all leading up to Avengers vs X-Men, which will be another post
Magik is hand picked to be on Cyclops' Extinction Team Storm's "Raise your hand if you've never been considered a supervillain" lives rent free in my head The Team fights Sleeping Celestials & Sinister is involved, two threats that define this new volume
The X-Men fight Sinister, who defeats himself More Celestials arrive, Scott talks at them, they leave, and the world not only fears & hates them, but are also in awe of the X-Men
Sinister finds a Phalanx being, does some experiments and sets it loose on the world X-Men show up, defeat it, but something feels off Magik doesn't do much but school bus people around, but I like how she's always looking after her brother, Jugglossus.
Psylocke informs the X-Men that Tabula Rasa (in Montana) exists after Uncanny X-Force 14 She joins as Emma is armless Magik & Juggerlossus are a pair to investigate Piotr proves he can still feel, which makes Magik happy
Magik doesn't do much as she's knocked out (somehow) and taken underground by some pests (probably so she doesn't regroup everyone immediately) Cyclops makes a friend of the Apex, and we learn more about the Immortal Man
Magik finally wakes up, just in time for the plot to resolve itself with the Immortal Man & Unwife Juggerlossus seems overwhelmed, but Magik shows him compassion.
Namor makes peace with an underwater Ocean, like only he can
Love the opening of this issue, Danger shares her thoughts on Magik Abigail Brand needs Cyclops to save the planet from Terminus. The Avengers show up to help Hope is excited about the team-up Emma hassles Storm about the Avengers
Avengers continue to fight Terminus X-Men get beaten by Unit, until Hope gets Cyclops to just listen Captain America recognizes Cyclops' main mission is to keep Hope safe Juggerlosuss wants to be locked up with Magik & in her same cell, which seems rude
Inside front cover ad is for Avengers X-Sanction, with Cable’s return to life, as he fights the Avengers – one at a time. It has no connection to AvX.
We get quick looks at the team, of this series. Magneto, Colossus, Cyclops, Storm, Emma, Magik, Hope, Namor and Mister Sinister, as the villain of the volume. Magik’s description – Magk (Illyana Rasputin) : Teleportation, Ex-Queen of Demonic Realm. That’s pretty much her, in one sentence.
Welcome to San Francisco. Adventure Awaits! I haven’t read this issue before, as sadly, I didn’t have money for the first three issues of both this Uncanny X-Men series and Wolverine and the X-Men. Of course, now those are the most expensive issues. As the years go by, they become more affordable.
Mister Sinister finds two tourists, as they look upon the Sleeping Celestial. He kills them, rather quickly.
Utopia. Scott and Emma are heading to their big meeting. Emma kisses him, to give him confidence.
We get Pacheco’s rendition of the main team. I like the position everyone is. Magneto is outside, by himself. Danger is by herself. The Rasputin siblings are together. Storm is at the table, by herself. We will get plenty of Namor and Hope team ups. They are all in costume, only Scott isn’t. Scott tells them that they are his, Extinction Team.
The Gold Side books, on sale are – Wolverine and the X-Men 3, X-Men Legacy 260 and Uncanny X-Force 19.
Apparently, with half the mutants on Utopia, Cyclops had the budget for nicer chairs, in the war room. Namor really likes his. Danger states that Doctor Nemesis built Colossus’ chair, so that if Jugglossus appears, the chair can take the pressure. I forgot that he got the power upgrade but, at first, he was resisting using it. That will change, and not even that long from now.
So great that Illyana is so protective of her older brother. She has faith that he can control his urges.
Scott wants everyone to get back on track. Scott actually uses the word, Schism, to explain the current situation. This team is Scott’s statement to the world.
Scott wants the world to see this team as the Mutant A-List. They have tried this before, but never to this scale. If humanity is saved, enough times, by the X-Men – they will have to be accepted.
Storm wants to play a fun game. Raise your hand, if you’ve never gone through a stage that others characterized as “mainly super villain.” Possibly, my favorite page of the entire issue.
Storm and Hope have their hands up. Scott has his hand up, but Storm wonders if he should. Emma says that he is working on his villain turn. So great, that someone recognized that this team doesn’t look like heroes, on paper. Scott knows that this team, should be unstoppable. Scott does have another motive, he wants his team to be the targets, for the world. That way, Wolverine and his “little school” isn’t on anyone’s radar. So the team gets to do nothing, until the world absolutely needs them.
