Lee Forrester

I was speaking to someone recently about how great of a character Lee Forrester is.  It made me want to see what was her latest appearance.  It was in X-Men Volume Two issues 16 through 19, way back in December 2011.  No wonder I hadn’t thought about her.

Thanks to our friends at comicbookdb.com, I now know that she has 29 proper appearances :

http://comicbookdb.com/character_chron.php?ID=4884

Of those 29, I own 20 of them, which is pretty impressive.  I own 70% of her appearances!

The ones I’m missing make sense –

New Mutants Volume One 23 & 26, don’t have Magik (but I own the surrounding issues)
Cable Volume One 11, 12 and 13 – why would I?  Except I do own the conclusion, issue 14.
X-Men Volume Two 12, 17, 18 and 19 – her latest and last storyline.

She dated Cyclops and then met and had a bit of a fling with Magneto.  Apparently she met Cable and was attracted to him until she found out he was her ex-boyfriend’s son all grown up.  That happens to the best of us.

When I did my review of Uncanny X-Men 143, I didn’t even know that was Lee Forrester’s first appearance.  I should have known that, looking back at it, as she just gets a quick introduction – in that classic Claremont style!

Her first name is really, Aleytys, which I imagine has to be heard to be believed.  Ah-Lee-Tis, maybe?

Wolverine 126

By Chris Claremont & Leinil Francis Yu

Inks Edgar Tadeo & Gerry Alanguilan

Colors Jason Wright

Letters Richard Starkings & ComiCraft/em

Cover Dated July 1998

Issue opens with Logan restating that Viper is his wife.  Or more precisely, that she is his fiance but it will be a very short engagement.

Wolverine 126 1 Lockheed

Logan’s lady friends are super upset, he’s going to marry a woman who just tried to kill them all.  Except that Viper wasn’t going to kill them, just set up Wolverine to maybe do it.  Kitty does seem to be taking it in good spirits.  Jubilee seems to be the most upset about the news.  Which is odd as she got off the easiest.  Though I guess she was hunted for the better part of the night so she is entitled to be upset.

Viper offers to have Jean and Psylocke prove that Logan isn’t being tricked into the agreement.  Since Viper is done answering questions, she begins to walk out of the room.  Kitty and Lockheed try to block her path but Viper keeps walking through the pair.

Wolverine 126 2 Kitty

Jean is upset as no one can marry Logan but her, I suppose.  She likes having him be her safety if her current marriage doesn’t work out – which it won’t but we’re still years away from that.

Wolverine 126 3 Kitty

Everyone goes home as they are horrible friends and don’t want to be there for Logan’s marriage.  All but Kitty ends up leaving, as she’s his best friend.  Lockheed left with Jubilee, there’s a story I wouldn’t mind reading.

Wolverine 126 4 Kitty

Wolverine explains the story of how he owed Viper a blood debt.  Seraph built the bar they are currently in.  A mission went south and Seraph allowed Sabretooth to kill her so that a Pre-Madame Hydra Viper and Logan could escape.  This is new back story.

Wolverine 126 A Kitty

As Kitty and Logan toast Logan’s upcoming wedding we see that Sabretooth has both Hydra and Hand goons.

Wolverine 126 B Kitty

Logan reflects on the Seraph adventure as Kitty comes into the room.

Wolverine 126 5 Kitty

Since they are on Madripoor, Logan dresses like Patch, but without the eye patch.

For the longest time, if you Googled “Kitty Pryde” you were guaranteed to see her in the above purple dress.  The years have been very kind to Kitty, as she looks stunning in that dress.

Wolverine 126 6 Kitty

Kitty tried to invite Tyger Tiger and Jessica Drew but they couldn’t be bothered to arrive.

Wolverine 126 7 Kitty

Viper doesn’t look too bad herself but for the first time, I’m getting Poison Ivy vibes from her.  Probably as she usually wears full body suit, she has her own look and style.  Here, her bust is exposed just like Poison Ivy’s but it is her wedding day so let’s all just support her.

The bride and groom get to say their “I Do”s and the minister is killed.

Wolverine 126 8 Kitty

Sabretooth is going to add another lady of Logan’s to his kill list but Viper isn’t any ordinary lady.  Viper would be pretty messed up if Kitty didn’t phase her in time.  Sabretooth lunges at Kitty but she straight trips him up.

Wolverine 126 9 Kitty

Sabretooth tries to taunt Kitty but Wolverine tackles him.  Kitty narrated last issue and now Logan is narrating this issue.  I wonder who narrates issues 127 & 128?

Logan tells Kitty to escape with Viper.

Wolverine 126 10 Kitty

This is the first Sabretooth v Wolverine fight since Logan lost his adamantium.

Viper is feeling all sorts of nauseous, even though Kitty phased her in time.

Wolverine 126 11 Kitty

Kitty watches as Sabretooth and Logan fall into the ocean.  Kitty is piecing together both Sabretooth’s new fighting style and that one time she phased through Wolverine, back in the day.

Wolverine 126 12 Kitty

Logan comes out, seemingly as the victor.  Kitty starts to piece it together, she knows that Sabretooth is play playing.

Wolverine 126 13 Kitty

To late, Kitty screams that Sabretooth has adamantium laced bones.  He was purposely fighting Wolverine in a way that wouldn’t involve his claws or direct contact with his bones.  Sabretooth breaks Logan’s claws, one of these Kitty will keep in time for Wolverine 100 and will mail one to Logan in X-Men 109.

