What If the Phoenix had not Died?

I always say, you can tell something with how many pages an issue of What If commits to the original timeline.  For this issue, they commit five pages.  Sometimes all Utau the Watcher needs is a simple sentence explaining the concept of the issue, and other times, he needs five pages to tell you what happened originally.

So in this timeline, the X-Men still fight the Imperial Guard on the Blue Area of the Moon.  Instead of Phoenix taking her own life, this time the Imperial Guard defeats both Scott and Phoenix.

Phoenix is given a lobotomy to take away her telepathic powers.  Once home, Jean makes the X-Men tea as her contribution to the team.

Days later, she is the Danger Room operator.  Kitty Pryde has now joined the team.  She won’t live long enough to regret it.

Xavier telepathically summons the X-Men to his office.  Phoenix likes having a voice in her head again.

Lilandra, Xavier has the nerve to stay in contact with her!  Also, she has the nerve to ask a favor!  Galactus and his herald, Terrax, are about to devour a planet.  Well, Galactus will do the consuming.  Terrax just does the scouting.

The planet is in Shi’ar space, but the X-Men are closer to it than Lilandra’s forces.  Phoenix believes they should go, so they go.

While there, the X-Men don’t stand a chance against Terrax and the power cosmic.  Terrax is about to kill Cyclops when Phoenix gets so mad that it regains its powers.

This gets Galactus’ attention and the two entities fight.  Phoenix destroys his stuff and he agrees to leave.

Once home, things don’t go back to normal.  First, Days of Future Past happens sort of.  The assassination attempt happens but Phoenix squashes it quickly.

At the mansion, Kitty is all by herself.  Storm hangs out with her adult sister, Phoenix.  Colossus is too modest to make a move on the younger Kitty.  Kurt and Wolverine are best friends.  Wolverine wonders why Phoenix is still with Scott, she should be with a killer like him.  Which is odd, as don’t killers like being the only killer in the family?

Kitty stays being a good student.  She works closely with Xavier.  He keeps getting painful migraines.

Phoenix begins controlling her powers, even on a microscopic level.  She hopes this will ward off any dark urges.  Though nightly, she is destroying small asteroids.

Wolverine notices these night exists as does Kitty.  Scott isn’t as they are having sex often.

Sentinels are unleashed on the world.  Phoenix lets the fight go on long enough until she gets bored, then she straight destroys the robots.

Later, she consumes a star – uh oh!

When she comes home, Kitty confronts her and this happens :

What If V1 27 Kitty Alive

What If V1 27 Kitty Dead

That is right, Phoenix cremates Kitty on the spot!  The X-Men don’t think that is cool, at all.

In true What If fashion, she kills the entire team.  Colossus tries a fastball special but Phoenix turns Wolverine right round and he stabs Colossus dead.  She then drags Wolverine’s body into what is left of Kurt’s burning corpse – Wolverine doesn’t fight this.

Once Phoenix kills Cyclops, for daring to stop her, she destroys the planet we call, Earth.

So, good thing Phoenix took her own life back in the proper timeline.

Big Brother 16 : Sunday – August 17, 2014

Who will Derrick and Frankie nominate?  Who wins the final Battle of the Block?

Get Excited!

Caleb wants Donny nominated.  Derrick doesn’t and he doesn’t want Victoria nominated, as well.

Has Derrick had a mustache, this whole time?  Or for a while?  I don’t care for it.

Cody.  Never throw competitions!

Victoria is so happy to not be nominated, for once.

They have Jenga in the house?  A little sad to play by yourself.

I don’t mind Derrick’s quasi-beard, its just his moustache.  It needs to connect.

Production finally got to put Adriana’s image on screen.  I like how everyone’s response to the picture was total surprise.  No one knew who she is.  She wrote Frankie his letter.

Oh yeah, Donny should be super safe with his two Team America partners as HoH.

Team America Task – Steal some clothes of each houseguest and start a neighborhood watch.  Good be fun.

Detonators resort to picking Skittles to see who is nominated.

How nice is it to be in the jury house?  Knowing no one is watching, unless there is an actual camera in front of you.

Cody, Christine is way married!

That would never happen to me.  I would never be in a room by myself with a lady.  There will always be at least one other person in the room.  That’s just me.  I’m way married.

A possible back door plan to get rid of Zach.  He’s not that big of a threat, just go after him.

Donny’s mouth and eyes are so wide, as Derrick explains the whole Skittles nonsense.  Hopefully, Skittles gives these guys a year’s worth of Skittles.

Donny is onto the large alliance.

Nominations :

Derrick – Donny & Christine

Frankie – Caleb & Cody

They really did this nomination ceremony for Victoria’s benefit.

Frankie’s speech was fantastic and amazing!

Production should throw something to give Christine a reason to try to win it.  Like some sweet cash.

Cody’s first nomination, thus, first Battle of the Block.  That leaves Derrick has the only person to never be nominated.  No one is even thinking of that, as he has deals with everyone.

Hey, they brought back the Big Black Box.  It must play well on television.

Donny figured out Christine is throwing it.  Good job!

Donny won!  Awesome!

Frankie is the official HoH.

Zingbot, yay!  Kathy Griffin, yay?

TMNT Episodes

I don’t watch every episode of the newest show but if the info box on the DVR makes it seem like an important episode, I watch those.

