Wolverine Barry Lyga Young Reader Novel

This is a Young Readers novel, written by Barry Lyga.  From doing some quick research for the image above, apparently this had a subtitle of, Worst Day Ever – but that doesn’t appear on the indicia or the cover of my copy.

The fun aspect to this book, is that it is written as if it is a printed blog.  I like how the images used in the book are explained away.  There are panels from comics throughout the book, so that it isn’t just text.  The panels are pulled from various titles and artists, and it is explained that the main character is an artist and likes to use various styles.  That is some clever writing, with production in mind.

The main character and his power is what I really want to discuss in this review.  Before that, the main reason why I bought it was two reasons.  I flipped through it and saw that Kitty Pryde made a few appearances and it was used at Hastings, so it was only $2.49.

The main character of the novel is, Eric Mattias.  He is writing his blog as he is a student of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.  He is writing the blog as he has the worst mutant power of them all.  His mutant power is, as it described on page ten – people don’t notice him.  If he concentrates really hard, he can get people’s attention.

This book came out in 2013.  In May 2014, three guys got together and write X-Men Legacy 300 – Mike Carey, Simon Spurrier and Christos Gage.  Together, they created . . . ForgetMeNot.  Who, in comparison to Mattias, has it so much easier.

ForgetMeNot’s power makes you forget about him, once he is out of your line of sight.  Mattias’ power is that, even if he is in front of you, you still can’t see him.  Xavier knows both of them, but it hurts his head, concentrating so hard, to be able to register Mattias.  Mattias tries to make his hero name, Nowhere Kid or Nowhere Boy.

Mattias, early in the novel, causes Colossus to trip over him in a Danger Room scenario.

My main issue with this novel is this, does Lyga know that ForgetMeNot exists and is essentially a middle aged man version of his 13 year old character?  His novel came out first, so do any of the three ForgetMeNot creators know about the book?

Eric, Wolverine and Angel go on a mission where they rescue Cannonball from Unus the Untouchable, so it isn’t in continuity but it is a fun book.  A very fast read.

There is an intense battle with Wolverine and Sabretooth, towards the end.  Kitty Pryde shows up too.

Uncanny X-Men Volume Three Issue 32

Uncanny X-Men V3 32

Inks Tim Townsend, Wayne Faucher, Mark Irwin, Victor Olazaba & Al Vey

Colors Chris Bachalo & Rain Beredo

I could go for more covers of one character with multiple costumes.  That is an awesome gimmick!

We get Uncanny back on track with this issue, hopefully!

The Xavier School, Location, secret.  Today.  Scott comes outside and sees his brother, Havok, standing about.  Havok’s face is all scarred from AXIS.  One of maybe three consequences from that event. They hug, which is nice to see.  The base is empty.

Three hours ago.  Scott is breaking the news that the Jean Grey School is going to be taking the students.  No one wants to go, why would they?  They have been told for months how horrible that school is and the teaching staff.  Hijack seems to be taking this the hardest.  It is simply nice to be reading about the students again.

Uncanny X-Men V3 32 Magik 1

Scott has decided to turn himself over to the authorites, due to his actions that lead to Xavier’s death.  Mostly, that Scott told Xavier to walk away and Xavier, instead, chose to keep playing with fire.  I imagine the authorities are going to do a quick Google search and see that Xavier has ‘died’ at least four times and shrug their shoulders.

This is the first Magik has heard about this part of the plan.

Goldballs loses control of his balls and slaps them against Scott’s face.

Now.  Havok is taking a nap and Scott is in the room, doing some packing.  This wakes up Alex, who has been sleeping for fourteen years.  Apparently this happens a lot, after a major super-power event, which is as decent of a name for crossovers, in-universe.  Poor Scott, all that he owns, can fit into a few bags and boxes.

Havok wants to tag along with Cyclops.  Cyclops is trying to take back the public perception of him.  Xavier leaving everything to Cyclops, blew his mind.  He wasn’t the guy’s son, he actually had one of those (before Legion wrote himself out of continuity) and Cyclops killed his adopted father.

I like Scott’s answers to Alex’s “what’s wrong with us?”  Parents captured and mother killed by aliens.  They had powers in a world that hates and fears them.

Then.  Scott is knocked out by Goldball’s balls.

Uncanny X-Men V3 32 Kitty Magik 1

Kitty wants all of this tomfoolery to just stop.  Magik wants Kitty to come with her, Kitty just got back from space with her boyfriend.  So is this Post-Black Vortex?  Kitty wants a shower but Illyana grabs her arm and the two ladies are off to what will most likely be my favorite arc of this series!

Emma tells Triage to heal Scott.  Just let the guy take a tad nap.

