There is an Original Trek meets Original X-Men (plus Bishop, Storm and Wolverine – of course) but that one doesn’t involve Kitty so it lacks being in my collection. This one, involves the best series of the Star Trek franchise – The Next Generation. Largely due to them having the best captain, Jean-Luc Picard. Though those first two seasons are hard to watch, largely due to the heavy focus on Wesley Crusher and Data. So the next generation of the Enterprise meets the next generation of the X-Men.

This story takes place a minute after Star Trek : First Contact –

In that film, old nemesis (and possibly the most dangerous) The Borg go back in time to stop humans “first contact” with an alien race. Hence why this is titled, Second Contact. The Enterprise is in back in time, already but not only go further in time but they also go into an alternate universe where the X-Men are.

In fact, this comic starts one minute after the end credits of that film. Which I really need to see if I can find a copy of the film to watch.

The cast of the two teams are –
Star Trek : Next Generation : Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T. Rider, Commander Data, Commander Deanna Troi, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge, Lt. Commoner Worf and the Borg. X-Men : Wolverine, Storm, Angel, Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Banshee, Kang, Sentinels and the Thunderbolts.

Captain’s Log. April 5, 2063 – or so. The Enterprise is trying to wade through time to get back to their present. Once out of warp, they notice they are not near their Earth.

Editor “Continuity Chief” Timothy Tuohy lets us know that this issue takes place before X-Men Zero Tolerance, Heroes Return and Thunderbolts 10 – so we know exactly where we are.

Their attempt to go forward in time has caused them to go backwards in time. Geordi informs them that they need to replace their processing core. Crusher tries to explain that this primitive Earth shouldn’t have that type of continuity. Riker corrects her, there is Shi’ar tech that has been located and will work. Little do they know how much alien life has come into contact with this Earth. Picard is going to send two away teams – to the two locations in North America that has the technology they need.

The first team – Worf, Riker and Crusher, come across the Thunderbolts. In the late 90s, in Star Trek time, New York City should be in the Eugenics War. The three have come to the Baxter Building, which is currently the homebase of the Thunderbolts. Their twelfth issue is so great.

Since the first team came across costume folk, they abandon that goal and try a nice country home in Westchester.

Banshee likes that the X-Men have come together, not during a time of crisis, but to just hang out. This really is a decent group of seven X-Men. Angel serves as the Original Five placeholder; Kitty, Kurt and even Colossus represent Excalibur as well as the inclusion of Storm and Wolverine adds to the 35th Anniversary era. Banshee is the lone holdout, except he adds another face from the Second Class of X-Men.

Kitty likes it when they gather too.

The second away team is – Geordi, Data and Troi. Geordi locates the Shi’ar tech behind a panel. Before he can make much progress, Wolverine pops his two outer claws around Geordi’s throat. Data grabs Wolverine by the shoulder and merely flings him across the room. We get a fun match up between Data and Colossus. Colossus throws a punch, Data tries to catch it but ends up on the other side of the room, as well.

Troi gets between the boyz and quickly explains that they are from the Enterprise. Wolverine recognizes the name of the starship from the previous teamup.

Later, Picard can’t believe that he is following in the footsteps of his most illustrious predecessor.

Such a great double splash page of two groups together. The X-Men took the time to get dressed, as did Geordi, Data and Troi.

We get a very quick recap of the previous crossover. Picard also recaps his film, so now everyone knows what happened before they each woke up this morning.

Kitty, as the smartest person in the room, announces that the Enterprise being here is causing a major upset in the timestream.

I love how much Wolf and Wolverine (who are great together) are so over timelines and alternate Earths. A stable of both franchises.

Troi states that an evil presence is is about to arrive.

That force is . . . Kang! An Avengers villain but the X-Men don’t really have a time traveling foe so the villain borrowing makes sense. Always better to use an established character instead of creating a new one.

Is only Banshee facing Kang? That’s not good staging on Kang’s behalf.

Kang doesn’t waste too much time explaining the stakes. There is a grave disruption in the time space continuities, so the two franchises’ histories are about to mix. As fun as it is to read, it isn’t great for the characters. There are two huge anomalies that need intimidate attention.

I do like Picard and Storm having asides with each other.