The episode “Vengeance is Mine” was so good!  They really do an amazing job there.  This newest show does a great job of keeping the stakes as high as possible.

Thanks to TMNT 2012 for hosting this video.

I wouldn’t say this is my favorite episode of the series but I do like the Leo / Karai and the Donatello / April relationships.

My favorite episode from the 2003 series is, without a doubt, Shredder Strikes Back two parter, with Leonardo taking on the entire Foot Clan.  So awesome!

Thanks Donnies Ninja Pizza for combining the two episodes!

It is how the first live action movie should have been, with Leo instead of Raph.

Can’t say I have a favorite episode from the original series, except for maybe some of the Technodrome / High Stakes episodes.

The awesome, Turtles Forever, shouldn’t count but I do love it.

Thanks to TMNT Entity

http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2009/12/25-greatest-moments-in-tmnt-history.html

for reminding me of some great episodes and moments!

I’m a sucker for anything that comes close to the amazing moment from Leonardo 1 where he fights the entire Foot Clan and does amazing up to the point of being overwhelmed by sheer numbers plus exhaustion.

I get why the first live action movie went with Raph for the fight but it should have been Leo.

My favorite moment from a film has to be, without a doubt –

Thanks to Otis’ Crappy Stuff for hosting the video.

They did a great job of not promoting this in the commercials as when it happened on screen, I couldn’t believe we were going to witness this great moment.

So amazing!

So the 80s cartoon had Shredder & Splintered

Thanks to James’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoons for hosting the video.

Get Shredder

Thanks to TheCartoonMan for hosting this video!  (the previous poster took theirs down)

Shredder finally gets a win and it is big!

My favorite of the first few seasons, might be – Maltese Hamster, I like Donatello’s Film Noir style voiceover

Thanks to LoveBerryTV

Looking over the list of episodes, several of them came to mind that I enjoyed.  The Lotus Blossom episodes and the ones with Usagi Yojimbo are also good.

I thought it would be fun to show the first and final episodes of the first two series –

Oh how far that show got in ten seasons!  I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the updated theme song sequence

ROM Spaceknight 18

ROM 18

Writer Bill Mantlo

Storytellers

Artist Sal Buscema

Inker and Editor Al Milgrom

Inker Frank Giacoia

Letterer Michael Higgins

Colorist Ben Sean

Inspiration and Assistance Chris Claremont & Jo Duffy

Cover Artist Frank Miller

Cover Dated May 1981

We conclude our two part visit to ROM Spaceknight and the mutant that is Hybrid’s origin!

For anyone who wants to follow along, here is the website to do so :

http://www.statuemarvels.com/f566/rom-spaceknight-18-vs-x-men-entire-issue-27694.html

Last issue ended with the X-Men showing up to protect who they think is an innocent 15 year old boy from a killer robot.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 1

Wolverine acts way crazier in this issue than I think he ought to be written as.  He is constantly working his own hero name into the conversation and it seems odd for him to be referring to himself in the third person.

There are two whole pages dedicated for recapping the previous issue.  The 80s!

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 2

A blizzard starts coming down.  Kurt thinks Storm should have a better control over her powers, she tells him that it isn’t her doing.

Wolverine slashes ROM and ROM feels utter pain.  Wolverine is out to kill the poor guy, and all over a misunderstanding!

Kitty is surprised, as I am, that Wolverine seems to be so berserk.  We learn that Hybrid can read minds as well.

Wolverine calls Colossus, Man of Steel – which I’m surprised isn’t a nickname that is used more for the Russian.

Wolverine also starts the first of three instances where he detects a greater evil but can’t quite place it but he knows it isn’t ROM but for some reason, he will keep fighting ROM as if that is where the source of the evil is.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 3

Poor ROM wonders if he has to keep fighting Earth’s superheroes as he met Jack of Hearts in issue 12 of his own series.  I wouldn’t recommend seeking that issue out as Jack of Hearts is horrible.  Or at least, when he was part of the Avengers during Goeff Johns’ run and died in Bendis’ Avengers Disassembled, I didn’t miss him.  I probably just never ‘got’ the character but is that really on me?

Turns out that Hybrid has been manipulating Storm’s weather powers to make the blizzard worst but she is able to at least make it bearable.

ROM sees that Jimmy has reverted to his Hybrid true form and tries to warn Kitty as she has been holding Jimmy this entire time – trying to protect him.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 4

Kitty can’t hear ROM’s warning, with the wind gale.  ROM comes charging at her, to safe her, but she freaks out and phases through him.  The panel of him quickly on his knees and the caption of how intense the nausea he is feeling, is palpable.  Which I guess I don’t quite know ROM’s deal.  They keep calling him a cyborg but how much of him is made up of robot parts and how much is humanoid?  Or is he like a Dalek, and is a little dude in a metal can?

That’s another thing, so the X-Men are here to locate a new mutant.  They see ROM and just assume he is an evil mutant in a robot body.  How often has that happened to them before or since?  I can’t think of any examples.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 5

Thus begins some great confusion, made worst by the weather.  Essentially, everyone has to figure things out on their own and fight their own battles.