Emma isn’t going to the Jean Grey School, why would she, she should totally go back to the Hellfire Club.  Someone should make that group, important again.

Now.  Alex asks the question most of us had this entire volume, when is this Revolution going to start?  I like how Bachalo clearly doesn’t want to draw Alex’s scarred face, so he keeps picking angles that only hint at his left side.

Then.  Emma and Scott are finally have the conversation they should have had prior to this volume.  Their break up has never really been addressed.  Emma apparently asked Scott about the revolution too.

Nothing Cyclops did, has ever worked, in terms of mutant and human relations.  The X-Men fought for the dumb flatscans and they were feared.  They fought alongside them, and mutant children died.  They moved to an island and it was attacked in full force.  All Cyclops had, was threats.

Emma was willing to start over with Scott, she knew all of his motivations already.  Emma implies that she is willing to get back with him, but he tells her that he wouldn’t touch her with Namor’s trident.  Which goes to show how much he paid attention to Namor.  Why did they break up?  Was that ever really addressed?  They sort of where together under Kieron Gillen and Bendis had them broken up by the time his first issue came along.

Emma diamond forms up.  Emma has had full use of her powers for a while now.  He keeps wanting to know when her powers came back, and she keeps talking about how much she has been on his side.  I really did enjoy the Emma Scott relationship.  She has let Scott in like none before him, and they were the best of teams.

Alex is way to excited about Emma being out of Scott’s life.

People made a big deal of last issue’s cover, with Havok and Cyclops fighting, not being reflective of that issue but it isn’t reflective of this issue too.  It should have been them hugging but I guess that would have tipped the emotion of the issue.

Alex has a plan to get Scott back on track.  Scott takes a guess that it is a, Summers Brothers Pizza Parlor, and Alex wishes that was what he came up with.  There is a What If, I sort of what to read!

Next issue, Monsters!  Which has Magik and Shadowcat, being Demon Hunters, which was hinted at way back in All New X-Men 25!  The only hinted at story that people wanted to see and now it comes!  I hope it isn’t disappointing nor just one issue.  I also wish that Lockheed will be involved!  I’ms o excited!

If you know any others, let me know!  It doesn’t necessarily have to be X-Men related.

Wolverines 12

Writer Ray Fawkes

Artist Ario Anindito

Colorist Matthew Wilson

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Wolverines 12 Ogun 1

The Changeling.  Deathstrike’s Chambers, So the fight has moved from Shogun’s room to Lady Deathstrike’s room.  Ogun is trash talking Shogun, so he must know what is happening here.  Ogun reveals that he and Lady Deathstrike have a partnership, built around the idea to erase Sharp.

Wolverines 12 Shogun Mention 1

Fang wants to speak to Shogun.  Mystique wants Junk to set up the spectral disruptors, which one would think she would have a code word for that, so that she wouldn’t tip her hand.  Junk does so and now Fang is distracted.  Mystique has a gun, that Reed found a similar one in the Negative Zone but this gun, she got from AIM.  The gun shoots across universes, so now she can destroy the gland that contains Fang’s soul.  X23 doesn’t want Mystique to succeed but Daken holds her back.  Which is awkward, as he only has the one arm, how much leverage is he really holding over her?

Wolverines 12 Ogun 3

While this fight is going on, Lady Deathstrike is pushing Shogun closer to death.  Ogun prepares to make his move, while Fang is losing a fight to Sabretooth.

Wolverines 12 Ogun 4

Fang teleports himself and Shogun away.  Mystique and Lady Deathstrike are both upset with this turn of events.  Mystique is sure that the gland was hit so Fang is truly vulnerable.

Wolverines 12 Ogun 5

Galaxy Desginate NGC 4945.  An Unnamed Planet.  Ogun is distracted by the new environment but decides to soldier on.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 1

Fang grabs him by the head.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 2

Sharp is back in control again and now he can’t hear Ogun’s voice.  Fang shut Ogun down!  Sharp takes responsibility for Logan’s death.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 3

Shogun (I will continue using that name) recognizes that Fang is not at full strength.  Fang falls over but he has enough energy to send Shogun back to Earth or to keep him on the planet.  Which makes no sense, as the second option, requires no energy at all.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 4

Sharp retells the ending of Death of Wolverine 4, that he was present for.  Sharp had a brief . . . fight, seems to be too generous of a term, with Wolverine.  It was mostly a delay tactic.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 5

Wolverine stopped fighting and just stared down Sharp.  I like seeing Proto-Sharp, as I could barely remember his first costume design.  Sharp kept fighting but one counter later, he was knocked out. Sharp woke up to the lab destroyed, he suspects that Cornelius is dead but he isn’t.  Marvel Database confirms that Cornelius dies but I thought he got away on the helicopter.  I guess I should reread that issue.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 6

Fang wishes he was there for all of that.  Instead of thanking Fang for burying Ogun, he starts fighting him.  Probably as he suspects that Fang plans on resetting him so that he and Ogun are sharing the same body.  I imagine that Fang would have listen to the request to keep him the same.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 7

Fang fights back, revenge was never what Wolverine was about – but I recall at least ten stories where that was all Wolverine was about.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 8

Fang sends Sharp back to Earth.