Riker’s providing a log. Kang gave them eight chronal compass watches, so there will be two groups of four characters. Team One is – Colossus, Picard, Troi and Kurt. Team Two is – Wolverine, Data, Storm and Worf. A bit of an odd grouping for both sets. At least Wolverine and Worf makes sense. Surprised the writers didn’t try to put Colossus and Data on the same teams, or some other fun combo like Picard and Storm on the same team.

That leaves poor Kitty, Angel and Banshee just standing around on the Enterprise-E.

Team One goes to the Days of Future Past timeline – the most famous of the X-Men’s alternate histories. Makes sense that Colossus is on this team as his future self is in the storyline. Storm was too so she really should have been on this team. I guess Wolverine and Kitty could have been there too.

Kurt talks about this as if it makes perfect sense, I guess Rachel probably painted a very visual telling of this future. 2013 is still the far future, in the late 90s. Filthy flatscans begin to throw rocks at the mutants and Starfleet officers. Sentinels arrive on scene and everyone scatters.

This happens during Star Trek Next Generation’s Best of Both Worlds Part II and Deep Space Nine’s pilot, Emissary, during Captain Sisko’s flashback. Picard was assimilated into the Borg fold at this point. The Borg use his knowledge of Starfleet to make short work of the opposition.

So for those folks who are not familiar with Star Trek / Borg canon, that’s the best I can do. I hope it helps.

Worf and Wolverine start tearing into the Borg. Storm whips up a tornado, which may not be the smartest move on a spaceship. With a lightning strike, the Borg are taken out.

Days of Future Past. Picard takes down a Sentinel. As do Colossus and Kurt. Troi feels like something is missing. Kang, talking aloud, to himself. He reveals, to himself, his own plans, that the anomalies are keeping history together, so once the heroes fix those two pieces – history should be for Kang’s taking.

On the bridge of the Enterprise. Two officers are getting restless, as Kitty has to watch on. Just then, Wesley Crusher and the Traveler arrive.

Beverley is excited to see her son again.

Traveler explains how Kang is tricking them into doing his bidding. The anomalies need to stay in place, as time fixes itself.

I do like the idea of Wesley and Kitty being a pair. Traveler is going to guide the Enterprise to where Kang is. Mr. Crusher and Ms. Pryde are going to warn the teams.

As the two youngsters leave, Banshee and Angel reflect on how Kitty has grown up.

Battle of Wolf 359. Sisko is giving orders to Thunderbird, so we know he is the anomaly. Now we just need Sunfire and all of the Second Class folks would be present. Well, and Cyclops too, I suppose.

Wolverine is about to kill Thunderbird (as he’s better than Count Nefaria, I guess). Luckily, Kitty arrives and hugs Wolverine. Wesley is forced to yell at Data to not do anything that Kang told them to do. Storm wants an explanation, I would have just taken Kitty at her word. I’m good like that.

Just then, Sisko is about to be killed when Proudstar takes the hit – like a champ.

Data suspects that Kang wanted Sisko to die so that he never becomes the Emissary of the Prophets. Wesley tells them to use their watches to go back to the Enterprise. Kitty and him need to catch up to the other team. Worf respects how brave Kitty is.

Kang breaks a monitor, as the Enterprise attacks. Kang isn’t gong to go down quietly.

Days of Future Past. We get to see Tasha Yar filling in for Rachel Grey, as Kate Pryde sleeps. Well, as she’s back in the 80s and it is really Kitty’s mind that is taking the nap.

Kurt is able to work in the phase “Days of Future Past” which can’t be easy to do.

Troi confirms this isn’t their Tasha Yar.

Picard can’t bring himself to kill Yar. Wesley and Kitty arrive to stop what Picard has already decided to not do.

Borg inspired Sentinels break through the walls.

I don’t quite get how Tasha Yar was able to send Kate’s mind back to the past, that isn’t part of her skill set. She was a kick arse Security Chief.

Troi volunteers to replace Yar and get the two Prydes minds back to their rightful bodies.

Colossus and Kitty are taking out SentiBorgs.

Wait, did Colossus fastball special Kitty? He’s been doing that since before Whedon did it, that’s pretty awesome.

Kitty destroys a head of a SentiBorg and lands. She sees Troi syncing Yar and Kate’s minds.

