X-Men 100 Yu Original Cover

By Chris Claremont & Leinil Francis Yu

Inks Mark Morales

Letters Richard Starkings & Comicraft

Colors Liquid!

Cover Dated May 2000

Cover by Leinil Francis Yu, the proper cover for the issue

With this copy of the issue, I now own five covers of it.  This one, Yu’s variant, Dave Cockrum’s variant, Paul Smith’s variant and Art Adam’s cover.  I still want to own the Dynamic Forces variant.  I’ll post those covers as time goes by, I’m sure.

This was branded as, Revolution, which was part of the shake up with the X-Titles after the Twelve and Ages of Apocalypse, so this was an attempt to bring new life into the titles.

There is a joke there about Clarmeont being brought back to breathe new life into the titles, but it is beyond me.  Claremont is back on X-Men (and Uncanny) after ten years.

Issue opens with Nightcrawler fully embracing his Catholicism, as he is now a priest.  While reciting a prayer, he gets shot in the back of the head.  He bamfs out of there, wounded.

We get a double page spread, that first introduces the new villains, The Neo.  As they openly talk about their goals, Kurt is in the shadows and overhearing everything.  Kurt isn’t a priest, yet, he is a student in training.

I was going to look this up but Claremont did the work for me.  Kurt is studying at St. Michael, which is located in Vinegar Hill, the neighborhood hard by the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The Neo member, Jaeger, is a tracker and once he tastes Nightcrawler’s blood, he can track him anywhere.  The Neo were like Mike Carey’s The Children, but they came first.  They grew up in a space that had thousands of years of advancements in a very short time.

X-Men 100 Kitty 1

Kitty Pryde is the first active X-Man that we see, as Kurt is retired.  The current X-Men are in space, as the very last storyline before Revolution was the High Evolutionary story where he took away all mutant powers.  It has been six months since that storyline, which was the rule for the rebranding, that six months was skipped (and very few stories of the missing time, have been told)

Here are two links to help explain Revolution and the six month gap.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolution_%28comics%29

 http://www.uncannyxmen.net/continuity/six-month-gap

Editor Mark Powers provides the editor note, that this story took place in X-Men 99 and Uncanny X-Men 379 & 380.  In those issues, the X-Men destroyed the smaller satellites that took away the powers but the main one is still out there in space.  Chalk this issue up there with times with Kitty didn’t have a good time, in space.

The X-Men and their old friend, Peter Corbeau, are trying to make the base into a habitable space station.

Psylocke wants to know who put Kitty in charge, being the genius of the group, it just makes sense.  The X-Men are hurrying as the permanent crew are on their way to live on the station.

Psylocke pushes a beam too hard and it is up to Rogue and Colossus to stop it before it hits the station.  Thunderbird is also part of this team.

X-Men 100 Kitty 2

Rogue is trying to get the beam in place but Kitty phases through it, quicker.  Rogue notices the ‘knife’ Kitty is using.  Wolverine had bone claws for a while (years, really) and Kitty scavenged several of them when they broke off in fights.  Which I really like that concept being added to Kitty, she could use a weapon.  Makes her a little closer to her Generation Next counterpart.  Wolverine hasn’t joined the team at this point, that will come in issue 102.  103 is one of my favorites, as it has Rogue v Wolverine, for the leadership of the X-Men.  It isn’t anywhere nearly as good as Uncanny X-Men 201’s duo with Cyclops and Storm, but still pretty fantastic.

X-Men 100 Kitty 3

Apparently, they are above Genosha, during the six months, Kitty went there and didn’t have a good time but a life changing moment.  From the UncannyXMen.net website, there was meant to be a miniseries to cover her time there but it most likely dealt with her father, who lives there.

The Genoshian government isn’t happy about the space station.

X-Men 100 Kitty 4

We finally get to see Yu’s new costume designs for the team, plus the entire team, for the first time.  I do like Shadowcat and Rogue’s new designs.

Psylocke gets to repeat the old adage, that they live in a world that hates and fears them.

Back on Earth.  Nightcrawler teleports to old ally, Doctor Celica Reyes’ medical clinic.

In space, the crew are all celebrating all of their hard work, finally paying off.  The astronauts can live in on the space station.

Bullpen Bulletins.  Titles out on March 22nd – Amazing Spider-Man Annual 2000 / Deadpool 40 / Gambit 16 / Thunderbolts 38 / Warlock 8 and Webspinners : Tales of Spider-Man 17.  Deadpool is being written by Christopher Priest, such a fun run.

Betsy is dancing with Thunderbird, Neal Shaara.  Colossus is watching them, thinking about dumb thoughts.  Rogue tries to get him out of his own head.

The worst part of this celebrated anniversary issue, right in the middle, is Fast Lane, Part Four of Four, the anti-drug storyline starring Spider-Man.  It is eight pages and a real bear to keep flipping pass it.

Colossus catches up with Rogue and touches her bare face with his metal hand.  She doesn’t absorb his power and he kisses her, right on her lips.  Don’t worry, true believer, this romance dies as quickly as it showed up.

Brooklyn.  Celicia Reyes is patching up Nightcrawler.  A priest in training is called, a postulant.  Somehow, while she is tending to him, she is shot in the back with a dart.  She has a force field, I suppose it isn’t on all the time but still, one would think it would be casually on with what is going on around her.