Utopia. Week One. Overview of Mutant Activity. Psylocke sees no action. X-Club updates Danger. The Street team has increased their arrest rates to 15%. There have been no new mutants discovered. The New Mutants are searching for Blink. Extinction Team, no action.
Week Two. Agent Brand calls Scott and Emma. She informs them that the Dreaming Celestial is emitting an odd energy signature. She is going to call the Avengers next but Scott dissuades her. If they can’t save the day, the Avengers don’t stand a chance. I like this Scott.
Golden Gate Park. San Francisco. Look at Scott, dealing out compliments to Magik! Good for him! Doctor Nemesis states that the levels are off the charts, but I like how Danger translates that to Cyclops.
Hope notices that the head of the Dreaming Celestial, transforms into Sinister’s head. Cyclops asks Emma to telepathically connect him to Sinister.
She does so, but with some safety protocols. Sinister wants Cyclops to thank him, Cyclops wanted a big threat, and here is Sinister – providing one. Scott doesn’t like that Sinister knows his goals.
The Sinister Head launches lasers at Emma. She transforms into diamond form, and states that she is indestructible. She sends a call out to Namor, I thought she couldn’t use her telepathic powers while in diamond form? Namor wants confirmation that she desires him. She tells him that Scott desires him, which isn’t as appealing. With an, Imperius Rex!, he smashes the Sinister Head, to the ground.
Danger, again, downplays a message from X-Club.
A slew of Battle-bots, which I want to say is pretty good on Cyclops, for referencing something from 15 years ago. Cyclops tells Colossus to contain all of the nanobots.
A tidal wave of energy blasts start exploding. Colossus gets flung a distance. The worst though, is that Emma – in diamond form – has her left arm break off! Which is crazy intense! I didn’t know this happened in the first issue! Cyclops doesn’t waste any time, directing the rest of the team. I’m glad that we get a friendly reminder of Hope’s powers – to mimic, those around her. Scott tells Illyana to check on her brother.
From a safe distance, Storm and Magneto witness the destruction. He tries to carry a conversation with her, but this may be the beginning of making Storm the worst, as she doesn’t give him anything to work with.
Illyana teleports to her dumb brother, he can’t win at his current strength level. He summons Juggolossus Magik tries to warn him, about the addictive nature of the unstoppable power.
Juggolossus is quick to threats but can calm himself. Magik ports him back to the fight, this is the last we will see of her.
Doctor Nemesis calls Danger, the reason the battle-bots are falling, is due to them not having an exo-skeleton. Magneto knows what he has to do.
The Blue Side of the Titles are – Uncanny X-Men 3, Generation Hope 14 and X-Men 22.
The Sinister Head lands in the Palace of Fine Arts. Once it lands, everybody turns into Mister Sinister!
Things To Come . . . Emma and Namor kiss! They are force to, by Unit. Phalanx will appear, for an issue. Hope and the Phoenix, is Avengers vs X-Men. The bulk of this, will be Tubula Rasa.
There is a Letter to Humanity, by Scott Summers.
I love these graphs!
Look at Magik’s in the Extinction Team!
The side teams are – X-Club / Secret Recon / Street Team / Clean-Up / Gen Hope and the various Recruits.
Just to include it, here is the graph from Wolverine and the X-Men 1 –
Of course, I’m a huge fan that Kitty Pryde and Lockheed, share the top spot with Wolverine! I know the Gold Side, gets a revised graphic but I’m not sure if Uncanny does.
Such a great first issue!
Inside back cover ad is fro The Defenders by Fraction and Dodson, I own issue 12 and is pretty good.
I wonder if the four art teams adds to my memory of these last two issues not being very good.
Issue opens with Sabretooth shouting that he is the king of the world – as Titanic came out a year earlier. Claremont must have thought it was safe to evoke the phrase but it is 18 years later and that film is still the only thing I associate that phrase with.
I’m not sure who is narrating the issue, I believe it has to be Kitty as it isn’t the two savages in this issue.