Kitty, for the first time, witnesses the event that has been a pretty pivotal moment in her history. One of the first real defining stories of hers.

Wait, am I reading Troi’s dialogue correctly? Kate’s mind is going back to Tasha Yar’s younger mind? Shouldn’t this have been Rachel doing this to a sleeping Yar? That would have make more sense.

Riker, Banshee and the Traveler are on Kang’s ship. As soon as Traveler is finished tampering with Kang’s ship, the come back to the bridge. Picard and the gang are waiting for him.

The two ships begin a fire fight. The Enterprise ends the duel with a win.

Captain’s Log, Kang’s ship imploded onto itself. Kitty kisses Wesley on the cheek! If only we could get a tad more of that relationship. The two teams say their good byes.

The X-Men return to Earth and one second later, are beginning the adventure of Planet X, which we’ll be reviewing in a few days.

This has been a very fun story

This was during the great time, at Marvel, when they were doing gatefold covers, with a very informative inside cover. Unfortunately, for Excalibur, this is also the time that Ben Raab was given the editorial mandate to break up Pryde and Wisdom and slowly bring Excalibur to an end.

Inside gatefold cover ad is for the new TNBC lineup – Saved by the Bell : the New Class / Hang Time / City Guys / NBA Inside Stuff. I was still watching these first three shows. I still wish Megan Parlen still acted. Whenever I see Anthony Anderson, which is pretty regularly, I think of Hang Time.

The cast of the title is – Nightcrawler / Shadowcat / Colossus / Wolfsbane / Meggan and Pete Wisdom.

What happened previously – Colossus and Meggan were traveling back to Muir Island, when a bomb went off in their plane. Now they are stranded in the Swiss Alps. Colossus, while carrying Meggan, has lead them to Wundagore, and unless you are going to see Bova, the sweet cow lady – it is never a good idea to go to where the High Evolutionary lives.

Meanwhile, Kurt and Wisdom are in Kassel, Germany – looking for Wisdom’s old Black Air friend, Peckman. She finds them, before they find her and ambushes them.

Rahne hugs Moira goodbye, as she is heading towards New Mutants : Truth or Dare reunion miniseries. So great that they are making a point of writing Rahne out of the title, for an issue. For some reason, Rahne is going to Westchester, on a boat. I guess if Colossus took one plane and Kurt & Wisdom took another, they don’t have a third plane but that still seems weird. Moira is worried about Bastion, as this is during the Operation : Zero Tolerance era. The two ladies are sad, as Moira is dying and her time is limited (though we know, now, that she has a couple more years) but Rahne only sees her former teammates, on rare occasions.

Before her boat can ship, Douglock comes running along, to give her her diary. They kiss goodbye, which surprises the both of them. Odd that Douglock isn’t coming along for the reunion – as he counts for two New Mutant members. Was there ever a follow up story with Rahne and Warlock, about their brief romance during this era? I don’t recall that.

Wundagore. Colossus and Meggan are awakened by Bova. Bova warns that a war is coming and Colossus recognizes the name. Bova, shyly, brings up that she is a friend of the Avengers. Sir Ram gives Bova grief for bringing new faces to the tower. Sir Ram recognizes Colossus and instantly wants to murder him! Colossus armors up and this surprises Sir Ram, so I’m not sure who he thought Colossus was. Colossus recognizes the name, Wundagore, but not sure from where. That guy is the worst.

Sir Ram knows Colossus from his Acolyte days. By days, I mean, literally days, I don’t think he was a member for that long. Exodus is running that crew now and he may be at war with the High Evolutionary.

Sir Ram disrespects Meggan by calling her “a little minx” and she tosses him up in the air and he gets stuck on one of the ledges.

Kassel, Germany. Wisdom is chained to a column. Peckman has not only tied him up, but placed a neural inhibitor on the back of his neck – so he can’t melt the chains. Kurt is nowhere to be seen. There is a splinter group of rogue Black Air that she is a member of.

Wundagore. Lord Gator and Grizzly Lady Ursula, are leading the troops, as they prepare for battle with Exodus. Gator doesn’t trust Colossus but he tries to prove his worth with how Exodus’ battle strategy would be. I can never spell “strategy” right, the first time. Just then, a voice silences Colossus.

