I thought it would be fun to review Wolverine : Enemy of the State, but from a Kitty Pryde perspective. With a bonus Agent of SHIELD issue to conclude it.
Would make a fun two part animated movie.

I wonder if something happened between issues 127 & 128, like did Claremont change his mind and was going to do more than four issues but decided to only do four? It feels like two issues were skipped, at least one for sure.
This issue starts with Wolverine, Shadowcat and Sabretooth already being taken prisoner by the combined forces of the Hand and Hydra. Last issue ended with them about to make their attack, knowing it was a trap. So we are definitely skipping scenes, and we are not given a flashback sequence so time is being saved here.
Hydra wants to just kill the three intruders but typical Hand wants to brainwash them. Since the Hand is more involved in this mission, Hydra allows them to attempt to corrupt their souls.
The Hand leader, Matsuo Tsurayaba – who has Logan’s very distinct hair style, points out to Hydra Commander how the Hand is more committed, manpower wise, to this operation. I’m not sure how Kitty can be phased and unconscious. Since Claremont is writing this that means Kitty’s natural state is to be phased so that’s probably the rationale. Most other writers either don’t know that part of her history or just have her being in a traditional state of being. The Hand plans on corrupting their souls and turning them into Hand agents.
We see Kitty’s mindscape first. This isn’t a bad outfit for her, except that besides the mask, it is essentially just a black unitard. Kitty sees Logan and slits his throat, killing him (somehow).
There is an ad for Wesley Snipes’ first Blade film, the anti-Howard the Duck. Such a good film.
Now that Kitty is a killer, she shreds the one outfit into a new more appropriate one. But shouldn’t it be red, or would it look too much like Elektra’s? So instead, it is purple so it looks too much like Psylocke’s. It could have stayed blue but still revealing and at least be in her color scheme, or black & yellow.
Dream Kitty has adamantium claws too but Sabretooth really has those and still didn’t kill Wolverine.
Hand and Hydra leaders are still bickering over the right course of action. Hydra didn’t want to be part of this and this is exactly why.

We catch up to what Hydra is planning. Just good old fashion brainwashing as they have – Viper, Tyger Tiger and Jessica Drew – all still in green. So Tyger and Drew were taken after issue 125 and Viper after 126. Viper and Drew are former agents of Hydra, so their brain patterns are already on file.
Thanks to editor Mark Powers, we learn that Tyger has extensive modification, as seen in Uncanny X-Men 229, Page 13, at the hands of Marauder, Pretty Boy. I own issues 225 – 227 and then 230, so I’ll have to take his word for it. I like having the page marked, that’s pretty handy.
Wolverine’s mindscape, is back to the days of the All New All Different X-Men, this is post Krakoa as Beast, Angel and Iceman are still around. They turn on Wolverine and he has to fight for his life.
There is an ad for the upcoming X-Men 35th Anniversary –
This was in 1998, my first San Diego Comic Con and I was obsessed with these images. The printed ad includes Mutant X, which I was also nuts for. I had asked the Marvel guy (I wish I knew his name) but he said I couldn’t have them. If I was older, I would have offered to buy them, but I approached it like I was doing him a favor for not having to pack the big posters away. I was 16 so I wasn’t thinking in a way to outsmart a grown adult. My last SDCC was in 2004, when Spider-Man 2 was coming out. I still remember seeing that footage of Doc Ock waking up and the arms going on a murder spree, I was so hyped for the film after that. Still the best Spider-Man film, for my money though the costumes have gotten so much bigger since they moved to the white eyes for Spider-Man’s mask.
Jean is about to kill Logan when Sabretooth interrupts the sequence.
Meanwhile, Kitty saves Viper. Kitty is in yet another outfit, she’s getting as good as Jan van Dyne. Kitty isn’t holding anything back in this fight against Hydra.
Wolverine wakes up and Sabretooth agrees to save Kitty and Viper but not after they fight about it.
Kitty is in super killer mode, though she hasn’t killed any of these drones yet. Viper knocks Kitty out, before Kitty can kill anyone.
Once Logan and Sabretooth are done fighting, though it mostly looks like odd hugging, but they’re just going through the paces. Sabretooth is taken out by Tyger Tiger
Tyger is about to kill Sabretooth, somehow, when Kitty phases Sabretooth at the last moment. Viper wants to kill Sabretooth for starting this entire adventure. Kitty phases the boyz out of there and Viper swears vengeance.
Issue ends with Kitty and Logan recapping the adventure. They are wanted fugitives on Madripoor, and Logan & Viper are still married.
I believe that this whole time, Viper is being mind controlled by Ogun, but we’ll get to that in a later issue.

I wonder if the four art teams adds to my memory of these last two issues not being very good.
Issue opens with Sabretooth shouting that he is the king of the world – as Titanic came out a year earlier. Claremont must have thought it was safe to evoke the phrase but it is 18 years later and that film is still the only thing I associate that phrase with.
I’m not sure who is narrating the issue, I believe it has to be Kitty as it isn’t the two savages in this issue.
Kitty is unconscious and Sabretooth threatens to rape her but she’s underage so I guess he has limits. Except, that she has to be at least 18 by now, by the time Excalibur 120, she would have been at least 18 to 21. But if it prevents Sabretooth from doing anything physically to her, then fine, she’s 17.
Lowtown, Madripoor. Hand ninjas and Hydra goons are making their way through the city. They get attacked by someone who looks suspiciously like Captain America.
Wolverine is in the sewers, he’s here to interrupt whatever scheme the two fractions have. It feels like we skipped an issue between 126 and 127. I get that he fell into the ocean but then he came back up and into another plot.
Hydra and Hand are concern as now it seems like the Hulk’s Mr. Fixit is also on Madripoor.