Wolverines 12 Shogun 9

Lady Deathstrike wants to know where Shogun is, as he teleports back in front of everybody.  Shogun tells the gathered villains that Fang is done with them all.  Lady Deathstrike wants to know who is in charge of the body, but it is Sharp.

Barcelona, Spain.  Fantomelle is looking over her Wolverine treasures and sees Fang’s costume.  She isn’t sure how it got into her room.  Culpepper brings in another costume but I don’t recognize it.  They are putting everything in boxes as their client is on their way.

Issue ends with the client being . . . Deadpool!  I like how fans could tell it was him, from the previous two pages, with the yellow dialogue balloons.

Deadpool recognizes the costume but I still don’t.  The color scheme, more orange than yellow with blue stripes, does look familiar.  Deadpool wants to be the next Wolverine.

Year of the Artist, Day 162: Paul Smith, Part 4 – X-Men Unlimited #43

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2014/06/11/year-of-the-artist-day-162-paul-smith-part-4-x-men-unlimited-43

I had originally meant to post this first, before my review of X-Men Unlimited 43, but these things happen.

As I commented over there :

Aw, the solo Lockheed issue that was meant to explain where Lockheed was during his absence from Excalibur 125 and Kitty’s return to the X-Men in Uncanny 360. There is a hint that Lockheed believes Kitty is dead (or missing) and Kitty never mentions Lockheed – like, at all! – so we are suppose to assume that she believes he is missing and / or dead from this unexplained story.

Yet, this story – at most – can only take place over a few weeks and not the months she spends with the X-Men.

That little detail has always ruin this solo Lockheed story for me. But the story itself, I really like. Lockheed, being drawn by his co-creator, Paul Smith, in a cute done in one (half) fashion.

I would be cool if we were treated to more adventures of Lockheed as what is he up to when he isn’t with the X-Men all of those times?

I just find issue with the placement of continuity but that isn’t the creative team’s fault so I try to still enjoy the story on its own.

Since I typed all of this on my own, I feel okay with just copying and pasting it here.

I’m sure at the time I read this, which would have been when it was originally printed – which it is cover dated April 2003 – I wouldn’t have recognize it as being THE Paul Smith, Lockheed’s co-creator, on art duties.

Stephen Grant wrote the story.

The issue itself also has a New Mutants story in it.  Magik is there in a flashback sequence, so I will be reviewing both stories when I do the review for the issue proper.

That story is done by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz.

Wolverines 11

Writer Charles Soule

Artist Ariela Kristantina

Colorist Sonia Oback

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Knowhere.  Years Ago.  Fang is telling X23 a story of when Wolverine got drunk, for once.  There is a moment when Wolverine, who is so drunk, that he snikted himself, but I’m not sure how that is even possible.  The claws come out of the base of his hands, which is how Daken’s one claw comes out.  They should always pop out of his back of his hands.  But whatever, it is a fun scene.

Knowhere.  Now.  X23 doesn’t believe that story, and neither do I.  Fang tires to go back and forth on referring to her as Laura or X23.  I had that problem (I still do) with addressing my in-laws as either Leslie and Dennis or Mr. and Mrs. Brannman.  Now, I just try to make clear eye contact or get their attention first.  He decides on, Laura.  Apparently, Wolverine always referred to her as, Laura, so he will honor that.  That must have been Logan’s rule, when not in her presence.

Fang isn’t here to torture Laura (I guess I will call her that, as well) like he did to Daken and Sabretooth.  Wolverine always liked her.

Fang recites a part of Uncanny X-Men 107 & 108, which I don’t own as they predate Uncanny X-Men 129.  Wolverine stole Fang’s costume, as his was pretty torn and tattered.  Laura doesn’t mention how she wore the costume, for some time, starting with Uncanny X-Men 451.  Which I don’t own but I do own 460, and she is still wearing that costume.  Where she gets a lady version of Fang’s costume, I don’t believe has ever been explained.  After that, House of M happens, and then the titles bounce around for a while until Ed Brubaker takes the title to Shi’ar space and it is unreadable for a year.

Fang explains how he wasn’t killed by the Brood.  He was, but the Lupak race are constantly born again as clones but with the memories of the previous model.  This hits close to Laura, as she is a clone.