Back at Muir Island. Douglock and Moira are talking about how Lockheed is missing and how Kitty is looking for him. He’s been missing for eleven issues, or almost a year – our time. Lockheed, who is being drawn like a Disney character.

Poor Lockheed is being hunted and taunted. Lockheed is confused, as he thought these peeps were his friends – which makes them laugh. As we won’t be revisiting this, for some time, these are evil Bamfs that will be coming to their own storyline, soon.

In the air, towards New York. Rahne is glad to be seeing Cannonball, Sunspot, Karma and Dani again. She wishes Illyana could be there, but she’s dead now, as is Doug. Another odd reason for not including Douglock. Maybe Raab didn’t want to lose two characters for a few issues. Not like Douglock is doing anything at the moment. Rahne enjoyed that kiss with Douglock.

Wundagore. High Evolutionary has two items that Exodus wants – the tower and Magneto’s granddaughter, Quicksilver and Crystal’s daughter, Luna. Apparently, Crystal is dead and Quicksilver is having High Evolutionary watch over Luna, as he mourns Crystal. Which is insane to me! I’m sure Luna is mourning her too and probably wants and needs her father at a time like this. That Quicksilver is a douche bag! At this time, I was really enjoying Quicksilver’s solo title but I must not have had this thought, back in the day.

High Evolutionary last saw Colossus during the Evolutionary War, way back in Uncanny X-Men Annual 12. Which came out in 1988, which was then nine years ago.

High Evolutionary doesn’t need Colossus and tells the two of them to leave.

Bullpen Bulletins. X-Force 70 starts their “on the road again” storyline. Men in Black came out. Spectacular Spider-Man 250 is coming out, with the Green Goblin! Stan Lee answers a few questions – his thoughts on Heroes Reborn, any regrets not writing novels and any news about the X-Men film which is still three years away.

I don’t own any of these but I know I read Deadpool, Spectacular Spider-Man and the Captain America title. The Heroes Reborn titles did a silly crossover for their 13th (and final) issues as Lee / Liefeld’s contracts were only good for twelve issues / one year. I also read X-Force and maybe the Wolverine issue.

High Evolutionary teleports (with a wave of his hand) Colossus and Meggan to Paris (as the Eiffel Tower is in the background). This sets up the Colossus One Shot, that guest stars Meggan. Not sure why they didn’t bill it as “Excalibur : Colossus & Meggan” they would have in today’s marketplace.

Look at Lockheed, maybe his second cover of this spotlight month? It is, as he is on the back cover of issue 100. Not too bad.

This is the Post-Onslaught issue. The news reports that – The Fantastic Four, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and other members of the Avengers (those poor no-namers!) – are all presumed dead. The news makes a big point of stating that the X-Men have been untouched. ooof! That is going to play well to the flatscans’ fears!

Kurt can’t believe that these heroes are gone and Moira repeats, that the world needs Excalibur, more than ever now.

The Chalk & Cheese. Pryde and Wisdom’s favorite place to go. Wisdom can’t believe that the Prime Minister is going back to only giving Excalibur “some credit” to the events of issue 100. Now that the world may be angry at mutants, he doesn’t want to come off pro-mutant. Or “pro-racism” as I like to think of it. The Labour Leader, on the other hand, is all for Excalibur – which is nice. Kitty isn’t quite a fan of being a political football.

Kitty isn’t comfortable with having the likes of Cyclops and Wolverine being outlaws and her being beloved by the press. Wisdom (I imagine speaking for Ellis, who I read is a lot like him – sort of like John Constantine – who Wisdom is the Marvel counterpart of) goes off about how Cable’s gun is the size of him and that comes off pretty scary. Wisdom goes on to repeat one of the more famous lines about the X-Men – one always knows where they have been, as they leave a trail of destruction, in their wake.

Pryde tries to make the conversation have a lighter tone by pointing out how horrible Wisdom eats, like a man who never knows when his next meal will be or if he will have one.