Wolverine, while smoking and drinking (as he’s super kewl) is the one to posted the story of Mr. Fixit being on the island nation. His neck wound hasn’t healed yet, from Sabretooth so the smoking isn’t great for him.
Wolverine, who was also Captain America earlier, is now pretending to be the Hulk. I could have sworn this issue was in the Erik Larsen run of Wolverine – which I super enjoyed. Wolverine pretends to be the Human Torch next.
Hightown, Madripoor. An elevator opens in front of a slew of guys with guns.
Shadowcat confronts Bao Tien.
Bao Tien has helped get Viper captured, when she reached out to him for help.
Kitty and Sabretooth are working together, we’re definitely missing pages. This is definitely the most these two have hung out together. In Exiles, versions of these two will be on the same team but they barely spent much time together there too.
Wolverine does his best impression of Storm, Cyclops and Beast – which is odd as if someone was doing things like Beast, I would think they were just doing a claw-less Wolverine impression. Wolverine is doing all of this, so that those who are holding Viper know that Wolverine has friends and they are going to free Mrs. Wolverine. Wolverine has reached out to his friend, The Police Chief Tai. Tai isn’t able to provide any help, as he wants to live to see tomorrow. Tai offers the helpful advice that Madripoor needs a new prince at the seat of power.
Later, Wolverine smells Sabretooth and is ready to attack.

Issue opens with Logan restating that Viper is his wife. Or more precisely, that she is his fiance but it will be a very short engagement.
Logan’s lady friends are super upset, he’s going to marry a woman who just tried to kill them all. Except that Viper wasn’t going to kill them, just set up Wolverine to maybe do it. Kitty does seem to be taking it in good spirits. Jubilee seems to be the most upset about the news. Which is odd as she got off the easiest. Though I guess she was hunted for the better part of the night so she is entitled to be upset.
Viper offers to have Jean and Psylocke prove that Logan isn’t being tricked into the agreement. Since Viper is done answering questions, she begins to walk out of the room. Kitty and Lockheed try to block her path but Viper keeps walking through the pair.
Jean is upset as no one can marry Logan but her, I suppose. She likes having him be her safety if her current marriage doesn’t work out – which it won’t but we’re still years away from that.
Everyone goes home as they are horrible friends and don’t want to be there for Logan’s marriage. All but Kitty ends up leaving, as she’s his best friend. Lockheed left with Jubilee, there’s a story I wouldn’t mind reading.
Wolverine explains the story of how he owed Viper a blood debt. Seraph built the bar they are currently in. A mission went south and Seraph allowed Sabretooth to kill her so that a Pre-Madame Hydra Viper and Logan could escape. This is new back story.
As Kitty and Logan toast Logan’s upcoming wedding we see that Sabretooth has both Hydra and Hand goons.
Logan reflects on the Seraph adventure as Kitty comes into the room.
Since they are on Madripoor, Logan dresses like Patch, but without the eye patch.
For the longest time, if you Googled “Kitty Pryde” you were guaranteed to see her in the above purple dress. The years have been very kind to Kitty, as she looks stunning in that dress.
Kitty tried to invite Tyger Tiger and Jessica Drew but they couldn’t be bothered to arrive.
Viper doesn’t look too bad herself but for the first time, I’m getting Poison Ivy vibes from her. Probably as she usually wears full body suit, she has her own look and style. Here, her bust is exposed just like Poison Ivy’s but it is her wedding day so let’s all just support her.
The bride and groom get to say their “I Do”s and the minister is killed.
Sabretooth is going to add another lady of Logan’s to his kill list but Viper isn’t any ordinary lady. Viper would be pretty messed up if Kitty didn’t phase her in time. Sabretooth lunges at Kitty but she straight trips him up.
Sabretooth tries to taunt Kitty but Wolverine tackles him. Kitty narrated last issue and now Logan is narrating this issue. I wonder who narrates issues 127 & 128?
Logan tells Kitty to escape with Viper.
This is the first Sabretooth v Wolverine fight since Logan lost his adamantium.
Viper is feeling all sorts of nauseous, even though Kitty phased her in time.
Kitty watches as Sabretooth and Logan fall into the ocean. Kitty is piecing together both Sabretooth’s new fighting style and that one time she phased through Wolverine, back in the day.
Logan comes out, seemingly as the victor. Kitty starts to piece it together, she knows that Sabretooth is play playing.
To late, Kitty screams that Sabretooth has adamantium laced bones. He was purposely fighting Wolverine in a way that wouldn’t involve his claws or direct contact with his bones. Sabretooth breaks Logan’s claws, one of these Kitty will keep in time for Wolverine 100 and will mail one to Logan in X-Men 109.
I’m pretty sure Kitty has phased through Wolverine dozens of times and have never been shown to be ill after phasing through Logan.

We celebrate my wife and I’s eighth anniversary by celebrating not only Wolverine and Viper’s wedding but Chris Claremont’s return to Wolverine’s ongoing that he help launched. When this issue was in the hype phase, there were rumors that this could be the issue that Wolverine regains his adamantium. That doesn’t happen but he does gain something.
Issue opens with Jubilee running for her life. She’s being chased by the Phoenix Force.
I’m recalling how this issue was great and the next one was pretty good then the last two issues of Claremont’s brief stint (we’ll be reviewing all four of these issues over the course of the next few days) as not ending on a high note. Let’s see if my memory holds up.
