Hellfire Saga Part Four

Wolverine and the X-Men 34 Kitty 1

I liked this penultimate issue to the Hellfire Saga.

I like how you can’t do permanent damage to any of these characters, so the next best thing, is to destroy their clothes.  That’s a nice touch.

Wish Wilhelmina and Husk looked more different from each other, but as thy were in different scenes, it was never hard to distinguish the two if them.

Kade keeps taking a beating this issue.  Good job, Broo!

We might be losing Broo now, but we probably have done everything there is to do with the character.  I wished we got original Broo back, but I like that they are either postponing it as long as possible or never doing it.  That is pretty impressive.  Also, you can only do that with non-movie characters.

Some big action sequences, with all the different types of Krakoas, and Iceman getting to create giant ice shaped robots.

We hear that Bobby has not gotten to second base with Kitty yet.  Pretty impressive.

Once Kitty gets to the actual Hellfire Academy, thoe kids put something in tge walls that both hurts Kitty to phase through them, but also dampens telepaths.  Great moment with how Letterer Clayton Cowles gets to reveal the broken speech bubble from Rachel.  Very nice touch.

Poor Toad and Husk, they are going to have a long conversation once this arc is over.

Kade believes he is about to win, right when the other Hellfire members are about to turn on him.

Astonishing X-Men 65

Artist is Gabriel Hernandez Walta

Color Artist is Cris Peter

This conclusion wrapped up fast!

Mystique doesn’t keep the Death Seed long at all.

Awesome that it is Kitty who takes it out of her.  I thought maybe Kitty was going to turn evil just by holding it as she disappears afterwards, but the story doesn’t go in that direction.  She hides it somewhere, which who knows if that is ever going to get picked up ever again.  Maybe during the next Apocalypse story, whenever that happens.

Bobby’s father was not killed last issue.

Apparently Iceman makes for a far better villain than a hero.  Which I sort of like that he knows that, and doesn’t like that but has to be a hero as if he ever turn bad again, it would just be the same fight all over again.

I really like that Liu made a reference to Uncanny X-Men 350, with how Gambit had to make his way home from Antarctica after being banished there.  Which is still one of the oddest choices the X-Men have made as a team.  Plus, that comic came out in 1997, 14 years ago.  She really didn’t have to make the connection but it is totally cool that she did as that was a big moment in Gambit’s life as he was kicked off the team and pretty much left for dead.  Odd that Karma knows that, but as she herself was left for dead once, maybe she’s keeping track of stuff like that.

Really wish I knew the story with Opal, I wonder if it is even interesting to read for myself, or is it better to just have it be summarized like we get here and last issue.  Does seem to be a messed up thing to do, tell a guy he is the father and then tell him he is not when he clearly can’t handle it.  Of course, I imagine that, since this is a comic, that Bobby was meant to be the father, but a new editor came into the title and realized you can’t have one of the Original Five be a deadbeat father, as you already have that with Cyclops.  Unless Bobby was first at it.  Wonder which issues this whole thing takes place during.

http://www.comicbookdb.com/character_chron.php?ID=3233

I bet it was during the Iceman mini.  She only has 26 appearances, and I bet you could own them all under 50 dollars.  She first showed up in X-Factor.  I thought she was from the 60s, that must have been a different girlfriend.

Liu does a great job writing Kitty, especially with the monologues.  Kitty sure likes to speak at length.

I also dig how no one is in a costume besides Warbird, Mystique and Thor.  Which is odd, as their suits are temperature-controlled.

I also like how Kitty can phase multiple people as long as she is holding one person, and that person is holding a different person.  She can phase an entire human chain, which comes in handy.

Not exactly sure why someone can’t place Bobby in jail, as people are dead, on such a huge scale.  Maybe as he would get the chair, but hopefully it isn’t due to no cell can hold him.  As he is a hero and should just stay in the cell under his own influence.  Plus, it is the Marvel Universe, there is a cell to hold him or at least, that can attempt to.  There should be a Hero Prison, like during Civil War, Prison 41 I want to say, that heroes voluntarily go to to serve a limited sentence for times like these.  Kept off the books and can leave whenever.

Astonishing X-Men 65 Kitty 1

Astonishing X-Men 65 Kitty 2

Astonishing X-Men 65 Kitty 3

I could see Kitty and Bobby breaking up at the end, but he was under mind control, so she most likely gives him a pass, as she is friends with Wolverine and this type of thing happens to him all the time.

I have no interest in the next issue, which is a shame as I really enjoyed this arc but I need more than Karma, Warbird, Cecilia Reyes and Vampire Jubilee to be interested in a comic.