Muir Island Station. Brian is telling Meggan of a time where he fought beside Captain America. As if Meggan doesn’t recall Excalibur 59 & 60! But Brian’s tale is from before those issues. Brian talks about how America loved Captain America more so than how Britain loved him, as Captain Britain. This doesn’t hurt Brian, as the two countries are vastly different, especially with how they treat their heroes. Meggan hopes that works in the other direction. That Britain will not hate mutants, as much as Americans do. Meggan changes the topic and wants to set a date for their wedding. Which is now, t-minus 23 issues – not like the characters know that.

There is an ad for the film “Alaska” which sounds up my ally. “A missing father. A desperate search. An unforgettable adventure.” A very young Thora Birch (I assume) is in it, as is Charlton Heston! Unfortunately, it isn’t on Netflix. shoot!

On Muir Island. Moira has agreed to release her prisoner to Alistaire. The agency he is now the director of, is called “The Department” – I’m disappointed by the lack of a better title. That mutant is Spoor, and he is very loud. Rory should have stayed away from that fella! He would have had his leg still!

A German Countryside. Amanda has teleported herself, Colossus and Wolfsbane. Amanda is searching for her mother, Margali, and suspects that she returned home. Amanda is going to go inside the house but Wolfsbane takes the lead, as Kurt wants Amanda to stay safe. Once Wolfsbane gets to the door, a siren goes off.

Back at the bar, Wisdom and Pryde are about to leave. As they head outside, they are confronted by four goons. This is such a great scene, as the couple has some real fun banter between each other as they don’t take the threat seriously – as they shouldn’t. Wisdom whispers that Pryde shouldn’t kill any of them. They beat the fools, quick and easy! Wisdom tells Pryde to watch out, as a guy comes from behind her. She is fully aware of that guy, as she’s more of a professional than he is! The two just haven’t worked together, that much.

Pryde goes as far as to say that these fools are a mere workout, and Wisdom only likes to see her get sweaty. She wouldn’t mind some applause and general worshiping. I do like how neither of them needed their powers.

Making this comic hard to read, is two trading cards, one of Reed Richards, drawn by Jim Lee. The other is an Overpower playing card.

The two go to the remaining still conscious guy, for some answers. He is with the American government, he has a message that they are no longer welcome in America. The two head back to Muir Island, they gag him and pretend he is the last prisoner that Alistaire needs. Moira goes along with it, claiming his name is Crimson Goatgouger.

Bullpen Bulletins. Ghost Rider is getting a new costume. Adam Kubert gets a spotlight. There is an Avengers : The Legend, one shot coming out – celebrating 30 years of their history. Not sure why Fantastic Four didn’t get this type of memorial issue.

Wisdom claims his power is that he controls people with this voice and he breaths through his fingers. Kitty leaves a note for Alistaire, to let the guy loose, after a bit. Pryde and Wisdom start cracking up, once the plane departs.

What is Colossus doing, putting on his gauntlets while everyone else is relaxing?

Casey likes to draw Lockheed as if he is the size of a dog! I wish we got more scenes of Moira and Kitty together, I feel like they barely talk to each other.

Moira reveals that X-Factor’s current mission is to bring in Xavier. Everyone gets sad, but team morale booster – Pete Wisdom – gets everyone out of the dumps and they head off to a pub, as the issue ends.

The previous issues, Deadpool has helped Loki lead a battle to Asgard. After conquering that realm, they came to Earth, which upsets Thor and all of the combined heroes.

I tried reading, Sun Tzu’s Art of War, but I just couldn’t get into it. Deadpool’s writing of the book, reveals to me that I’m still not ready to read it. Deadpool is having to rewrite the book, as he apparently killed Sun Tzu, in the past.

Onto the issue. Loki has brought some Orges to New York City and Loki, himself, is standing on a walking giant Whale. All the whale needs is a pair of overalls and it could have been Blow-Hole from The Tick.

Deadpool’s Art of War – Chapter 10 : There are six problems that can arise for an army that extend from poor leadership. Flight, Insubordination, Collapse, Ruin, Disorganization, Rout.

The gathered heroes, including Magik (making her sole appearance, this issue), Cyclops, and Tempus, of the New Xavier School. From the Jean Grey Schook, Warren and Storm are representing. Invisible Woman, back when the Fantastic Four were wearing red and black costumes. It isn’t a bad look, but I didn’t recognize her until I saw Reed Richards in the same color scheme.