Jubilee is treated to repeating what happened in Uncanny X-Men 251 (which I own and will review one of these days but not this month) where she freed Wolverine from a crucifiX. Jubilee suspects they are not in the Australian Outback as she was in Chinatown only a few minutes ago. Gateway is there but since he doesn’t talk, she can’t get any confirmation. Jean Grey, with the Phoenix Force but wearing a full green version of one of her uniforms. She implies that her and other women (we don’t get a full panel of who else is there but I can see Psylocke) have been gathered to serve a purpose. Jubilee isn’t going to play that game as she keeps trying to drag Wolverine along. At least he should be a tad lighter without the metal coating his bones.
In the catacombs under the city, Jubilee and Wolverine are confronted by – Tyger Tiger, Psylocke and Jessica Drew – also all dressed in green. This was during the time when Jessica Drew hadn’t been Spider-Woman in years. Jubilee uses her powers to flash a bright light and she is able to escape with Wolverine.
The pair are caught off guard by Rogue and Yukio. Yukio throws some daggers but Jubilee somehow strangely falls through the wall.
This whole time, I’ve been reading the captions as if they belonged to Jubilee but it turns out, they belong to someone else.
The narration boxes belong to Jubilee’s predecessor, Kitty Pryde! Kitty brought her good buddy, Lockheed, for this adventure!
Kitty is also in a green outfit but not a variation of any of her previous ones. She isn’t really one to show off those legs. I do like those short green gloves though. Yu draws a sweet Lockheed!
Who is Kitty narrating this to?
Is this the first meeting of Jubilee and Kitty? I would find that hard to believe except that Excalibur barely interacted with the rest of the X-Titles. This issue came out June 1998, the same month Excalibur 121 came out so I imagine this was a good way to remind people of her connections before she rejoined the main title.
Jubilee must be still under some effect, a she seriously thinks Kitty is responsible for Jubilee’s trip through memory lane as that isn’t really in Kitty’s powerset.
Kitty knows that Viper is behind this latest scheme, to turn the women in Logan’s life against him. Jubilee finally notices that Kitty has green hair and wearing a green outfit, so maybe Kitty is actually in on the plan. Kitty explains that due to her powers, she was able to escape before being given Viper’s mind controlling poison. Thus proving that Kitty is far better than those ladies who were put under.
Kitty wants Jubilee to lead them to Wolverine. Since it took so much time to explain to Jubilee everything, Jean and Rogue are almost to their location. Jubilee shouts for Gateway to teleport them out, just in time.
In the real Australia, Jubilee has some clothes stash away. Jubilee gets in her classic yellow trench coat, pink sunglasses and what is clearly a homage to DC’s Robin’s outfit with the red shirt and green shorts. We’ll see a full body shot on a below image.
Kitty has to borrow Jubilee’s clothes and Lockheed & Jubilee enjoy the fashion show. Kitty starts to have a good time with it too. Why does Jubilee even own that last outfit and why did Kitty even put it on?
Kitty eventually settles on a simple white shirt and a pair of blue shorts.
Kitty has an idea of where to find Wolverine.
Mount Logan, the highest point in Canada. Kitty instructs Jubilee in taking the time to learn about her teammates and her environments.
See Jubilee in the bottom row of panels? It doesn’t take much to realize that is clearly inspired by Robin’s costume.
Which was fun during Marvel vs DC when the two characters flirted with each other –
So during Amalgam when Batman and Wolverine were merged to create Dark Claw – it was awesome – it made perfect sense to combine Jubilee and Robin into –
Sparrow!
Kitty hints about how Sabretooth killed Silver Fox in Wolverine’s cabin. Which I can’t remember if that was a false memory or if that eventually did come to pass.
Kitty notices that Wolverine was here and not that long ago as his whiskey glass is still damp and his cigar is still fresh.
Behind Jubilee, a giant explosion occurs.
Rogue arrives and Jubilee distracts her as Kitty puts her down.
Tyger Tiger, who I’m glad Kitty name checks as I wouldn’t have recognized her. I’m not that familiar with the character but she has a gun to Jubilee’s head so there isn’t much needed to know. Kitty phases through Jubilee and tackles Tyger. For her thanks, Tyger shoots Kitty to her face!
Luckily, it wasn’t a real bullet. Instead Kitty’s entire body is encased with a substance that she can’t phased through.
Lockheed, the true hero that he is, jumps in front of Jubilee and spits hot fire so that Gateway can teleport the trio away.
Agarashima. Somehow in Kitty’s estimation of time passing, Wolverine in that “short time” went from Canada to Tokyo. That’s like an eleven hour flight, or so.
We finally get to see Wolverine! He doesn’t seem all that surprise to see his favorite lady friends.
Jubilee barely gets time to shout to Logan that Viper is after him, when Yukio tries to throw daggers at him. Logan and Yukio spar, as he clearly doesn’t want to hurt her. While distracted with that fight, Psylocke ninjas behind him and with the focus totality of her telepathic powers, digs a psychic dagger into his freaking head!
When Logan wakes up, he sees all of his lady friends as snakes – which is either on purpose by Viper or a sign of how horrible Logan views his friends. This transitions Logan into reminding himself of how Mariko died. So a reference to Silver Fox and now Mariko’s dead body, I believe the only lady in Wolverine’s life that isn’t seen is Storm. Storm, Carol Danvers and Mystique I guess, but this may be too early for Mystique to be seen.
Viper finally shows herself to Wolverine.
Poor Jubilee went from Canada, Japan to now Madripoor in a span on an hour. We finally get our entire cast in one place.
Viper is trying to get Jean to force Wolverine under Viper’s control.
We see someone, not in green, take out Tyger Tiger. Now that we are in Madripoor, Tyger is probably happy as she lives there.
Jubilee breaks Kitty out of her gel prision.
Black Widow makes up the fourth team member of the Rescue Logan Squad. I do like her taking out Jean and Psylocke out first, that’s pretty smart.
