Art by Frazer Irving

I have to admit that I liked Irving’s style a great deal more this time out than last time.  Glad he got another chance.  Most likely because he’s drawing real people instead of demons.  I can relate to that.

Seems to me that the foundation has been built and now Bendis can tell his revolutionary story.

Magik training with Tempus is cool.  Shows the danger of not only knowing what your powers are, but also not even knowing your limits.

An interesting choice Irving makes with the layout with the Magneto texting scene.  I don’t blame him for wanting to draw the classic Magneto, as the all white suit still isn’t doing it for me, either.

Glad someone included the real conversation in the text as I had no idea.

I liked the Magneto / Maria Hill scene.  Both really are in character.

Hopefully with Battle of the Atom, that people don’t forget Dazzler is in a closet and five years don’t pass and no one notices.

I do like the idea of college students liking the X-Men.  I never have understood the whole “because they are mutants, we hate and fear them” story point.  Like, to the general public in the Marvel Universe, is there really that much of a difference between the Fantastic Four and the X-Men?  If a new hero comes onto the scene, does the press wait for confirmation that the new hero is a mutant or not?  Why would anyone say mutant then?

That’s sort of why I liked in recent years that the X-Men went from being a racial metaphor to a persecuted minority metaphor.  Whatever you are, be proud of who you are and what makes you unique in this world (unless you are a Colossus fan, of course).  If I was living in the state of Montana, but the Marvel Montana, I probably be more annoyed with the whole super community at large.  The news would be constantly following their exploits.  Your favorite shows will be constantly being interrupted with urgent bulletins.  DVD sales are probably high in the Marvel Universe.

Mutants shouldn’t also have to lie about who they are.  I never understood either why its okay that a 16 year kid got bit by a radioactive spider and that’s okay but a 16 year old who’s X-gene kicked in is now a problem.  It’s biology, there’s nothing that kid did or done that caused the gene to become active.  I can see why if you are a mutant, you would want to pretend you are not and just tell people that you got expose to some cosmic rays or something like that and just go on being loved by the public.  But that isn’t right, be mutant and proud, that’s what I say!  Well, Magneto then Mystique said it in the First Class movie but now I’m typing it too.  Magneto, Mystique and me, yeah, that’s a good team to be a part of.  Shouldn’t have to lie or fake who you are just because another group of people can’t handle who you are.  Especially if all you are doing is living your live and not even talking or interacting with those people.  Those people just don’t like a concept and you happen to be near by and that isn’t right.

Back to Scott at the college.  Nice character beat with him getting caught up in his own speech.  I like that he probably had a couple sentences in his head but because they teleported there, he doesn’t have much time to rehearse at all.

Blockbuster Sentinel is added to the mythos.

At sixty dollars, this is the most affordable statue I’ve seen.

I’m now two behind in Kitty Pryde statues.

Happy Birthday, Terry Austin!

Terry Austin turns 61 today.  Without Austin, John Brynes’ pencils would not have looked as legendary as they do.  Also, we would not have known that Popeye is always present at big events, no matter the location.

Part One of Six

Infinity 1 Cast List

To get it out of the way, I must admit that I was pretty excited when I turned to the list of characters and saw there was an X-Men roster.

Infinity 1 Kitty 1

Then I was disappointed that Kitty, Storm and Wolverine’s one page was a reprinted material from the Free Comic Book Day issue.  It holds promise that the X-Men might, at least, be appearing in this series.

Really like Cheung’s art, it is very clean and nice.  I bet that if I look it up, every time I’ve seen it, Ponsor has colored it.

I like how Beast is the X-Men substitute for Xavier in the Marvel Illuminati.

I like looking at the list of characters, for these big crossovers, and seeing who I don’t know:

Black Swan

The Builders

The Spaceknights (If Rom isn’t there, do they matter?)

This version of Captain Universe

Ex Nihilo

Nightmask

Starbrand

Manifold

Not to bad.  Took me til I was looking at the list to notice Iron Man is listed twice, for Illuminati and Avengers.  Different suits for each.  Do not like the Avengers helmet at all, looks silly or something.

Nice seeing Abigail Brand again, been a fan since her first appearance.

Black Bolt has five wives!?!   Oooof, I wonder how Medusa felt about that?  And which story did all of that happened in?  Miss those little editor’s boxes at times like these.  Or a note in the back.  This is my first exposure to Hickman, so it was probably in his previous work.