I wonder if we are going to get Crying Bobby as the legacy of this storyline.

Just read the description of X-Factor 63, and it states Opal is adopted but only learned of it recently and now she wants to find her birth parents.  What a messed up to thing to then do to a former boyfriend.  Plus, she names her son, Robert, as well.  Hopefully her son has not been told about how Iceman could be the father or could not be the father, as he grew up, as that is a horrible thing to do to a child.

Okay, Robert first appears in that Iceman mini in 2001, that probably deals with all of this as Opal doesn’t appear again between that mini and this arc here.  There probably is a website that has a review of it out there.

http://www.uncannyxmen.net/db/issues/showfaq.asp?fldAuto=56

Sounds like Opal was probably forced to lie to Bobby about being the father.  He knows by the end that he isn’t so it wasn’t a long standing plot point until now.  I just read the brief descriptions for each issue as it doesn’t sound very good.

Marvel November 2013 Solicitations

http://www.newsarama.com/18678-marvel-comics-november-2013-solicitations.html

I should add before I get too far into this, that I’m starting a new job in September and hopefully with this extra money, I can keep my comic habit going.  Thought October was going to be the end for me and new comics.

INFINITY #6 (of 6)
JONATHAN HICKMAN (W) • JIM CHEUNG (A)
COVER BY ADAM KUBERT
• All roads lead to this!
• The over-sized conclusion of the Marvel Summer event!
• The heroes of Earth versus the forces of Thanos!
56 PGS./Rated T+ …$4.99

Pending on how much the X-Men are involved in this, might have no interest at all.

INFINITY: THE HUNT #4 (of 4)
MATT KINDT (W)
STEVEN SANDERS (A)
Cover by SLAVA PASARIN
INFINITY TIE-IN!
• The super student teenagers of the Marvel Universe take on Thanos’ forces!
• The seeds of a future Marvel event are planted here!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

      Same goes for this one.

CATACLYSM: THE ULTIMATES LAST STAND #1 (of 5)
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • MARK BAGLEY (A)
Cover by MARK BAGLEY
THE BIGGEST ULTIMATE EVENT YET! MARVEL’S GALACTUS VS. THE ULTIMATES
• AGE OF ULTRON ripped a hole into the Ultimate Universe
• GALACTUS came through…hungry
• Is this the last stand of the Ultimate heroes?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Pending on if the Ultimate X-Men get involved, might miss out on this whole thing

CATACLYSM: THE ULTIMATES LAST STAND #2 (of 5)
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • MARK BAGLEY (A)
Cover by MARK BAGLEY
• The ULTIMATES discover where GALACTUS has come from
• If they send the WORLD DESTROYER back to where he came from all that will do is create more destruction and havoc!
• MILES MORALES is headed to the Marvel Universe
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

I would imagine that the X-Men would get a reference in the solicits.  Wow, looks like this is shaping up to be a bit of a Marvel/Ultimate crossover, that’s pretty cool.

Cataclysm: Ultimate X-Men #1 (of 3)
Joshua HALE FIALKOV (W) • ALVARO MARTINEZ (A)
Cover by Mariusz SIERGIEJEW
Variant Cover by GABRIEL HARDMAN
• The mutants just survived a war between themselves that almost destroyed both sides!
• As GALACTUS threatens to eat the world, a secret weapon is put in place to stop him.
• But will it be the thing that finally wipes all of mutant kind out of existence?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

There you go!  Does seem to be a big event with all of these miniseries coming out of it

MARVEL KNIGHTS: X-MEN #1 (of 5)
Brahm Revel (W) • Brahm Revel (A/C)
Variant Cover by PAOLO RIVERA
• Marvel Knights presents Brahm Revel’s thrilling and dark X-Men adventure that asks: what happens when your past comes back to kill you?
• Wolverine, Kitty & Rogue set out on the road to rescue new mutants from being murdered. But their help may not be welcome in this backwoods town–and the murderer may be closer to them than they think.
• A gritty murder mystery told by the talented and new to Marvel creator, Brahm Revel (Guerillas).
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

I thought this was going to be only three parts, but it has Kitty so that’s already pretty awesome.