X-Men 100 Kitty 5

The Space Station.  Colossus is gotten Kitty, as she isn’t in the mood to party.  Once in her room, she criticizes Colossus for wanting her to be the 14 and a year old that he originally met.  Kitty is owning her womanhood.

X-Men 100 Kitty 6

She phases through the floors of the station, until she meets her current love interest – Seth.  They have gone on a few days.  The first, they argued quantum physics.  The second, spent it at Cocoa Beach.

Unfortunately, her state of lame guys continues.  As soon as they kiss, her nervous system is torn to sheds.  During the confrontation, Kitty smartly phases one of her earrings into her cheek – she is planning ahead already.

Seth mutters that his actions are going to save her, and only her.

Brooklyn.  Jaeger tries to overpower Reyes but she starts using her force field aggressively.  She repeats something she did back in her first stint as an X-Man – as a doctor, she swore to do no harm but as an X-Man, she has to hurt fools so much.  Jaeger starts beating on her force field, trying to break her concentration.  Kurt jumps into the fight and is handed his arse for his troubles.  Reyes saves Kurt by turning her force field into spikes and ramming them into Jaeger, possibly killing him.  She goes into shock, as that is the exact opposite of her training.

X-Men 100 Kitty 7

The station.  Oh Claremont and his insistence on putting his strong female characters into bondage situations.  She slowly starts breaking her binds.  Meanwhile, the party goes forward, and Colossus is painting Rogue – where can that go?

X-Men 100 Kitty 8

Seth, in a Mantis like space suit, reports in to the NEO’s leader, Domina.  Domina isn’t happy with Seth’s decision to not kill Kitty.  Seth reveals that Kitty is NEO (she isn’t), he loves her and wants her to survive this.  Domino reveals that Jaeger has been killed.

The only other time Kitty being a NEO is referenced is in X-Men Declassified.

Kitty kicks Seth to his dumb face!  Chris Sims style!

Kitty catches up to the others, Seth has placed bombs all over the station.

The X-Men start using their powers in full view of the crew members.  Kitty tells them to get to the shuttles.

Seth starts attacking Kitty but Rogue comes from behind, for the assist.  Rogue absorbs some of Seth’s powers and starts wailing on him.

Seth taunts Kitty as he free falls out of the station, back to Earth.  That Mantis suit must be something else!

The X-Men turn their attention to the remaining shuttle.  Kitty has to stay behind, as it is her job to phase the shuttle away from the base, then Thunderbird is going to ignite the boosters.

X-Men 100 Kitty 9

Kitty, of course, is successful and the shuttle is free to go back to Earth.  Later, I’m sure, the crew will joke about how that was a waste of a few hours.

Kitty goes searching for a second suit, like Seth’s, which is pretty bold an assumption.

X-Men 100 Kitty 10

She is right, as he did want her to come with him.  She looks much better in the suit than Seth did.  The suit has an autopilot, so Kitty will be at its mercy.  We still, to this day, have no idea where she went.  She radios to the shuttle, to let them have this information.

Brooklyn.  The issue ends with Domina swearing vengeance!   We learn that the NEO have titles, as Dax (a young boy) is now the new Jaeger.

Back cover ad is for Calvin Klein jeans, featuring Moby – which seems so weird.

All of this work to get Kitty Pryde on his team and Claremont takes her off the title and put her in character limbo for nine months.  She still appears in the character box for the next following issues (but with long hair, for some reason), 101, 102 and, 103.  Then the first X-Men film comes out so the character box is replaced with that in the square.  Oh Marvel really missed having the titles tie better with the films.  Kitty is back on the character box, still with long hair, for issue 107.  108 is the Dream’s End crossover and 109 has a reference to Kitty, it is also the Christmas issue.  110, course, is Kitty back in the title and celebrating the death of Colossus – who died in Uncanny X-Men 390.   Lobdell wrote 110, so Claremont doesn’t even do anything for or with her until 109, when he writes that she is doing okay.  Then she shows up out of nowhere for 110.  From there, the Eve of Destruction crossover happens, then the Grant Morrison era kicks in and Kitty isn’t seen in the pages of X-Men until issue 157.

Kitty has the long hair in the character box as they didn’t change the character box heads to reflect the new looks.

Guardians of the Galaxy X-Men Black Vortex Omega

Writer Sam Humphries

Pencils Ed McGuinness and Javier Garron

Inkers Mark Farmer, Javier Garron and Ed McGuinness

Colors Marte Garcia

Letterer Travis Lanham (without VC?)

Black Vortex, Chapter Thirteen

The Final Chapter!

Black Vortex Omega Kitty mention

Shadowcat narrates the entire issue, for us.  Kitty has been given a cosmic upgrade but has also disappeared in front of everybody.

Black Vortex Omega Shadowcat Narration A

The combined heroes are fighting off the Slaughter Lords.

Black Vortex Omega Cosmic Kitty 1

We get our first look at, Cosmic Shadowcat!  I like Humphries’ reveal of what Kitty likes to do on a Saturday night.  She likes to drink tea, under a blanket and watching Katherine Hepburn films.  My favorites are – Philadelphia Story, Adam’s Rib, African Queen, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and On Golden Pond.

I’m glad I looked her up, as my mind read it as “Audrey Hepburn” instead of Katherine.