Kitty is unconscious and Sabretooth threatens to rape her but she’s underage so I guess he has limits. Except, that she has to be at least 18 by now, by the time Excalibur 120, she would have been at least 18 to 21. But if it prevents Sabretooth from doing anything physically to her, then fine, she’s 17.
Lowtown, Madripoor. Hand ninjas and Hydra goons are making their way through the city. They get attacked by someone who looks suspiciously like Captain America.
Wolverine is in the sewers, he’s here to interrupt whatever scheme the two fractions have. It feels like we skipped an issue between 126 and 127. I get that he fell into the ocean but then he came back up and into another plot.
Hydra and Hand are concern as now it seems like the Hulk’s Mr. Fixit is also on Madripoor.
Wolverine, while smoking and drinking (as he’s super kewl) is the one to posted the story of Mr. Fixit being on the island nation. His neck wound hasn’t healed yet, from Sabretooth so the smoking isn’t great for him.
Wolverine, who was also Captain America earlier, is now pretending to be the Hulk. I could have sworn this issue was in the Erik Larsen run of Wolverine – which I super enjoyed. Wolverine pretends to be the Human Torch next.
Hightown, Madripoor. An elevator opens in front of a slew of guys with guns.
Shadowcat confronts Bao Tien.
Bao Tien has helped get Viper captured, when she reached out to him for help.
Kitty and Sabretooth are working together, we’re definitely missing pages. This is definitely the most these two have hung out together. In Exiles, versions of these two will be on the same team but they barely spent much time together there too.
Wolverine does his best impression of Storm, Cyclops and Beast – which is odd as if someone was doing things like Beast, I would think they were just doing a claw-less Wolverine impression. Wolverine is doing all of this, so that those who are holding Viper know that Wolverine has friends and they are going to free Mrs. Wolverine. Wolverine has reached out to his friend, The Police Chief Tai. Tai isn’t able to provide any help, as he wants to live to see tomorrow. Tai offers the helpful advice that Madripoor needs a new prince at the seat of power.
Later, Wolverine smells Sabretooth and is ready to attack.

Wolverine sees that Sabretooth and Shadowcat are working together. Sabretooth likes the idea of having the next leader of Madripoor being a friend of his.
Issue ends with the Hand leader, Matsuo and Hydra leader, Hydra Comrade (I guess?) are set up a trap for our heroes.
Cutting Edge, letters from – Michael Bronnenberg of Fortuna, CA / Wendy Gonzalez of San Jose, CA / James Jones of Davenport, IA / Parnell L. Fleming of Brooklyn, NY / Julian Castro of Austin, TX
Legendary Inker Bob Wiacek worked his magic this issue! Pacheco’s art is amazing, as per usual, but there is something that makes this issue pop out.
While checking to see if Bob Wiacek was on Twitter, he isn’t, but I found this link to a commercial that he did – way back in 2003 – with 50 Cent and G-Unit
Thanks to YouTuber and Marvel Legend, Bob Wiacek for hosting his own video! I subscribed so hard to his channel.
How cool is that!?! Pretty darn, I say!
Warren Ellis, one of my Top Five favorite Kitty Pryde writers – Claremont, Humphries, Davis and Byrne. Ellis started his run with issue 83 and went until 103. We will be reviewing five of his issues, this month. This issue, Ellis brings Lockheed back after a two year absence, ever since issue 76!
The very first page is the villain, Mountjoy’s face as he says it’s a tasty world.” We’ll learn more about him later.
The second page has, this issue moves pretty fast and is pretty awesome – Jean Grey, at the Xavier School, picking up the mail. Alistaire Stuart has some to the X-Men, trying to get in touch with Excalibur. Talk about being on the wrong side of the pond!
At the same time, 7am, in an expensive chunk of New York real Estate – Shinobi Shaw, the Black King, is still awake. Shaw isn’t happy, as the London branch is up to something but he has no connections to the Inner Circle there. Martine, his assistant, is bored. Shaw has to reach out to Brian Braddock, as he has a standing seat at the table.
If it is 7am in New York, then it is noon on Muir Island Medical Research Station. Which four hours doesn’t seem like Excalibur should be that out of touch with what is happening, state side.