The Changling.  Mystique explains the situation.  They can’t hide from Fang, so they have to kill him, before he can kill them.  Mystique hates this delay, as she has things to do.  This is issue eleven of a now, fifteen issue series, so there isn’t any time to waste.  Except for the all Deadpool issue that is coming.

Junk feels over his head, he isn’t Neuro, so all of this data that he has now on Fang, confuses him.  Mystique looks over the data, and dismisses Junk.

Wolverines 11 Ogun 1

Crew Deck.  Shogun’s Chamber.  Lady Deathstrike is ready to kill Shogun but Ogun wants her to wait.  Ogun has control over Shogun’s mouth, when he is sleeping.  He needs Lady Deathstrike to bring Shogun to the brink of death, so that he can take over the weak body.

Fang and Wolverine didn’t always get together once a year, they both had busy lives.  Wolverine had his adamantium ripped out by Magneto while Fang was busy having a family.  Wolverine joined Avengers, and Fang was busy with the Imperial Guard.

Laura has seen Wolverine’s statue corpse and Fang has also seen it, in the care of the X-Men, and he has paid his respects.  Fang is quasi-trying to figure out Wolverine’s final days.

Fang has tricked Laura, as he has been drinking something with a intensified trigger scent, which I forgot she had that as part of her story.  So Fang just really wants a fight.

Wolverines 11 Shogun 1

Lady Deathstrike slaps Shogun awake.  He doesn’t want to wake up to a fight but she is bored.

Colorado Rockies.  Fantomelle and Culpepper have stolen a pair of Wolverine’s dog tags.  Dogtagger, that’s who she stole it from – and he had thousands of them, but I believe that is the only one that was Wolverine’s – he wants it back and promises to not rest until he does.

Barcelona, Spain.  Later.  We see their home base, and she has three costumes – a classic yellow and blue, an X-Force (like from the cover) and another yellow and blue, maybe it is his Cassaday Astonishing X-Men costume?  There is a pair of claw gloves and a pair of towels?

Okay, I misread the scene with Fang and Laura.  He just had the glass of the trigger scent.  Laura is upset as that is the only thing that makes her into an animal.  Fang’s original goal was to have her drink it and set loose on Mystique’s team.

Now Laura and Fang are fighting in the bar.  What changed his mind was that Laura had dyed some of her hair with yellow and blue.  He mostly just wants to know why she is on a team full of monsters that Wolverine hates.

Wolverines 11 Shogun mention

She mentions that Shogun and Junk have code words.  Fang dismisses the idea of code words, but they are real threats, Shogun could kill her with a single word.  Fang throws some pills at her, which I’m not sure what they contain.  Laura tells Fang that Shogun was one of the last people to see Wolverine alive.  Fang wasn’t even looking to speak with Shogun.

Mystique is finishing telling the team, what is the plan.  Junk is hoping to stay out of it, as he isn’t on Fang’s radar.  Daken tells Mystique that once you go on an adventure with Fang, that’s all he wants.  Mystique isn’t so sure about that.  Mystique wants to destroy Fang, which of course, is when he returns with Laura and his interest has been piqued.  This, naturally, ends the issue.

X-Men Unlimited Volume One Issue 43

X-Men Unlimited Volume One Issue 43

Cover Dated April 2003

I will be reviewing both stories so I’ll be breaking this up over the two.  One point of interest is that both stories have sentences in the very beginning that annoyed me and sort of tainted the rest of the story.  I’ll get to those when we get there.

Keepsake

Writer Chris Claremont

Artist Bill Sienkiewicz

Colors Jose Villarubia

Letters Randy Gentile

A New Mutants tale brought to us by one of the best creative teams from that title!

This story opens with Sunspot watching a news story about a mugging that two young ladies were injured during.  Roberto recognizes one of them as his dear friend, Rahne.

Then in typical ABC’s Revenge fashion, we cut back to hours ago.  My problem with this story is that it appears that this is suppose to take place sometime in the pass, as Rahne is in a school girl uniform, on a class trip to a museum.  How old is she suppose to be here?  By the end of the first New Mutants volume, the members of the team would have been well done and out of high school age.

Do colleges require uniforms?  I doubt it but later in the story, the team talks about how it has been a while since they all got together as they disbanded a while ago.

Both of these stories have weird continuity quirks that sort of take me out of the story and I’m not able to enjoy them as much.  That was at the time, now it just seems annoying but if this was the first time I read it, I may have the problem but move on quickly as it is an eleven year old comic.

So Rahne is telling her school friend about her necklace.  How it was given to her by the first king of Scotland, Robert the Bruce, as the team time traveled to that era in New Mutants Volume Issue 47.

The mugger overhears how the necklace is important and attacks the ladies and runs off with the necklace.