Hybrid starts choking ROM with his mind powers.  ROM tries to fire his Neutralizer but Colossus thinks ROM is aiming at Kitty and does the dumbest thing.  He tackles Hybrid, and as thanks, gets force reverted back to his human form and Hybrid starts choking him!

Kurt starts giving Colossus CPR to try to save him.

Wolverine, again, senses true evil but sees ROM, wonders why he keeps holding back and yet again, starts trying to fight the greatest spaceknight of them all.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 6

Then comes probably my three favorite panels of the comic.  Kitty realizes that ROM is the good guy and that must mean that Jimmy is the bad guy.  She still hasn’t seen Hybrid yet.  The three panels of her going from – curious to suspicious to utter shock, are amazing and Buscema really knows what he is doing with pacing.

I know people seem to think John Buscema is the bigger name of the two brothers but I’ve always been a much bigger fan of Sal’s work.  I’m sure I only own or have an read John’s work on a rare occasion.

Probably doesn’t have to be mention, but I felt the need to defend Sal’s legacy and my preference.  Sometimes a man has to do what a man has to do.

Hybrid also has commented that he will use Kitty has the first of his many breeding opportunities.  Which is way gross!  He will later have the same plan for Mystique, Destiny and Rogue.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 7

Kitty, or Sprite as her teammates insist on calling her, scolds herself for being scared.  She’s an X-Man now and has to go on the offense.  So she turns a snowmobile toward Hybrid and he counters by breaking it into its base components and throwing it back at her.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 8

She luckily phases through the pieces but the blizzard is hurting her concentration, so she needs to change tactics.

Just then, she bumps into Wolverine, who is still out for blood. She finally tells him that he is after the wrong guy.  The two X-Men see Hybrid knock ROM’s gun out of his hand.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 9

Wolverine gets the bright idea that the gun must be an effective weapon and tries to fire it at Hybrid.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 10

Instead of firing, the force backfires onto Wolverine as a type of security measure.  We’ll see why ROM needs a security measure later in the issue.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 11

Kitty figures the gun has to be used and that she might be able to do what the reckless Wolverine couldn’t.  Due to the way her powers work, she is able to manipulate the weapon and fires it at Hybrid.

ROM tells her to change the setting of the gun so that it is on full force.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 12

This tears Hybrid to pieces, which are also even grosser than his whole.  There is one bad side effect to this, doing so leaves a portal open to the limbo dimension that ROM sends all Dire Wraiths to.

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 13

Who goes through the portal?  ROM does!  He has tasted his own medicine, and has found it to be … bitter!

ROM 18 Kitty Pryde 14

The gun overwhelms Kitty and she drops it.  The X-Men gather around her, as far as they are concern, they have done everything they can do.

There is a Hostess Fruit Pie ad starring Thing in Earthly Delights.

As they walk away, we see that the Neutralizer is just laying there on the snow.  Without it, ROM is stuck in limbo!

Which I don’t own the next issue.  The next issue of ROM that I own is 31, and by then, he has escaped limbo.  I’ve already reviewed ROM 32, which is when Hybrid returns, so even he escapes his fate from this issue.

Of my eight issues that I own of ROM Spaceknight – we now have reviewed three of them.  The other issues are 45, 65, 66 and Annual 3.  Not sure when we’ll get to those but one of these days.  Annual 3 could be as soon as two years from now!  Exciting!

. . .

Also, for any Batman : Arkham City fans out there – Today is St. Roch’s Day!  The only holiday in August!

Thanks to YouTuber PenMaster3000 for hosting the video!

Big Brother 16 : Thursday – August 14, 2014

Who went home?  Who are the new HoH?  Let’s figure it out together!

Julie Chen wearing an appropriate dress and has a decent hairstyle.

Nicole is the first former HoH to be nominated.  Only took six weeks for the house to fall for Production’s scheme.

Voice over guy said that Frankie had a grande secret.  We have to see her on the show soon, right?

Oh that’s right, Christine / Caleb / Frankie are going to go to a football game.

Day 56, is tonight’s live episode.

But first!

Nicole looks very pretty tonight, in that red dress.

It always amazes me how fast someone can forgive in this game.  Frankie and Caleb are getting along, as if one of them didn’t purposely try to throw a competition.

Aw, Donny crying.  Did they show us who were the Have Nots?  Donny and Zach are two of them.  Fear the Beard!

Are Victoria and Christine really going to be the last ladies left?

There is talk of getting rid of Donny!

Nicole is dressed to go home.  Donny is dressed to compete.

Dallas Cowboys Training Camp.  How much did they pay to be the spotlighted team?

Jerry Jones is the President /Owner of the team.

I thought Caleb was big but Jason Whitten is gigantic!

Amazing how the cheerleaders didn’t make an appearance.

Wow, that was a five minute commercial for NFL on CBS.

Don’t talk about the drama, Chenbot!

Speeches –

Nicole got shout outs and was nice to the house

Donny did the same.

Lame speeches, so they already know who is going home.

Votes :

Caleb – Nicole

Zach – Nicole

Cody – Nicole

Victoria – Nicole

Nicole is going home

Frankie and Victoria had a fun hallway interaction

6 – 0 votes

Two HoH still

What is it about the Amazing Spider-Man 2 costume that I love so much?  The eyes are wider and whiter.  The red seems to really pop.  It just looks like it jumped out off of the page.