Deadpool’s Art of War : There are six kinds of grounds to worry about : accessible, entangling,, narrow passes, temporizing, precipitous heights and great distance from the battle.

Deadpool is fighting Captain America, who is trying to calm Deadpool down. Deadpool is having to deal with making Loki all powerful and coming to Earth. Spider-Man successfully knocks Deadpool out.

Thor is leading the heroes of Asgard against Loki’s army.

Deadpool’s Art of War, Chapter Eleven : There are nine varieties of ground : Dispersive, Facile, Contentious, Open, Intersecting Highways, Serious, Difficult, Hemmed-in, and Desperate.

Deadpool is back in the fight but isn’t doing so well.

There is an ad for Black Vortex, I can’t recommend it enough.

Deadpool’s Art of War, Chapter Twelve : There are five ways to attack with fire – Burn soldiers in their camp / burn their stores / burn their baggage / burn their weaponry / drop fire among them

Deadpool writers this as Human Torch is fighting off some ogres but is taken out. Namor saves him before he can hit the ground.

Deadpool’s Art of War, Chapter Thirteen : Raising a hundred thousand men for battle can be a drain.

Reed, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Thing, Hulk, Iron Man, Storm, Beast, Jean Grey, Scott Summers and Wolverine are fighting a horde.

Thor and Loki are fighting, Thor goes down a moment. Deadpool, with swords, comes at Loki. Thor gets back up, grabs Mjolnir and strikes down lightning onto Loki – taking him out of the fight, for good.

Later, Deadpool is trying to sell his book. The first publisher laughs him out of her office. He takes it to Marvel and editor, Jordan D. White (who likes to put himself into comics, as he is in Deadpool Volume Three Issue 45 / 250). White recommends they get Peter David to write it, which he will later do.

How great is it that 24 years later, we are getting an Infinity Gauntlet tie-in!?! So great!

You can tell that we are about to begin a twenty page awesome story with just that title page above! I’m surprised the entire thing isn’t on the Internet yet (as oppose to other stories being fully available, maybe it is the length of it?)

“The writers chose to write bizarre versions of current characters and to include characters that had never been seen before. . . . wait 24 years” so great.

Then. Deadpool has just successfully stolen something. Inferno is coming, Spider-Man is a clone, Phoenix is dead – pretty much tells us where we are in the world of Marvel. Gosh, from 1991 to 2015, so much has happened!

Deadpool’s client is . . . Thanos, in his legendary Thanos-copter (of course). Thanos had Deadpool steal him a cosmic cube. Turns out, Deadpool didn’t give Thanos the real cube, he used it to snatch the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos.

What does Deadpool do with the most powerful item in the universe? One Night One : Deadpool Roasts the Marvel Universe. This will be my second most favorite Marvel Roast. Deadpool does this so that he can get back at everybody that has kept him down. A lady mistakes him for Spider-Man, so he erases her from continuity. Before he can start, Howard the Duck arrives. Howard changes the marquee, as it is in his rider to – Deadpool Roasts the Marvel Universe Special, Guest MC : Howard the Duck.

Deadpool’s dais consists of – Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor and Nick Fury.

I own this entire $9.99 comic due to the one panel that Magik appears in above! Emma gets a line later in the comic and Illyana isn’t even in that panel!

Like any good roast, there is a common easy joke that everyone can make, in Deadpool’s case, it is his face. His face is pretty tore back, due to his cancer, which is pretty messed up to make fun of him for it.

Howard makes a great joke about how everyone only likes Deadpool when he graces their comic cover, as that is a boost to their sales.

There is a great panel of how the blind characters got horrible seats. There is Stick, Shroud, Daredevil, Blindfold, her mother, Destiny, Madame Web, Echo and Blind Al. I thought Echo was deaf and not blind.

The first roaster is Wolverine, wearing a Goblin Queen outfit, but he doesn’t know it. Elektra is enjoying herself. Sabretooth is not happy that he is trying to be the new Wolverine.

Storm is up next, she is surprised to see that Hitler is in attendance. Magneto isn’t happy to discovery that Hitler is sitting at the table behind his. Hitler gleefully says that he was the star of issue 26, the issue prior to Deadpool and Shiklah’s wedding.