Dani, as a good friend, is watching over Rahne in the hospital.  The doctor doesn’t want Rahne to leave but Rahne has the man’s scent and so the two soulmates are on a hunt.

There is an awkward moment when Rahne asks if Dani can still sense all of her thoughts, which seems to be straight out of a fan fic.

There was a police officer in the room as well, I suppose taking Rahne’s statement.  He knows they were both students of the ‘mutie school’ which seems racist to me.

Rahne tracks the man down to a club.  He runs out of the club and Dani shoots him with one her physic arrows.  He tries to stumble to his car and Cannonball demolishes it.  Besides Karma, we have the original New Mutants all present and accounted for.

The man confesses to have already gone to a pawnshop.  Once again, Rahne hugs Sam, as it has been a while.

Karma does show up, so now everyone is accounted for.  She gets the name of the dealer that the pawnshop owner dealt with.

The team goes to Long Island and they see that Roberto is already in negotiations with Trigorin for the necklace.  Trigorin is the head of the Odessa mafia.

Later at Harry’s Hideaway, the five New Mutants are able to finally hang out together.  Rahne shows that in the back of her necklace, she has a picture of the entire team (minus Doug – for some reason).  So Magik shows up on the cover and in this picture.  Then again on the next page as the team remembers how awesome it was being a New Mutant.

Sam asks Roberto about how comfortable he was with the head of a mafia.  Roberto throws it back at Sam and Dani that they haven’t been angels their entire lives either.  As Sam and his X-Force were practically terrorists at one point and Dani was undercover in the MLF on behalf of SHIELD.

Roberto also confesses to some daddy issues, everyone nods their heads as that is pretty obvious.

Dani tries to change the subject.

Rahne proposes a toast, in honor of her late foster mother, Moira MacTaggert, who died in the Dreams End crossover at the hands of Mystique.

Pretty decent story, and if this wasn’t during Sienkiewicz’ heavy ink phase, I may enjoy it more but it just harkens back to when he was inking Sal Buscema’s pencils in Spectacular Spider-Man.  I would enjoy it more with a lighter brush.

For instance, in Spectacular Spider-Man 220, Web of Death Part 2, wherein Mary Jane tells Peter that she is pregnant.  A pretty key milestone issue and yet, it is as dark and hard to read as it gets!

Lockheed, the Dragon

Story Stephen Grant

Artist Paul Smith

Colors Jeromy Cox

Lettering Randy Gentile

A Lockheed story brought to us by one of his co-creators!

This one, I really enjoy but Grant (or one of the editors, perhaps? which would have been CB Cebulski) tries to give it some place in history.  But that place in history is beyond me.

Story opens, months ago, north of England.  Poor Lockheed is being chased by some jerks and their dumb dogs.  Lockheed, sort of narrates the issue, or at least, the captions are from his point of view but the captions refer to him as Lockheed so it isn’t his inner thoughts.

We get the caption that pretty much states that its been months since he has been alone.  Some time ago, there was a battle and Lockheed and Kitty got separated and now he suspects she is dead.

One imagines that Kitty suspects he is dead too but when the heck would this ‘battle’ have taken place?

The very last horrah for Excalibur, maybe?  As Kitty goes from Excalibur 125 (when that team disbands) to Uncanny X-Men 360 / X-Men 80 in the very same publishing month of – October 1998.

So this comic came out in April 2003.  Prior to this, Lockheed appeared in the backup story – along with Kitty – when she is attending the University of Chicago – and about to kick off the Mekanix miniseries.

I’m getting all of these dates from the Lockheed chronological listing of appearances from comicbookdb.com –

http://comicbookdb.com/character_chron.php?ID=1762

X-Men Unlimited 35 doesn’t count as it is an untold X-Men story.

X-Men Unlimited 38, November 2002, Kitty is celebrating the anniversary of Colossus’ death.  Lockheed is there and Nightcrawler checks in with her.  It is awesome!  The story takes place in Chicago, as well.  Which I like that she had some ‘real time’ at that university.

Now we have come to this issue, so poor Lockheed is getting an appearance once a year.  Which is horrible!

He shows up in the final issue of X-Treme X-Men, 46, in June 2004, the team disbands.

Then he and Kitty make an appearance in both Uncanny X-Men 444 / X-Men 157 the next month – July 2004.

So when does this short story take place?  Between the seven years of Excalibur 125 and this issue?  It has to take place before 2001’s X-Treme X-Men annual (retroactively) as at the end of this issue (spoilers!) Lockheed is told that Kitty is alive and in Chicago.

So it could have only been in a four year time frame but the story itself can barely take place over a few months – so even that doesn’t explain what he does in all that time.  I guess it would take him a while to get his little self over the Atlantic Ocean and to Chicago from England but it wouldn’t take years!

