Uncanny X-Men V3 30

Writer Brian Michael Bendis

Pencils Chris Bachalo

Inks Tim Townsend, Mark Irwin, Jaime Mendoza, Victor Olazaba & Al Vey

Colors Chris Bachalo & Antonio Fabela

Cover by Kris Anka, though he isn’t credited anywhere besides his own signature on the cover.  I like how it is a similar concept to issue 15 of this volume.  It also features all of the X-Ladies of the title, which Kitty is the only one who is missing from this one.  Luckily, not from this issue.

 Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Magik 1

Newberry, South Carolina.  Maria Hill wants the soldiers to confirm what they just said.

Devil’s Tower.  The soldiers are confirming three dead.  Poor Magik’s head garb . . . thingies are still on her head.  I hope someone picks up the Eye of Agamotto as Doctor Strange is going to want that back.

Maria Hill wants a triple confirmation, she isn’t sure if she is about to be made a hero or mutant kind’s worst enemy.

Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.  Years Ago.  Xavier doesn’t seem to be embarrassed that he is both wearing a green bathroom by the pool and that his Original Five X-Men, are not to be found.  Tempus tries to walk a very thin line of not wanting to review too much.  She is there to get Xavier to change his approach to Matthew Malloy.  Xavier hasn’t really read her mind, only got her name and that he shouldn’t pry too much.

Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Shadowcat 1

Jean Grey School.  Today.  The X-Men don’t know about poor Scott and Illyana being dead – yet.  Beast explains what they all already to know, that Scott wants to recruit Matty M.

Storm is about to talk, and Kitty wants to know what she was about to say when Beast gets a phone call.

Look how cute Doop is at that desk, just trying to follow along with the silliness.

Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Shadowcat 2

It isn’t a phone call but his portable Cerebro going off.  The world has lost two very strong and long lasting energy signatures – Cyclops and Magik.

The Black Vortex double page ad is shown again.  It isn’t until I’ve seen it again that I noticed that Howard the Duck may appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 24.  With how ladies are all draped over Quill, I imagine this is only a fun concept cover.

Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.  Years Ago.  Xavier resists reading Tempus’ mind, as he is super worried about his legacy being upended.  She really wants him to rethink his approach to Malloy.  Xavier figures out that he isn’t alive in the future.

Devil’s Tower.  Now.  One guy wants to bag and tag the skeletons but another instructs that Maria Hill wants nothing to be touched.  The first guy, I wish they had names, thinks that there really is no difference between her and Nick Fury.  The second guy has the sad duty of explaining that everything that they say is recorded and heard – while they are wearing their armors.

Malloy rebuilds himself, which freaks out the SHIELD soldiers.  They open fire and he rebuilds himself again.

Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Magik 2

Matty M is tired of all of these death attempts and erases the SHIELD agents.  He tries to bring back Magik and Cyclops, but besides making their skeletons dance for him – they are not brought back to life.

I like Matt realizing how far his life has gone in 24 hours, he is upset that he has limits – he can’t bring back the dead, that isn’t him.  He is able to bring his body to full health.  He vows to avenge Cyclops.

Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.  Years Ago.  I like how Tempus respects and fears Cyclops and Xavier isn’t thrilled that Scott sounds more like Magneto.

I really like the way Bachalo shows him reading Tempus’ mind.  The beginning panel shows Xavier’s side of his face on the left and Tempus’ face on the right.  It ends with Tempus’ face on the left side of the panel and Xavier’s on the right – which is a great way to show that.

Xavier will not kill Malloy and he is getting angry that Tempus has ruined his future and his confidence.  Xavier hints at what many think he will do with the Original X-Men when they come back, that he will simply mind wipe them and act like their months long adventure never happened.  Though with Secret Wars 2015 happening, that whole situation isn’t really going to matter.

How great is Tempus calling on Xavier’s one true status quo.  Teach one thing and then disregard that when it becomes inconvenient.

Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Shadowcat 3

Jean Grey School.  Today.  Emma leaves the school, as her ex-boyfriend is dead.  Rachel wants to force her to take a chill pill, so those two are clearly not friends.

Man, I love Kitty thinking of Magik – someone has to think of her.  She isn’t an also ran.

Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Shadowcat 4

Emma shouts, AAGGH! and everyone is forced to repeat it as her mental powers are great.  Why is Quentin Quire shirtless with Glob and Doop?  In what way can Thanos be right?  That Death is one special type of lady?

Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Shadowcat 5

The X-Men are trying to get themselves back on their feet.

Matty M is naked in front of Emma, no easy feat to do.  Bachalo doesn’t do Matty M any favors with how little and thin those lightning bolts are.

I like Bendis handling that Emma doesn’t know who this guy is.  I doubt Storm has got to describing him to the team.

Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Shadowcat 6

I don’t get why him being there when Scott died justifies punching him in the face.  At least she wasn’t diamond form up.  He responds by breaking her neck, which is super harsh!

Uncanny X-Men V3 30 Shadowcat 7

No one is happy with Matthew Malloy, who tries to explain that he can’t undo what he just did.

The New Xavier School.  Today.  Goldballs wants to know if anyone has seen Tempus.  Hijack wants to know what is going on, none of the grown ups are around to explain anything.  I like Bendis trying to remind us that the All New X-Men in the Ultimate Universe adventure is happening at the same time.  Apparently, Cyclops only owns the one plane.

The Cuckoos lose their respected minds, as they sense Emma’s death.  Good on the Marketing Department not putting one of those “One of These Mutants Dies This Issue” caption on the cover.  Nice restraint!

Issue ends with Tempus bringing Xavier to the present and he gives us “To Me, My X-Men” which seems silly but I guess from his perspective, he sees youngsters wearing similar outfits and assumes they are the X-Men.

All New Ultimates

All New Ultimates 1 to All New Ultimates 12

Ultimate Shadowcat has had starring roles in five ongoings – two X-Men titles and two Spider-Man titles, as well as this series – All New Ultimates.  I own all twelve issues of it.