Nightcrawler is bouncing a soccer ball off of his own head. He is debuting a new look, shaved head and a goatee. I like this era of a fun swashbuckler Nightcrawler. It was Amanda’s idea, for the makeover. Colossus and Kitty are hanging out with him.
Picking up on a thread, from way back in Excalibur 76! Kitty is still wanting to check on her father. Which was twenty issues ago, so nearly two years have passed – in our time.
Kurt whiptails the ball to Kitty (hard!) and she tosses it to Colossus, who bounces it off of his own head.
There is no chance of Kitty’s parents ever getting back together.
Kitty doesn’t like loose ends, and that reminds Kurt that Amanda has been bugged by a loose end for some time now. Kurt kicks the ball back.
Mile High Comics is having a giant X-Men & Spider-Man sale! Uncanny X-Men 122 -128, 130 – 139, are $13.00. They must have been out of 129.
Colossus catches the ball, no hands mister! Colossus advises Kurt that he should be direct with Amanda.
Meggan arrives, also sporting a new look! – which I like. Kurt has a phone call. Jean is on the phone. Meggan also points to Lockheed, who is no longer sulking about. Lockheed has been protesting the Pryde & Wisdom relationship. He has taken measures to letting his protest be known, as he is chewing on Wisdom’s pants.
The Inner Circle of the London Hellfire Club. Instead of Black and White houses, they have Black and Red, they must be checkers fans. Black is mad at Red, as the events of Excalibur 88 – 90 (the always helpful editor, Suze, lets us know) regarding the Dream Nails storyline, have tampered with the Hellfire Club’s goals. Now they have to move up their plans, and in a hurry.
The Red King mentions that Wisdom has killed a lot of people. The Black King (I wish they would name check each other) wants to make sure that the final steps of the plan, are done correctly. Black Air, the British version of SHIELD, in a way, needs to be tighten up, as Dream Nails, was one of their operations. This lady, with long finger nails, does magic and she is getting inpatient.
There is an ad for Generation X, the made-for-television film, which is set to premiere February 1996, to FOX.
Kurt, Kitty and Colossus take the call and Jean and Scott are on the other line, they are talking through a fancy big screen television phone.
Cyclops warmingly greets Kurt and Kitty, leaving out Colossus. Jean starts with wanting them to tell Brian that his sister, Psylocke, is still in a coma.
Thanks to the always helpful, uncannyxmen.net, Psylocke is in a coma, thanks to Sabretooth. Uncanny X-Men 328 – 330.
Kurt realizes the two X-Men didn’t greet Colossus and asks Colossus to come into view of the camera. Cyclops and Colossus reference that Colossus was experiencing head trauma, when he joined Magneto and now that has been fixed.
Jean turns the camera around, to reveal Alistaire Stuart. Which is weird that he stood by, silently, as these peeps exchanged pleasantries.
Stuart and Colossus are wearing pretty much the same outfit. So they are both, brunettes wearing brown trenchcoats, which is an odd choice for Pacheco to make.
Kitty asks Alistaire to explain why he is in America. Like an idiot, Colossus, asks who this guy is. Like really? I get that you don’t know him, but clearly Kurt and Kitty do, so maybe just stand there, listen and soak in the information. If you have questions, ask afterwards. You dummy.
Alistaire explains that Black Air, the sinister product of the peaceful WHO agency.
Great scene of the three Excalibur teammates whispering if they should believe him.
Kurt states that he is on his way. Kitty is seen stating that she is going to ask Brian for the Midnight Runner and that she is going to bring Meggan along. I’m sure the speech balloon tail should be pointing towards Kurt.
Muir Island gets a second call and Kitty takes it. Shinobi Shaw wants to talk to Brian.
Eastern England. Sebastian Shaw, who isn’t dead (but Shinobi thinks he is, as that is how he became a member of the Upstarts) and he is meeting with Scratch, with Black Air. In exchange for a box, Shaw receives some files. What is in the box, is what Black Air needs and wants. Shaw and Tessa (Sage) leaves and we could follow their adventure in X-Man 15. I own issues 12, 13, 16, 26 and 60 – so I won’t be taking that trip. With Onslaught looming, the titles are going to start crossing over.