Plus, this entire time – Kitty isn’t even talking about her dear friend, Lockheed.  It never comes up.  Which is heartbreaking as a Lockheed fan.

I’m pretty sure I first became a Lockheed fan, next a Kitty Pryde fan and finally, a Paul Smith fan – once I got those origin issues and first appearances of the purple cat-sized space alien that resembles a dragon.

So, that was the very first page of this story and I’m already trying to make sense of the entire thing.

But let’s move on like I have to do when I take a breath.  It really is a shame that Lockheed is barely in comics – that’s what I’m getting at.

X-Men Unlimited 43 Lockheed 1

Lockheed is on the run, he doesn’t want to hurt the humans as that isn’t what Kitty would want.  He spits hot fire at them, just to scare them off.

Two young girls come to his rescue, Martina and Regina Wolcroft.  They pick him up and we see how hurt he really is.  One of his wings has a clear hole in it!  No wonder he hasn’t gotten to America yet!?!  I imagine he could get there, and the X-Men would welcome him home.  If Kitty was alive (which she is) they would call her and she would pick him up.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a phone or connections with SWORD – just yet.

I do like how the story is presented from here on.  The sisters are clearly terrors to this small town.  We only get a hint of that here when they turn the hunters’ bullets into butterflies and hint at doing more.  But here, as a reader, I like them as they are about to take care of a wounded Lockheed.

X-Men Unlimited 43 Lockheed 2

They take him home and start caring for him, as if he is a cat.  Their mother comes in, not sure if she wants a dragon in the house.  Here, they threaten her with a storm cloud and she hurries away.  So clearly they torment her all the time.  Also, they are witches.  Also, something that rhymes with witch.

The sisters decide what they should feed him.  It can’t be water, he is a dragon.  They go and search for petrol and charcoal.  Lockheed doesn’t make a face of disgust so hopefully he is able to digest petrol and charcoal!

The sisters take him to school, and he is sitting as comfortably as he can in there.

X-Men Unlimited 43 Lockheed 3

From his hiding place, he can tell that people seem to be kind around them and not rude to each other.  Of course, if he could see the looks on people’s faces – he would know there was fear as well.

He does sense tension around him but once the sisters are by themselves, that tension is gone.

Then we meet Thorne, the girls’ arch nemesis.  By now, that should tell us the reader that she is in fact, a good person.  Lockheed doesn’t get to see that, through the bag.

One day, in the grocery store, the girls come across this boy that they don’t care for.  They decide to pull a prank on him, and put an apple into his pocket.  They start shouting that he is stealing and he protests – naturally.

Lockheed doesn’t like the idea of thieves and cuts a slight hole in the bag and spits a flame at the boy.  The boy falls over and the store owner comes to see what the commotion is all about.

X-Men Unlimited 43 Lockheed 4

The store owner finds the apple, the boy keeps protesting that he wasn’t trying to steal it.  The girls tire of this and turn the apple into a rat.  Then all the apples turn into rats.  Which is bad, but then the worst happens – all the rats become a giant rat!  Even worst … they still have tiny rat hands!  It is gross.

Turns out, it is Thorne who turn the rats into a giant rat.  Apparently, she has the ability to undo any spell that the sisters can cast.  Which is a good thing.

Regina challenges Thorne to a duel as she wants to use Lockheed as a weapon and since he isn’t one of their creations, Thorne will be powerless against him.

Once outside, Martina throws some flowers up in the air, casts a spell and out of the smoke, Lockheed comes at Thorne.  Thorne is impress that they were able to create a dragon out of smoke and then is a tad scared when her go-to-undo spell doesn’t work.

Lockheed spits hot fire at Thorne, instead of running away, she tells him he doesn’t want to hurt her.

The girls start yelling at him to keep up the attack.  Thorne just wants to know his name.

Lockheed sees similarities with Thorne and Kitty and while he is debating who is friendly, the sisters start throwing rocks at him.    Which, one really shouldn’t do to anyone but especially not to Lockheed.

Thorne learns his name is Lockheed, while he finds the rock throwing to be an unforgivable act of betrayal.

X-Men Unlimited 43 Lockheed 5

He turns his flame onto the sisters and they run away.

Thorne tells him that Kitty is now living in Chicago and she is under the impression that he was dead as well.

Thorne, with one touch, heals Lockheed’s broken wing.

Story ends with Lockheed flying towards America.

I would really like to know and see the story that lead to these two great friends thinking the other one is dead.  It has to be a story that ends with an explosion that sets them off in different courses.  Maybe they both are unconscious and people come to their aid and thus, the one can’t inquire about the other.

The story would also have to take place in Northern England, so it might be an untold tale of Excalibur.  Thus, Kurt nor Colossus ask Kitty about where Lockheed is, as they already know that they lost him.  Then Kurt told Storm, Rogue and Wolverine and now those two know not to ask Kitty about it.