Cosmic Shadowcat has a different outlook on space now, all the things she hated before, seem to have disappeared.

Black Vortex Omega Multi-Kittys

She sees the remains of Hala, Breakworld and Earth.  She reaches out and touches alternate realities of Kitty Prydes.  The two famous ones are Kate Pryde and Shadowcat of Lighting Force.  With Humphries writing “Star Lord and Kitty Pryde” starring the Shadowcat of Age of Apocalypse, I’m surprised that Shadowcat wasn’t on the list.  Especially as the other three are just Kitty Prydes over the eyar, from her Original X-Men Uniform, to her Blue Excalibur Costume to Current one, plus the even more current Cosmic Kitty Pryde.  I would have included Age of Apocalypse and Ultimate Kitty Pryde, but I can see them not wanting to include Ultimate Shadowcat this close to Secret Wars 2015.  If the X-Men Forever Shadowcat had a distinctive look (or was more popular) she could have been included.  Cat from Exiles is dead, so that one wouldn’t work.

The Mutant X slash Black Queen Kitty could have been fun.  This may be the biggest problem, if you choose two, do you not go with a fuller page with additional ones?  With Spider-Verse behind us, I imagine Marvel also wants to avoid that too.  Shadowkitty would also have been a cute choice.

Black Vortex Omega Cosmic Kitty 2

Cosmic Shadowcat becomes one with the entire universe.  Thus, she is far better than Mastermind, when he had this same experience.  I suppose that his was forced on him, and he didn’t have the cosmic power to support it.

Ronan the Accuser, still cosmically powered, has entered the fray.  He is seeking revenge for Hala, which he should just be mad at everybody present.  Cosmic Gamora, Beast and Warren for destroying so much of Hala and Slaughter Lords as they work for J’Son and he gave the order to rip Hala in half.  Which Ronan is clearly mad at them all.

Before more fighting can happen, the astonishing happens.

Black Vortex Omega Cosmic Kitty Cosmic Phasing

Spartax and its amber coated top layer, are phased apart.  Add Spartax to the list of planets that Kitty Pryde has single handedly saved by herself – the other planet, Earth.  Look at that image on the bottom, how awesome that Kitty just straight up phases on a planetary scale.

Black Vortex Omega Cosmic Kitty 3

We will just have to overlook or plain forget that Kitty just killed an entire species of Brood babies.

Black Vortex Omega Cosmic Kitty face

So great how the people of Spartax will know, forever, the name “Kitty Pryde.”

Look at the . . . how proud, Quill is over his lady love.

Black Vortex Omega Cosmic Kitty 4

Kitty just holds Spartax like it is a basketball.

The Slaughter Lords decide now that is the time to be getting out of there.

Black Vortex Omega Cosmic Kitty 5

Cosmic Kitty is now human size.

I like the possible friendship between Magik and Nova, she could use a friend that isn’t related to the X-Men.

Gara prepares to destroy the Black Vortex, she gives those who were enhanced to undo the procedure.  There is a risk though, the repercussions are unpredictable.

Gamora and Warren are going to keep their power upgrades.  Scott, Bobby, Groot and Beast – all agree to risk the changes and get depowered.  Beast reverts back to his latest blue ape form.  Bobby, instead of having his default ice form being mostly snow, is now ice.  Groot seems to be bulkier.

Black Vortex Omega Cosmic Kitty 6

Scott doesn’t feel any differences.  Jean, being the nosy bitch that she is, reads his mind and sees that it his heart that is different.

Kitty offers Gara to join them.  Kitty feels pretty comfortable offering positions in the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Black Vortex Omega Lockheed 1

Look!  Someone remembered to include Lockheed!  This is already a great issue!  He looks pretty soft there.  This appears to be a Garron drawn page, I would reckon.

Corsair remains the only member of the Starjammers to be seen.  In that Black Vortex trailer, they make a point of naming the Starjammers as being involved but they were barely on four pages.  They may be tied with Lockheed for involvement.

Nova and Magik are still chatting about.  Is Drax and Storm dancing?  Rocket explains that the X-Men are taking the Hot Rod back to Earth, as he doesn’t want to get anywhere near that planet.  Corsair is talking to the younger version of his former daughter-in-law.  What could Lockheed, Scott and Carol be talking about?  Lockheed seems to be very interested in the conversation.

Two people are clearly missing.

Black Vortex Omega StarKat 1

Pryde and Quill are floating about space, he is attempting to serenade her.  The song he is singing, is “Once Upon a Dream” – which is famously from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

Thanks to YouTuber CurlySVT for hosting the video!

Kitty, even after all of her comments and thoughts about hating space and how it isn’t her jam, she has decided to maintain her cosmic powers.  Which seems crazy to me!  Then again, I wouldn’t have wanted to risk what would have happened if she gave it up.  Especially as she was one with the universe.  Kitty does have doubts about not giving it up.

Quill doesn’t care about any of that, as he plain loves her.

Black Vortex Omega Proposal 0

Quill starts explaining how much he loves Pryde.  Pryde loves the dumb lug.

Bobby, who is the worst, shouts that everyone should come to the window and watch.

Black Vortex Omega Proposal

Quill straight up proposes to Pryde!