If I had my way, on Tuesday, we would be owning Captain America Winter Soldier and Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Donny and Victoria need to win HoH.

Nicole outwearing Chenbot, both in red.

Such an awkward interview.  Especially the Adriana Grande question.

Nicole has been watching since she was eight!  I’ve been watching since I was 25.  Not as impression.

Poor Nicole had to suffer a Hayden question.

Someone is definitely coming back into the house.  I suspect it will be the very last person who was evicted.

HoH competition

Ghost Zombies in the mirror!  Nicole’s reaction was exactly what Production wanted.

I suspect Frankie’s was fake.

I wish that this had nothing to do with a competition and it was just a screwed up thing to do to the houseguests.

I like the concept of the news reports.

My wife just pointed out that there has been no endurance competitions.  Maybe because Caleb is still there?  It would

Quiz Show :

Out on first round – Caleb

Third Round – Donny and Victoria are out!  There goes that plan

Fourth Round – Zach

Three left!  Cody, Derrick and Frankie.  One just has to get a question wrong.

Round Seven – All three got it wrong

Round Eight – Cody out

Derrick and Frankie are the HoH!

Chenbot is going to interview Rachel.  Shame it isn’t Jeff interviewing her.

Team America Tasks seem dumb – Hide an item of each houseguest and organize a neighborhood watch OR keep someone awake for 24 hours straight

Rachel looks goood!  She should just do a monologue.

Rachel, of course, loves Zankie

No way does a lady win this season.

No Brendan question?  Or baby questions?

ZINGBOT on Sunday! Wooooo

This is the last double HoH

Also, who goes home next is eligible to return.

They have not promoted a week’s worth of shows like this in a while.

. . .

So we said goodbye to my second favorite lady of the season.

BB16 Brittany Nicole

Can I really root for Victoria?  Time will tell!

BB16 Nicole Red Dress

BB16 Rachel Reilly

Thanks to this blog for having these last two pictures :

Big Brother 16 : Wednesday – August 13, 2014

Posted by John Klein III on August 14, 2014

Who won the Power of Veto Competition.  Let’s find out!

Glad they replayed Zach and Frankie’s “You’re a Liar.  I’m a safe liar” exhange as I replayed it in my head a couple times since Sunday.

Zach and Frankie are just yelling a regular conversation.

Caleb and Cody join the conversation, to clear the air.

Frankie reveals he is Adriana Grande’s older brother and he is a YouTube personality.  I like how Derrick barely knows who she is.

That is funny, Derrick calling Frankie out for lying the whole game.

Frankie is playing for a charity.

Frankie gathers the gals.  Victoria is super excited!  Seems like Nicole is also vaguely familiar with Adriana as well.  So funny.

I disagree with Zach that Frankie is guaranteed the win.  Fan favorite, sure but not the overall winner.

I wonder how Donny reacted to the ‘news’

Wow, Derrick and Victoria have been having a secret friendship.

Veto Players :

Christine – Derrick

Zach – Caleb

Donny – Nicole

Production found a way to put Victoria in a coconut bra.

OTEV!!!  We love Otev.

For some reason Production gets a past houseguest or a celebrity.  This time, it is Gilbert Gottfried.

He’s a penguin.

My wife wonders if they are combining Otev and Zingbot.  I hope not as I love Zingbot.  Though it almost died last year.

Out first – Donny

Donny seems to be the target for the week.

Out second – Nocole

Out third – Christine

Hopefully no one pulls an Enzo and almost kills someone (Regan)

Out fourth – Derrick

Final round : Zach or Caleb

Zach won on an Amber question.  That has to burn Caleb.

Otev = Veto

We’ve seen Frankie in his underwear more than anyone else in the house.  Maybe ever?

Zankie may be back together.  It is fake but they both know that.

Was the Team America task forfeited?

Zach updates Victoria, on everything!  Her first game talk

Poor Victoria, she is a month late on the Detonators news.

Victoria tells Zach that she told Derrick everything.  But what could that even consist of?

#UndercoverCop

HOUSE MEETING!!!  Oh Derrick, it was resolved before the meeting

Has there been a not awkward house meeting?

Derrick NEEDS to win the game.  Or deserves the win.  His speech will be amazing.

Team America mission, will not be able to be done.  Donny is on the block.  They can’t get someone to volunteer to go up and vote them out.  That is two weeks / challenges in a row.

Oh Christine, don’t get played.

Are Christine and Nicole still best friends?

Zach trying to sell some Fruit Loop Dingus shirts.

Zach made a nice solo speech.

Christine got played and now Nicole is the replacement nominee.  Reminds me of Nicole nominating Donny based on lies.

Derrick put it best – Donny, King of Vetos or Nicole, Queen of HoH

I don’t want Nicole to go home but to make my wife happy – she gots to go!

. . .

Wil Heuser has done another BB16 Saga, episode 5!

Inspired by Drunk History, a show on Comedy Central program that I just love.  Whenever Comedy Central airs a marathon, I usually record every episode and rewatch them.  That Derek Waters, has found a show that has captured my attention.

The show started off on Funny or Die, with seven episodes

http://www.funnyordie.com/drunkhistory

Then Comedy Central has aired two seasons of it, with a third already being committed.