Wolverine tackles Rogue and she kisses him, to try to slow him down. Kitty, again, has to put Rogue down again. Kitty tricks Psylocke to put a psychic knife into Rogue’s head.
Black Widow, who this has to be the first time her and Kitty have been in comic together, right? Widow is holding her own against both Yukio and Jessica Drew.
Wolverine chases Viper as Kitty and Jubilee chase Logan. Jean hangs back and knocks everyone else out.
Viper didn’t mean to hurt Logan, she needed to bring him to her and this was her best plan. She reminds him of his vow. He’s still in a middle of a berserker rage so he isn’t listening.
Jubilee wouldn’t mind if Logan killed Viper but it isn’t really something Kitty wants to see. Kitty is going to find a way to slow Logan down. Meanwhile, Viper sums up her goals. On Seraph’s tomb, Logan vowed to do anything Viper asked, whenever she asked it.
Jean has made her way downstairs and is not happy. Kitty merges with Jean, which kicks Kitty like a government mule and snaps Jean out of her mind control.
Jubilee gets between Logan and Viper. She forces him to choose, to act like an animal or with honor like a man. Logan is all about honor and owning up to his word so this snaps him out of his little fit.
Some time passes, the poison is out of everyone’s system as the issue ends with Logan revealing that Viper is his life. Even Lockheed is in shock!

Old Man Logan, Part Five of Eight
Cover Dated February 2009
This is the only chapter of this famous story, as it is the big reveal of why Old Man Logan quit being Wolverine.
Here is what happened before. Â 50 years ago, the villains won and America was divided. Â The Wolverine is dead, his claws haven’t been popped, since that eventful day. Â Logan has been leaving in Sacramento, with his wife and family.
May I say, that I’m a huge sucker for fictional maps? Â I love just looking at them, at the landmarks that the map maker deems important. Â Then I look at where Yuma, Arizona is – here it is in the Kingdom of the Kingpin (formerly the Domain of Magneto). Â The names of cities hold so much potential story and history. Â Montana falls in the vast unclaimed area, the Wastleland, I believe they call it in this title.
Logan was living in Hulkland. Â To the right of the Wasteland, is Doom’s Lair, next is Clyde’s Pit and lastly, is The President’s Quarter. Â Certain villains have cities, along the path that Logan is now taking.
I’m getting ahead of the recap. Â Logan is a farmer, and the grandchildren of the Hulk, want Logan’s rent but he is pretty behind.
Clint Barton, the now blind archer – wants his old friend to cross the country with him. Â Logan agrees, as long as he doesn’t have to get involved with any violence. Â They are heading to New Babylon, which is in The President’s Quarter. Â What is in the package, that Clint has to deliver, is another mystery of the storyline.
They have met Moloids and clone tyrannosaurs, they are currently being stalked by the venom symbiote. Â At the end of last issue, Logan agrees to tell Clint what happened that day.
Now we are at this issue.
Back in the day, most likely a Tuesday – Jubilee tells Wolverine that every hero team is sending out a distress signal. Â The villains are rising up. Â There is a huge explosion, and it is on!
There is an ad for the Honda Fit, it breaks up my comic and this review.
Now, we get to the panel that got me to buy the issue. Â That brunette, in the third panel – telling everyone to get to the evacuation tunnels, that has to be Kitty Pryde, right? Â It is her or X23 but I say, X23 would be popping her claws and heading towards the attack. Â Kitty would hang back, and make sure the students were okay. Â There are not that many brunette X-Women, and not that many with a modest breast size. Â Sorry but in a world of Double Ds and larger, normal breasts stand out.
Marvel Database use to list Shadowcat, as being in the issue but I imagine now they don’t list either lady, as there is no way to prove which one it is. Â Unless Millar and McNiven have revealed the script for the issue or have been asked. Â I say it is Kitty and thus, I own this issue.
There is another panel, that she could be in, later but we’ll get to that one.
comicbookdb has Shadowcat listed for the issue, so they are with me, on this.
http://comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=157230
http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Wolverine_Vol_3_70
Wolverine starts to defend the Mansion, by himself. Â One would think that the other X-Men will eventually step up. Â He’s taking the charge, by himself.
Wolverine kills Doctor Octopus and Klaw, so fast. Â Too fast! Â Next is Stryfe!
Then it is these two no names. Â Is that suppose to be Demogoblin?
Wolverine slices Silver Samurai’s head, clear off!
After that, he starts asking where everybody is.
Two students are not sure and Wolverine tells them to get the heck out!
Wolverine then, somehow, slashes Blob but he is so focused on murder, that nothing is sinking in.
Sabretooth and Mister Sinister enter the fray and Wolverine punches Sinister to his face! Â Has that ever worked, to the extent that blood comes out of his face?
Sabretooth and Lady Deathstrike go down. Â As do Omega Red, Absorbing Man and Scorpion. Â Shocker even tries to do it. as if Wolverine would be easier to kill now that he has killed thirteen other villains.
So great that McNiven got to draw this assortment of villains. Â When would he be able to draw Scorpion or Shocker, before this?
There is a double page ad for Spider-Man : Web of Shadows, a game I wanted to play, when it came out. Â I recall it didn’t get great reviews.
The only villain to really put up a fight, is the last one – Bullseye! Â They fight for 90 minutes, taking pieces out of each other.
Wolverine straight up thrusts his claws through Bullseye’s chest.
I’m not sure if what is making all of this is possible, was just wearing off or if it was due to Bullseye being the last, but the fog starts to lift over Wolverine’s eyes. Â Bullseye calls Wolverine, friend, and this startles Wolverine.
Wolverine is holding Jubilee’s body! Â She was Bullseye! Â How she was able to withstand a 90 minute fight with Wolverine, is beyond me – much less take chunks out of him. Â OR! Even being able to survive one slash of his claws.