Black Vortex Omega Shadowcat Narration 1

The Collector . . . collects J’Son.  Ronan arrives on some Kree planet, I figure, and swears his vengeance!

Black Vortex Omega Shadowcat Narration 2

Thane and the Ebony Maw, plan on tracking down the Black Vortex.  Which Secret Wars 2015 coming around the way, I doubt we will actually get any of these unresolved threads will be tied up.

Black Vortex Omega Lockheed 2

Pryde and Quill are crying.  Look at that weird middle panel with all of the headshots, those look so odd.

Black Vortex Omega Lockheed A

They see the couple hugging and take that as a ‘yes’!

Look how big Lockheed is there!

Storm asks Rocket if he will be her date for the wedding.  Are we going to get a wedding issue prior to Secret Wars 2015?

Black Vortex Omega StarKat 2

StarKat make out as the issue ends.

Black Vortex Omega Shadowcat Narration 3

This was such a fantastic crossover!  Such a nice ending and it seems like it will have major ramifications for the two series.

New Avengers Finale

Writer Brian Michael Bendis

Pencilers Bryan Hitch with Stuart Immonen

Inkers Butch Guice with Andrew Currie & Karl Story

Colorists Paul Mounts with Justin Ponsor & Rain Beredo

Letterer Chris Eliopoulos

Flashback Artists – David Finch, Danny Miki, Frank d’Armata, Steve McNiven, Dexter Vines, Morry Hollowell, Olivier Coipel, John Dell, Mike Deodato Jr., Joe Pimental, Dave Stewart, Leinil Yu, Mark Morales, Laura Martin, Bryan Hitch, Rain Beredo, Billy Tan, Matt Banning, Justin Ponsor

Cover Dated June 2010

Jessica got the cover treatment!  Looking at the credits, I’m not sure which other pages Immonen and his team did, besides the very last page.  I suspect he may did any pages with Jessica (as she isn’t part of the action) but those pages still look like Hitch.  Maybe it is the inkers throwing me off but I’m not sure.  The final two page splash are the only pages that look like Immonen.

This issue starts with a warning, to read Siege 4, prior to this issue.  This issue ends the, Dark Reign of Norman Osborn.  Well, Siege 4 did that, but this has the aftermath.

Issue opens with everyone’s favorite villainous father daughter pair, Count Nefaria (of Uncanny X-Cast fame) and his lovely daughter, Whitney, Madame Masque.  She is seeking help from her father as her boyfriend, The Hood, and her are on the run.  This is one of the few appearances of the Count’s that I’ve actually read and it is hard not to read his voice in the classic vampire fashion.

New Avengers Finale Jessica Jones 1

I do like how, under the Iron Patriot helmet, Norman would still paint his face green to represent his Goblin side.  So kooky!  Siege took place on the Asgard portion of Oklahoma.

Poor Jessica Jones is watching the news, looking for any sign of her husband, Luke Cage.  Danielle is happy, sucking down some milk or formula.

New Avengers Finale Jessica Jones 2

Jessica gets a call from the US Army, Luke borrowed a phone.  Which is nice as my wife would not answer her phone from a number she didn’t recognize.  Luke is telling her that he is okay but there is a mess.

Cut to an awesome and what Hitch does best, double page splash.  The pages are full of debris and so much detailed destruction.

New Avengers Finale Jessica Jones 3

Jessica wants him to come home but he can’t as the New Avengers are still fugitives of the law – due to the Superhero Registration Act.  Their phones get disconnected.

The team make sure that they are all okay.  Ronin wants to take a moment to appreciate their win.  After that moment, the team wants to leave as, if they help the police, they will get arrested.  Most likely, after the damage has been cleaned up.  Captain America, the real one, is summoned by the President.  Most likely, Obama, but Bendis doesn’t like dating his comics, like that.

Spider-Woman looks over and sees the fallen villains that Norman had en massed, including the Wrecking Crew.  Ronin wants to know where the Hood is, but none of the thugs know.  So this whole issue is about finding the Hood.  Someone gives up the name of Hood’s cousin, John King.  They find him, he calls Hood and arranges a meeting.

The team gets to where Hood, Madame Masque and Count Nefaria are.  Cage is told about who Nefaria is.  Carol explains his powerset.  He has the combined power of Living Laser, Atlas of the Thunderbolts and either Whirlwind or Whizzer (it is Whirlwind)’s speed.  So energy projection from Living Laser and strength from Atlas.  Also, he is essentially immortal.  Cage makes a phone call, they need some additional power.

Inside, Nefaria is willing to help Hood but only for all of his money.  With the power upgrade that Nefaria promises, the Hood can make up all of that money, rather quickly.  He is not impressed with the Hood,at all.

The Avengers crash through the window and the fight begins.  Carol is the first to confront Nefaria, she’s going by Ms. Marvel at this point.  She starts taking a beating from him, but only so she can absorb his energy – a powerset people forget that she has.  I didn’t even know she had it!  Is that a left over from her Binary days?

So she hits him with his own power which weakens him to merely “not so powerful” but still.  He takes down Carol and shouts that he is immortal.  Just then, Wolverine shows up to start ripping into Nefaria.  This is who Cage called.  Carol starts back into Nefaria, taking more of his energy.  He is immortal but a tad less so, so Wolverine’s attacks are mostly weakening him.