What I like about the Wikipedia page is that it has links to the historical events, so if you wanted to learn more, you can with easy links.

Film : Guardians of the Galaxy

Posted by John Klein III on August 13, 2014
Posted in: Film, Reviews. Tagged: Guardians of the Galaxy. 4 Comments

Guardians of the Galaxy film poster

My wife took me to the Guardians of the Galaxy film.

Going into the film, my only concern was that I wanted Rocket and Groot to come off well.  Also, if I could learn more about Star Lord, that would be pretty cool.

I was pretty relieved that Rocket and Groot came off superbly.  Chris Pratt as Star Lord, is both charming and fantastic.

In the sequel, I am hoping they can cast Ellen Page in an ‘unnamed’ role, that would be pretty awesome.  If the two characters are still together in three years, which could be doubtful.

The cast was pretty awesome.

Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, must have been the best gig he has ever had.  By far, my favorite role of his – with maybe Boiler Room as my second favorite.

My wife really liked Groot, he was the best part of the movie for her.  If they make a plush version of him, I will totally buy one.

Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket.  I like how both actors adoped voices for the characters.  It wasn’t just their regular voices and they wasted a few hours in a recording both.  Cooper gets the opportunity to take Rocket through every emotion.  If they wanted to spin off a Rocket / Groot film, I would totally support that.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora.  I did not know she was the adopted daughter of Thanos, I can only imagine that must be how the comic is.

Which, I must say, it was nice to go to a comic book movie relatively clean.  They could have been completely off from the comic and I wouldn’t really have noticed.

Though this film does feature one of the Infinity Gem.  It bugs me so much that they are called, stones, in this film.  Are they waiting until they are added to a gauntlet before calling them, gems.

I also could not tell which gem was in the movie.  On the way home, I was trying to name them.  I didn’t realize that four of them paired well with each other.  Which explains why I couldn’t name the sixth one.  Mind / Soul.  Space / Time.  Power.  I couldn’t remember Reality, at all.  Wikipedia states that the Power gem was used in the film, but I thought all it did was make you the strongest one that there is.

Typing of Thanos, voiced by Josh Brolin, was very impressive to see.  When the advisor, played again by Alex Denisof, showed up – I leaned over to my wife to explain that Thanos was the purple faced guy from the end of Avengers.  Which was unnecessary as Thanos was not only seen but given a voice and an excellent scene.

Portraying Thanos’ daughter, Nebula, was Karen Gillen.  Who may be the most famous person to come out of Doctor Who.  Not sure who else would even be in the running for the title.  Most either fade away outside of the convention circuit, or make a few appearances in film and television but never to any real fame.

Karen, who I totally love, did an amazing job being one of the villains.  She is going to be the star of ABC’s Selfie, which also stars John Cho.  No way that show goes to a second season with both of their movie careers, but it should be a nice done in one season type of a show.  Not every series lends itself to multiple seasons.

I thought they got Arthur Durvill as Michael Rooker’s right hand man, but turns out, that actor is Sean Gunn of Gilmore Girls fame.  Also, the director, James Gunn’s brother.

I feel like I saw James Gunn’s name through out the opening credits.  He directed and co-wrote the film, as well as I’m sure he is one of the producers.

I also saw Stan Lee’s name as one of the Executive Producers, and that took me out of the film for a few minutes.  I get that Marvel can never pay him enough for all that he contributed and co-contributed to the Marvel mythos.  I knew he didn’t create any of the team members of the film.  I did like how those creators were given special credit at the end of the film.

Guardians of the Galaxy comic creators credits

So while the rest of the opening credits rolled, I was trying to remember which characters were expected to appear.  I associate so many of the cosmic characters with Jim Starlin, but Stan Lee and Jack Kirby with 104 issues of the Fantastic Four – essentially created everything in the Marvel Universe.  Stan Lee co-created Ronan the Accuser and The Collector.  Ronan with Kirby and The Collector with Don Heck.

Ronan the Accuser, played by Pushing Daisies’ Lee Pace – was a pretty thankless role until the ending.  Which has to be the best, or at least one of the best, conclusions to an epic confrontation done on film.

The Collector was Benicio del Toro, who I didn’t recognize was that actor at the end of Thor 2.  Probably as I understood every word he said, as opposed to how he often mutters must of his lines.

The final member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, is Dave Bautista as Drax.  I know him as WWE’s Batista.  Heck, I even read his autobiography.  I looked online and found this list of his top ten matches :

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/396619-batistas-top-10-matches-in-his-entire-wwe-career

I remember the Orton and Triple H matches, but must have missed out on the other ones.

Drax got some great lines in the film.  I know the character to be a not smart / foolish character.  This film did a good job of making him sound smart, but having him not understand simple gestures or metaphors.  The moment Star Lord moved his finger across his own neck, and how Drax doesn’t know what that means, was so funny.  Why would I touch his neck with my finger?  I could have used maybe ten more jokes like that.  We only got one more, about how nothing goes over his head, his reflexes are too fast.

One of the great aspects of the film is hearing the various aliens and locations being said.  It amazes me that once they close the book on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if they ever do, they will have two cosmic movies with the Guardians and a third with Avengers 3.  How crazy is that?

The Kree are mentioned.  We visit Knowhere.  Which I pronounced it as No-Where but they say it as Now-Here, which also works.