He loves one, Medusa, and hates one, hopefully not the horse headed one.

I’m a sucker for the whole, look at this panel, now notice the difference in this panel.  It’s a great use of the medium.  The Illuminati, first with their proper faces, then with skulls.

I really like the idea of seeing which word Black Bolt says with his power.  Every time I’ve ever seen it depicted before, you only seen the sound wave, and I’m left wondering what he said.  It’s a very nice touch, hopefully it’s a new policy.  Like in the late 90s, when they decided to actual make Sye Richards really invisible, even to the reader, that was a very awesome touch. It didn’t last long though.

The Earth may not have Avengers, but we still have X-Men, New Warriors, Slingers and The New Fantastic Four as options.  So don’t fret too much ladies and gentlemen, we’ll be okay.

Looking at the tie ins, not slated to get any, I’ll see if I’m getting issue two or not.  I like the break down in the back, makes sense, that if Hickman is writing the main mini, that you should buy his Avengers series, as they tie in. New Avengers 12, looks to be the aftermath issue, which I like those, and most likely sets up the next crossover.  Which might be Cataclysm from the Ultimate Universe.

The Dot Com Era Begins!

I finally told my lovely, yet beautiful wife that I started a blog and she was okay with me paying to own the domain name proper.

No offense to WordPress or the free bloggers but I really wanted to drop the .wordpress from my blog as fast as possible.

I also needed to prove to my wife that I wasn’t goofing around with this either.

All of that lead up is to say this: I’m taking this blog onto the road!

I have us set up as a Page over at Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/shadowandflamewithmagik

And a Group :

https://www.facebook.com/groups/539954792738815/

Also, I figured I wasn’t really using my Twitter account, so I will use that as the Twitter account for this site:

http://www.twitter.com/JackalsIII

I don’t have any other media sites to promote, as I feel the Big Two should cover most of it.

If you would like to count me as a friend on Facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/JackalsIII

I’m trying to be more active with my online presence.

I’m testing the connection ability with this post, so hopefully it all works like it is supposed to.

My experience with learning curves is not stellar, but here is hoping it all works out!

World War X Part Two

Can’t believe that Jean had sex with Logan, and now is having sex with his son.  That girl has a type!

Ultimate Comics X-Men 30 Shadowcat 1

I like that Kitty is not going to just turn the cheek and let Jean keep attacking Utopia.  No, Kitty is going to match her, move for move.

Ultimate Comics X-Men 30 Shadowcat 2

Really glad we are not getting scenes of Mach Two secretly planning to betray Kitty, this is war, choose a side and stick with it.

Sending robots to attack Kitty is just plain dumb.  She destroys anyrhing electrical.  It’s like those two were never on the same team.

So Tian is off the coast of Asia and Utopia is somewhere in Colorad.  That has to be several hours away from each other.  Almost silly length of space to send troops from.

Oh man, the power set on Magma here is insane!  She straight up added new land and environments.  I like Mach Two asking the question if she us taking resources away from other locations, as that is how Storm’s powers use to work in the original Marvel Universe.  At least, if she constantly used her powers for a length of time.  Magma states it isn’t as she knows what she is doing.

Kitty offers Colossus the leadership of Utopia.  Hopefully, her plan is to stay on as co-leader.

Hellfire Saga Part Four

Wolverine and the X-Men 34 Kitty 1

I liked this penultimate issue to the Hellfire Saga.

I like how you can’t do permanent damage to any of these characters, so the next best thing, is to destroy their clothes.  That’s a nice touch.

Wish Wilhelmina and Husk looked more different from each other, but as thy were in different scenes, it was never hard to distinguish the two if them.

Kade keeps taking a beating this issue.  Good job, Broo!

We might be losing Broo now, but we probably have done everything there is to do with the character.  I wished we got original Broo back, but I like that they are either postponing it as long as possible or never doing it.  That is pretty impressive.  Also, you can only do that with non-movie characters.

Some big action sequences, with all the different types of Krakoas, and Iceman getting to create giant ice shaped robots.

We hear that Bobby has not gotten to second base with Kitty yet.  Pretty impressive.

Once Kitty gets to the actual Hellfire Academy, thoe kids put something in tge walls that both hurts Kitty to phase through them, but also dampens telepaths.  Great moment with how Letterer Clayton Cowles gets to reveal the broken speech bubble from Rachel.  Very nice touch.