AMAZING X-MEN #1
JASON AARON (W) • ED MCGUINNESS (A/C)
An AMAZING new era for the X-Men starts here! Ever since his Nightcrawler’s death in X-MEN MESSIAH COMPLEX, the X-Men have been without their heart and soul. After learning that their friend may not be gone after all, it’s up to WOLVERINE, STORM, BEAST, ICEMAN, NORTHSTAR and FIRESTAR to find and bring back the fan favorite fuzzy blue elf! Super star artist ED MCGUINNESS (HULK) joins master X-Writer JASON AARON (WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, X-MEN: SCHISM) to bring you the most exciting comic on the stands!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

I’m really hoping Kitty shows up in this eventually as it is a real shame that Kurt is back alive and Kitty is back on Earth and yet, not near each other.  Nice that the Jean Grey School has a field team so now the Wolverine and the X-Men title can be more about the school itself.  Maybe

X-MEN #7
BRIAN WOOD (W) • TERRY DODSON (A/C)
• The six-part “Muertas” arc kicks off with the return of Lady Deathstrike!
• Can a new Sisterhood be far behind?
• Meanwhile, the X-Men regroup following the Battle of the Atom – and a new member joins the team!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Terry Dodson!  This title just keeps getting better and better!

WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN # 38
JASON AARON (W) • PEPE LARRAZ (A)
Cover by NICK BRADSHAW
• X-MEN BATTLE OF THE ATOM may be over, but its effects are many!
• Wolverine takes on a new enemy- SHIELD?!
40 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Rather this book stuck with the entire school but maybe Battle of the Atom changes the status quo.

ALL-NEW X-MEN #18 & 19
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • Issue #18 – Stuart Immonen (A)
Issue #18 – Cover by BRANDON PETERSON
Issue #19 – BRANDON PETERSON (A/C)
• The X-Men are shaken to the core by the Battle of the Atom. So much that we can’t show you the cover of ALL-NEW X-MEN #19!
• Kitty Pryde is particularly is shaken by the events of the X-Men crossover. With her students gone, what is Kitty to do?
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

I would love for this title to just become a Kitty solo title, that would be awesome!  She is on the cover to issue 18.  I figure they will just cancel the title once the Original Five go back to their time.  Maybe its just a few wrap up issues and then its over.

X-MEN: GOLD #1
CHRIS CLAREMONT, STAN LEE, LOUISE SIMONSON, FABIAN NICIEZA (W)
WALTER SIMONSON, BOB MCLEOD, AND MORE! (A)
Cover by OLIVIER COIPEL
• It’s the 50th Anniversary of the X-Men, ring it in with some of the greatest creators to ever work on the X-Men!
• CHRIS CLAREMONT is joined by classic X-Artist BOB MCLEOD to bring you an untold story of the X-Men starring Cyclops, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Kitty Pryde and Rogue!
• Also jam-packed with all-star creators from X-Men past including STAN LEE, WALTER SIMONSON, LOUISE SIMONSON AND FABIAN NICIEZA!
64 PGS. /All-new Material/One-Shot/Rated T+ …$5.99

    Chris Claremont AND Kitty!?! Awesome!

UNCANNY X-MEN #14
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W)
CHRISTOPHER BACHALO (A/C)
• The effects of X-MEN: BATTLE OF THE ATOM are felt!
• Magneto goes off on personal mission that sets him at odds with much of the X-Men and Marvel Universe.
• The new Xavier School has changed, but how?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

If Illyana is not still in this title, I’m done with it

WOLVERINE # 11
PAUL CORNELL (W) • ALAN DAVIS (A/C)
• With the world on the brink of viral apocalypse, Logan and Kitty Pryde face down the Thirteen Ninjas of Sabretooth’s Hand!
• And that’s not all – enter Lord Deathstrike and the Silver Samurai!
• It all comes to a head with one final moment that will change the face of Wolverine – forever!
32 PGS./Parental Advisory …$3.99

The Alan Davis cover to this is simply beautiful.  I want it on a shirt or something, will have to settle for the issue itself, I guess

Usually I don’t care about the trades section but since the Top 50 Storylines still on my mind:

X-MEN: PHALANX COVENANT HC

But these Phalanx are far more than their creators bargained for — and they plan to summon their parent race to overtake Earth! When the Phalanx take out the X-Men, the remaining members must split into three teams: to save young mutants from the Phalanx’s clutches, to prevent their foes from contacting their homeworld and to rescue the X-Men! But even with the aid of the rogue Phalanx unit Douglock, can these ragtag groups succeed? Collecting UNCANNY X-MEN (1963) #306, #311-314 and #316-317; EXCALIBUR (1988) #78-82; X-MEN (1991) #36-37; X-FACTOR (1986) #106; X-FORCE (1991) #38; WOLVERINE (1988) #85; and CABLE (1993) #16.
552 PGS./Rated T …$75
ISBN: 978-0-7851-8549-9

Can only say the Excalibur issues, 78-82, were not terrible.  $75 is way too much but I do like having the complete storyline available.  that and those issues of Excalibur will never be printed again until they do an Essential Excalibur set, which would be awesome.
Hey, Spider-Man Gathering of the Five trade is being released, that reminds me of my Spider-Man hey days.  Such a fun era.
Eight Maybes
Six Buys
Should be $20.00 at least, which isn’t horrible.  14 times three is $42 which is over my $30 limit but I imagine there will be delays and also, Kitty or Ultimate Kitty will not show up in most of those maybes so we should be okay.
My heart always beats a little faster in anticipation when I see the new solicits but that’s why I do the totals at the end to realize that it isn’t that horrible.