I’m pretty sure Kitty has phased through Wolverine dozens of times and have never been shown to be ill after phasing through Logan.

Bullpen Bulletins.  Issues available June 3rd are –
Cable 57
Daredevil 378
Essential Spider-Man Volume 3
Fantastic Four 8
Ka-Zar 16
Maverick 13
Rampaging Hulk 1
Sensational Spider-Man 30
Thor 2
Uncanny X-Men 358
X-Men Manga 10

Wolverine 126 14 Kitty

Sabretooth is about to finally end Logan when Kitty phases through Sabretooth and frees Logan from his grip.

Wolverine 126 15 Kitty

Issue ends with Kitty pushing Logan over the ledge and is about to be killed by Sabretooth.  I do like how fierce she is, standing up to Sabretooth.

X-Men Legacy 269

Writer Christos Gage

Penciler David Baldeon

Inker Jordi Tarragona

Colorist Brian Reber

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

Cover Dated August 2012

Cover Artist Mark Brooks

I adore this cover so much!  I really like the addition of the recap page being barely visible.

Still working off my Father’s Day present my wife got for me from Mile High Comics.  This is the only Legacy issue that I bought from that purchase.

I do own issues 270 and 271, so one day, I will finish this storyline.

This issue takes place between either issues 5/6 of Avengers vs X-men or 7/8, there is no handy footnote nor checklist in the issue itself.

I found this helpful website :

http://philthec.blogspot.com/2012/06/avengers-vs-x-men-reading-order.html

That states that it comes during round eight :

Round 8: The Fall of Wakanda

052 Avengers vs. X-Men #8
053 New Avengers #27 (The Phoenix Prophecy)
054 X-Men Legacy #269
055 X-Men Legacy #270
056 Wolverine and the X-Men #14

So that’s pretty handy!

The final image of this post shows the details better but I noticed this on one of my rereads of the issue.  There are two fun costume decisions that were made for this issue.  I’m not sure if Baldeon gets the credit or if it was already determined when he got there.

The first one is something that hopefully got attention at the time.  Rogue’s shirt can be zipped all the way up to their throat.  That’s pretty impressive as that isn’t how most of her shirts fit her.

The second is that she has the same style of boots as Magik does.  There must have been a sale or something!

As much as I like Rogue’s look at this time, that does seem to be a lot of Xs.  Is it a good idea to have an X right on your chest?  It seems too much like a perfect bullseye.  At the time, Rogue only had her absorption power, and whichever power she obtained at the time.  So she isn’t nigh-invulnerable like she spent most of her superhero career.  Then she has Xs on her shoulder pads and on her belt.  I also like her scarf.

Inside front cover is for that Amazing Spider-Man game that I still want to play.

Onto the issue itself :

X-Men Legacy 269 Magik 1-1

China.  This is during the time when Magik has one fifth of the Phoenix Force.  Which was such an awesome moment!  She is looking over Iceman and Rogue’s progress.  I like the attention to detail to the Phoenix Five’s global plan.  One can’t just quickly change the agriculture as it will just collapse under itself.  So using Iceman’s ice powers, the ice will gradually melt and not be a shock to the landscape’s system.  A very clever plan.

I really do like Baldeon’s art here and Reber’s coloring makes the comic soar as well.

Rogue is happy that the X-Men, together, are making these world changes.

I really like Magik in this issue.  Sure the Phoenix brought out some of her inner demons and dark side but she is amazingly blunt and honest.  She was confident before but now she has a cosmic fire bird on her side.  Her comment about how the X-Men could accomplish more once they are no longer being hunted is spot on.

X-Men Legacy 269 Magik 2

I like Magik making sure Rogue is doing okay.  Thanks to her powers, they can essentially have the same X-Man in two places but Magik worries that it may be taxing Rogue.  Rogue can handle it.

You Can tell that those are the same boots there, with that extra flap material at the top.

Iceman calling Magik, boss, makes me smile.  She makes a big point about how she isn’t his boss but they are all united and equal.  Though, if she was being brutally honest, she is his superior in almost every way.  But she does make the point that she has had to tell him a hundred times to stop calling her, boss.  So I imagine it does get old after a while.  But that’s Iceman for you.

Rogue is on her way to New Orleans and borrows some of Iceman’s powers. He’s far too happy to help as Mardis Gras saved him during his students days, when he was hoping to be an accountant when he grew older.

Then there are a bunch of pages until Magik shows up again.

I like that Rogue is greeted kindly by soldiers.  She just froze the large lake that was causing the issue.  One of them recognizes a Mississippi accent and she tells him she is from Caldecott County.  The solider likes having a local hero helping out even more.  So much so, in fact, that he offers her the rest of his catfish lunch.  Which is pretty awesome of him to offer and for her to accept.

I adore the page of her just eating the catfish.  She really likes it, plus, it must be nice to just relax for once.  It doesn’t last long as that same solider, now that he has done something nice for her, informs her that there is a distress call.

Rogue agrees to investigate and creates an ice slide and gets out of there.  Turns out it is a flatscan dirty trick and Carol Danvers, as Ms. Marvel, is there to talk to Rogue.  Of course, if you once stole a person’s memories and powers, you don’t really anticipate that person just showing up to talk and Rogue punches her in the mouth.  To the mouth?  I’m not sure.