Poor Toad and Husk, they are going to have a long conversation once this arc is over.

Kade believes he is about to win, right when the other Hellfire members are about to turn on him.

Astonishing X-Men 65

Written by Marjorie Liu

Artist is Gabriel Hernandez Walta

Color Artist is Cris Peter

This conclusion wrapped up fast!

Mystique doesn’t keep the Death Seed long at all.

Awesome that it is Kitty who takes it out of her.  I thought maybe Kitty was going to turn evil just by holding it as she disappears afterwards, but the story doesn’t go in that direction.  She hides it somewhere, which who knows if that is ever going to get picked up ever again.  Maybe during the next Apocalypse story, whenever that happens.

Bobby’s father was not killed last issue.

Apparently Iceman makes for a far better villain than a hero.  Which I sort of like that he knows that, and doesn’t like that but has to be a hero as if he ever turn bad again, it would just be the same fight all over again.

I really like that Liu made a reference to Uncanny X-Men 350, with how Gambit had to make his way home from Antarctica after being banished there.  Which is still one of the oddest choices the X-Men have made as a team.  Plus, that comic came out in 1997, 14 years ago.  She really didn’t have to make the connection but it is totally cool that she did as that was a big moment in Gambit’s life as he was kicked off the team and pretty much left for dead.  Odd that Karma knows that, but as she herself was left for dead once, maybe she’s keeping track of stuff like that.

Really wish I knew the story with Opal, I wonder if it is even interesting to read for myself, or is it better to just have it be summarized like we get here and last issue.  Does seem to be a messed up thing to do, tell a guy he is the father and then tell him he is not when he clearly can’t handle it.  Of course, I imagine that, since this is a comic, that Bobby was meant to be the father, but a new editor came into the title and realized you can’t have one of the Original Five be a deadbeat father, as you already have that with Cyclops.  Unless Bobby was first at it.  Wonder which issues this whole thing takes place during.

http://www.comicbookdb.com/character_chron.php?ID=3233

I bet it was during the Iceman mini.  She only has 26 appearances, and I bet you could own them all under 50 dollars.  She first showed up in X-Factor.  I thought she was from the 60s, that must have been a different girlfriend.

Liu does a great job writing Kitty, especially with the monologues.  Kitty sure likes to speak at length.

I also dig how no one is in a costume besides Warbird, Mystique and Thor.  Which is odd, as their suits are temperature-controlled.

I also like how Kitty can phase multiple people as long as she is holding one person, and that person is holding a different person.  She can phase an entire human chain, which comes in handy.

Not exactly sure why someone can’t place Bobby in jail, as people are dead, on such a huge scale.  Maybe as he would get the chair, but hopefully it isn’t due to no cell can hold him.  As he is a hero and should just stay in the cell under his own influence.  Plus, it is the Marvel Universe, there is a cell to hold him or at least, that can attempt to.  There should be a Hero Prison, like during Civil War, Prison 41 I want to say, that heroes voluntarily go to to serve a limited sentence for times like these.  Kept off the books and can leave whenever.

Astonishing X-Men 65 Kitty 1

Astonishing X-Men 65 Kitty 2

Astonishing X-Men 65 Kitty 3

I could see Kitty and Bobby breaking up at the end, but he was under mind control, so she most likely gives him a pass, as she is friends with Wolverine and this type of thing happens to him all the time.

I have no interest in the next issue, which is a shame as I really enjoyed this arc but I need more than Karma, Warbird, Cecilia Reyes and Vampire Jubilee to be interested in a comic.

I wonder if we are going to get Crying Bobby as the legacy of this storyline.

Just read the description of X-Factor 63, and it states Opal is adopted but only learned of it recently and now she wants to find her birth parents.  What a messed up to thing to then do to a former boyfriend.  Plus, she names her son, Robert, as well.  Hopefully her son has not been told about how Iceman could be the father or could not be the father, as he grew up, as that is a horrible thing to do to a child.

Okay, Robert first appears in that Iceman mini in 2001, that probably deals with all of this as Opal doesn’t appear again between that mini and this arc here.  There probably is a website that has a review of it out there.

http://www.uncannyxmen.net/db/issues/showfaq.asp?fldAuto=56

Sounds like Opal was probably forced to lie to Bobby about being the father.  He knows by the end that he isn’t so it wasn’t a long standing plot point until now.  I just read the brief descriptions for each issue as it doesn’t sound very good.