Wolverine was on the West Coast, as the X-Men are on Utopia.

Asgard, Oklahoma.  The Avengers drop – Hood, Madame Masque, Count Nefaria and John King.

Cage asks Hill what the Avengers are, and she tells him that they need to watch the news.

New York.  The Next Day.  Superhuman Registration Act Thrown Out.  Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, replaces Norman Osborn as America’s Top Cop.  So this issue sets up the Heroic Age, a more back to basics approach Marvel branded the titles with.

New Avengers Finale Jessica Jones 4

Rogers, out of his star spangled suit, informs the team that the President has appointed him, The Director of SHIELD.  Which lasts a decent amount of time.  Rogers reveals that Count Nefaria was one of the responsible parties from the original first issue of New Avengers, volume one.

New Avengers Finale Jessica Jones 6

Mockingbird brings up the question of what they do now.  This, somehow, sets up Cage to provide a giant monologue, which is mostly an excuse to reprint art from previous storylines.

We get a glimpse from the original Ronin storyline, that had Echo under the hood.

New Avengers Finale Kitty Pryde

Yes, I own this just because of this page, that I already own once, during the original Sentry storyline.

Cage has been honored to be counted among these New Avengers.

New Avengers V1 8 Kitty Pryde

Which is taken directly from New Avengers 8 with art by David Finch.

I guess the House of M counts as it was a Bendis penned crossover and this title would have had tie-in issues.

We get the storyline reminder, and the mess that it was, with the essence of the lost mutant powers, reappearing on Earth and killing Alpha Flight and eventually ending up with Weapon Omega.  It also was Bendis doing what Marvel needed so that they can use Magneto again after Morrison’s attempted to shelf the character with the Xorn business.

Double splash page (they all have been, thus far) of Secret Invasion, another Bendis written crossover.

Double splash from when Doctor Strange was looking for the new Sorcerer Supreme.

New Avengers v Dark Avengers!

The final one of these is when Rogers, as Captain America, got to throw his mighty shield into Iron Patriot, Norman Osborn’s face.

New Avengers Finale Jessica Jones 5

I really like this final page, clearly done by Immonen – with all of the characters, out of costume.  My only problem, with it?  Shouldn’t Bucky’s arm be metallic?  It is definitely flesh colored.

The next issue is Bendis’ first Avengers 1, with a very complicated time adventure.

Gara also arrives, fully intended to destroy the cosmic mirror.  Kitty narrates slash reminds us that Gara is twelve billion years old, which is unfathomable, that’s a lot of days and hours.  Magik intercepts Gara.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Shadowcat 5

That . . . fight, seems to generous of a word.  The Black Vortex falls and Jean inches towards it.  She is prepared to make a sacrifice.  Kitty narrates that X-Men don’t think twice of choosing between saving an entire planet or one’s self.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Shadowcat Narration 1

Kitty hasn’t told anyone what Plan B consists of.  Jean’s upgrade involves her getting a Magik-like head garb.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Shadowcat Narration 2

Quill pulls Jean away from the mirror, it isn’t going to be her this time.  Jeans can’t handle cosmic upgrades.  He looks into the Black Vortex and sees a Booster Gold level version of himself.  His father is super proud of him.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Shadowcat 6

Lord of Stars is surrounded by women, but not the one that he wants.  He punches the Black Vortex away.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Kitty Magik b

Quill apologizes for not making the ultimate commitment, Kitty smiles, as he never was suppose to.

Gara is about to tell them all a little story.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Kitty Magik c

Gara retells what happened to the Viscardi, the Black Vortex has destroyed entire civilizations, in minutes.  Just like what happened to Hala.  Those who have submitted, have been changed.

Gara doesn’t care about Spartax, she wants the mirror gone.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Kitty Magik d

Magik points out that foolish Gara is being.  Gara questions if Magik has what it takes to not be tempted by ultimate power.

Kitty restates her mantra.  She hates space, she doesn’t want the power cosmic.  She should be the person who gets the upgrade, last.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Shadowcat 7

Kitty stands before the Black Vortex, and Quill tries to convince her otherwise.  It isn’t going to work.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Shadowcat Narration 3

Kitty really hates space.

Legendary Star Lord 11 Cosmic Shadowcat

Issue ends with a hint of what Cosmic Shadowcat looks like.  Much better than what was hinted at in the first few issues.

Next, the final chapter of Black Vortex!  All roads lead to Omega!

8 Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) Hulk (Bruce Banner)
7 Flash (Barry Allen) Thor (Odinson)
6 Flash (Wally West) (2) Magneto
5 Joker Doctor Doom (10)
4 Wonder Woman Daredevil
3 Dick Grayson Wolverine
2 Superman Captain America (Steve Rogers)
1 Batman (Bruce Wayne) (4) Spider-Man (Peter Parker)

To break down the list, let’s start with –

DC

Three Green Lanterns made the list.  Kyle will always be my Green Lantern, I’m a Grant Morrison JLA guy, which is why Wally West is my favorite Flash, as well.  That’s my era of DC.  So thrilled with Wally edging out Barry, too.  I should have voted for Stephanie Brown, one of my favorite Bat-Supporting Characters.  Tim Drake, my favorite Robin, should have ranked higher, missing the Top Fifteen by two!  When 6 – 4 was revealed, and Wonder Woman was ranked fourth, I couldn’t think of who else would take the Third Top Slot.  I was taken by complete surprised with Dick Grayson, I guess I wasn’t really keeping track of who was named.  I knew Superman would be number two, to Batman’s number one – that just makes sense.