What follows is a pretty awesome sequence of the two women, with so much baggage, just talking.  Sure, they are fighting as well but that’s just because Rogue didn’t listen to Carol at first.  Rogue realizes that she is no match against Carol as Iceman’s powers are not so good – or at least, she isn’t experience with them.  She gets the idea, as horrible as it is, to just take Carol’s powers – which is pretty mess up.  Carol loses her mind for a moment, and starts shouting, how could you do that to me?  Which she is completely in the right about.  Rogue ruin both of their lives with that and that must have brought so many memories (or lack of memories) to poor Carol.  Now that she is Captain Marvel, but not at this point in publication, I feel weird typing Ms. Marvel.  I prefer Warbird but she, herself, has distance herself from that codename.

It isn’t until Carol starts using her energy blasts from her hands that I have the thought of why didn’t Rogue get that power?  Did Carol only get that power once she was made into Binary by the Brood?  My only real experience with her is with her time in Busiek’s awesome Avengers run and then reading the back issue appearances of her time with the X-Men – which was also spectacular.  That must be the reason.  I just so associate Carol with hand blasting that I never thought about why Rogue didn’t get that power.  That must be the reason though, its post-Binary.  Ooof, Carol has had a few codenames over the years.  People don’t seem to make fun of her for it like they do Kitty Pryde.

There is this great exchange when Rogue mentions that the X-Men have done more for the world’s actual good than the Avengers have ever even tried.  Carol rebuts this with how the changes are too fast and too sudden, they have not been earned.  Reminds me of Captain America and Superman’s exchanges in JLAvengers – where Cap thought Superman and his universe, did too much for humanity, whereas Captain America thought that the heroes place was just protecting it from harm.

Carol makes a reference to the incredible, It’s a Good Life, episode of Twilight Zone.  Which has a decent sequel in “It’s Still a Good Life” when they brought the Twilight Zone back in 2003.

Rogue states that if the Phoenix Five go bad, the X-Men will stop them, which is exactly what they try to do in AvX 11.

The fight ends when Rogue throws Carol into a body of water and keeps freezing it as Carol tries to break free of it.  Once she does, she’s exhausted.  Then they get a visitor.

X-Men Legacy 269 Magik 3

Magik has arrived to take Carol as their newest prisoner.  Carol comments on how Magik had a dark soul prior to becoming all powerful.  As if flattery would get her far.

Carol states that Illyana is her choice for going crazy first (she isn’t).  With this, Illyana slaps tape over Carol’s mouth to silence her.

Rogue starts asking if it is a good idea to put all of the Avengers into one prison.  The X-Brig won’t be able to house too many Avengers.

Magik tells her that she has made a prison that will hold anyone.  Rogue starts to question how she could build a prison when Magik cuts her off.  Illyana moved a piece of Limbo into this realm and that is what they are using as a prison.  Limbo on Earth sounds scary.

Illyana makes a chilling reference to how Limbo isn’t easy to escape, which is such a sad reminder of Magik’s origins.

Verkhoyansk Mountains, Russia.  I adore Magik’s line, of her trying to assure Rogue that she shouldn’t look so worried, the prison is quite secured.  It took me until my second read through to realize that Rogue’s worried expression comes from having a piece of Limbo in the Russian Mountain side.  Like, this is how far the Phoenix Five are willing to go to not be stopped.  If only that was as far as they were willing to go as Namor will later prove, they are willing to go much farther.

X-Men Legacy 269 Magik 4

See from that angle how much Rogue and Magik’s boots are the same?

Look how frightening Carol’s new prison cell is!  No wonder Rogue will spend the next issue or so trying to bust Carol out of there.  We’ll get to those eventually.

. . .

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wolverine 125

Cover Dated June 1998

We celebrate my wife and I’s eighth anniversary by celebrating not only Wolverine and Viper’s wedding but Chris Claremont’s return to Wolverine’s ongoing that he help launched.  When this issue was in the hype phase, there were rumors that this could be the issue that Wolverine regains his adamantium.  That doesn’t happen but he does gain something.

Issue opens with Jubilee running for her life.  She’s being chased by the Phoenix Force.

I’m recalling how this issue was great and the next one was pretty good then the last two issues of Claremont’s brief stint (we’ll be reviewing all four of these issues over the course of the next few days) as not ending on a high note.  Let’s see if my memory holds up.

Jubilee is treated to repeating what happened in Uncanny X-Men 251 (which I own and will review one of these days but not this month) where she freed Wolverine from a crucifiX.  Jubilee suspects they are not in the Australian Outback as she was in Chinatown only a few minutes ago.  Gateway is there but since he doesn’t talk, she can’t get any confirmation.  Jean Grey, with the Phoenix Force but wearing a full green version of one of her uniforms.  She implies that her and other women (we don’t get a full panel of who else is there but I can see Psylocke) have been gathered to serve a purpose.  Jubilee isn’t going to play that game as she keeps trying to drag Wolverine along.  At least he should be a tad lighter without the metal coating his bones.

In the catacombs under the city, Jubilee and Wolverine are confronted by – Tyger Tiger, Psylocke and Jessica Drew – also all dressed in green.  This was during the time when Jessica Drew hadn’t been Spider-Woman in years.  Jubilee uses her powers to flash a bright light and she is able to escape with Wolverine.