Turns out, the villains big plan to take the X-Men off the board, was to get the big ol’ dumb Wolverine to do it for them!
I like Mysterio, who is clearly a hologram – giving Wolverine shit for thinking that he could have taken out all of these named villains.
I’m surprised no one has ever had Wolverine face off with Mysterio, after this issue came out – but Mysterio has been off the board, for a while now. Â Last I read him, he was involved in Spider-Men, as Mysterio was also, Ultimate Mysterio!
Wolverine straight up murdered these X-Men! Â Gambit, Iceman, Havok (who was Stryfe, as he has no head!). Â Colossus, with who I thought was Shadowcat – on his chest but that is clearly Psylocke with her costume (butt sticking out, and all) and the purple tint to her hair. Â Cannonball, Storm, Longshot, Beast, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Polaris and even Forge is dead!
We cut to the present and Clint is being a good guy, not judging Old Man Logan for something he is clearly still broken by and it was fifty years ago.
Mysterio was so good that he could even affect the way Wolverine’s senses worked.
After Wolverine killed the X-Men, Logan walked away and kept on walking, for weeks, maybe even months. Â Logan decided to kill Wolverine, so he put his head on a railroad track and let a train run it over. Â He survived as, of course he did.
There is a hint of what happened to the other heroes, there was a giant battle in Vegas where the heroes fought the villains – and clearly lost.
There is an ad for Bendis / Deodato’s Dark Avengers, a pretty great title in a fun era of Marvel Comics. Â I only read issue eight, which was written by Fraction and what part of the Utopia crossover. Â Luke Ross was the penciler, so I don’t even own any issues with the main creative team.
Old Man Logan uses this story to emphasis why he doesn’t want to be a fighter, he uses his hands as a farmer.
Dwight’s Toll. Â I really like the choice to have a light page, after the bulk of this issue being so heavy on death. Â Dwight is a teenager (or maybe a twelve year old boy) who has an Ant-Man helmet. Â The kid only wants people to pay him eighty cents, to cross the bridge. Â For those who don’t pay – and many don’t, as we can tell from the view from below the bridge – get killed by a million ants. Â I do like the idea of this kid, knowing he has picked a silly amount for a toll so he gets to get his fair share of stupid kills but for those who know him (like Clint) they know to take the toll very seriously.
Doom’s Head, Illinois. Â Clint apologizes to Old Man Logan, for bringing him on this trip, where hazards are everywhere.
Issue ends with a giant T-Rex, with the Anti-Venom symbiote.
What an intense issue!

Wolverine vs The X-Men, Part Two of Three
Cover Dated May 2011
With this issue, I now own all three issues of this storyline. Â So thanks to my wife for taking me to Kelly’s Komix in Great Falls in Montana. Â A great store, if you happen to be in the area.
In the previous issue, the Red Right Hand killed Wolverine and sent his soul to hell. Â Demons took over his body, and fans called this Wolverine, Hellverine, which is pretty clever. Â That issue ended with the X-Men about to take down Hellverine, in protocols that they had at the ready. Â As this day, was clearly going to come again.
Inside Wolverine’s mindscape, he heads to the giant palace where he keeps the wall around his heart. Â There, he finds reinforcements for the horde of demons that are trying to snuff out the last of his soul. Â We see various Wolverines – Weapon X, Patch and Horsemen Death, amongst others.
Meanwhile. Magneto is fighting Hellverine. Â Hellverine recognizes Magneto from somewhere, he thinks about it as Magneto keeps throwing metal objects at his target. Â Hellverine recognizes Magneto from when he was a boy at the concentration camps. Â This issue came out in 2011, so Marvel is still holding onto the idea that it isn’t weird that Magneto is still walking around, making World War II references seventy years later.
Magneto is down but Namor flies and punches Hellverine into the ocean. Â On the shore, Cyclops and Emma are watching to see if this works. Â The ocean boils as Hellverine comes out of the water. Â Two down.
Cyclops gets ready for his role in the next events. Â Emma telepathically checks in on Doctor Nemesis and Fantomex, who are on their way. Â Melita, Logan’s girlfriend at the time, puts a special gun to Emma’s head. Â Which is completely unnecessary.
Oh, that’s right. Â This is before Gillen fixes Kitty’s fishbowl slash retread of Fantastic Four vs X-Men status quo. Â So silly that this was a thing and that it lasted a while. Â From Uncanny X-Men 522 to 538, sixteen issues so a tad over a year. Â It was a long time.
Along with Shadowcat, Jubilee, Storm and Rogue are on the scene. Â Which, if you are going to pick four of X-Ladies, those are the four to go with. Â Domino could have made it five but Melita is going to fill that fifth slot.
Emma isn’t interested in these ladies, she just wants to help Scott survive what is coming next..
Cyclops starts optic blasting Hellverine but it isn’t slowing the demon down.
Rogue punches Hellverine and once he is in the air, Storm controls the winds and carries Hellverine to Angel Island. Â My wife informs me that it use to be a military base and it shouldn’t be that populated. Â She is currently me now and believes it could have been Treasure Island and Angel Island is more like the Ellis Island of the West Coast. Â It is one or the other.
Emma informs Scott that they are going to do one more desperate brain raid. Â She didn’t think she could do it on her own but with the others, there is a chance. Â Emma has Scott promise to pull her plug, if she comes back brain dead, before her looks start to fade – it is the important things to discuss before a big fight.
Shadowcat informs Cyclops that they are not going to give up on Logan, as he wouldn’t give up on them.