The creative team has pretty much stayed the same for the entire run, outside of three issues.

Michel Fiffe wrote the entire series.

Amilcar Pinna has been the main artist for the series, not providing art for issues 7, 8 and 9.

Those issues were done by Giannis Milonogiannis with coloring duties being handled by Jordie Bellaire.  Except for issue nine, when Colorist Esther Sanz handled the duties.

Nolan Woodard has been the colorist for the entire series, outside of issues 7, 8 and 9.

VC’s Clayton Cowles has been the series letterer.

Issue eleven enlisted several inkers – Terry Pallot, Amilcar Pinna, Lorenzo Ruggiero and Le Beau Underwood.  Terry Pallot came back to ink the final issue.

Avengers Forever Part One of Two

Took us a year but we finally got around to reviewing part one of this story!

The Exiles team is – Mimic, Nocturne, Morph, Sunfire, Sasquatch and the awesome Magik.

The issue opens with some guards investigating a break-in.

There is an ad for Grind, a film I sort of want to watch.  We can add Mike Vogel to the cast of stars of the film – along with Jennifer Morrison and Adam Brody.

The intruders are, unfortunately, The Avengers – Captain America, Giant Man, Falcon, Wasp, Polaris and Hawkeye.  Polaris is the odd member as twelve years later, she still isn’t an Avenger and I doubt she ever will.  Though I doubted Havok would be an Avenger and that turned out relatively okay.,

The Avengers make short work of the SHIELD agents.  The poor agents try to use holy items but Captain America just laughs at this feeble attempt.  The entire team are vampires!  Vampengers! if you will.

Exiles 31 Magik 1

The Mission District of San Francisco.  Teep’s Coffee, Internet Cafe.  1:28aam.  The Exiles team is consulting with their Tallus, their version of Ziggy from Quantum Leap.  They know about the Vampengers.  Nocturne can’t believe Captain America is a vampire.  What’s next, Reed Richards . . . King of Latveria?  Daredevil the Kingpin of Crime?  Both stories actually took place in the Proper Marvel Universe.  Morph found all of this information on the Internet.  So it is common knowledge.

Mimic recognizes where this universe must be split from.  The classic tale of Captain America fighting Baron Blood.  That story ends with Cap beheading the Baron with his mighty shield.

Then there is this awkward ad –

Daredevil DVD Ad Stare All You Want

I’m sure Jennifer Garner loved this advertisement.  I would recommend the Daredevil : Director’s Cut, it is so good.  Basically instead of Jennifer Garner / Elektra scenes, we got story and content instead.  Who would have thought that was what the released film was missing!?!

Heather, for the benefit of new readers, asks what that story is all about.  Instead of the beheading, Baron Blood bit Captain America, turning him into a vampire.  Cap later killed the Baron and became the King of All Vampires, so the basic anit-vampire artifacts don’t have any affect on him.

Exiles 31 Magik 2

Blink is no longer with the team, so it is up to Mimic to figure out how to use the Tallus and learn their goal.  He just knows that they have to stop Captain America from enslaving the entire city.

Then we get how great this version of Magik is.  Her solution to stopping Cap is to just kill him.  It is the quickly and sure firest way to ensure their goal.  Mimic has too much respect to just kill Captain America.  Plus, this gives him a chance to confront Magik with all of her decisions up to this point.  Magik, to save the day or to send them to their next Earth, almost killed a Moira MacTaggert, crippled Black Panther’s son and may have killed Morlock children.  Mimic tells her to stop being so quick and vicious in her methods.  One does not merely order Magik what to do.

Exiles 31 Magik 3

Magik decides to get up close with him and asks what he will do to her if she doesn’t, maybe a spanking?  This doesn’t amuse Mimic, at all.  Mimic, being too bothered, has to leave the room.

Exiles 31 Magik 4

Sunfire looks annoyed.  Magik walks over to her and asks if she ever gets lonely.  Sunfire responds that she isn’t lonely now but maybe later.  Which I like this flirtation, it doesn’t go anywhere, from what I remember.

Morph has located the now retired Union Jack, and Mimic wants him to get a phone number for the British hero.  They call the former Union Jack, at his Falsworth Estate, he informs them about how there are only six locations in San Francisco that Captain America could cast that wide of a spell.  The page ends with us being able to see the damage to Union Jack’s face, which is all scarred from a burn wound, like Mel Gibson in The Man Without a Face – which I was all about Mel Gibson playing Two-Face during the early 90s just based off of that film.  They went with Tommy Lee Jones instead, two years later.

The Exiles have two bags full of holy relics, they are as ready as they ever will be.  They are either going to steal the enchanted item or kill Captain America – Magik wanted to do both but that got vetoed.

The Vampengers are building an alter, it has to be made out of wood, which upsets Polaris.  While she is belly aching over that, she gets a wood stake through the heart.  Magik just killed Polaris, which irritates Mimic.  She is already killing suckers.  Blood suckers.

Sasquatch fights Falcon.  Morph fights Wasp.  It makes sense the two leaders fight, so we get Mimic v Cap.  On this world, Mimic is a mercenary.  Giant Man fights Sunfire.  We are reminded that one should never fight someone with fire powers as she burns him.  Typically, there is no coming back from that.  That will leave a scar.  Hawkeye successfully shoots an arrow into Sunfire’s arm, another thing that will leave a scar!

Exiles 31 Magik 5

This all happens while Giant Man, Sunfire and Hawkeye were trading quips in the fight.  Which is something that has always confused Magik, why waste the time to banter.  While she is complaining, Hawkeye is able to flip her upside down and throws her against the ground.

Sasquatch levels the playing field by taking both Falcon and Giant Man through the roof and onto the top floor.

Mimic and Captain America, who I wish I could come up with a clever name.  King America, Captain Vampire, King Vamperira.

Hawkeye bites Sunfire.