The main location was the main planet of the Nova Corp.  I kept looking in the background for any sign of Nova, like a helmet or paintings – I didn’t see any.

John C. Reilly as Rhoman Dey, he was funny and really fit well in this film.  Playing his boss, Nova Prime herself, Glenn Close – who I will forever love for being in Big Chill.

I really liked the prison scenes, it really brought the team together.  The stand out of course, being Rocket coming up with the plan and just watch Groot in the background.

I also like how they worked getting the team into one color scheme.  Yellow in prison and Red in the final scenes.

It was great to see Star Lord’s helmet thing in action, it is just a breathing mask.  I didn’t mind that he only wore it in a limited capacity.  Also great to see his boots in action.  It felt like his first issue of his current series was completely inspired by the film.

Oh, the music of the 60s/70s and the respect for Kevin Bacon – loved it!

Comic Book Resources has the list of songs that make up the cassette tape :

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=54539

The lineup of songs is epic, in terms of pop touchstones from their era: Swedish rockers Blue Swede’s 1974 smash hit cover of “Hooked On a Feeling”; “Go All the Way,” the 1972 breakthrough hit for songwriter/lead singer Eric Carmen’s early band The Raspberries; “Moonage Daydream,” David Bowie’s 1971 glam rock ode to an alien messiah; blues rocker Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” from 1971, with vocals by future Jefferson Starship singer Mickey Jones; the ethereal, choir-tinged “I’m Not In Love,” 10cc’s soft rock chart-topper from 1975; “Come and Get Your Love,” a 1974 R&B smash from the Native American group Redbone; 1976’s explosive proto-punk “Cherry Bomb,” signature song of the all-ladies lineup of The Runaways, co-penned by band member Joan Jett; 1979’s ubiquitous “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” the one major pop hit for future musical theater whiz Rupert Hine; the uplifting soul staple “O-o-h Child,” a 1970 hit for the Five Starships; the bona fide classic “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” from 1967, featuring soaring vocals by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell; and another definitive Motown track from 1969, the high-energy “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5, featuring then-11-year-old lead vocalist Michael Jackson. (Norman Greenbaum’s enduring 1969 gospel/psychedelic rock fusion “Spirit in the Sky” also appears on the soundtrack album, but not in the film.)

Nice to see Dijimon Hounsou acting again.  I only know him from Blood Diamonds – a lousy movie, but besides that, I saw him in the few scenes of my wife’s show, Life in the Fab Lane, as he was Kimora’s husbandish role at the time.

Okay, the post credit sequence.  So great that now that Disney now owns Lucas Film, they own the film rights and the old footage of Steve Gerber and Val Mayerick’s greatest creation.  I am referencing the Seth Green voiced, Howard the Duck.  I really should see that first film again.  I type, first, but could there really be a second?  I did enjoy the credit right afterwards with his creators.  Especially with how much work Gerber put into claiming as much ownership of the character that he could.

For the sequel, I’m not sure where they will go.  In the movie, they set it up so that they will be looking for Star Lord’s father.  The Nova Corp makes it seem like he is part of an ancient alien race but I thought the Spartax – while not the most famous alien race, was at least known.  I get it is the Marvel Cinematic Universe so the rules are different but it seems odd with how easily accessible the comics are.  Maybe to play off of the ‘Lord’ in Quill’s hero name?

Also, with most of the Nova Corps being killed – this probably sets up needing one guardian with all of their power.  A Nova, if you would.

ROM 17

Writer Bill Mantlo

Storytellers

Artist Sal Buscema

Letterer Michael Higgins

Colorist Ben Sean

Consultant Chris Claremont

Cover Artist Frank Miller

Cover Dated April 1981

You can read along thanks to this website :

http://www.statuemarvels.com/f566/rom-spaceknight-17-featuring-uncanny-x-men-entire-issue-27685.html

ROM 17 Kitty Pryde 1

Issue opens at the X-Mansion.  Cerebro’s siren is going off.  The X-Men come in, Kitty – proving her use as the introductory character that she is – asks what is a Cerebro.

The issue of Uncanny X-Men that came out in April 1981 is issue 144 so this issue probably takes place before that as well as before Days of Future Past.  Kitty appears at the X-Mansion at the end of Uncanny X-Men 138, so it may take place between that and 139.  For anyone who is interested.

The captions and later Xavier makes a big point of stating that there is five X-Men, which harkens me back to the Original Five X-Men.

Cyclops – Jean Grey – Angel – Beast – Iceman

Storm – Kitty Pryde – Nightcrawler – Wolverine – Colossus

Five really is a decent number for a squad.  Whedon / Cassaday’s Astonhishing started with just five – Cyclops – Emma – Kitty – Wolverine – Beast Though five hurts when you are trying to create a team on Ultimate Alliance but Kitty wasn’t playable in that game so you could make this team toward the end of the first X-Men Legends game.  Not the best team going forward as the game didn’t make Emma as strong as she is, so she is mostly a fighter and coupled with Wolverine and Beast, that is a lot of close range fighters.  But I do love playing as the Astonishing team, so I always leave a permanet saved file right there so that I can just play with that team as the game doesn’t have a New Game Plus mode so we can’t play with all the characters and their proper levels from the beginning of a second play through.