If Marrow knew about it, she would harp on it all the time to make Kitty feel sad.

Wolverines 10

Wolverines 10

Writer Ray Fawkes

Artist Jonathan Marks

Colorist Lee Loughridge

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Fang has taken Sabretooth to outer space, he is replacing Wolverine on what would have been their annual trip.

65 Lightyears Outside Galaxy.  Designate GRB 0904298.  They are going to storm a pirate fleet flagship.  The alien race is known as, the J’Grajj Raiders.  Over the past two hundred years, they have enslaved, mutilated and murdered trillions of sentient beings.  The J’Grajj have like an octopus for a head with three rows of eyes and humanoid bodies.  Sabretooth takes a few of them out, rather easily.

65 Miles Outside Natal, Brazil.  Fantomelle and her fox, Culpepper, are onto another relic or artifact of Wolverine, someone is hiring them to gather all of these modern treasures.  Fantomelle has to fight off a robot.

In space.  The translator finally kicks in so the J’Grajj leader can speak English.  They have never seen anyone from Earth before.  The leader explains that their race is no longer the butchers that they were once known as.  They have a new religion, Ing’tajj.  They are more enlighten.  I love the examples of how they are have changed.  They no longer devour limbs, just to hear folks scream.  No longer do they main and enslave whole races, just to infect them with diseases that will slowly kill them, to the ones that they sell these poor folk to.  Instead, now, they simply exterminate everything quickly and painlessly.  Their weapons have advanced to the point where they can commit genocide in a single breath.

Sabretooth starts killing the leader, whose last reaction (and is so awesome) is to believe that the translator is broken.  He tries to clarify, that they simply cleanses races or eliminate speices or kill them.  So the translator works just fine.

Fang explains what Sabretooth suspects (and I completely misssed) that the J’Grajj are pretty weak, so those they conquer must be even weaker, which must disgust the old Sabretooth, who still exists somewhere in new Creed’s mind.

Wolverines 10 Shogun 1

Tautona Gold Mine.  Two Miles Beneath the Surface.  Shogun and Lady Deathstrike are sparring.  She is coming at him hard, she yearns for him, as this is some intense foreplay.  This is the type of relationship that Frank Miller would be proud to read.

Wolverines 10 Shogun 2

Junk interrupts this session, to ask for some help, as Mystique has him doing research on Fang.

Lady Deathstrike corrects her earlier statement, they are not playing cat and mouse.  They are playing the frog and the scorpion.  Shogun brought the villains together and he must know that one of them will eventually kill him.  She assures him that it won’t be her.

In Space.  Fang tells Sabretooth how he was one of Logan’s favorite subjects (to talk about, I believe).  How the first forty or fifty years, Sabretooth was a real pain in Logan’s arse.  How Victor Creed tried to kill Wolverine, every year, on his suspected birthday.  As later, Melita would discover Logan’s real birthday.  Or rather, James Howlett’s birthday.  This occurred in Wolverine Volume Three Issue 5.1.  Which was a fun issue, Kitty wasn’t at the birthday party, which is pretty silly, I think.

Fang continues to pour salt on the wound.  Wolverine grew bored and tired of Sabretooth.  He knew that Creed would never actually kill him, he was only a bully.

Fang knows that Sabretooth didn’t kill Wolverine.  Creed did rip out his eye (just like what happened to Daken) but Lady Deathstrike stopped him from finishing Wolverine.

During this conversation, Fang has been setting up the weapons to fire upon the rest of the J’Grajj fleet.  Sabretooth doesn’t want to kill anymore but gives the okay, after being asked too many times.  Fang orders the weapons to fire and Sabretooth changes his mind, too late.  The J’Grajj are down to just a few ships now.

Fang drops Sabretooth off and wants another person for another adventure.  Once again, X23 offers herself.  Fang has a special mission for X23, who he likes to call, Laura.  As Fang teleports the two of them away, X23 places a nano-disk on Fang and now Junk knwos what makes Fang vulnerable, as the issue ends.

One of my favorite aspects of Comics Should Be Good is that someone is doing a 365 Days of … list.

Greg Burgas has been doing Day of the Artist and during the week of June 9, 2014 – it was Paul Smith’s run.

For the Uncanny X-Men spotlight, Mr. Burgas went with Uncanny X-Men 173 and did an excellent write up and posted some amazing scans!