Captain America brags to Mimic about how not all heroes are vampires but most know to leave him alone.  Mimic is tired of all of this chit chat and he uses his bone claws to separate Captain America’s head from his shoulders.  The threat is done.

Issue ends with Cap’s body standing up, retrieving his head and putting it back where it ends.

Exiles 31 Magik 6

Cap wants to know if Mimic wants to try again.  Which is a pretty boss move.

Part Two can be found here :

Exiles 32

I do like how Mimic of Exiles – instead of having the Original Five X-Men’s powers, has the powers of Wolverine and Colossus.  Those are his two main powers that he features.  This issue he also has Cyclops’ optic blasts.  Really, all one needs is those three powers.  Got the range attack, got the claws for close combat quarters and the armor for protection.  No wonder that guy is the leader.

This website has a pretty nice review and some individual panels if you want to get a taste of the comic itself.

No Gods, No Masters Part Three of Three

The final issue!

Cover Artist David Nakayama, great homage cover to the Where’s Waldo books!

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 0

Such a fun character chart!  Black Widow has a crush on Shadowcat, that was stated in issue four but that was all that was made out of it until now.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 1

Bombshell narrates this issue.  The Ultimates, what is left of the Serpent Skulls and the newly form, Terror Inc are all against the giant Mr. Jip.

Deladier Tower, Uptown.  Bombshell is regretting donning her costume.

Cloak tries to get the civilians out of harm’s way.  Poor Bombshell, realizes that Poey wasn’t that great of a boyfriend.

Crossbones takes this opportunity to smack Ecstasy around, which Black Widow dropkicks him.  Ecstasy suggests that Black Widow kill Crossbones, poor Jessica has to tell her that isn’t what they do.  Fun how these two ladies don’t know each, even though they have been up in each other’s business for a while now.  O’Reilly doesn’t have such qualms.

Sidwinder starts fighting Crippler but Crippler is stronger.  Poor Bomshell, she believes that she only really grew in love with him with his death.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 2

A guy in a self made costume (are they all not that?) with sais (cool that someone besides Raphael and Elektra use those) and he attempts to attack Taskmaster.  He isn’t named, so I’m not sure who he is.  How come he isn’t on the character list, is beyond me.  He isn’t named on the first page, as well.

Spider-Man and Shadowcat take Taskmaster down.  A lot of non-fighting-the-giant-giant going on.

Bombshell gets to fight Diamondback, and knocks her out.

Giant-Jip wants help, he would like Ecstasy to cure him.

Ultimate Terror Inc (or just Terror, here) wants Bombshell to blow a hole into Jip’s chest – who seems okay with that.  Dagger goes in after him, as Bombshell needs to recharge.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 3

Dagger is accessing all of her power and Shadowcat is providing some assistance.  Black Widow tries to save Crossbones.

Terror is trying to get Jip to calm down.  For some odd, strange and weird reason, Jip’s heart has a Jip head.  How does that work?  He has his giant head and a head on the top of his heart?

Terror mental links with Jip and he starts calming down.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 4

Dagger’s healing glow seems to be also calming down Jip.  Terror is spitted out.  Jip is dead, which makes sense, I’m not even sure how Pym survives the enlarging and shrinking ability.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 5

Crossbones isn’t dead, just barely alive.  Spider-Man notices that three of their opponents have skull masks – Taskmaster / Crossbones / Scourge.  I like Shadowcat’s guess – that they are Misfits fans.

Bombshell is not thrilled that Diamondback is still alive.

Weeks Later.  Abandoned SHIELD Facility.  Downtown Brooklyn.  Black Widow meets with Monica Chang, the former SHIELD director.  Crossbones was a former SHIELD agent who went rogue after becoming the head of the Serpent Skulls.  Ecstasy was a mid-priority, she had bought O’Reilly’s commanding officer so that’s why the police were never hot on her trail.  She also has connections with Hydra, which is what SHIELD is really interested in.  Chang wanted the new Ultimates to get Crossbones out of hiding and bring him down.  I imagine this is leading into Spider-Man’s own comic having him fight Hydra.

Unfortunately, the threats were taken down but Ecstasy is still free to go.  Black Widow wonders if Terror can testify to bring down Roxxon.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 6

13th St & Broadway, NYC.  Jessica Drew’s Temporary Residence.  Jessica has updated Kitty with what she knew.  Kitty is officially moved out.  Jessica apologizes for any awkwardness, Kitty isn’t sure what she is referring to.  Jessica is, of course, referring to issue four.  Kitty was only pretending to be upset or jealous, it was very flattering.  Imagine if these two actually dated?

Dagger’s head is in Cloak’s lap, so I guess those two are okay now.

Nice to see Spider-Man out of costume, typically, he wears it during these relaxed times.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 7

Jessica gives a classic Shadowcat speech.  The Skull Serpents are all in jail.  She spends an entire page essentially saying that with great power comes great responsibility.

Gruenwald’s Bodega.  O’Reilly is trying to make her CI (Criminal Informant) her new assistant.  O’Relly is going to open her own private inspector firm.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 8

Apparently, even after her speech, Black Widow states that the team is breaking up.  I guess they don’t want to stick around as there is no more title.  How they know that, is beyond me?

The Ultimates are not just a team, they are family.  So they are going their own ways but they will keep in touch.  Spider-Man is going back to his own ongoing series.  Shadowcat asks if the team will help out with the X-Men, so I imagine they are going to appear in All New X-Men soon.  Which is a tad awkward, as Spider-Man has been on that mission, that entire time.

I like Bombshell making her ‘lame’ X-puns – X-cellent and X-press, I do that and it is way fun.

All New Ultimates 12 Shadowcat 9

That Michel Fiffe, is one classy guy with his farewell and thanks page.

All New X-Men 12

Writer Brian Michael Bendis

Penciler Stuart Immonen

Inker Wade von Grawbadger

Colorist Ran Beredo

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Cover Dated August 2013

It is a happy happenstance (happistance?) that I got to review these posts back to back.