Wolverine 125 1 Kitty Pryde

The pair are caught off guard by Rogue and Yukio.  Yukio throws some daggers but Jubilee somehow strangely falls through the wall.

Wolverine 125 2 Kitty Pryde

This whole time, I’ve been reading the captions as if they belonged to Jubilee but it turns out, they belong to someone else.

Wolverine 125 3 Lockheed

The narration boxes belong to Jubilee’s predecessor, Kitty Pryde!  Kitty brought her good buddy, Lockheed, for this adventure!

Kitty is also in a green outfit but not a variation of any of her previous ones.  She isn’t really one to show off those legs.  I do like those short green gloves though.  Yu draws a sweet Lockheed!

Who is Kitty narrating this to?

Wolverine 125 4 Lockheed

Is this the first meeting of Jubilee and Kitty?  I would find that hard to believe except that Excalibur barely interacted with the rest of the X-Titles.  This issue came out June 1998, the same month Excalibur 121 came out so I imagine this was a good way to remind people of her connections before she rejoined the main title.

Jubilee must be still under some effect, a she seriously thinks Kitty is responsible for Jubilee’s trip through memory lane as that isn’t really in Kitty’s powerset.

Wolverine 125 5 Lockheed

Kitty knows that Viper is behind this latest scheme, to turn the women in Logan’s life against him.  Jubilee finally notices that Kitty has green hair and wearing a green outfit, so maybe Kitty is actually in on the plan.  Kitty explains that due to her powers, she was able to escape before being given Viper’s mind controlling poison.  Thus proving that Kitty is far better than those ladies who were put under.

Wolverine 125 6 Lockheed

Kitty wants Jubilee to lead them to Wolverine.  Since it took so much time to explain to Jubilee everything, Jean and Rogue are almost to their location.  Jubilee shouts for Gateway to teleport them out, just in time.

Wolverine 125 7 Lockheed

In the real Australia, Jubilee has some clothes stash away.  Jubilee gets in her classic yellow trench coat, pink sunglasses and what is clearly a homage to DC’s Robin’s outfit with the red shirt and green shorts.  We’ll see a full body shot on a below image.

Kitty has to borrow Jubilee’s clothes and Lockheed & Jubilee enjoy the fashion show.  Kitty starts to have a good time with it too.  Why does Jubilee even own that last outfit and why did Kitty even put it on?

Kitty eventually settles on a simple white shirt and a pair of blue shorts.

Kitty has an idea of where to find Wolverine.

Wolverine 125 8 Lockheed

Mount Logan, the highest point in Canada.  Kitty instructs Jubilee in taking the time to learn about her teammates and her environments.

See Jubilee in the bottom row of panels?  It doesn’t take much to realize that is clearly inspired by Robin’s costume.

Which was fun during Marvel vs DC when the two characters flirted with each other –

Marvel v DC Jubilee Robin

So during Amalgam when Batman and Wolverine were merged to create Dark Claw – it was awesome – it made perfect sense to combine Jubilee and Robin into –

Amalgam Sparrow Jubilee Robin

Sparrow!

Wolverine 125 9 Lockheed

Kitty hints about how Sabretooth killed Silver Fox in Wolverine’s cabin.  Which I can’t remember if that was a false memory or if that eventually did come to pass.

Kitty notices that Wolverine was here and not that long ago as his whiskey glass is still damp and his cigar is still fresh.

Behind Jubilee, a giant explosion occurs.

Wolverine 125 10 Kitty Pryde

Rogue arrives and Jubilee distracts her as Kitty puts her down.

Wolverine 125 11 Kitty Pryde

Tyger Tiger, who I’m glad Kitty name checks as I wouldn’t have recognized her.  I’m not that familiar with the character but she has a gun to Jubilee’s head so there isn’t much needed to know.  Kitty phases through Jubilee and tackles Tyger.  For her thanks, Tyger shoots Kitty to her face!

Wolverine 125 12 Lockheed

Luckily, it wasn’t a real bullet.  Instead Kitty’s entire body is encased with a substance that she can’t phased through.

Lockheed, the true hero that he is, jumps in front of Jubilee and spits hot fire so that Gateway can teleport the trio away.

Wolverine 125 13 Lockheed

Agarashima.  Somehow in Kitty’s estimation of time passing, Wolverine in that “short time” went from Canada to Tokyo.  That’s like an eleven hour flight, or so.

We finally get to see Wolverine! He doesn’t seem all that surprise to see his favorite lady friends.

Wolverine 125 14 Kitty

Jubilee barely gets time to shout to Logan that Viper is after him, when Yukio tries to throw daggers at him.  Logan and Yukio spar, as he clearly doesn’t want to hurt her.  While distracted with that fight, Psylocke ninjas behind him and with the focus totality of her telepathic powers, digs a psychic dagger into his freaking head!

When Logan wakes up, he sees all of his lady friends as snakes – which is either on purpose by Viper or a sign of how horrible Logan views his friends.  This transitions Logan into reminding himself of how Mariko died.  So a reference to Silver Fox and now Mariko’s dead body, I believe the only lady in Wolverine’s life that isn’t seen is Storm.  Storm, Carol Danvers and Mystique I guess, but this may be too early for Mystique to be seen.

Viper finally shows herself to Wolverine.

Wolverine 125 15 Kitty

Poor Jubilee went from Canada, Japan to now Madripoor in a span on an hour.  We finally get our entire cast in one place.