Teams : Excalibur

Posted by John Klein III on August 14, 2013
Posted in: Teams. Tagged: Excalibur. 1 Comment

Kitty was part of Excalibur its entire run from 1987 to 1998.

The Original Team all was formed in the one shot, Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn # 1

Captain Britain

Meggan

Rachel Grey

Nightcrawler

Shadowcat

Lockheed

Widget

And that was the team until they started adding people with:

Kyun Issue 46

Cerise 47

MicroMax

Feron (70)

Dr. Moira MacTaggert (71)

Amanda Sefton (75)

Douglock (78)

Wolfsbane (90)

Pete Wisdom (91)

Colossus (92)

Mimic (124)

Last year, I reread the entire series from issue one all the way to 125 and it dips and raises but it is a fun series to revisit every so often.  Such a great series and still holds up fairly well too, especially the Alan Davis / Mark Farmer issues as does the Warren Ellis issues.  Cross Time still feels like six issues too many but having those fill ins didn’t help the case.

I keep having the thought of which mutants Kitty has worked with over the years and which teams she has been on.

Uncanny X-Men

Issues

139 – 148

Angel, Colossus, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Storm, Wolverine

149 – 170

Colossus, Cyclops, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Storm, Wolverine

Colossus, Cyclops, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine

Misses out on Secret Wars, Lockheed gets to go through

193 – 200

Colossus, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Rachel Grey, Rogue, Wolverine

201 – 213

Colossus, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Rachel Grey, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine

Joins Excalibur

361 – 380, the 35th Anniversary era.  She is there a little after 380, but that’s when all the crossovers begin again.

Colossus, Gambit, Kitty Pryde, Marrow, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine

Goes to college and has various other adventures, including joining the Astonishing team

Then we join Cyclops’ We Are All X-Men era also known as the Matt Fraction years.

Kitty returns in issue 522, but misses out on Second Coming, completely

526 – 529

Angel, Cecilia Reyes, Colossus, Cyclops, Dazzler, Doctor Nemesis, Emma Frost, Fantomex, Hope Summers, Iceman, Kavita Rao, Kitty Pryde, Madison Jeffries, Namor, Northstar, Psylocke, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine

530 – 534

Angel, Cecilia Reyes, Colossus, Cyclops, Dazzler, Doctor Nemesis, Emma Frost, Fantomex, Hope Summers, Iceman, Kavita Rao, Kitty Pryde, Madison Jeffries, Magneto, Namor, Northstar, Pixie, Psylocke, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine

534.1 – 544

All New X-Men 15

Nice seeing Lafuente’s art again.  I know him from the second volume of Ultimate Spider-Man.  Where he also got to draw Ultimate Iceman and Kitty Pryde.

All New X-Men 15 Kitty 1

Which this issue, all that Kitty does is make out with present day Iceman.  Which is throwing young Bobby’s world into orbit.  I know Astonishing exists in its own world “unofficially” but if he thinks making out with teacher is bad, wait until he learns he is responsible for hundreds of deaths, including maybe his own father.

Nice to see Rachel and teen Jean finally be face to face, we get it twice here.  They have been on the same page before, such as with Scarlet Spider 17, comes to mind.

I like Logan getting mad that everyone is either taking his stuff or breaking it.

I do not care for how Jean keeps reading people’s minds without permission or with any skill.  Weird that Hank would be having those thoughts too.  It isn’t the same as seeing a girl from high school so many years later and thinking of her again.  It’s more of a going back in time as an adult, and being still attracted to that young lady.  Though his thoughts are more align to daydreaming innocent thoughts, he is her teacher now.  It is like the whole Professor Xavier / Onslaught thing, maybe that’s what it is reminding me.

I like seeing young Bobby and Scott hanging out, those two are not one of the natural pairings you get with the original five X-Men.  Wish the red head wasn’t the one who came to Scott, but that’s his type , if he can’t have Jean, he will just find another red head.

Poor Dazzler fans, that’s not her there.