Avengers Mansion.  Hours ago.  Havok is watching his older brother make an awesome speech on the news.  Captain America comes into the room, there is a problem with his brother.  Havok wants to know what Scott has done now.

All New X-Men 12 Kitty 1a All New X-Men 12 Kitty 1b

The All New X-Men vs Uncanny Avengers!  The Uncanny Avengers are – Havok, Captain America, Thor, Rogue and the Scarlet Witch.

The All New X-Men were pulled from Uncanny X-Men 8, so when Beast states that Scarlet Witch is from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, that is all he knows her from.  At this point, she appeared in issues four, five, six and seven, so the team knows her pretty well as a villain.  She would show up again in issue eleven but they will never know that.

Beast didn’t know Scott even had a brother.  Scott hasn’t even thought of his brother in years.  Scott wouldn’t see Havok in the proper continuity until issue 54 of Uncanny X-Men.  The two brothers hug.  Scott is so impressed that his brother is a member of the Avengers.  Not just a member but leading a team with Captain America and Thor as members.  That is pretty impressive!

Scott and Havok go and have themselves a chat.  Havok explains that he was an X-Man at some point.  Scarlet Witch and Thor know what it is like to have a brother, so they want Havok to have this moment.  Havok has to tell his young older brother that they haven’t been closed in a while.  Scott tries to play it off like his older self didn’t kill Xavier but Havok states that that is exactly what happened.

All New X-Men 12 Kitty A

Havok tells Scott that the Original Five have to go back in time.  Wolverine confronts Captain America.

Kitty wants Bobby and Hank to calm down about the Scarlet Witch.  Jean, because she is a psychic brat, she reads Wanda’s mind and sees the image of the sentence fragment that ruined mutants everywhere.

Jean knows that Wanda is a murderer.  Jean just loses her mind.  Wanda is mostly upset that her privacy was invaded.  Jean then hits every body with a telekinesis wave.

All New X-Men 12 Kitty 2

Kitty wants Jean to calm down.  Jean can’t believe they let Wanda stay as an Avenger, which is pretty amazing.  Wanda casts a spell.

All New X-Men 12 Kitty Jean quicksand

Jean is now in quicksand.  Rogue can’t believe there is a yet another out of control Jean in the world.  Captain America wants Jean to calm down.

Jean now has the notice that mutants were in the millions and then they were under 200.

The Bank of England, London.  Sabretooth and Lady Mastermind are causing all sorts of destruction.  Lady Mastermind is wondering why they are stealing all of this money, they have enough to buy a small country.  Lady Mastermind talks to Mystique about she actually cares about Xavier being dead.  Look at Bendis setting up six years ago that Mystique loves Xavier!

All New X-Men 12 Kitty B

Even while Jean is stuck in the ground, she is gong on and on about Wanda being a monster.

Cyclops wants to know why they are in trouble.  Wolverine wonders too.  Captain America shows some footage about how the Original X-Men are robbing all types of banks.  I like the lady revealing how much she doesn’t know her X-Men facts.  I imagine they don’t get much news footage.

Kitty wants Bobby to shut up.  He’s not doing very well in this issue.

All New X-Men 12 Kitty 3

Wolverine reveals that it couldn’t be the Original Five X-Men. It must be a shape shifter like Mystique.  Scott defends Mystique, makes sense that a 17 year old would be into Mystique – lots of possibilities.  Kitty tells Scott that he doesn’t know the real Mystique.

All New X-Men 12 Kitty c

Wolverine keeps calling Scott, Slim, it seems weird.  Also weird is Rogue having asides with Wanda, are they friends?

Rogue says that Mystique could be Jean but she used her powers earlier, so it couldn’t be her.

All New X-Men 12 Kitty 4

Captain America wants Kitty and Wolverine to take the students back to the school.  Kitty tells him that they can take care of themselves.  Good for her!

Scott is all about this being a mutant problem so there should be a mutant solution.  Rogue and Wanda explain that there is no more mutant and human problems, just people problems.

Havok tells Scott that he loves him.  aw

All New X-Men 12 Kitty Summers hug

A Summers Hug!  Who even knows when that happened last time.  I thought they high fived but that must be another issue.

All New X-Men 12 Kitty 5

Kitty explains to Jean that M-Day was a horrible day and that the mutant community is just now coming out of it.

Wolverine is not taking Cap’s advice and is going to still pursue Mystique.

There is an ad for Age of Ultron 10.

Issue ends with Mystique, Sabretooth and Lady Mastermind surrounded by all of their sweet stolen cash.

All New X-Men 11

Writer Brian Michael Bendis

Penciler Stuart Immonen

Inker Wade von Grawbadger

Color Artist Marte Gracia

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Cover Dated July 2013

The cover asks who of the Original Five X-Men will join Cyclops.  Also, Magik is on the cover, that’s pretty sweet!

All New X-Men 11 Kitty 1

I really like Immomen’s choice to pan out with the camera.  If you look at the first panel with Jean and the last panel with Kitty, you can see how far back Jean is.  Everybody but one member of the Original Five is upset.

All New X-Men 11 Kitty 2

Warren is leaving the Jean Grey School for the New Xavier School, good for him.  He wanted to go back to his timeline immediately and was outvoted then Jean has been messing with his mind.  Why would he want to stay?

All New X-Men 11 Kitty 3

No one wants Angel to leave.  The Original Five need to stick together.  So funny now with how Scott is the missing member of the team, as he is in space.  Cyclops is more than happy to have his decent friend among his new team.  Jean is being bombarded with more thoughts.

To stop all the thoughts, she drops everybody but Warren.  Jean directs Warren to go back into the school.

All New X-Men 11 Kitty 4

No one is thrilled with Jean, with how she keeps resorting to mind control to get her way.  Good thing the Cuckoos are there to give her a taste of her own medicine so she can learn how bitter it is.