Viper is trying to get Jean to force Wolverine under Viper’s control.

We see someone, not in green, take out Tyger Tiger.  Now that we are in Madripoor, Tyger is probably happy as she lives there.

Wolverine 125 16 Kitty

Jubilee breaks Kitty out of her gel prision.

Black Widow makes up the fourth team member of the Rescue Logan Squad.  I do like her taking out Jean and Psylocke out first, that’s pretty smart.

Wolverine 125 17 Kitty

Wolverine tackles Rogue and she kisses him, to try to slow him down.  Kitty, again, has to put Rogue down again.  Kitty tricks Psylocke to put a psychic knife into Rogue’s head.

Wolverine 125 18 Kitty

Black Widow, who this has to be the first time her and Kitty have been in comic together, right?  Widow is holding her own against both Yukio and Jessica Drew.

Wolverine chases Viper as Kitty and Jubilee chase Logan.  Jean hangs back and knocks everyone else out.

Viper didn’t mean to hurt Logan, she needed to bring him to her and this was her best plan.  She reminds him of his vow.  He’s still in a middle of a berserker rage so he isn’t listening.

Wolverine 125 19 Kitty

Jubilee wouldn’t mind if Logan killed Viper but it isn’t really something Kitty wants to see.  Kitty is going to find a way to slow Logan down.  Meanwhile, Viper sums up her goals.  On Seraph’s tomb, Logan vowed to do anything Viper asked, whenever she asked it.

Wolverine 125 20 Kitty

Jean has made her way downstairs and is not happy.  Kitty merges with Jean, which kicks Kitty like a government mule and snaps Jean out of her mind control.

Wolverine 125 21 Kitty

Jubilee gets between Logan and Viper.  She forces him to choose, to act like an animal or with honor like a man.  Logan is all about honor and owning up to his word so this snaps him out of his little fit.

Wolverine 125 22 Lockheed

Some time passes, the poison is out of everyone’s system as the issue ends with Logan revealing that Viper is his life.  Even Lockheed is in shock!

X-Men Evolution 8

X-Men Evolution 8

Writer Devin Grayson

Art and Colors UDON with Long Vo, Charles Park and Saka of Studio XD

Letterer Randy Gentile

Cover Dated August 2002

Issue opens during a Ladies’ Soccer game at Bayville High.  As we learn last issue, Jean is on the team.

X-Men Evolution 8 Kitty 1

X-Men Evolution 8 Kitty 2

Scott is super supportive of Jean.

Spyke is jealous of Kurt and Amanda’s relationship.  Amanda is in Kitty’s Chemistry class.

I like how the show, and now the comic, paired Kurt with Amanda – and without all that weird backstory.

The game comes to a halt as Jean gets a vision of an angel in trouble.

X-Men Evolution 8 Kitty 3

At the mansion, the team informs Xavier of the vision.

Xavier shows Jean the front page of a newspaper, with Angel as the headline.

Rogue references the episode, On Angel’s Wing, when Scott and her met Angel.  One would imagine that Scott and Rogue would have just told Jean that was probably who she saw, back at the soccer game. There is no real reason to involve Xavier.

Since they did, Xavier links himself to Jean and they see Angel in the sewers.

Once in the sewers, Storm tells Cyclops that he is going to lead the team with this mission.

With this story, that is clearly a Morlock story, we get a cool combination.  The team that originally met the Morlocks in Uncanny X-Men 169 and 170 – Kitty, Storm and Kurt plus the two members who met the Morlocks first in the FOX 90s episode, Captive Hearts – Scott and Jean.  Rogue is there as a bonus (in the comics, she joins the team in the next issue) and Spyke is there to bring things down.

The Morlocks do appear in the Evolution episode, X-Treme Measures, for the first time.

Storm is suffering from her claustrophobia and Spyke is harassing her about it.

Jean chooses this awkward time to ask if she and Scott are okay. It isn’t prompted by anything. I did wish that Evolution was bold enough to pull the trigger on the Scott / Rogue relationship. That I would like to have seen.

Instead of answering Jean, Cyclops shouts that he doubts they will find anything down here.  Kitty is all for going back home., Kurt too. Jean is puzzled. Rogue figures out what Cyclops was trying to accomplish.

There are some great panels of Rogue shooting Jean looks and staring at Scott when he isn’t looking.

The Morlocks take the team to their leader, Callisto.

Jean runs over to Angel, his mind is mush.  She starts trying to piece it back together.

Storm and Callisto have a brief exchange. I guess one either recreate their big fight or not do it at all.  The Morlocks run off with Storm – I had to read the page a couple times to figure that part out.  I didn’t get them capturing Storm.

Cyclops orders Nightcrawler and Shadowcat to head the Morlocks off.  Jean is to stay with Angel.  Cyclops and Rogue are going the direct route after the Morlocks.

Kurt and Kitty have a fun exchange.  She brought a flashlight, as she was prepared and he is amazed as he didn’t think to do so.

The X-Men and the Morlocks all circle back to where Jean, Angel and Callisto are.  Angel comes around and yells at Callisto.

The X-Men, again, offer the Morlocks a home at the Mansion. They decline, again.

Back at the Mansion, Scott gets some kudos for a job well done.

Angel asks Jean out, she looks at Scott and accepts.  Scott should have answered her question back in the sewer.