There is a page, that shows all of the ladies, minus the one important one. Â This page also has an image of the full island. Â After showing my wife, she confirms that Angel Island is the Ellis Island, as the Bay Bridge would have been shown in the image, if it was Treasure Island. Â So Treasure Island is the military island and Angel Island was very popular during the twenties. Â Both are not that well populated, so we are still okay.
Once they land, Emma tells Storm that Hellverine needs to stay close to Emma’s body, as she needs the connection to be as strong as possible. Â Melita wonders if they have to hold hands and Emma laughs at her, they are not starting a pagan commune. Â Emma just needs them to close their eyes and clear their minds. Â Full full, clear eyes, can’t lose!
In Wovlerine’s mindscape, Weapon X is taking demons out, James Howlett, in a giant nightgown, is even in the fight. Â Demons are being snikt-ed all over. Â During this, Logan has been wearing samurai armor.
Acuna keeps to that style for the ladies’ mindscape armor. Â I like how the general individual’s color scheme is respected. Â Emma is in white, Jubilee in yellow, Rogue in green, Kitty is in purple. Â Which makes sense, oddly, but typically, blue is her go to color, especially if Jubilee already has claimed yellow. Â For some reason, purple and Shadowcat makes sense, even though she hasn’t really worn the color, that much. Â Melita is in red.
There is a house ad for Uncanny X-Men 535 & 536, Gillen and the Dodsons are bringing back Breakworld, so Kitty’s fishbowl days are now numbered in months.
Laying on their backs, in the sand, that can’t be comfortable. Â Jubilee is on her side, and that makes sense to me. Â Storm has Hellverine floating about in the sky and Doctor Nemesis & Fantomex are still on their way.
How excited must Kitty be, finally being out of the suit and no fishbowl head garb?
Nightcrawler, who is dead, so is able to dance around Logan’s mindscape.
There is a two page house ad for Fear Itself, which Matt Fraction was given the crossover keys to do. Â The only portion of the crossover I read, was the Uncanny X-Men issues that gave us Juggerlossus. Â It starts in April 2011, and the cover has a corner dedicated to the upcoming crossover. Â The tie-in issues that are promoted are – Fear Itself : The Home Front 1 / Invincible Iron Man 503 / Journey Into Mystery 622 / Avengers 13 / Secret Avengers 13 / Iron Man 2.0 5.
Issue ends with Nightcrawler finding Logan’s Phoenix door, so things are about to pick up for the conclusion. Â Which spoilers, Wolverine gets his body back.

Wolverine vs the X-Men, Part Three of Three
We kick Jessica Jones Month off with this issue!
Angel Island, San Francisco. Â Doctor Nemesis and Fantomex arrive on the island and see that Storm has Hellverine up in the air. Â Doctor Nemesis fires a bullet at Hellverine.
The bullet had the bubonic plague with a side of mouth cancer. Â The goal is to overwhelm the healing factor, to make him completely vulnerable. Â Storm is not pleased that the guys are here with full intentions to kill Wolverine’s body. Â I wonder if these two guys talked about this adventure while they were on X-Force together? Â Probably not.
Storm reveals that the lady X-Men are inside of his head, and Doctor Nemesis wants them out, immediately.
In the mindscape, Wolverine isn’t happy that the ladies are there as the stakes are too high for them. Â Melita, his girlfriend at the time, slices a demon in a half. Â This turns Logan on and they kiss.
Jubilee wants less kissing and more fighting. Â Kitty isn’t happy about the collateral damage the demons are doing to the surroundings. Â Which is smart, of the demons, Logan isn’t the target, his walls are as that is where his emotions and traits are located.
The ladies get separated and the best two pages of the issue occur. Â I wish these type of scenes were mandatory whenever characters visit one character’s mind, they should be able to open a few doors and we get to learn more about that character.
Emma finds a door titled, Sexual Fantasies. Â We see – Mystique, Emma Frost, Squirrel Girl, Spiral and Jewel. Â Jewel, of course, was Jessica Jones’ superhero identity – and this is her sole appearance in the issue. Â Squirrel Girl is also an interesting choice.
Emma wants to immediately start killing demons or have them kill her, so that she can forget about what she has seen.
Melita finds a room titled, Hopes and Dreams – it is nice that they are so handily labelled.  Of course, Logan dreams of Jean.  That is not the room his girlfriend should be looking into.
Shadowcat comes across two rooms, Reasons to Hate Myself / Secrets of Weapon X. Â Which I’m sure there are some crossover items in those two rooms. Â A fun thing, with Kitty’s panel, is the words “Doctor Rot Was Here” and he will be in the upcoming “Rot” storyline of this title that I own three of the four issues (305, 306 and 308) which is still a year away, that’s some great plotting there!
Jubilee sees, X-Men I’ve Had Sex With, which is a pretty handy room to have! Â Jubilee comments that the Danger Room was not meant to be used in such a way.
Rogue gets the best room to visit, How I Cheat At Cards. Â She always suspected he was cheating.
Wolverine crashed into the floor below and starts fighting a demon.
Fear Itself, Book Two has come out in May 2011.
Logan isn’t doing so well, good thing his buddy, Nightcrawler, also finds himself dead and is able to lend a hand and a tail and swords, even!
Outside. Â Hellverine spits hot lava at Storm, knocking her out. Â Cyclops has arrived on the island and starts fighting Hellverine.
The ladies are surprised to see Jean Grey, in the White Crown Phoenix costume, arrive. Â Emma confirms that this isn’t Jean from Heaven, this is Wolverine’s ideal Jean. Â This Jean is capable of shoving the ladies out of Logan’s mind.
Scott makes sure Emma is okay as Fantomex and Doctor Nemesis keeps shooting Hellverine.
Jean tells Logan that he has to let her go. Â I’m not exactly sure what that has to do with anything but that’s what she is telling him.