All New X-Men 11 Kitty 6

Jean goes down and Kitty catches her.  Wolverine tries to step in but Magneto just tosses him aside, which is awesome.

All New X-Men 11 Kitty 5

Jean tries to fight back but she isn’t use to having to fight another telepathic, much less, three of them.  Storm doesn’t want mutant on mutant hate crimes happening on the school grounds.  I like how the Cuckoos want to be impressed with Jean but take joy in how lacking this Jean is.

Warren starts coming out of his mind control.  Storm yells at the gathered students to go back inside.  Scott shouts for the Cuckoos to stop.  Cyclops also wants them to stop but Emma sees a teaching opportunity here.  I like Emma standing up to both Cyclops and Wolverine, good for her!

All New X-Men 11 Magik 1

Warren reexplains that he is leaving.  Warren tries to end on a positive note by telling Scott that he likes Scott’s adult self.

There is an ad for the Inhumans Motion Comic that gives life to Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee’s amazing run on that title.  I need to own it one day.

All New X-Men 11 Magik 2

Magik teleports the Blue Side away.  Jean faints, like how her 90s cartoon self seem to do every time she tried to be useful.

Scott carries her to the Infirmary.  Kitty isn’t happy losing one of her students so early.  She’s also mad at Beast for even creating this situation.

Resilent Headquarters, Seattle.  Pepper Potts wants some guy to access Tony’s personal accounts.  This is the all too obvious attempt to try to force Iron Man into the comic as Iron Man 3 is coming to theaters.  The guy finally sets up the account and there is a giant explosion.  It looks like Wolverine and the Original Five X-Men are attacking.  She doesn’t transform but Pepper Potts was Mystique in disguise.  Once these two pages are over, there is an ad for Iron Man 3.  Well done, Production!

Jean is crying on the basketball court.  She clearly never watched, Love & Basketball, no tears on the court!  Such a good movie!

Kitty shows up to try to lend some support.  She tells Jean to stop mind controlling everybody!  Too bad that they were pulled from Uncanny X-Men 8, or Jean’s behavior could just be explained away as her being the perfect student of Xavier’s.

Kitty asks if Jean has met Spider-Man, she hasn’t.  She would have in Uncanny X-Men 27, when Mimic returned.  Jean hasn’t even heard of him.  Kitty’s description is pretty funny – full body stocking, never stops talking.

All New X-Men 11 Kitty 7

Kitty explains that with great power, comes great responsibility.  Hopefully we one day review the issue where Spider-Man tells Kitty this – that would be fun.  It would be a safe assumption to believe that Spider-Man has told every costumed hero, his personal philosophy.  Kitty tells Jean that she is always available for chats.  Kitty really is the best friend, anyone could ask for.  Kitty wants Jean to stop acting as horrible as she has, and to get it under control.  Kitty also wants Jean to apologize to her teammates.

Jean shares that she can’t believe the team breaking up.  At first, I thought she meant with Scott but she means the team.  She references how the Original X-Men are replaced with an All New All Different team and they eventually gather to form X-Factor.  Kitty explains that they have already changed history, so anything can happen.  Jean is so full of rage.  This really is the first time I’ve been a fan of Jean’s.  Kitty wants Jean to learn to focus her rage.  Jean suggests Mystique and Kitty is all for it.

All New X-Men 11 Kitty 8

Jean promises to get under control.  Jean feels the need to hug Kitty and they do.  That’s a lot of hugging in such a short period of issues.

I can’t help but notice the big panel on the left and the bottom one, how different their costumes really are.  I gripe about Kitty’s uniform being just her original trainee uniform but it really has been modified to be unique.

Later.  Gracia treats us to a page and a half of the X-Men bathed in red light – which I totally adore.  They don’t really state where they are going.  To investigate the X-Men sighting in Seattle, perhaps?  On the X-Jet is Wolverine and Kitty and her Original Four X-Men.

Then Thor knocks the plane out of the sky.  We are going to get ourselves a little X-Men v Uncanny Avengers.  Which are Havok, Thor, Captain America, Scarlet Witch and Rogue.  Also, Wolverine is on the team so this shouldn’t be too big of a deal.  And it really isn’t.  I’ll review issue 12 one of these days.

Legendary Star Lord 7

There is a Star Wars “Welcome Home” variant that I really want!

Legendary Star Lord 7 Lockheed 1

Poor Kitty, on her way to save Quill, crashes space Quinjet.  Good thing Lydia, Quill’s fancy space ship computer, comes along to pick Pryde up.  Lydia tracked her using the Kitty phone, that’s how they are going to locate Quill.

A fun drinking game could be to drink whenever Kitty states she hates space.

Pryde doesn’t admit that she is in love with Quill, it is way too early for that.

I like Kitty petting Lockheed, he isn’t being forgotten in the scene.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Shadowcat 1

J-Son’s base is called, the Flying Fortress.  That is how he is never caught, he is constantly on the move.  He is very well protected, his has an entire criminal syndicate plus the Slaughter Squad.  Pryde didn’t know that was their name.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Lockheed 2

Pryde has to explain that her powerset is to be intangible, not invisible.

Is there anything better than Lockheed on Kitty’s shoulders?  I don’t believe so.

Pryde is regretting not getting the Guardians or the X-Men involved.  She’ll learn from this when it comes to Black Vortex.  Pryde wanted to save Quill so much, that she left without a real plan.

Pryde reflects on her time in the bullet, and comes up with a plan that involves Lydia having to maneuver the ship (herself).

I really like that panel of Kitty and Lockheed looking at each other.