Back at Muir Island. Kurt leaves with Meggan, in the Moonlight Flit. Now, uncannyxmen.net points out that this is an error. As earlier, Kurt states that he will ask for the Midnight Runner and now is flying the Flit. My No Prize solution, as Brian will leave, next issue in the Runner – is that Brian didn’t want lend Kurt the Runner and gave him the Flit.
The Flit is a complete medical plane, it has no weapons and is completely voice operated, as sometimes, you can’t be saving someone and flying a plane. Just read X-Men 25, and how hard it is to fly a plane with a wounded Wolverine and bad weather. The Flit doesn’t have weapons as Brian doesn’t want to fight anymore.
Brian has a videoconference with the younger Shaw. Psylocke was always more into the Hellfire Club – for the parties and their father liked it for business reasons, Brian was never really into it. Shaw mentions how one of the Inner Circle isn’t who they say they are. Back in a Bishop miniseries (I know!) a character, Mountjoy, was introduced. He is a shape-stealer, instead of a shape-shifter. He takes on the shape of a person, as he digests that person. Sort of like a Warwolf, but with a longer process, I guess?
I like how the footnote states that it happened in the pages of a Bishop series but a page turn, you get everything you sort of need about the character. Also great is the transition of Shaw telling Brian about Mountjoy to Kitty telling Brian about Mountjoy.
Brian decides that he will join the Inner Circle. I wonder what happens to the current Bishop, once Brian arrives?
Meanwhile, Wisdom and Lockheed are having a disagreement. Wisdom wants his clothes back and Lockheed wants Wisdom gone. This is so great!
Douglock is still trying to find his place in the world. He tried to view it through the lens of logic but now he is going to give chaos a shot.
On the way back to Muir Island, the Moonlight Flit is attacked. I wouldn’t have minded seeing the scene of Meggan meeting Cyclops and Jean Grey. The issue ends with the Flit, falling out of the sky.
X-Facts, the current version of Bullpen Bulletins. Wolverine’s title reaches the 100th issue mark. Will he get his adamantium back? The second wave of Analagam are coming. Issue Title – Amplified Heart
We continue our tradition of spotlighting comics with the word “Heart” in their issue title, on Valentine’s Day.
Issue opens with Moira MacTaggert recapping the history of the X-Men.
Moira introduces the team, to us, the reader. Nightcrawler, Amanda Sefton, Shadowcat, Pete Wisdom, Wolfsbane, Meggan, Non-Captain Britain, lousy Colossus, Douglock and even, Rory Campbell.
This issue must take place after Age of Apocalypse. X-Man is now in the Proper Marvel Universe and we are getting a full page of recap of where he comes from. Apparently, once he got here, he fought Xavier and won. I imagine that Xavier didn’t appreciate this loss and will get his sweet revenge during the Onslaught storyline. After this, Nate Grey has come to Muir Island to learn more about himself.
Moira was speaking with Xavier. Nate has done a brief scan of her memories.
Muir Island, in the Dead of Night. Pete Wisdom, who has made a full recovery from the beating that Colossus gave him, three weeks ago. Colossus didn’t like his Katya dating a new man. Amazingly, Excalibur didn’t kick him off the island the minute the beating stopped. Kitty, here, is trying to explain what Colossus has been through. As they walk, the island starts to rumble.
At the same time, Kurt and Colossus are chatting. Colossus is sad, as no one is talking to him. For good reason, three weeks ago, he dman near killed Pete Wisdom. People should be unease around him. They are close enough to see the explosion, that caused the island to shake.
The Communications Suite. Nate looks like he wants to kill Moira!
Widom is under the impression that Moira has purposely blown up the Communications Suite, with one of her experiments. Pryde is phasing them through floors, to get there faster.
Brian and Meggan are woken up, with all of this ruckus.
Nate is screaming at Moira, thinking that she wants him dead by the time he is twenty-one. Moira, being the brave woman that she is, stands up to him. She doesn’t want him dead at twenty-one, his powers should kill be him by the time he is that age.
Doctor Rory Campbell is shaking, hugging his knees. He knows he is destined to turn into Ahab, the Mutant Hunter. So he is scared of doing anything, at this moment, that might lead him down that path. Wolfsbane is on her way to her adopted mother.