Marvel

oh man, Kitty Pryde should have been in the Top Ten, but Top Fifteen is respectable.  20 other like minded folks, makes me pretty happy.  Glad Magik made the list, at 42 makes me think – next time the list is made, she should be higher.  I can’t believe that Invisible Woman is the third highest ranked member of the Fantastic Four.  I would rank her at number one, with Thing a close second and Reed and Johnny both tied for fourth, with maybe a slight edge to Reed.  Surprised that Beast was ranked so high (33) with how X-Fans don’t care for him, these days but I suppose those Avengers votes helped.  When 10 through 7 were announced, I was pretty surprised to see the main Avengers names being listed.  Iron Man at 9, Hulk at 8 and Thor at 7 – caught me by surprised.  I knew they would be Top Ten but I thought they would be a lock for Top Five.  Once again, third place threw me off as I hadn’t notice Wolverine not being ranked yet.  I figured Spider-Man would be one with Captain America at number two.  Ever since One More Day, I haven’t been in the Spider-Camp but I did enjoy Superior Spider-Man’s time.  Makes sense that Wolverine would be the Top Mutant but sixteen out of fifty, is pretty good for mutants.  Would be seventeen but Squirrel Girl is no longer a mutant, unfortunately.

The characters I voted for and who didn’t make the list are –

Marvel –

2.  Lockheed
5.  Rachel Summers
6.  Doug Ramsey, Cypher
7.  Ben Reilly, Scarlet Spider
8.  Arcade

DC –

1.  Cameron Chase

So that isn’t so bad.  My Marvel list was X-Centric so that makes sense that it wouldn’t do well overall, with the entire Marvel Universe being voted upon.

Black Vortex, Chapter Eleven

This is my first comic written by Comics Should Be Good’s Top Female Comic Book Writer, chosen by us, the fans.  Which is pretty exciting.  Kitty barely got a mention in Cyclops 12, but her name was said by Captain Marvel, so we should be seeing Kitty in this issue.  At the very least, Carol should mention her again.

It took me a while to figure out what is happening on that cover.  At first, I thought maybe it was two cosmic fingers grabbing Carol.  it wan’t until I walked away from the cover and came back that I caught it in the corner of my eye.  The Captain Marvel behind Carol, is grabbing Carol, those two giant fingers are the Captain’s arms.  Am I the only one who had troubles figuring that out?

Like the Cyclops issue that preceded it, DeConnick doesn’t waste time with any plotpoints from issue 13, this issue stands completely outside of the series proper but perfectly inside of Black Vortex.

In Cyclops 12, Carol grabbed the Black Vortex from Cyclops and she is on her way to Spartax as Kitty has a plan.

A year ago, apparently, Carol made a promise to herself to find her limitations.  She compares herself to a mustang, but with the Black Vortex, she could be a Maserati.

Which I’m not a car guy – like, at all – but I have been under the impression that a Mustang was one of the higher quality vehicles with a few above it like a Rolls Royce and a Bentley

2015 Mustang

2015 Mustang

2015 Maserati

.  2015 Maserati

They look like very fancy silver cars to me.

https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101017121953AAOeR9a

That thread has a decent conversation regarding the two.  The main thing is that Mustangs are American and are nearly fifty thousand dollar cars and Maseratis are Italian and are a hundred thousand dollar cars.

So I get the metaphor that Carol is going for.

Before I get too far along, can you believe that this is the eight volume of “Captain Marvel,”  good grief!  I imagine this has to be one of the longer runs of the title.

Carol is flying as hard as she can, as Gara, the last Viscardi, is after her so that Gara can destroy the Black Vortex.

Captain Marvel V8 14 Kitty Pryde Mention

Carol is okay with destroying it but Kitty needs to save Spartax so billions of lives are at stake.  To make matters worst, the Slaughter Lords are after Carol as well.  It is so good to read a comic with her in it again, I miss her from the Busiek run of Avengers and the Claremont X-Men days prior to that.

Carol loses the mirror as she is blasted from behind.  Thane takes off after the cosmic mirror.  Captain Marvel keeps it away from Thane but she gets his power set backwards.  Prior to his cosmic upgrade, he had to touch you to hurt you, now he can just amber blast you from a distance.

J’Son gets ahead of Captain Marvel.  Editor Sufferin’ Sana Amanat reminds us that these two met up before in issue six – thanks!  J’Son and Captain Marvel trade some quips before J’Son’s space whale slash ship arrives.  Captain Marvel crashes inside the fortress and now J’Son has the advantage.

J’Son pulls out a ball that creates an image of five additional hims.  Which is weird that this works, as can’t Carol just zap all six of them and figure it out?

Captain Marvel gets in front of the Black Vortex and is tempted to submit and get a massive upgrade but refuses.  Thane finally catches up and lands.  The Ebony Maw convinces him to take out both of them and he tries.  Captain Marvel dodges and J’Son doesn’t so he is covered in amber.

Gara lands next to Thane and knocks him out.  Gara tries to talk to Carol but she has a mission to achieve.