The issue ends with Kitty and Beast looking at his emails.  He keeps turning the grant down.  Finally, Xessen reveals they know McCoy is a mutant and that isn’t a deal breaker.

Issue nine is on my Wishlist, hopefully one day, I can own it and figure out what that is all about.

This ends our visit to the X-Men Evolution comic series.

Stevie Hunter

One of my favorite X-Men supporting cast members has to be Stevie Hunters.  A human dance instructor who use to be a professional dancer before a knee injury took her out of competition dance.

http://comicbookdb.com/character_chron.php?ID=178

Turns out I own 69 percent of her appearances!  She was involved in three storylines that didn’t have Kitty in them, as she was off in Excalibur.  Those three 90s crossovers are X-Tinction Agenda, X-Cutioner’s Song and the Muir Island Saga.

Not bad at all, really.

She was also involved in the first few issues of New Mutants Volume One and I own a few of those as Illyana doesn’t show up in every issue of that series at the beginning.

X-Men Evolution 7

Posted in: Review. Tagged: Evolution, Grayson - Devin, UDON. Leave a comment

X-Men Evolution 7

Writer Devin Grayson

Art and Colors UDON with Long Vo, Charles Park and Saka of Studio XD

Letterer Randy Gentile

Cover Dated July 2002

When I added the bulk of the series to my Wishlist, I had thought these issues were just adaptations of episodes from the series.  Which may still be true, but this issue is its own unique story.

On my Wishlist are issues – 1, 4, 5, 6 and 9.  I ordered 7 and 8.  I’m pretty sure issues two, three and four are retellings of those episodes that deal with the origins of Cyclops, Jean and Kitty.  Which made me think that the entire nine episode series was just retellings of episodes but issue seven is not that at all.

This takes place sometime after the start of season two when Hank McCoy has transformed into Beast and can no longer teach at Bayville High School due to racism.

Which I like the idea of the comic series telling stories that happen in-between the episodes as I’m sure there are a lot to tell.  At least, nine of them.  Or possibly five of them, if I’m right about the first four issues.

I’m glad to finally read a Devin Grayson comic.  She’s a popular writer over at DC, especially with Nightwing.  I sort of followed her from panel to panel one year at San Diego Comic Con (way back in 2002) but I was really into the Bat-titles back then, also supporting ladies in the comic field – which I’m still supportive of.

UDON, the art team, I know is a group of people but I don’t follow them at all.  I do associate them with comic coloring, which they do a great job in this issue with.  It feels just like an episode of the show, but static.  Which makes sense.

If you like classic X-Men baseball game stories, then this issue is for you.  We get two of them in the issue!  One proper outdoor one where powers are not allowed and another within the Danger Room where powers are allowed.

There is an awkward moment in the comic when the Senior Staff are talking about how one of the students should be a sort of Student Leader.  Which is odd as I’m pretty sure from the offset of the show, that Cyclops was without doubt, the student field leader but who knows what the comic was trying to established.

Onto the issue itself –

Xavier shows Beast around the mansion.  Beast will be the first official teacher at the school.

X-Men Evolution 7 Kitty 1

X-Men Evolution 7 Kitty 2

Wolverine is in the Danger Room, giving Kitty, Kurt and Spike a work out.

Xavier tells the students that Beast will be their Physical Education teacher.  He will also teach Chemistry, just like he did at Bayside.

Kitty hugs Wolverine, I do enjoy how the show and the comic kept their friendship.

X-Men Evolution 7 Kitty 3

Kittt is super excited to have Dr. McCoy as her Chemistry teacher.

Storm wants to know what the chain of command is now that a fourth adult is present.

Storm also wants a student leader.

First Baseball Game. X-Men v New Students.  Spike proves why he was a horrible creation, he wants to win at all cost.

There is a fun sight gag where Multiple Man goes after the ball but runs into Havok, creating three duplicates.

Spike’s exchange with Beast gets him kicked out of the game.  Cyclops shows up, in time to become the new team captain.  He has a better venue.

Second Baseball Game. Now that they are in the Danger Room, they can use their powers.

Kitty gets to bat, I’m pretty sure she wasn’t at the first game.  She makes it to first base.

Cyclops’ turn at bat.  In a great use of one of Cyclops’ weaknesses, Boom Boom gets a brilliant idea to turn the security light on.  Now the room is bathed in red light, which I’m always a fan of.  Also, Cyclops can barely see outlines of things.  Such a fun two page sequence.  Jean helps him by telling him when to swing.

Spike bunts the ball. Kitty makes it home.  The X-Men win the game.

Beast tells Cyclops that he is the new leader of the students.

Issue ends with Beast getting a mysterious email.  We will learn more about that next issue, which I have plans to review next.

Beast’s email address is : HMcCoy@xnet.edu

The other party’s email is : Xessen@sciencescene.net

They want to work with him and are willing to give him a grant.

X-Men Classic 107

X-Men Classic 107

Writer Chris Claremont

Penciler John Romita Jr.

Guest Inker Al Williamson

Letterer Tom Orzechowski

Colorist Glynis Wein

Cover Dated May 1995

Cover by Frank Gary and Dan Green

I like how Green got to work on the cover, as he would have been the regular inker for the issue proper.

Also, that is the Beyonder on the cover and not a blonde Nightcrawler.

Inside front cover ad is for True Lies, the game on Super Nintendo / Genesis / Game Boy / Game Gear.