Meanwhile inside, Quill is down to his boxers.  J-Son is taunting him, he wants to punish his son for making him restart his empire from the ground up.  J-Son isn’t going to kill his son, he is going to make him suffer but first he is going to brainwash him.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Lockheed 4

Pryde’s plan is to rush the ship and phase into it.  I like that she tells Lydia to watch over Lockheed, which is a shame as she should take him into battle.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Lockheed 5

Lydia slams the breaks and Shadowcat is in deep space.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Shadowat 1

Williams does a great job of showing how fast she is going with how many places she phases through.  Great use of the double page splash.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Shadowat 2

The Skrull does a horrible job of introducing Pryde to J-Son.  He calls her, a mousy thing, and gets slugged to the jaw for his troubles.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Shadowat 3

Pryde tells Quill to hold his breath, as they keep phasing through the ship.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Shadowat 4

Pryde has saved Quill, yet again – this time, in person.  Lydia flies by and picks up the two love birds.  I guess that makes sense that Lockheed didn’t come along.  She was snatching and grabbing.  I suppose he was along for the ride to give Kitty someone to speak to.

Legendary Star Lord 7 Shadowat 5

Quill recognizes that Pryde hates space (drink!) but she is a woman of her word.  Shadowcat did travel a billion light years, so if the gal wants some space sugar, give her what she wants!

Legendary Star Lord 7 Shadowat 6

Quill gives it to her!

Legendary Star Lord 7 Shadowat 7

Quill sets Lydia on course for Ma Savage’s on Spartax, they are gong to have a real date!

Misa, of the Slaughter Squad, is hot on their trail.

Brennan-7.  A Dirty, Dusty Planet.  J-Son orders all of his guards dead, for allowing Quill’s escape.  Bligh updates J-Son on his investments, business is good.  J-Son has come to meet . . . Thane, the son of Thanos!  Which is how the issue ends.  Thane is the new character find of Infinity, which makes sense as Black Vortex is coming around the corner.

This is literally one the best issues I’ve read in a while!  High Note.

Dark Avengers Uncanny X-Men Exodus

Written by Matt Fraction

Cover Dated November 2009

Utopia Part Six of Six, the Conclusion!

7 Days Ago.  Beast confronts Emma and Scott, in their bed.  I wonder if this dictates what they wear to bed as Wolverine did the same thing to them in Astonishing X-Men Volume Three Issue 1.  Beast is telling both of them that the other is keeping secrets.

Scott’s secret is X-Force and Emma’s is the Cabal.  Emma wants to keep hers but Scott is far to willing to share.  The story continues in Dark X-Men : The Confession, which I read but don’t own any longer so we won’t be revealing it.  Essentially, they share their secrets.

Now.  1.2 Miles off the coast of San Francisco.  The Dark Avengers are on their way to Utopia.  Cyclops starts telling people their orders.  I like this two page spread with the bottom panels.  Where it goes from Cyclops and the X-Men to a panel of Cyclops face to Osborn’s face to him and his team.  Cyclops wants the team to battle stations.  Osborn just wants Mystique to stay in Xavier form and the rest of the team can do what they do best.

Cyclops tells Wolverine and X23 to fight Weapon Omega and Daken.  Cyclops realizes that Hawkeye is really Bullseye.  He tells Angel to take out Hawkeye.  Angel comments that it isn’t him who Cyclops is sending, and Cyclops tells him that he is right.

Ms. Marvel is attacked by the mutants who she attacked earlier in the storyline.  Colossus fights Scorpion Spider-Man, who has given up most of the control to the symbiote.  Wolverine finally gets some revenge for his dead Alpha Flight companions by attacking Weapon Omega.  That’s a nice call back.  Especially as the Dark Avengers and the Uncanny X-Men don’t have much history together, the teams nor individuals.

Marin County.  Bullshawkeye is fighting Archangel now, as Warren is able to shift between the two identities.  He wouldn’t want to stay as Archangel as he is a lot more ruthless in that form.

The Big Guns are now in the fight – Sentry, Ares and Iron Patriot.  Namor goes after Sentry.  Iron Patriot fights Cyclops, which makes sense as they are the leaders of the two sides.  Norman is mad as Scott made him look poorly on the news.

Dark Avengers Uncanny X-Men Exodus New Mutants v Ares minus Magik

Dani Moonstar comes to Utopia and takes on Ares.  Her fellow New Mutants help her in the confrontation.  I thought Magik was in this sequence but its Magma as you can tell by the flames at her feet.  I had thought it was a portal from Limbo opening up that brought the rest of the team there but its just the flame from Dan’s sword as she is now a Valkyrie.  Not sure where Magik is during all of the fight as she only appears in one sequence, as far as I can see.

Dark Beast fights off Northstar and Dazzler.  I like the idea of those two heroes together.  The X-Club shows up to fight Dark Beast.

Mimic fights Iceman.  Daken makes sexist comments about how women can’t fight.  Armor, X23 and Pixie start beating him down.

Emma finds Xavier, I think in the Dark Avengers ship.  Emma gets help from Xavier to shut down Sentry.  The last time she fought Sentry, in the New Avengers arc, Sentry, she established a White Room in his head.  Kitty’s in issue 8 of New Mutants, so we’ll review that issue one of these days.

The Dodsons did the opening pages for the Dak Confession tie-in and now they kick in for the Emma / Sentry White Room sequence.  Well, Emma and Robert Reynolds (the Sentry’s alter ego).  In the all White Room is one black square.  Inside that black square, is another Black Room where Bob is standing in.   The Sentry’s deal is that he’s super powerful but he has a dark side, The Void, that sort of balances him out.  But the Sentry is also a split personality guy so he has a Sentry persona, a Bob persona and a combo of Bob controlling Sentry sort of personality.  That’s my understanding.  Emma pulls Bob out of the Black Room and into the White Room.  The White Room is Bob’s safe place.  Emma keeps the Void at bay and this lets Bob take over Sentry again.  Sentry snaps out of his fight with Namor, is ashamed of himself and flies off.  Emma now had a shard of the Void in her head and transforms into her diamond form to keep it there.  Which becomes her status quo for a while.  I really like the way it resolves itself with Cyclops.  I think we’ll get to those issues.  Actually, Cyclops defeats the Void in Uncanny X-Men 519 – which doesn’t have Kitty nor Magik in it so I don’t own it.  Shoot!  I really like the Matt Fraction era of Uncanny X-Men due to how heavy on Cyclops it is.