Here is the link to his amazing archive that he has amassed already! :

Wolverines 9

Wolverines 9

Writer Charles Soule

Penciler Peter Nguyen

Inker Derek Fridolfs

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Colorist John Kalisz

Jotuunheim.  Domain of the Frost Giants.  Fang has chosen Daken to be the first person to have an adventure with him.  Daken does not want to fight Frost Giants, as he is missing an arm, an eye and his healing factor.  Fang expresses how much Wolverine appreciated guys like – Beast, Iron Fist and Daredevil – as they were regular dudes, with high athletic abilities but no healing factor.  Daken points out that they all had at least two arms.

Fang tells a Frost Giant, Bunduk, that Daken is his long lost father, who abandoned Bunduk’s mother, years ago.  Bunduk starts trying to kill Daken, and Daken keeps trying to get away him.  I’m not sure why Dunduk suspects a tiny fella is his father, but that is the joke of the issue.  Dunduk’s mother had to work in the mines, under the volcano, and risked melting – every single day.

Wolverines 9 Ogun 1

The Changeling.  Shogun and Lady Deathstrike have had sex and Shogun’s mind has been blown.  Ogun has been on this ride before but he also had a good time.  Shogun is impressed that Lady Deathstrike’s fingers didn’t get in the way, everything worked as it should.  I thought she could retract her claws but chooses not to.

Lady Deathstrike recognizes some of Shogun’s sweet moves, as a former lover.  He wears the mask of Ogun, so she is probably just trying to get an official answer.  Though, one would think she would ask prior to the sweet love making.  I didn’t even know that Lady Deathstrike and Ogun had a history together, it was vaguely hinted at during Death of Wolverine.

Shogun calls her, Lady Deathstrike, and would like to know her real name, as now that they are intimates.  I wouldn’t even have been able to guess that her name is, Yuriko Oyama.  That does remind me of the confusing names of Yuriko and Yukio, Wolverine’s friend from Japan, who is also Storm’s 80s inspiration.

Wolverines 9 Ogun 2

I like how smitten Shogun (should I be calling him Sharp, while also discussing Ogun?) is with Yuriko.  Shogun explains how Ogun is in his head, ever since Death of Wolverine 4.

In the middle panel, is that the first we’ve officially seen Sharp’s face?  At the end of Weapon X Program 1, it was implied he looked like a blonde Wolverine.

Prior to Ogun, Sharp was good at firearms but all of his hand-to-hand has been Ogun influenced.

Jotunheim.  Fang is still trying to encourage Bunduk to kill Daken.  If he had a father in his life, he may have been able to continue relationships with lady frost giants, Frost Giantesses.

Fang refers to Wolverine as “your dad” to Daken, and he pops his claws in rage.  He starts attacking poor Bunduk.

Madripoor.  Fantomelle and her fox, Culpepper, are trying to steal one of Patch’s . . . patches.  Fantomelle tries to perfect her flirting skills, but she’s only been alive for three weeks, so she needs a lot more practice. Culpepper steals the patch and they take off, being chased by nearly everybody.

Meanwhile.  Daken is close to killing Bunduk, Fang puts a stop to the fight.  Fang offers to go have a beer with Daken.  Poor Daken, he can’t open a can of beer with only the one hand.  Somehow, Fang is able to give him his left arm and eye back but they are made of flame or something like that.

Wolverines 9 Kitty Pryde Reference

For anyone who is buying all of Kitty’s appearances, including mentions, this is the issue you should have bought!

Fang calls him, your dad, one too many times and Daken feels the need to explain that Logan was never ‘his dad.’

Fang mentions how much Logan liked to mentor the young ladies – Kitty Pryde, Jubilee and Armor.  Daken understands why he didn’t have that relationship, he was born in 1946, so he wasn’t a boy when he finally met Logan.

Fang comes out and says that Logan always felt that Daken was, a monster.  An ugly thing.  Logan felt relief when he drowned Daken, back in Uncanny X-Force 34.  Which I won’t review as my Uncanny X-Force run stops at 31.

Fang takes back Daken’s temporary arm and eye.  Fang continues putting dirt on an open wound and tells Daken that Logan hates all of the Paradise folks, except for X23.  Fang wants to make all of the villains’ lives miserable.

South Africa.  The Tautona Gold Mine.  Two Miles Deep.  Mystique has hidden the ship, to try to get away from Fang’s plan.  Fang teleports right in, so that was silly.  X23 wants Fan to leave Daken alone.  Fang wants to take Sabretooth next, on an adventure.

Wolverines 9 Ogun 3

Issue ends with Shogun and Yuriko chatting.  She likes the idea of reuniting with Ogun.  Shogun tries to explain that Ogun is only a voice in his head, it isn’t like he and Ogun are a team, making this relationship a complicated threesome.  I suppose someone had to fully state it, good job, Soule.

Shogun goes to sleep and once he does, Ogun is able to speak for himself – which is a pretty cool twist.  I imagine he has an accent when Ogun speaks, and Lady Deathstrike is all for killing Sharp.