I’m not sure how much of this issue is a continuation of last issue, so I’m playing catch up. Nate read Spoor’s mind, which was a mistake as Spoor is a villain. One of these days, I’ll have to read these issues to figure out what Spoor’s deal is as I don’t recall him, at all.
Douglock is on his way to the Communications Suite.
Kurt is the first one there, so Nate has time to bury Kurt under some rubble. Pryde and Wisdom show up, Nate throws a mind bolt, which Pryde phases so Wisdom takes the direct hit. Wisdom’s ribs are broken, again.
Pryde asks Moira to come closer but Moira tells her to stay put. Moira, full of Scottish temper and sass, dares Nate to read her mind.
Colossus is running towards the Suite. Wolfsbane tells him to stop, as Moira needs to teach Nate Grey a lesson. Pryde is super impressed that this plan is working. Nate is like a superpowered teenager, that has never had any oversight.
Nate sees Colossus kill Moira’s son, Proteus. Which must have been terrible for Moira, to have her son’s killer on the team. Him drinking her juice and eating her eggs. I imagine she must have relived that moment, over and over again. Everything he joked or laugh at a joke, she must have been so annoyed.
Moira and Nate are able to finally talk, now that he has calmed down. Moira wants Nate to believe her. To help, Colossus offers to let Nate read his mind.
This sparks a Spartacus moment, as Pryde would allow him to read her mind, as well. As would Wisdom, Braddock and Meggan. Wisdom says it in his usual charm. Nate can’t handle all of these different minds, around him. Douglock, not reading the room, offers for Nate to read his cortex.
Campbell shows up, and offers Nate to read his very terrified mind. Colossus shows up, suggests Nate learn things the hard way as that worked for him.
Nate, probably just wanting to move on, finally opens his mind to everyone. He learns that Pryde is here as this is the only fight (Xavier’s dream) that is worth fighting for. Wisdom is there, as the job needs doing.
Morning over Muir. Issue ends with Nate flying away – more confused than he was at the beginning.
Swordstrokes, letters from – John Smith / Doug Tennant / Bobby Johnson / Craig Langrall / Emily Hu (so many people not wanting their addresses published) / Tom Johnson of Butlayo, MA / Vivien Collins of Colchester, Essex, England / Tina Kemp / Misha Syeed of San Diego, CA and Mark Hager of Ransomville, NY.
Next issue – Nightcrawler and Meggan get caught up in a deadly mid-air dogfight — while the villainous Mountjoy hooks up with London’s Hellfire Club — and Shinobi Shaw turns to Brian Braddock for help! Be there . .. or be sorry!
We’ve reviewed issue 96 already this month.

On the cover, three teams are represented – Power Pack, New Thunderbolts and Defenders.
There are some profiles worthy of purchasing :
Big Hero 6, just because this is Big Hero 6 Month. Art by Gus Vazquez. Three years later, this extact profile, word for word, in the Marvel Your Universe Saga. The team did not last at all.
Excalibur, it doesn’t list Lockheed as a member – which is foolish. Art by Alan Davis.
Exiles, lists Magik as a former member.
New Mutants lists Magik as a former member. Picture shown is the squad.
Power Pack has Magik mentioned a couple of times in the profile.
X-Men, of course has Kitty as a member. Art by Carlos Pacheco.
. . .
With this, Big Hero 6 Month comes to an end. Pretty sure we won’t be watching this in the theater. We will buy it once it comes out on BluRay. Here is hoping it is good and profitable, so that we get more Disney / Marvel animated films. Even if they are direct to DVD, as long as they are adaptations or good – I will be happy, either way.
Also from the cover, AvX is one month away so this was the last story to show them working together as a team. Also, one of the few times of seeing them work as a team.
Issue opens with a narration by Danger. She is the warren to the X-Berg.
She isn’t happy that one of her prisoners is Magik, who is a fellow member of Cyclops’ Extinction Team. Also not happy, is Colossus.
Magik is in a holding cell, strap to an explosive straight jacket, due to her actions with the Elder Gods in Limbo that resulted in her getting her soul back. Cyclops wasn’t happy with her as she risked the entire universe to do so and sort of tricked the X-Men into helping. When she is out in the field, her uniform is also set up with the same time of explosives – so that if she goes rogue, they will go off. The cool thing about it is that Magik allows this punishment to take place.