Captain Marvel V8 14 Kitty Pryde Mention 2

So the two big bads that started this crossover are out of action.  Carol returns to flying to Spartax, for Kitty, and Gara is back to being on Carol’s heels.

Pretty decent issue!  Next issue is the pentlultimate issue of Black Vortex in the pages of Legendary Star Lord 11!

In Captain Marvel 15, Carol is back to Earth, apparently!  I guess she may be out of Guardians of the Galaxy too?  She could be in both titles, probably be easier that way, DeConnick can tell some Earth based stories and Bendis can tell his space stories with her, fans will just have to decided that one adventure takes place over one weekend and the other adventure on a different weekend – or something.

Pierce Brosnan is my James Bond

Posted by John Klein III on November 6, 2015
Posted in: Fun With YouTube. Tagged: James Bond, YouTube. Leave a comment

People can enjoy their Daniel Craigs and their Sean Sean Connerys but my Bond will forever be Pierce Brosnan.

f Pierce Brosnan as James Bond (007) in GoldenEye.

If EON Productions ever made a Actor Collection (which I’m surprised they haven’t yet), I would buy the Brosnan film collection so fast!  The current collections seems to be so that you get one actor protrayal in every set.  Which is odd.  I guess it is so that they don’t have a giant differences in the boxes as each actor has different number of films to their credit.

But I imagine that doesn’t really matter, I keep expecting a new collection of sets with each new Bond film so eventually they will have to do this.

When that day happens, I will finally be able to own these films :

GoldenEye (1995)

Thanks to YouTuber James Gunner Bond

Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

Thanks to YouTuber George Lewis

The World Is Not Enough (1999)

Thanks to YouTuber thecultbox

Die Another Day (2002)

Thanks to YouTuber merlineater

An awesome seven years of films!  I didn’t realize they were able to make them that fast, as that is a quick turn around!

On September 28th, I noticed Hastings was selling this –

Pierce Brosnan BluRay Collection

I want this so much!  $25 didn’t seem to bad, either.

New Avengers 51

New Avengers 51

Script Brian Michael Bendis

Art Billy Tan, Matt Banning and Justice Ponsor & Chris Bachalo, Tim Townsend and Antonio Fabela

Lettering RS & Comicraft’s Albert Deschesne

Cover Art Billy Tan, Matt Banning and Paul Mounts

Cover Dated May 2009

I only own this issue for the Magik appearance on the cover.  I will eventually review issues 53 and 54 of this series but Jessica Jones only appears in this issue.

This issue is broken down into two stories, the Doctor Strange portion and the New Avengers section.  So that is how the two art teams break down, which is pretty smart.  Tan gets the New Avengers and Bachalo gets Doctor Strange.

New Avengers 51 Recap Page

Here is a quick recap of what has been going on.  Secret Invasion happened, Norman Osborn killed the Skrull Queen and became Director of SHIELD, which he renamed to HAMMER – for reasons.  Due to the World War Hulk, Doctor Strange tapped into some dark magic and became overpowered and had to leave for a time.

The Hood’s Penthouse.  The Hood has summoned Dormammu, so that he can have even more power.

Avengers Tower.  Mockingbird watches as her boyfriend, Ronin – secretly Hawkeye (to the world at large) as he goes on television to review Norman Osborn for the villain that he is.  The news media is skeptical.

Dover, New Jersey.  Wiccan, of Young Avengers fame (and possible son of Scarlet Witch) uses his magic to prevent a car crash.  Doctor Strange interviews Wiccan – as he is waiting for the Eye of Agamotto to reveal who the new Sorcerer Supreme will be.

It is a real shame that Bendis didn’t make the cut to be the Sorcerer Supreme, though Bendis would sort of correct this in the Uncanny X-Men Annual 1 2014.

There is a house ad for Exiles 1, the third attempt at the series, this time with Jeff Parker and Salvador Espin, it was pretty good for the six issues it lasted.

Doctor Strange is approached by the suped up Hood.

Th second issue of War of Kings is coming out.

New Avengers 51 Jessica Jones 1

Avengers Hideout.  The Bronx, really it is Bucky Cap’s safe house.  These are my favorite pages of the issue, with one being very fun.

Ronin wants to conduct their meetings in the classic Avengers fashion.  There will be a leader and a deputy leader, even a handbook.  Cage is surprised to learn that he has been the acting leader.  No one wants the leadership role.

Secret Warriors 3 is coming out.  Blair Butler of G4 TV’s Fresh Ink Online states “Hickman is the next Warren Ellis, the next Alan Moore.”  Which seems pretty bold back in 2009.

New Avengers 51 Jessica Jones 2

Spider-Man offers that Bucky Cap has the military experience but he counters that he doesn’t have the Avengers experience.  Jessica offers up that her friend, Carol, has military training.  Carol turns it down.  Since no one else wants it, Ronin will lead.  Ronin makes Carol the deputy leader.

Ronin has an issue, and it is with Spider-Man.

Thor 601 by Straczynski and Djurdjevic start the concept of Asgard in Oklahoma.

New Avengers 51 Jessica Jones 3

Look at that first image above, notice how all of the Avengers are maskless?  Except for the one, not at the table.  That is an issue for Ronin.  Wolverine vouches for Spider-Man but since he couldn’t tell Skrulls from the genuine article, so he can be tricked.  Of the Skrull big reveals, only one of importance is that Mockingbird is back in the world of the living.