Issue opens with Rogue remembering how she stole Carol Danver’s powers.  Turns out, even with the quotation marks, she isn’t telling someone her origin story – she is just thinking to herself.

Rogue flies back to Jessica Drew’s house, as that is where the X-Men are staying while in San Francisco.

Rogue sees Kitty Pryde, who is going by Shadowcat now.

X-Men Classic 107 Kitty Soulsword

Kitty reveals that she has Magik’s eldritch armor as well as soulsword.  Which I always adored how that’s how close a friendship Illyana and Kitty have.  The biggest part of Illyana’s soul, her sword, instantly goes to Kitty if Illyana were to die.

Unfortunately, Rogue doesn’t remember Magik, the New Mutants or that Colossus ever had a kid sister.

This is the second time Kitty has been the keeper of Illyana’s soulsword.  The first time, was in New Mutants 36, when the Beyonder first met the New Mutants.

Kitty stands up, taking off the rest of her komodo, revealing that the entire right side of her body is covered by Magik’s armor.  Kitty starts screaming about how now that the New Mutants are dead, the X-Men are next.

Rachel comes out, she is tired of waiting around for the Beyonder to decide to kill everyone and destroy the universe.  If she can absorb her teammates’ life force, Rachel can have enough power to fight the Beyonder.  Kitty agrees.  Rogue agrees and Rachel also gets Carol Danver’s life force as well.  Jessica Drew comes out, she’s a private investigator now that she retired from being Spider-Woman.  She also gives up her energy.

Rachel goes to the guys’ bedrooms and takes their lifeforce – Colossus, Wolverine and Magneto.  Storm, who is awake, tries to rationalize with Rachel but Rachel has already decided her course of action.   So she steals Storm’s energy.  Rachel next flies off into space.

Uatu the Watcher is watching all of this, he has a head of a baby!

Rachel flies by the Starjammers’ ship and borrows their energy.  Xavier and Lilandra are on the ship, so she gets theirs as well.  She’s no longer wasting time asking for permission.

Rachel locates the m’Kraan Crystal (from the Original Phoenix Saga), she’s going to use it to undue the universe.  Once inside the crystal, all of the personalities come out and try to convince Rachel, one last time, to not go through with it.

Rachel begins the process, expanding her mind to everyone in the universe.  She isn’t going to just destroy a few planets, everyone will die.

The X-Men News Bulletin is for March 1995.  We are now in the thick of the Age of Apocalypse.  Which this issue must have looked odd on the stands that month.  The titles were on issue three of their respected series – Astonishing / X-Man / Generation Next / Weapon X / X-Calibre / Amazing / Factor X / Gambit & The X-Ternals.  X-Universe was starting with its first of two issues.  I adore Generation Next, and would highly recommend it to anyone.  My favorite of the Age of Apocalypse stories.

In San Francisco, Rachel cries.  She couldn’t go through with it.  The rest of the team gathers.  Wolverine wants to fight but on his own terms.  Magneto expresses a conversation he had with Xavier.  Would he kill Hitler as a baby?  Of course.  Would he kill Hitler’s grandparents before they could have a baby?  Even more so!

The Beyonder shows up and JRJR makes him look pretty cool, white suit and perm not withstanding.  Now that the X-Men can speak with him, they try to make a defense for why he is wrong.

JRJR has Kitty wearing this Hawaii shirt that looks like a box on her, it isn’t very good.  Good thing that the next panel has her back in the armor, which now covers her.  Since it is Kitty, she is able to use her words to get through to Beyonder.

Rachel gets Beyonder with the Phoenix Force and he’s able to see the beauty of life and death and rebirth.

X-Men Classic 107 Kitty Faith

Issue ends with some religious talk.  Kurt isn’t there so Kitty has to be the one to explain Catholicism.

Next issue poses the question, What Happened to Nightcrawler?  He’s having to deal with Arcade, it is awesome.

This ends my X-Men Classics run from my Father’s Day present from my wife that I got from http://www.MileHighComics.com

X-Men Classic 64

Posted by John Klein III on November 18, 2016

X-Men Classic 64

Script Chris Claremont

Pencils Brent Anderson

Inks Bob Wiacek

Letters Tom Orzechowski

Colors Glynis Wein

Cover Dated October 1991

Cover by Mike Mignola

Originally presented in Uncanny X-Men 160

So crazy, from Dracula to Limbo!  Fans back in the day, must have been going out of their minds!

This issue gives us . . . Teenaged Illyana Rasputin, mere issues away from becoming Magik!

Mignola gets to draw Kitty but opts to just draw her skeleton!

This issue also gives us Brent Anderson art outside of God Loves, Man Kills.

Inside front cover ad is for Bill & Ted’s Excellent Video Game Adventure, now on Game Boy.

X-Men Classic 64 Page 1

Issue opens with the X-Men, now on Magneto’s island base from Uncanny X-Men 160.  They are being watched by a mysterious person.

X-Men Classic 64 Page 2

The X-Men are having their first training exercise in quite some time.

A six year old Illyana gets tricked to follow a voice.

X-Men Classic 64 Page 3

Kitty notices Illyana wandering off.  She shouts for her to slow down.  Kitty also shouts at the X-Men that she is heading after Illyana.

Kitty follows Illyana into a temple and onto a stepping disc.