Deadpool starts to grow tired of Howard’s antics and makes a reference to Howard’s after credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Emma is tired of this silly business. I wish Magik got to be appear in that panel! Poor Phoebe, she still can’t get colorist to color her hair red, outside of Uncanny and All New.

Cable is up next and he is extremely tired of being paired with Deadpool. There is a second theme of the roast, that people are just plain tired of Deadpool.

Thor states that no one likes Deadpool, god or mortal. Deadpool’s face looks like Heidrun the Goat’s backside, which looks like Mangog’s backside. Magog does not appreciate that and makes fun of Thor via a Thunderstrike reference.

Spider-Man gets on the mic and bombs. He references seeing Gwen’s dead and her father, George Stacey’s death. He discusses the Venom symbiote, Agent Venom states that Spider-Man likes it. Spider-Man tries to fake that Doctor Octopus has controlled again. Doctor Octopus chimes in, that he is the superior joke teller.

Daredevil jokes that he has heard back things. Howard the Duck makes fun of the lame joke and Blind Al swears at him, again.

Kim, who has had forced surgery to look like a purple Nightcrawler (I reviewed an issue he was appeared in issue 38 of Volume Three). He compliments Deadpool, so Howard pushes him off the stage. Kurt, the real Nightcrawler, takes the stage and claims that being dead is funnier than listening to Deadpool.

Agent Adsit takes the stage. He chooses to not make any jokes about Deadpool’s face – instead, going after Little Deadpool. He describes it as being a hot dog that has been microwaved too long. Shiklah laughs so hard, as it is so true.

Michael the Necromancer states that he is no hero but neither is Deadpool, which isn’t the most untruthful thing to say.

Hulk is next. He starts strong, with stating that he is the strongest there is. Except in stink, Deadpool wins that. When the jokes don’t go over well, he smashes his way out of the room.

Nick Fury Jr. is next but he doesn’t know what to say, so his father steps in. Proper Nick (not the old guy from Original Sin, so this must be a LMD) states that Deadpool is the worst guy in the universe. Which, funny enough, insults Hitler.

Captain America (but also not old) states that he doesn’t get a lot of Deadpool’s jokes but ends with a cheesy joke about how Deadpool and Red Skull must share a dermatologist.

Doctor Strange says that Deadpool covers his pain with jokes and wishes that no one had to be present for this.

A giant lizard dude shows up but isn’t name checked, I was hoping he would be. Deadpool and Thor tore him a new one and now he shits in a bag, which he offers to show people. I wish we got the name and the issue number that happened in.

The Ghost of Benjamin Franklin gets a turn. He comments on how horrible Deadpool’s face is that people are ignoring the fact that he is a horrible friend and pretty shallow.

Shiklah (I can’t seem to remember how to spell her name) takes the microphone. She agrees that his face isn’t great, vampires even feel bad for him but he is the hottest man she has ever met. They have a rule, no matter how much they battle, their love making is that much more intense.

Agent Preston gets her turn, her son – Jeff – wrote the jokes. The jokes are all poop jokes but funny poop jokes. “Your face looks like a doody took a doody on it. Your face looks like a sewer farted on it. Your face caught on fire and someone tried to put it out with poop. You face looks like a wizard made a poop sword and a young knight pulled it out of a poop stone and stabbed your face with it.” Deadpool is very proud.

Deadpool finally gets to defend himself. He gets a swipe at Alpha Flight. Because he is wearing the Infinity Gauntlet, his jokes are super funny to those who hear them and everyone starts laughing. He starts taking shots at the guests. Man Thing’s table is giant size. Deadpool has never killed anyone in a wheelchair, unlike Cyclops. Though Xavier wasn’t in a wheelchair at that time. Deadpool says that once Domino is done with her guest panel, she will go back to obscurity. Nightcrawler isn’t able to teleport away, as people start noticing something is wrong.

Deadpool was making people laugh as nothing matter, as he thinks about his origins retold in five panels (the lights of the Infinity Gems). Due to him wearing the Infinity Gauntlet, he can see us, the reader. Deadpool is depress as he knows he isn’t real and his torments are due to us needing to be entertain. Howard the Duck knows who Deadpool is talking too, as Howard the Duck was breaking the fourth wall decades before Deadpool came out of Rob Liefeld’s pen.