That panel of Danielle Cage (named after Luke’s best friend, Iron Fist – which I love!) eating sloppily with her hands?  So true to life!

Ronin wants no secrets, so he wants Spider-Man to unmask.  Spider-Man is cautious as he doesn’t want to risk his family’s safety.  This is Post-Civil War, where he had unmasked in front of the world – but it is also Post-One More Day, where he made a deal with the Devil (Mephisto) and rewrote time and his identity back into the hands of a few.

New Avengers 51 Jessica Jones 4

Peter Parker unmasks and introduces himself.  Jessica Jones recognizes him, immediately.  They went to high school together.  All of this was revealed in the awesome two part origin story of Jessica’s over in Alias 22 & 23.

Poor Jessica, she was even more invisible than Peter was!  Peter had, at least, bullies in Flash and the popular kids, razzing him on a daily basis.  Jessica was just in the background, so even Peter didn’t see her.

Jessica reveals she had a massive crush on Peter, which shocks Peter AND Luke Cage!

New Avengers 51 Jessica Jones 5

I love this page so much!  Jessica knows she has to give Peter some additional information.  She repeats her origin (briefly) about how she was doused by radiation and was in a coma forever.  Apparently students at Midtown High School called her, Coma Girl, as they were pretty clever.  She is not happy with the nickname.

Luke’s running commentary is a delight.  He can’t believe she had a crush on Peter, who is pretty much the opposite of, in every way.

Jessica, in full flirtation mode (look at that classic hair pull!) she claims it was a billion years ago but she sure does want to keep talking to Peter.  I like how the rest of the team is merely watching in silence.  I imagine this is more along the lines of two friends from high school, catching up after years apart.  Then she says she use to love Peter and Cage starts losing his mind.

Apparently they spoke to each other in ninth and tenth grade, but he barely noticed her.  Cage wants to know if it was a crush or love, which at sixteen, I’m not sure if there is a difference.

New Avengers 51 Jessica Jones 6

Peter wishes she was up front with her feelings, as he was just stuck at home with his test tubes and eating flapjacks.  Which I adore that, as a Spider-fan, that it is a term that I just know and recognize but Mockingbird and Ronin have no clue that Peter is talking about pancakes.

So I believe you are suppose to read the top row, then the right panel and then move to the middle row.  Those panels do seem out of place, as she just leaves and they were talking.  I guess she is thinking about how life would have been different.  Now that would have been a decent What If, right there!

Wolverine is very pleased that reunion happened, as it was fun to watch.

Peter reveals that his best friend’s father is Norman Osborn, they have a history.  He leaves out that his blonde girlfriend cheated on him with his best friend’s father and flew to Paris and birthed his twin babies and then Norman threw her off a bridge and Peter broke her neck with his web.  I suppose I would have left that part out too.

There is a hug crash and we get Luke saying, Sweet Christmas, which I totally say too!

Issue ends with Doctor Strange beaten and weakly asking for help.

I read every issue of Alias and the short lived sequel series, Pulse, and I became a huge Jessica Jones fan.  It was a sad day when I started selling those issues.  Such a great original series.

Cyclops 12

Letterer VC’s Joe Caramagna

Black Vortex, Chapter Ten

This is the first chapter that I almost didn’t buy!  No more close ones, ya’ll!

I haven’t bought an issue of this series since the first one but none of that matters, which I like how Layman isn’t trying to bring in other subplots of the year’s worth of series.  He has Bobby ask Scott what has been happening but Scott chooses to not get into that.

Last time we saw Cyclops, Iceman and Groot – they were being taken prisoner by the Slaughter Squad.  Scott has a fantasy sequence where his father, Corsair, rescues him but it is only a dream.

The trio are in a cell with power inhibitors.  Once they are alone, they start a plan that Bobby came up with.  Scott uses his limited optic blast, to recreate a finger print on a scanner and the door opens for them.  That is some advance skills that Scott has there!

Of course, they escape into the giant room with nothing but armed guards.  They turn around and run away.  They run into a room with the Black Vortex (naturally).  Iceman wants to submit to it, so that they can survive the onslaught that is behind him.  Scott isn’t so sure but he has another fantasy involving his father and Jean (his All New teammate) and agrees to submit as well.  Groot was okay with submitting, from the beginning.  Does anyone know if Geranium’s all are limited to saying only a limited amount of words, or is that a racist question?

Cyclops 12 Cosmic Cyclops Iceman Groot

Why the heck is that Bobby’s cosmic form?  To not appear human, at all?  What is the inspiration there?  Scott and Groot, both look spectacular!

They make short work of the fools.  They get outside and see Nova, Cosmic Warren (so only Hank and Jean don’t get power upgrades, Present Day Beast did though), Drax, Beast, Gamora and Captain Marvel – are all fighting the Slaughter Lords.

Cyclops 12 Kitty Mention

Captain Marvel sees the Black Vortex and tells the trio that Kitty needs the Black Vortex.  So, with that one line, we are still safe with collecting all ten chapters of this crossover!  Can we make it to thirteen?  Yes we can!  But not after another close call!

The story continues in Captain Marvel 14, part eleven of Black Vortex!