The X-Men finish their exercise.  Wolverine cutd a can of beer open.  Storm still feels tired from her ordeal with Dracula.  Kurt recommends she take a shower.  Experience a shower?  To bathe herself via a shower.

Storm really likes the idea and proceeds to shower herself in front of the team.  How use to her naked body must have the boys gotten?

After the show(er), Colossus wonders where his sister and Kitty are. Wolverine remembers Kitty saying something but that was a while ago.

Wolverine follows their trail and the X-Men enter the temple and each one gets their own stepping disc.

Elsewhere.  Kitty wakes up.  She references Larry Niven’s “Stepping Disks.”

http://larryniven.wikia.com/wiki/Stepping_disk

Kitty gives a shout for Illyana.  Kitty is surprised to see Nightcrawler right behind her.

X-Men Classic 64 Kitty Bad Touch

Kitty goes to hug Kurt.  Apparently he touches her in a very inappropriate place.  As a kid, I thought he touched her boobs but maybe now he touched her vagina.  As from his arm placement, it looks like it is extended.  But then when she walks backwards, we see that his hand is being phased away so he clearly must have touched her boobs.  Which makes this evil Nightcrawler, the first guy who got to do that.

Kitty runs away from him and trips over a rock.  When she lifts her head, she sees Belasco, the Lord of Limbo.  How she didn’t see him before tripping is beyond me.

Storm and Colossus are looking around.  Storm gets tangled by some tentacles.  Colossus moves forward to help her and gets teleported away.

With all of these discs, was Illyana’s initial mutant power going to be teleportation via stepping discs?  Seems odd that that is also the power of the temple.

Storm has an armlet on, and it cloaks her in Colossus’ metal skin, Wolverine’s claws and Nightcrawler’s feet.

Meanwhile, Belasco is taunting Kitty.  Evil Kurt is getting too close to Illyana.  Belasco doesn’t like that and teleports him away.

Belasco summons S’ym, who is a tall purple demon.  Who might look like Dave Sim.  In front of the two of them, is Wolverine’s skeleton.  S’ym cleans his teeth with one of Wolverine’s claws.

Belasco references how he was banished to Limbo in the issues of Ka-Zar, 11 & 12.

Belasco moves Kitty’s skeleton out of her body.  She is inside of a crystal (from the cover) so that keeps her alive.  The panel of her skeleton waving at her body, is pretty creepy.

Belasco gives Illyana her medallion with the bloodstones.  It currently has zero of the five slots full.  If she gets it full, she will be able to ascent to a glorious destiny.

Our Kurt is watching from the rafters.

Elsewhere.  Storm wakes up in a strange room.  She decides to take a swim in the pool, which wouldn’t be my first reaction.  She dons an outfit out of the third story from Heavy Metal (but pretty PC).  A cloaked figure sees Storm fly off.

The two Nightcrawlers fight.  I like how it ends with a double Bamf, and how we don’t now who won it.

A Nightcrawler goes to Belasco and reveals he killed the other Nightcrawler.

Wolverine comes across a dead Colossus with his chest caved in.  Next, S’ym throws Wolverine across the room, tearing his shirt off.  I like how fiercely Wolverine tries to fight but S’ym just throws him to the ground.

Colossus shows up and S’ym throws the claw from earlier into Colossus’ arm.  S’ym pulls the claw out of his green trunks.  That must have been uncomfortable.  S’ym starts wailing on Colossus until Wolverine shows up.  The only way they ‘win’ is because S’ym goes through the stepping disc.

They step on another one and show up right where Kitty, Kurt and Belasco is.  Her skeleton waves at them, and it is still creepy!

Belasco is ready to attack with Kurt reveals he is our Kurt and punches Belasco to his face.  Storm shows up as Belasco runs away.  She is ready to go after him but the cloaked figure appears.  She is the Storm that did go after Belasco.  In Limbo, the rules of time and space don’t apply.  They can be dead or alive at the same time, or good and evil at the same time.

Old Storm casts a spell and Kitty and her skeleton are reunited and it feels so good.

Belasco’s entire scheme is to use a stepping disc that is centered on Illyana (which may explain why that is her mutant power) but Older Storm blocks him.  He comes back and she keeps fighting him.  She tells the X-Men to take Illyana and leave.

X-Men Classic 64 Magik 7 Year Gap

They step on a disc and are about to leave when Belasco grabs Illyana’s arm.  Kitty grabs her and pulls as hard as she can.  Then she loses her grip on Illyana.  With the turn of the page, the entire Magik miniseries takes place.  One of these days, we will review them here.

X-Men Classic 64 Magik aged right

Kitty regrabs Illyana and with the entire team helping her, they pull Illyana out.  she’s now 13 years old – so now her and Kitty are the same age.

In a great moment, Colossus wishes he never met Charles Xavier as Illyana has lost her entire childhood.  She spent seven years in Limbo – with no idea what happened to her there.  It clearly couldn’t be good.  She eventually falls to sleep and Colossus sleeps in a chair next to her best.

Illyana’s medallion opens up and we see that there are three bloodstones.

I like how, for once, the original cover from Uncanny X-Men 160 is shown at the back.  Not sure why that isn’t always the rule.

Toy Biz X-Men 1991 Action Figures Ad

Back cover ad is for the Toy Biz X-Men Action Figures.  I’m sure I had the Storm one.

Next, we go to Issue 107!