Iron Patriot is just wailing on Cyclops.  Cyclops is annoying Iron Patriot, with how humorous he is being.  Iron Patriot is confidant as they still have Ares, to which, Cyclops asks him if that is the case.

Ares is being overwhelmed by Dani, he wasn’t expecting to fight a Valkyrie this evening.  Dani isn’t just a Valkyrie, she also has a bunch more power to take down a god.  Iron Patriot doesn’t like how the fight is going now.

The Void is chasing Sentry in space.  Daken is being beaten down by girl power.  Wolverine isn’t going down for Weapon Omega.  Ms. Marvel makes her way to Iron Patriot, trying to get him to give up on the fight.  The Dark Avengers are losing by sheer numbers.

Dark Avengers Uncanny X-Men Exodus Magik a Dark Avengers Uncanny X-Men Exodus Magik b

See Magik as the first X-Man on the top left there?  She has a tear in her costume above the knee, how did she get that?  We are now entering the era of “Everyone is an X-Man” which I liked.

Ms. Marvel tells Iron Patriot that no one has won over Americans by committing genocide on live television.  The Dark Avengers leave the island.  Iceman congratulates Cyclops but he still has one last bomb to drop.

In the last Deodato page, Cyclops makes another speech on television.  Cyclops has been an X-Man since he was 15.  He declares that Utopia is a safe haven and no mutants will be harm and all mutants are welcomed here.  It is in international waters, so they are no longer part of America.  They will still defend and support America but they are now free.

The Dodsons take over for the final three pages.  Norman hosts his own press conference, declaring it a victory as he has rid America of the mutant threats.  He and the Dark Avengers take full credit for all of this, working his spin magic.

Utopia.  We learn that Utopia is nowhere near functional.  The X-Club is full of bad news and a full workload.  Since Emma is in her diamond form, she is cut off from her emotions, except for snark.  Emma references the last time the X-Men lived on an island, it didn’t go so well.  I’m not sure what she is referring to with that line.  The island that Magneto used as a base, circa Uncanny X-Men 150, is my best guess.  That sure didn’t work out so well for Illyana.

In future issues, Beast isn’t happy that he was left to be tortured while Scott waited until Utopia was ready to be brought to surface, starting the six years (and running) of hatred that Beast has for Scott.

The story continues in Dark Confession and Dark Reign : The List X-Men 1, which I own so we’ll review that eventually.   There is also a preview of the next big storyline, Necrosha – which we will review one of these days.  The big thing to come out of that story is that Doug Ramsey comes back to the land of the living.

All New X-Men 6

All New X-Men 6

Writer Brian Michael Bendis

Artist David Marquez

Color Artist Marte Gracia

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Cover Dated March 2013

I love this cover so much!  Kitty is the one true heir to Xavier’s legacy and dream.

Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.  Jean Grey wakes up to find Cyclops and Magneto standing in front of her.  They want to take her away from the school.  Wolverine crashes through the wall and stabs her in the throat, with his claws.

All New X-Men 6 Kitty 1

Jean wakes up from this intense nightmare.  Kitty comes in to check on her.  We learn that Jean is sleeping in Kitty’s room.  I wonder where she is staying now.  Kitty reintroduces herself to the young Ms. Grey.  Jean has been through a lot in the last few days.  Kitty is the new mentor to the Original Five X-Men.  Poor Jean knows that her entire family is dead, dying horribly, but she also knows that she herself dies horribly.  Kitty hugs Jean.

All New X-Men 6 Kitty Pryde hugging Jean like Uncanny X-Men 131 Phoenix hugging Kitty

The hug reminds me of Uncanny X-Men 131, when Phoenix hugs Kitty on their first meeting.

Scott is having a rough go of things.  Everyone just keeps staring at him.  He is dealing with the information that he ends up killing Xavier.  Just yesterday, he was the leader of the X-Men and the future was bright.  He takes off with one of Wolverine’s motorcycles.  Wolverine takes off after him, in a jeep.

All New X-Men 6 Kitty 2

Kitty tries to get Jean to come down for breakfast.  Before they can leave the room, Jean is struck with hundreds of thoughts.

Thoughts are about : Taco Bell not being real food.  Where is Angel?  Too much hair in the bathroom drains.  Wolverine smells like a dog.

All New X-Men 6 Kitty 3

Kitty gets Jean to calm down.

More thoughts : Someone’s arm hurts.  Something about pizza, mac and cheese.  Where is Angel?  People are lying. Listening to endless Avengers hypocrites lecturing.  People are thinking about Emma.  Cyclops was right.  Someone use to work at McDonald’s but they don’t walk around in their uniform all day.

All New X-Men 6 Kitty 4

Jean appreciates Kitty’s assistance.  Jean knows Yoga, was that around in the 60s?  Kitty tells Jean about the times Kitty has hung out with the proper adult Jean Grey, which I’m pretty sure those two barely have any real experience.

Storm enters the room, now those two have real history together.  Storm tells Jean that she is the new leader of the Original Five, as they listen to her.

Scott is in Salem Center.  He is confused over the advancements of phone technology.  He is also concern with why there is water in bottles, which wasn’t a thing until the mid-80s.  The grocery clerk recognizes that Scott looks like he could be the younger brother to Cyclops, who is on the cover of Rolling Stone.  I would have bought that issue.  He wants to buy the issue, but it is$4.99, which also surprises him.  The surprises keep coming as he finds a wad of cash in the jacket he found on the motorcycle.

Wolverine is behind him now, and extorts him outside.  Wolverine pulls Scott by the ear.  He also calls him, Slim, which I’m not sure if Wolverine even calls Cyclops that.