Outside, Emma is attacking a Mr. Sinister hologram. I like the idea of an outdoor Danger Room, for these simple fighting sessions. If all you are doing is fighting a few opponents, you don’t need to be coup up inside a giant room, you can enjoy being outside and fresh air and fight a few foes at the same time.
Emma is fighting Mr. Sinister, who opened this volume of Uncanny X-Men and was the recurring villain, now that I think about it. Uncanny X-Men Volume Two is pretty much Cyclops’ Extinction Team along with Mr. Sinister’s continued attempts to fight that team, all written by Gillen.
The Extinction Team is – Cyclops, Emma, Magik, Magneto, Danger, Namor, Hope Summers, Storm and Colossus.
Emma is fighting Mr. Sinister as during their last fight, while in diamond form, her arm was sliced off. Luckily, Doctor Nemesis was able to figure out how to reattach it so that when she reverted back to her regular form, her arm would still be attached. She’s also wearing a white bikini type of training outfit, or maybe it is a proper sports bra but because it is Emma, it only appears to be bikini. I do like seeing her work out and doing fight training as she clearly has to work on her physical side as her second mutation makes her original mental powers inoperable. Being punched by a diamond fist has to still hurt but having a fighting style is always a plus.
Namor shows up, to make sure Emma is doing okay. She is glad someone cares about her recovery as Cyclops has been brooding, he really wants another mission for his team to go on. Cyclops is slightly annoying the Cuckoos as apparently he keeps asking for threats that warrant the big team.
Meanwhile at the Peak, the headquarters of SWORD, we get an awesome narration of Unit, a silver looking fellow. I became a fan of this character during Gillen’s awesome SWORD miniseries. Unit’s narration explains who some of the alien prisoners are and what type of horrible event has to happen to release all of these aliens back into freedom. His narration ends with a, “but you don’t have to worry about that happening.” Then, of course, it happens.
Unit is a bit of a know it all, he is ancient, and has seen so much. He was built by an even older race of people and they made him to maintain the peace. Then that race were killed off and he is the last remnant of them.
Back at Utopia, Colossus is about to speak to Cyclops about Illyana’s continued imprisonment. Cyclops states that enough time has passed, and he is about to go on when Agent Abigail Brand shows up and asks for their help. Emma’s initial reaction is thinking that Brand is there to insult them some more, as they have a fun chemistry Brand and the X-Men. Brand states she has no time to be mean, Earth needs saving.
Somewhere in Nevada, Magik has teleported the team to their first location. In giant words in the ground, is “I CLAIM THIS WORLD” Terminus has marked his turf. I know him as an Avengers villain that I’ve only really seen in the JLAvengers miniseries and maybe one other time in a proper Avengers comic.
Back at the Peak, Sydren (probably my favorite pure SWORD agent behind Brand and Lockheed – who feel like proper characters to me now) tells Brand that there are multiple threats. She doesn’t care about that now that the X-Men are involved, she wants him to locate Unit – as he is the biggest threat of them all.
Somewhere in Canada, a father and son are hunting. Unit appears before them, trying to speak to them in the base galactic language and of course, Earth is so backwards (to him) that we don’t even speak this language – which is a fun concept. I imagine it is like Latin, wherein if you know that language, you can meet anyone with Italian, French and Spanish background and be able to at least communicate a little with them.
Unit learns so much from this initial interaction with the two humans. From the father’s impulse to open fire, to how the type of gun implies that Earth’s viewpoint of hunting for sport is a concept still in practice here. Since Unit was attacked, he now has the ability to respond in kind and call it self-defense. Though if you use self-defense as an excuse, is it still self-defense? I’m sure there has been Law & Order episodes that state otherwise.
Turns out, Unit has a power similar to Jesse Custer, the Vertigo’s Preacher, in that he can change his voice so that it commands any who hear it (or that it is directed at). He orders the boy to run off and cover his ears. Since the father’s actions have taught him so much, he wants to learn how humans are made next.
The Extinction Team, who I like the name as it implies the mutant race is extinct as well as it sounds like the away team for the X-Men.
They have dealt with Terminus and want to know who their next target is. Emma directs their attention to the sky as a Quinjet is arriving. Emma gets the awesome line of “Someone’s assembled.” I so miss this Emma, the wise cracking all confidence Emma.