That double page with Jean and young Hank looks beautiful.  Great emotions, the layout is great.  There’s something abiut the way Lafuente draws Jean’s face, you can tell why three out of four guys are attracted ro her.  Which really, if you think about it, of course Hank “loved” she was the only girl he was  allowed to see until they all graduated.

The page where they are  kissing, reminds me that they really need new outfits.  They are walking around with booty shorts, and everyone is just cool with it.

Last page, is Jean forcing herself on Hank try to change the future?  As it doesn’t matter, Xavier is going to mind wipe them anyways.

Can’t believe Battle of the Atom starts next issue!  Going to be an intense twi months!

X-Men Legacy 14

I bought this issue as there is a panel depicting all the people Pete Wisdom has lost, as David Haller, Legion, is making him see it.  In the panel is Nightcrawler, Maureen, his mother, Kitty Pryde, and John Sublime.  Now I know what happened to everyone but Maureen and his mother.  I take it that he lost Maureen some time recently.  His mother, I will have to assume that this is the Marvel Universe and he lost her a while ago.

I have liked Pete Wisdom from very on. I am not one of those guys who despise Wisdom.   No, I fall more into the Can’t Stand Colossus camp.  As far as former boyfriends of Kitty’s go, I would have to rank them as:

Pete Wisdom

Ultimate Peter Parker

Iceman

Ultimate Iceman

Colossus

Earth X Colossus

Age of Apocalypse Colossus

Shame that Alistaire Stuart, Doug Ramsey, heck even Shan Coy Mahn never got off the fround.  This is why you will see Marvel keep throwing her back to Colossus all the time, there is no one else.

Which is something I have never understood about television series where the first dame we see the main male character fall for, we have to cheer him on his quest and once they break up, we want them back  together.  In RL, people date other people all the time, and we don’t pine for former loves when there are other options.  But with television series, it feels like there is only ever the first option we see.  It’s just odd to me that our entertainment wires us like that.

Back to the issue, the comic has two moments I really like and have read a couple times now.

The scene where Haller, he doesn’t like being called Legion anymore as it is pretty insulting to someone with his disease, explains the threat at hand.  There are dozens and he explains it via which characters are located where in Britain and what they are going to do.

The follow up scene where it pays off and you see that these heroes do basically do what Haller said they wouldd do, but with hero twists to them.  As that is what they do, they are heroes.  By doing so, they make England more tolerant to mutants.  Which is nice.

The heroes are: Lila Cheney, Psylocke, Chamber. Pixie, Alchemy, Liam Connaughton (who I don’t know, but he blows things up by just thinking about it), and Pete Wisdom.

Issue ends with David’s mother going to appear next isue.

Primer Part Three

The book is broken down in two teams.

Away team is Storm, Psylocke, Rogue, Rachel, Sublime, Jubilee and baby.

X-Men V3 3 Kitty 1

X-Men V3 3 Kitty 2

Home team is Kitty Pryde, Bling, Hellion, Pixie, and Primal.

I completely forgot that Primal was still around, I only own six issues of Generation Hope.  He had that one good scene where he is on trial.

Sublime is hitting on Rachel.  She doesn’t seem put off by it.  She hasn’t really been romantically linked to anyone since her first appearance with Franklin Richards.  In Excalibur, Alistaire Stuart had feelings for her, but she never seemed to notice.

The bomb at the mansion did not explode, it released something into the air.

Not sure what other comic or who would have yelled at Bling for damaging the school, as none of the teachers seem to be the yelling type and the school gets damaged so much already.  But I get not wanting to get yelled at.

Bling should know that if you got Kitty having your back for forever, that you have a friend for life.

Once the away team gets to the hospital, there is a panel with Jubilee and baby where the baby is mimicking Jubilee’s gesture.  So cute!

I like Kitty knowing that while she has to destroy the Danget Room, it is going to be expensive to repair.  That’s what happens when you are on staff.

Seems weird, like we are missing a huge scene wherein Omega Sentinel gets control of herself again and kicks Arkea out of her system.  Like Wood could have used a fourth issue with Coipel.  But that’s okay as I would have summed it up like that anyway.  Looks like Omega Sentinel and Rogue are going to be the X-Men team for a second time.  Hopefully, it goes smoother than the first time.  At least this team now, doesn’t have any active villains on it.

Jubilee’s son’s name is Shogo Lee.  I forgot her last name wad Lee. Jubilation Lee, doesn’t get more 90s than that folks.

The conversation between Rogue and Storm harkens back to that missing scene.  When did it fet dicey?  Probably cut back to it next issue.

Next issue promises an appearance by Wolverine.  It makes sense as Jubilee added a new member to her family and Logan would take an interest in that.

There is a variant cover to this issue that I added to my wishlist.