ROM 17 Kitty Pryde 2

Wolverine is very sassy in these first two pages.

Cerebro has detected a new mutant but their origins seem to be odd, so Xavier sends his team to go and investigate.  Once they are gone, Xavier gets a panel to himself where he prays that they travel safely as he has lost too many X-Men already.  Which is a clear reference to the Phoenix dying at the end of the Dark Phoenix Saga that would have ended just recently.

Cut to Clayton, West Virgina.  Dr. John Stennis shows up to the Marks farm and first notices all of the dead livestock.  Deadstock?

Turns out that Jacob Marks has a secret.  He’s a Dire Wraith, the sworn enemy of ROM and his Spaceknights of Galador!  15 years ago, his human wife, Marjorie, gave birth to their son, Jimmy.  That’s right, ya’ll, this is the origin story of the grossest looking fool in the Marvel Universe – Hybrid!

Dr. Stennis is disgusted to see Marjorie aged to what appears to be a hundred years ago, which she was barely 38 so that is quite the shock.

Jacob has to reveal his true form to the doctor, and then the doctor sees Jimmy in his current state.  Buscema does a great job of just casting Jimmy’s shadow on the wall and that image doesn’t make any sense.  It does once Jimmy is revealed but before that, it just looks like a mess.

The doctor runs away.  Jacob wishes that Jimmy would have let him at least take his mother to the hospital.  Jimmy wants to hurt his father for taking the ‘smooth-skinned sow’ as a wife.  Which is pretty harsh words for one’s own mother.

Then we get to the ROM portion of the story as some of these characters are his supporting cast.  Others are just members of the town.  Silas Lane arrives at the Clark home.  He is shocked to see ROM sitting in a chair.  At this point, ROM has gotten a reputation for showing up, shooting dudes with a gun and leaving behind ash – it looks like he straight up kills people.  In reality, he is only shooting Dire Wraiths who have shape shifted to human form and sending them to limbo (but not Magik’s fun Limbo).

Jonathan Clark tells the truth to Silas, and Silas thinks this is the plot to a B-Film.  Jonathan is the father of Brandy, who I know is for sure a supporting cast member of the title.  Brandy’s finance, Steve Jackson, was going to marry her on their wedding day (as people do) when another Steve Jackson showed up at the wedding and shot the one standing near her at the alter and the fellow died.  I guess he did object.

Turns out that the man about to marry his daughter, was a Dire Wraith and Steve has been held hostage for a while until he escaped and saved his future bride.

Apparently in this town of Clairton, ROM has been slaying waste to a slew of Dire Wraiths.  Silas takes out a sleeve of index cards and asks if the names on the cards are the ones who have vanished.  Turns out that all but Jacob Marks are now gone.

Back in November 9, 1945, the Dire Wraiths took advantage of the fact that American soldiers were coming back from World War II and many were just showing up in various cities.  So they took human disguises and did the same thing.  They also gave themselves the same birthday.  Then with ROM going around banishing fools, they realized people will start writing obituaries and will notice that they all have the same birthday – which would be suspicious.

ROM believes that there is a Dire Wraith who is a high level officer in the government, who has started changing their birthdays but Jacob Marks’ was left unchanged.

So they know that Jacob Marks is a Dire Wraith but also that Marjorie isn’t as Sarah and others grew up with her since she was a child.  This disgusts ROM has that means their son, Jimmy, is a half-breed.  This has never been done before, so who knows what Jimmy’s deal is now.

ROM, Brandy and Steve race off to the Marks farm.  ROM tells them to stay back as Jacob and Marjorie come out of their home.  Jacob confesses to being a Dire Wraith.  ROM tells Brandy and Steve to quickly get Marjorie to a hospital.

Brandy is horrified to realize that if Steve hadn’t escaped, she would have married a Dire Wraith and could be in the same situation that Marjorie is in now.

Jacob then tells his origins (which I feel like we have already gotten for the most part but now done in chronological order – plus some extra information).  Jacob showed up in this sleepy town.  He married Marjorie, at first to just blend in and then later, grew to love her.  He resisted the idea of children at first but eventually was convinced that if he can love, so can his child.  Which is odd, I wonder how that actually worked.  On their wedding night, he just made up an excuse to not consummate their marriage and then kept making up excuses?  That doesn’t seem like something that could last years on end.

Eventually some elder Dire Wraiths learn of the birth of two races and came to see Jimmy.  They started teaching Jimmy the ways of the Dire Wraith.  Jimmy learns to hate the human race and starts being cruel to his mother.

One week ago, the elders quit coming and Jimmy started punishing his parents.  Also one week ago?  ROM sent the elders to limbo.

So that brings us to the present.

Jacob already knows that Jimmy is stronger than any previous Dire Wraith.

ROM goes inside the house to confront Jimmy.  The room is covered in ice.  What he sees is this :

Hybrid

A face that even a mother couldn’t love.  Before he looked like this (which he chose to discard his original form) he looked like a 15 year old blonde boy.

ROM and Hybrid start fighting.  ROM realizes that he doesn’t need to hold back as the normal banishing setting on his gun isn’t going to do much hard to Hybrid.  Hybrid has telepathic and telekinesis powers so he is a force to be reckon with.  ROM calls his gun, his Neutralizer.