On a production point, this Wolverine / Scott two page spread is suppose to be read from the top of the page then down to the bottom half of the page.  But there is no obvious signal to read that way, so I read the left page in the traditional manner.  Followed by being embarrassed that I didn’t notice the odd dialogue, but it just made sense.

Scott pushes Wolverine, discovers that he has unbreakable bones.  Wolverine mentions how the X-Men have a deal with the town folk of Salem Center, to keep their mutant headaches and nonsense out of the town proper.

Wolverine makes the mistake of saying that Scott murdered Xavier.  After reconfirming that he has unbreakable bones, he optic blasts Wolverine.  Scott takes off on the motorcycle.

It took six issues but Warren finally meets his present day counterpart, Angel.  Warren is taken back by Angel’s metal wings.  The situation isn’t made any better when Angel reveals that he doesn’t remember how he got metal wings.  Poor adult Angel has had an extremely hard life.  I am so use to seeing Angel with long hair that it is nice to see short hair Angel in contrast.

Issue ends with some henchman telling Mystique about how a twelve year old Cyclops was seen around town.  Mystique wants to see young Scott for herself.

Uncanny X-Men 131

Uncanny X-Men 131

Production Chris Claremont & John Byrne & Terry Austin

Aided and Abetted by

Letterer Tom Orzechowski

Colorist Glynis Wein

Cover Dated March 1980

This is the last issue of the Dark Phoenix Saga that I own.  One day, I need to own Uncanny X-Men 132 but one of these days.  Today, we are celebrating Mother’s Day with Terri Pryde’s third appearance.

Uncanny X-Men 131 Kitty 0

This is also Kitty’s third appearance, not that much of a coincidence.

Issue opens with Kitty on the run from the Hellfire Club soldiers in Chicago.

Uncanny X-Men 131 Kitty 1

Luckily for Kitty, she was able to call Nightcrawler in New York City (as the team split in two, one team for Kitty and the other team for Dazzler).  Poor Kitty has been running for a few hours now.  She collapses to the ground.  Phoenix appears and demolishes the soldiers’ car.  Seeing this spectacular display of power, scares Kitty and she tries to run away again.  Nightcrawler teleports in front of Kitty, grabs her and crawls up the wall.  As it is seen on the cover.

Cyclops and Dazzler catch up to Phoenix.  Cyclops can’t believe Phoenix destroyed the car but she feels justified due to how scared Kitty was.  Kurt signals to the rest of the team that he is on the roof.  Phoenix lifts all three up to the roof.  Kurt reveals that Kitty phased through the roof.

Uncanny X-Men 131 Kitty 2

Phoenix tracks Kitty and finds her.  We get the classic hug from Phoenix and Kitty, the only real interaction Kitty has with her.  The moment is recreated in All New X-Men 6 and 11, where Kitty hugs the teen Jean Grey.

Dazzler can’t believe how different her life is, just within the 24 hours.  Cyclops bandages Kitty’s cuts.  Phoenix reads one of the guard’s mind and gets caught up on what has been happening behind the scenes.  The X-Men make up a plan of action.

The guards bring in a tied up Phoenix and Dazzler.  Emma is messing with Storm’s mind.  So great seeing how this rivalry begins.

Uncanny X-Men 131 Kitty 4

Kitty works her way to where the last place she saw the X-Men that brought her.  Wolverine and Colossus are still in those hanging cages.  It looks like Kitty is wearing a genetic version of a Fantastic Four uniform.  Blue pants and shirt, white belt with matching gloves and boots.  Cyclops gave Kitty a list of priorities.  Save Storm first, then Wolverine.  Storm isn’t there so she frees Wolverine.  Even Cyclops knows how useless Colossus is.

The cages are meant to keep the X-Men dopey.  Kitty tries to get Wolverine on his feet, while she is trying that, some jerk guards blast Kitty with a stun ray.  This makes Wolverine quite angry, and no one likes him when he is angry.

Back in the car, Phoenix is using her powers to make it seem like the X-Men are prisoners but they are not.  Dazzler creates a blinding light and the rescue plan is a go!  Not only do we get Storm and Emma, the Phoenix also confronts Emma.  By confronting, I mean, Phoenix completely shuts down Emma and leaves her like how she will eventually leave Mastermind.  Emma’s mind is a wreck after this, for quite some time.

Uncanny X-Men 131 Kitty 6

Wolverine and Colossus, who is carrying Kitty, finally end up with Cyclops and Kurt.  Cyclops checks on Kitty, she’s okay now.

The team is finally reunited.    They head back to the Pryde home.

Uncanny X-Men 131 Kitty 8

I love the above panel so much!  It just captures my imagination.  When I first saw it, I just kept moving my eyes over each character.  Such a great job with the stances and poses.

Dazzler turns down Xavier’s offer to join the team.  Where was Xavier during all of this?

Uncanny X-Men 131 Kitty 9

Kitty’s parents are so glad to see their daughter again.  What did Xavier tell them had happened?  Its been days since they saw their daughter.  They were suppose to just get some ice cream.  I’m sure there was news reports on the attack at the malt shoppe.  Carmen is in his full right to be angry.  Then he just calms down and agrees to have Kitty join the school.

Uncanny X-Men 131 Kitty 10

Phoenix straight up pulled a Classic Xavier and did some mind manipulation.  Which is pretty insane as, essentially, the X-Men just kidnapped or stole Kitty from her parents.  Where is that What If where Kitty just stays home?

Issue ends with the X-Men needing to take the fight to the rest of the Hellfire Club.  Storm mentions how there is a dark side to the Phoenix.

Letters Page had letters from Phillip Albinus from Kings Park, New York and David Stallman from Covina, CA.

Back cover ad is for the original Star Trek Motion Picture, it isn’t very good.

. . .

Happy Mother’s Day to my wife, my own mother and all of mothers out there!  None of us would be here, without you.  Literally
