus far.

We haven’t gotten a Rogue and Wolverine fight since X-Men 103, when they fought for leadership.  It was friendly and Wolverine also didn’t want it.  It was nowhere as good as the Storm and Cyclops duel in Uncanny X-Men 201.

Issue ends with Kitty and Krystal in a car.  The memory of the sheriff grabs Kitty, she remembers she can phase and does so.  She passes out, as the biker gang surrounds Kitty.

What will happen!?!

. . .

My new Top Ten is for 2014 is :

1.  All New X-Men 22

2.  X-Men Legacy 22

3.  Uncanny X-Men 16

4.  Marvel Knights X-Men 3

5.  Savage Wolverine 13

6.  All New X-Men 21

7.  Wolverine 13

8.  Cataclysm 3

Two more to have a full list!  Slated to get Cataclysm 4 and Guardians of the Galaxy 11, Uncanny Avengers 16 (if Magik or Kitty show up) same as X-Men Legacy 23, if Magik shows up.

Empire’s 25 X-Men : Days of Future Past Covers

I wish the Kitty cover was better.  I wish she had a more distinguish look.  Instead it looks like something Ellen Page was already wearing and production didn’t want to bother with a new outfit.

Jennifer Lawrence looks great as Mystique.

I really like Fassbender in the proper Magneto uniform.

How amazing do the Sentinels look?

Poor Anna Paquin, she is in the same pose so many bad cheesecake comic artists place comic book ladies in.  Not flattering in either medium.

I also feel bad about Paquin being cut out of the movie, yet is part of the marketing materials.  Hopefully, Singer puts her back into the film.

My wife pointed out that the cover logos are either in blue and purple.  Took me a few seconds to figure out the significance but blue is the past and purple is the future / present.  Nice touch.

. . .

Update May 4, 2014 :

Empire posted 25 ‘new’ posters on their website, but really, they are the same but with a different background and no logos.

10289818_669139169790083_7472492112904965734_n

So, it is cool but not worthy of a new post.

The Trial of Jean Grey Part One

All New X-Men 22 Kitty Pryde

Issue opens with a quick glimpse of what some members of the title are doing.  X23 is in the Danger Room, and Kitty is watching her.  Beast is in the Laboratory.  Not sure if anything on the chalk board makes any sense but there are some nice references.  M-Day, Cyclops being merged with Apocalypse, Mister Sinister, Utopia, Hope, Professor X dies and Iceman in the back yard.  Bobby is singing Run DMC’s It’s Tricky, as he makes snow angels.

Thanks to YouTuber RUNDMCVEVO for hosting the video.

The real treat of the issue is the scene with Angel, Scott and Jean.  Angel is about to eat a burger.  Scott sits down next to him, he has a sensible sandwich.  Then Jean sits down with a salad.  Warren is about to take a bite of his burger when Jean loses it.

Apparently Scott was having a thought and Jean, once again, wants to talk about it as she isn’t respecting other people’s privacy.  This issue takes place the very next day after the Purficers issue.

Scott wants to talk about Jean and how she knows everything that happens to her and the Original Five.  She knows she is going to die, twice and she witness her own future self die in front of her during Battle of the Atom.  Scott calls her a friend, later he will say she is his best friend.  Jean is dealing with all of this knowledge, by herself.  She doesn’t want to talk about it.  Poor Angel has to sit there between the two of them.  He is wise to not speak up at all.

Scott was going to ask a question about his future but changes his mind.  He only wants to know that she is okay and she can talk to him whenever.

Jean makes this awesome reference to how Scott marries Jean but still ends up with “Silver Boobs McGee” which has to be a reference to Emma.  That should add some tension as now Jean and Emma live in the giant Weapon X facility.

Jean states she is dealing with it and walks away.  Scott isn’t hungry anymore and also walks away.

Warren talks aloud about how uncomfortable it is, and how Bobby would have loved it.

I still do not care for how the new uniforms for the Original Five have those floating belt buckles.  I think it might have to do with how they clearly have a belt like design around their waist, but then it stops at the white portion of their uniform and then it disappears.  Leaving the buckle to float there.

Meanwhile, outside Bobby is still singing It’s Tricky, when he notices four lights.

A red alarm goes off inside the facility.

Bobby tries to create an ice barrier but the Shi’ar soldiers destroy it.  I like how we don’t get the Shi’ar language translated, we don’t need it, it makes perfect sense what is being said.

All New X-Men 22 Kitty attacking ShiAr

Scott is leading the rest of the team outside.  Kitty states that the aliens are Shi’ar, as she jumps at one of them.  She phases her hand through one of their guns, thinking it should short it out.  Instead, she gets electro-shocked for it.  Jean states that is not suppose to happen, she is the genius of the group.  I like how Scott shouts “Professor!” as that is what she is to him,

There is a moment when Hank, which I really like, comments that these are real aliens.  To me, as a long time fan, the concept of aliens in the Marvel Universe, is no big deal but Hank has only been around for eight issues of Uncanny X-Men and then these issues of All New X-Men.  He doesn’t know that aliens are a common occurrence.  Scott states that he isn’t as impress as Hank would want him to be.

X23 gets flung back, Warren catches her, asking her to watch the claws.  Which is smart, they haven’t fought together so he doesn’t know how to look out for them.

Jean gets placed in an energy bubble.  Then the Shi’ar places the rest of the team into individuals bubbles.  Bobby breaks out of his, and tries to rescue Jean.  It is an effort but he gets placed into another energy bubble.

All New X-Men 22 Kitty Jean Gone

With that, Jean is taken into their ship and they take off.  The team has nothing to do but look up in the sky as Jean is gone.

Kitty explains to Hank who the Shi’ar are, and how they are allies of theirs.  We see five more lights.  We get a double page spread of, the Guardians of the Galaxy.

All New X-Men 22 Last Page Guardians of the Galaxy

I am not that familiar with this team, though they have been around for a couple years and will be the stars of their own movie in August.  I know Angela and I really like Groot (who can only say his name) and Rocket Raccoon.

Should be getting the second part and I feel we are off to a good start.

This is what the Guardians see (from Guardians of the Galaxy V3 11)

Guardians of the Galaxy V3 11 Final Page Kitty Pryde

X-Factor (1986) #10

I own all of these except for Care Bears 7, Masters of the Universe 4 and Muppet Babies 10.

Whenever I buy back issues online, those three are nearly impossible to find!  One of these days!

The fun thing with these, is when I’m going through my short boxes, I have to take a pause and wonder why that issue is there.

All because Kitty was part of the border.  Some great comics and some dated comics.

These were all published cover date  November 1986.

Look at that border, I own all but three of these.

Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain Marvel (Monica), Dr. Strange, Namor, Captain America, Wasp, Ant Man, Puck, Shadowcat, Rogue, Wolverine, Colossus, Storm, Rachel Summers, Nightcrawler, Iceman, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Angel, Beast, Daredevil, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Hawkeye, Luke Cage, Thing, She-Hulk, Invisible Woman, Reed Richards, Human Torch and Thor

For Timely’s 70th Anniversary (the company Marvel will come from) they do another one of those borders.  I didn’t care for how they said Marvel’s 70th anniversary, as that isn’t quite right.  Also, who celebrates 70th anniversary, when if you wait five years, you get a proper 75th Anniversary?  Bonkers.

Kitty wasn’t part of that border – it was mostly men, but she showed up on an issue and Magik got on another one.

The one she did show up on was the Women of Marvel border, that was awesome!

The only problem with the Timely 70 and Women of Marvel was that they were variants instead of proper covers but that’s what this current age is like these days.