Jacob tries to distract his son (and also to plead with him).  In thanks, he takes a pitchfork to the chest and dies.

ROM is about to set his gun onto the highest setting, right when Hybrid reverts to his human form.

There is a Hostess Twinkee ad with Spider-Man starring in The Rescue.

ROM 17 Kitty Pryde 3

The final page is the X-Men showing up to stop a mad robot from killing a little boy.  Kitty, who is going by Sprite, at this time, tells Jimmy that he is in safe hands.  He thinks to himself that this is working out perfectly.

I am reviewing issue 18 as Frank Miller does the cover for that so we will have to wait two days and see what happens next issue!

I do wonder, if Marjorie survives this, how does the town respond to her afterwards?  If she still looks like she is a hundred years old, they probably won’t give her much grief but if she reverts back to looking like she is 38, then that might change some things.  Like if she gives a different opinion, how quickly the town folk will throw in her face that she once had a freak family.  People can be so cruel sometimes!

There were moments here with the way Sal Buscema draws faces in 1981 that remind me how much his great and wonderful style hasn’t changed that much when he was the artist on Spectacular Spider-Man, from issues 134 to 238!  Which is from January 1988 to September 1996, a whopping eight years as the continuous artist on one comic.  That has to be a record, at the very least at Marvel.  So many storylines and moments Sal was part of and responsible for during that era.

He also was the first artist on Spectacular Spider-Man from issue 1 to 20, then he came back for 38 and was gone until 134.  At one time or another, I owned all of these issues before selling them.

Big Brother 16 : Sunday – August 10, 2014

Who are the dual HoH?  Who played in the Battle of the Block?

Let’s find out!

Hayden didn’t get any good bye messages.  Which I am sure, he didn’t mind.  Plus, once they go to jury, the good byes are as PC as can be.

Caleb’s short HoH reign, he doesn’t get to see pictures but still gets the snacks and letter from home.

I could be down for a cookie party, if the cookies are soft.

Oh Nicole, Christine isn’t in charge, at all.

Donny and Nicole need to work together.

Poor Nicole, she is pure emotion right now.  Glad she is trying to blow up Christine and Frankie’s games.

With this season, if the alliance doesn’t have a name – it isn’t a real alliance.

Oh Nicole, you are going against a five person alliance.  You, Donny and Victoria – are the only open minds left.  Even if the Detonators lost trust in each other – they still will stick with the final five deal.

HoH – trivia competition

Round One :

Cody v Nicole – Nicole wins

Victoria v Derrick – Victoria

Donny v Christine – Christine

Frankie v Zach – Zach

Round Two :

Nicole v Victoria – Nicole, the first HoH

Love how she invoked Rachel Reilly.  So happy!

Christine v Zach – Zach got the question wrong, Christine is the second HoH.  That room is going to be awkward.

Frankie should be super concern.

Remember those activity tracking bracelets?  I have to force remind myself about them.

Nicole has to be the bigger person with Christine.

Frankie, trying too hard.  Christine just staring at him.

I wish Zach would just go dark for a week

Once again, Production, if there is whispering – please just go ahead and subtitle that noise.

Seems like Nicole might have successfully knocked Frankie out of the Detonators.  I bet that doesn’t last.

Derrick making references to the Titanic sinking.  Too soon!

Derrick, the season’s best player.  #UndercoverCop

I forget what the house believes he does for a living.  Real estate broker?

Nominations :

Christine – Donny & Zach

Nicole – Caleb & Frankie

This is why you nominate who you want to go home.  No wasted weeks.

Zach calls out Christine and Frankie as liars.

Back dooring, doesn’t always work and when it doesn’t, oooof, that is not good.

Battle of the Block –

This reminds me, golf delayed the episode by an hour.  Golf and Football, pains in my arse!

How come Nicole didn’t get a NFL shirt?

Frankie, no one likes the smell of desperation

Nicole got a subtle NFL shirt.

Caleb is sitting out of the competition.

This must have been super awkward for the houseguests.

Come on, Donny and Zach!  You two can’t lose with such a handicap

Victoria looked a little cute in her NFL shirt.

Frankie won it, by himself.  Frankie crying.  He is safe. Caleb is safe.  Christine is safe.

Nicole got drenched in thick looking Gatorade.

Frankie said his sister’s name.  Now he is going to officially tell.  I can only imagine that the house finds it interesting for an hour or two.

TMNT : Coming Out of Our Shells

tmntComingOutOfTheirShells

The very first concert I’ve ever been to was the Ninja Turtles – Coming Out of Our Shells tour.  For the longest time, it was also the only concert I was at.

I was trying to find a tour date list online but the Internet failed me.

This great website :

http://turtlepedia.wikia.com/wiki/Coming_Out_of_Their_Shells

Has basically everything else!  The first date was August 17, 1990 and we must have saw it either in Arizona or California.  I remember the drive wasn’t forever.  I was eight.

My three favorite songs are :

April’s Ballad

Thanks to Mike E. Perez for hosting the video

Skipping Stones by Splinter

Thanks mckxm for hosting the video

No Treaties

Thanks the3ninjakids for hosting the video

I owned the cassette tape, the concert video and the making of the concert video.  I was pretty hard core Turtles back in the day.