The Avengers are – Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Iron Man, the Protector (the former Marvel Boy), Captain America, Red Hulk and Wolverine but we only see his head in the plane. He doesn’t get a caption box. Probably to build up the tension as at this point, Wolverine has the Jean Grey School up and running and there is some anger there between Wolverine and Cyclops as the Schism is still fresh. But it is still polite tension, AvX will set these two on different courses that they are still mad at each other about and still not really on talking terms. Here, they can at least work together.
The Avengers have been dealing with Super Skrull in New York, and since they handled one alien threat, Brand has decided to let them assist Cyclops’ team.
Emma gets another awesome line, and gets to continue her relationship with Storm – which is a friendly rivalry, asking Storm why she didn’t assemble with her new friends. At this is during the time when Storm has joined the Avengers. I believe it lasted only two issues and that is including the one issue she joins and didn’t do much from what I remember reading about. She was a member of the Fantastic Four along with her husband, Black Panther, longer than she was a proper Avenger.
Hope, showing her age and experience, shouts “Team-Up!” which is fun. Cyclops and Wolverine finally get to glare at each other.
Sabancaya, Peru – Magneto deals with Voidian the Destroyer’s giant organ as Spider-Man punches Voidian’s face.
Chichen Itza, Mexico – The Dire Wraiths are at ancient temples, feeding off the power. So weird how Marvel has the rights to Dire Wraiths but not ROM. Weird and awkward. With Disney’s money, one would imagine they can buy the rights to ROM and do something with the rights. At least be able to print Essentials with all the issues instead of having to skip the ones with ROM. Hope and Spider-Woman are there helping.
Magik teleports the Dire Wraiths into Limbo, which there they don’t have any power.
Vancouver, Canada – Protector is dealing with the Acute Reflection after the X-Club told him about how to use their weapons against them. Danger is there, as well.
Las Vegas, Nevada – Juggerlossus is fighting Xemnu. Emma and Iron Man are creating a device so that Red Hulk can assist.
Not to be that guy, but one would think – production wise – they would have shown the Vegas scene and then the Vancouver so that it segues into the next scene with Unit in Canada better. That’s just me.
Unit is performing a vivisection on the father. He ‘apologizes” for not being able to turn off the man’s pain receptors but he has to learn all that he can with the process. He also then apologizes as his vivisection has become a dissection. I like how Unit is a fun clever robot type of character in SWORD but left to his own schemes, is a ripe bastard.
Unit then finds the son, tells him to look the other way and in a horrible panel to be seen, eye laser beams the son’s head, causing it to explode. It is horrible! He at least had the boy think of a happy thought before doing it. He claims it is a peaceful death but it sure doesn’t look it.
Then in the very next panel, he wants to learn about mutants so he thumps his head and the Cuckoos see a new mutant on Cerebra.
One of the Cuckoos, so nice that now they all have different hair colors so you can distinguish them, informs Hope that a new mutant has been detected. Hope tells her to gather her team together.
This must be before Generation Hope is a title but that is who her team is. Pixie is their teleported, and the other members are Primal, Transonic and Velocidad – who once they show up on the battlefield, informs Hope that her superhero hobby time is over and it is time to return to her day job. Cyclops tells them that rescuing new mutants is up there with saving the world, so Hope should go. Before Generation Hope became a title and our real world name for her group, the new mutants were called The Lights due to them being the first batch of new mutants Cerebra located.
The Lights, Hope and Pixie arrive and see Unit. They know it is a trap now as most mutants don’t look like a surf board with arms and a head. Hope knows that he must be one of the escapees from the Peak.
Unit commands Pixie to teleport the team eight miles to the north and then in two seconds after that, to fall asleep. Pixie complies.
I had forgotten this about Hope, that her mutant power is to mimic nearby mutants’ powers. So now that there are no mutants, she is powerless before Unit. He then commands her to drop her giant gun (she was raised by Cable, after all).
The issue ends with him finally having a mutant before him, and a powerful one at that, he wants to know what makes a mutant different from a human. He refers to her as a ‘special’ mutant.
Don’t worry the X-Men and Avengers show up before he can hurt her.