Da Boys are not really holding their own against Hellverine, until he starts vomiting. Â It is up to Cyclops to finish this.
Logan is contemplating his next move, as Nightcrawler keeps fighting off demons. Â Wolverine sees another door, People I Have To Kill Before I Die, this is all he needs to see so that he can commit to living.
There is a two page house ad for three new number ones. Â Moon Knight with Bendis / Maleev, Daredevil with Waid / Rivera / Martin and Punisher with Rucka / Checchetto. Â I know Waid’s run is pretty awesome. Â Bendis and Maleev had Moon Knight fight Count Nefaria and I’ve heard that Rucka’s Punisher was disappointing.
Cyclops is about to kill Wolverine but he mutters, Jean, and Scott stops himself.
Logan is Wolverine, again. Â Kitty couldn’t be happier, look at that smile!
Utopia. Â Wolverine is checking on Colossus, who got cut rather deeply. Â Cyclops offers Wolverine some beer, which I like how this is the way they put their beefs behind them.
There is an ad for X-Men Giant Size, where the Original Five meet the mutants of Utopia, but this is not referenced in Bendis’ All New X-Men, not is it ever referenced. Â They get away with the younger versions with this, as I’m sure they are pulled from after issue eight. Â But why the present day folks don’t bring it up? Â I’m not sure.
Wolverine doesn’t want to drink any beer.
The issue ends with Nightcrawler, still in the mindscape, Patch, James Howlett and a Rambo Wolverine are trying to gather the broken pieces. Â We see these doors – Mercy / Compassion / Favorite Lines of Poetry / Best Dirty Jokes that are all broken.
We see the Berserker write, REVENGE, onto a wall and Nightcrawler is not thrilled with this turn of events. Â The next issue of this series that I own is 16 and then it is 300 and then the Rot storyline.
The back cover is an ad for the video game tie-in for Thor’s first film. As far as I know, it still holds the record of fastest price drop. It started at the traditional (but silly) $59.99 and in two weeks, after negative reviews galore, it dropped to $19.99 and it was still not being sold.

Back in Japan, Part One of Four
I thought I didn’t buy this and recently, I had added it to my Wishlist but I’m glad that I did buy it that day. I can only imagine that I was thinking “one day, some website will claim this is Kitty Pryde in it, and I will have this at the ready” which is the type of thoughts I have.
Westchester.  Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.  Kitty is pulling Quentin by the ear, all the way to Wovlerine’s headmaster office.  In what I can only imagine happens all the time, Wolverine has place a sticky note that states simply “Gone to Japan!” I like that Wolverine placed an explanation  mark after words, as I doubt he vacations in Japan.  Maybe once he has a pile of dead bodies behind him but he never goes there to relax.
Chapter One – Welcome Back, Gaijin
Once over the Pacific, Wolverine fakes a bathroom break and that is when all of the passengers start their collective plan to kill him. Â It is nice to read Wolverine again, it has only been a few months since his death, but going from a slew of comic appearances to no comic appearances, I have noticed that he isn’t around as much.
Hours later, the plane lands, which Wolverine had to do himself.
Chapter Two – Secret of the Silver Samurai
Miyago Prefecture. Â The Lan Yashida Ancestral Compound. Â Yukio is in a wheelchair (for some reason, no editor note) she informs Wolverine that they buried the Silver Samurai where he fell, as he died protecting his family’s home.
The Red Right Hand did this and Wolverine has killed them all. Â So this probably happened at the end of Volume Three, before the renumbering.
Now that Clan Yashida is leaderless, the power void is being filled – which the Hand seems to be at the forefront. Â Wolverine implies that he will kill them all. Â Yukio jokes that he is ever the big American, come to save the Orientals. Â Wolverine is quick to point out that he is Canadian, which is very fun.
Some silly Yakuza start attacking Wolverine and Yukio. Â Honestly, why even attack Wolverine? Â You know you are going to die, maybe one just hopes that you lose only a few fingers and a pint of blood but why take that chance?
There is an ad for Secret Avengers 22 – New Creators, New Members and New Awesomeness.  Rick Remender and Gabriel Hardman.  The team is – Hawkeye, Beast, Black Widow, Captain Britain, Giant Man and Valkyrie .  Seems like an odd grouping but I suppose that Beast, Valkyrie and Black Widow are the hold overs from the previous team, Hawkeye must be the leader of the team.  Giant Man seems redundant with Beast on the team, and Captain Britain is their powerhouse, but also a third brain on the team.  I wonder if this was any good?
82 seconds later, a reference to how Yukio told a Yakuza member that they will all be dead in 90 seconds. Â Yukio wouldn’t mind some love making now that there are dead bodies, she still has some feelings below the waist. Â The Yakuza attacked as they wanted a clue to who Silver Samurai’s son is.
Chapter Three – Young Ronin in Love
Poor Amiko, Wolverine’s adopted daughter, is often forgotten about, until he comes back to Japan. Â Her and her new boyfriend, Shin – who must live in a world of never worrying about meeting her father – are about to break into a heavily guarded laboratory.
Apparently, they are not a “dinner and a movie” types, though it would be nice, Amiko thinks. Â They are trying to pass the security measures. Â One of them is holographic ninjas that capture Amiko.
Chapter Four – Same Old Snikt
Wolverine is interrogating fools, he learns a gang war is about to burst. Â A little town in Iwate Prefecture, in a temple, there will be a meeting of heads of gangs, to talk peace.
AvX is coming in April!
Chapter Five – Cooking with Sabretooth
The Yakuza want to pay Sabretooth a million dollars, cash, to be at the Los Angeles International Airport the next day. Â So the Yakuza don’t want Sabretooth attending that big meeting. Â He kills them all, a very old lady comes into the room. Â He has a very high tab with her and starts making out with her, it is gross.
Chapter Six – Last Day on the Farm
The Next Day. Â Iwate Prefecture. Â A well dressed man has come out to meet an old farmer, Shirato-san. Â The farmer keeps pretending like he doesn’t know what the man is referring to. Â He doubts they share the same employer nor that he knows anything to do with ninja business. Â The man keeps playing along but grows tired of this deception. Â The man is sadden that they have lost their way, that the today’s ninjas have become so enamored with the West and their cavalcade of men in ridiculous costumes. Â The man must work for the Yakuza, as he references how the Kingpin is the head of the organization now.
The man is Azuma Goda, the director of the Tokyo branch of the Hand. Â He is tired of how silly the Hand has become, a sad cliche. Â He has come to Shirato, has 45 years ago, he was told to come here to the farm, settle in, build a life and to wait for this moment to come. Â Which I sort of really dig this concept. Â Goda asks to see Shirato’s real face and now Shirato has killed his family that was out in the field.
Shirato has mpas of everything in a ten mile radius. Â Files one very resident and visitor, dating back 50 years. Â He has dug tunnels leading to the temple. Â I could have used an entire issue of Goda and Shirato talking and Shirato waiting for more affirmation on who Goda was.
There is an house ad for Marvel’s Social media links – twitter.com/marvel. / facebook.com/marvel / youtube.com/marvel / gplus.to/marvelentertainment / getglue.com/topics/p/marvel_entertainment – what the heck is GetGlue? Â It was apparently a television fans app, that was renamed TVtag that was shut down in 2014.
Chapter Seven – Welcome to the Temple of the Fist
Meanwhile, Los Angels International Airport. Â Sabretooth did show up, which seems awkward. Â Can one kill the messenger, offering a million dollars, and show up for the job, expecting to still be hired? Â I guess if you are Sabretooth, you do. Â Sabretooth got the suitcase, full of cash.
Japan. Â Iwate Prefecture. Â Prefectures are districts, I looked it up. Â The Yakuza, I believe, have Sabretooth taken care of. Â They have plans, if the Hand are so foolish to show up, to kill them in their stupid ninja faces. Â Goda does show up, right then. Â The Yakuza are not happy that Goda is present, instead of the Kingpin. Â Goda doesn’t respect the Kingpin. Â It was Goda who killed Boss Takenaka, he is responsible for this bubbling war.
Wolverine is on his way to the temple, he takes care of the Yakuza roadblock. Â He keeps riding his motorcycle until he falls for a silly wire trap and is knocked off his cycle. Â Sabretooth confronts Wolverine, he can’t believe that Logan is a teacher and running a school. Â His best guess at what class he teaches, 1001 Ways to Get Your Ass Beat, with Professor Jimbo Canucklehead. Â Sabretooth awesomely flies off with a rocket pack.
Sabretooth calls ahead to Goda, informing him that Wolverine is taken out and he shall be at the temple in thirty seconds. Â Once he hangs up, Wolverine has apparently been able to ride up the mountain (when his bike was destroyed, in pieces) and tackles Sabretooth out of the air. Â How did he get up there? Â Sabretooth references that Wolverine is going to wish he stayed in Hell and Wolverine tells him that Sabretooth is going to wish he stayed dead. Â Which is all fun and all, but ooof, does that shed some light on how silly these characters are now. Â The two keep fighting as they are falling down a mountain.
The Yakuza threaten to kill Goda, which is a cue for the black robed Hand (instead of the red robe ones) come out from the ground and start killing foolsh. Â While that happens, Wolverine and Sabretooth come crashing through the ceiling. Â That is a small town!
I can’t believe this (I haven’t read this issue in a while, and honestly, after the first page, I sort of skimmed it) a call goes out for . . . Sky Yakuza Go! Â I guess there was a plane full of parachuting Yakuza (coming to stores soon!) at the ready.
Sabretooth grabs a Hand ninja, using that guy’s body to knock Wolverine through the celing and way into the air. Â This is getting as action packed and silly as it gets!
Of course, Wolverine is back into the fight, one panel later. Â The Yakuza can’t believe Sabretooth is here, as he was suppose to be Los Angeles. Â Which now I’m the foolish one as I should have realize that one can’t be in LA and in Japan, within a few hours.
The Hand tries to get Goda out of the temple but he wants to stay, the guest of honor hasn’t arrived yet. Â Goda turns to see Amiko, who is his prisoner. Â She threatens that her father is going to kill him. Â A wall explods and Goda is excited that his guest as arrived. Â Meanwhile, Sabretooth – the LA one – calls and leaves a message for Sabretooth. Â I like how his voicemail message is “You have reached the voicemail of Victor Creed, leave a damn message.” Â Like, since he used his real name, do you hear the message as him sounding very calm and level until the angry and curt “leave a damn message” portion is said. Â That’s how I read it.
Through the wall comes . . . Shin, Amiko’s boyfriend and . . . the son of the Silver Samurai! Â It is all connected!
Next Issue : More Claws! Â More Guns! Â More Ninjas! Â Plus, Mystique (who was the LA Sabretooth) + Sabretooth = The hottest and deadliest new couple in the Marvel U! Â And the All-New Silver Samurai kicks some ass! Â But whose? Â Find out next month in Wolverine #301!
The rest of the issue is a preview of Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi’s Wolverine : Sabretooth Reborn.
There is a fun cover gallery of the last 300 Wolverine issues (of the ongongs) which doesn’t count the original four issue miniserie by Claremont and Miller, which is why I never consider that “Volume One.”
This is the only issue I own of this arc but what a fun anniversary issue!