Issue ends with Thanos, still in the Thanos-copter. Deadpool gives Thanos the Infinity Gauntlet and is kicked out of the copter.

Thanks to the Recap page, we learn that Deadpool has a daughter, Ellie, and Agent Preston has been raising her.

U.L.T.I.M.A.T.I.U.M. is going after Deadpool’s friends and family but they are being killed as they make their attempts. Agent Adsit is shot though. Flag Smasher suspects Deadpool is going to go the traditional route of over reacting and barge at them with the full fury of an animated wounded animal. Instead. Deadpool has a plan that pretty much goes as he planned it. Deadpool has everything finalized, including buying a farm in Kansas and he invites U.L.T.I.M.A.T.I.U.M. to attack him. Deadpool starts killing everyone of these foolish fools. He makes a AXIS reference by referring to his Zenpool identity. Deadpool saves Flag Smasher for last. Wade Wilson kills Deadpool, so that he can keep his friends safe and that he can spend time with his wife and child.

Six Days Later. Everyone is on a stolen yacht. Agent Adsit is in a wheelchair, so he lives.

The final Incursion between the Proper Marvel Earth and the Ultimate Earth. Wade thought all of this Incursion silliness was Avengers nonsense, which I thought so as well. Wade hugs his daughter one last time.

The main story ends with the Death of Deadpool but also, of everyone else as the Incursion of the Proper Marvel Earth and the Ultimate Earth begins.

Whenever I see this cover in my cover collection on comicbookdb.com, I see it as Doctor Doom v Reed Richards, but it is Reed v Ronan the Accuser.

It is pretty maddening how difficult this series is to Google!

I own this for the two Kitty appearances!

Okay, I will try to recap the Previous On as Hickman had a bunch going on and I only read this issue and issue 600 and most of it just went over my head as I’m pretty sure I just read the two pages Kitty Pryde was on and moved on.

So apparently there are a bunch of Reed Richards who came together to make the universes better. They want to bring on something called, The War of the Four Cities. The Inhumans captured two of the last four of them. Ronan the Accuser is the ruler of the Kree Empire. Thing, who is an Avenger, has brought his new pals and various other heroes together.

Onto the issue. Baxter Building. oh, and the title is FF because with Human Torch believed dead, they changed their name and uniforms (to white) and now they are Future Foundation. Part of the FF goals is that they are running a school. Franklin and Leech are students of the school. Everyone had a school during 2011.

Franklin and Leech are using walkie talkies. Their codenames are Hyperstorm and Kid Incredible. I wonder if Franklin going by his possible son’s codename worried anyone.

There is an ad for Spider-Man Edge of Time, which I still haven’t played. If they went with Noir instead of 2099, I would probably have bought it. They even brought over the 2099 free fall levels which I hated in the Shattered Dimension game.

Other students are Alex Powers, of Power Pack, Dragon Man (who isn’t a simpleton), Valeria Richards and three Morloids.

There is an ad for the video game, X-Men Destiny, which I heard had an item with Shadowcat’s name in it but that wasn’t enough for me to buy it. Pretty cool that Mike Carey wrote the story for it. I meant to buy it when it became a twenty dollar game but by then, my precious PS3 had Yellow Light of Death (YLoD).

The students are building something. Reed passes by, takes a glance and enters the room. Reed talks to his daughter and Val tells him that they expanded the teleportion capabilities to cover three floors instead of the one. Val is concerned as the Baxter Building isn’t just the home of the Fantastic Four anymore, they have a school there, people work in the rest of the building, protective measures need to be taken.

Attilan. Diablo (with a narly face burn) and Thinker are the prisoners of Ronan and the Inhumans. Ronan is married to Crystal, so he’s husband number two for her. Good for her, now she is the Queen of the Kree Empire. Or whatever female title one has for what Ronan is. Ronan has plans for the two Reed Richards that they have prisoner.

The Other Side of Zero. The Cult of the Negative Zone. This bald guy with a minus symbol on his forehead, is contacting Annihilus. The guy informs him that they are succeeding in moving amplifying devices, called Obelisks, that expands the bridge between Earth and the Negative Zone. They are trying to get access to the biggest portal on Earth, which is in the Baxter Building.

The Baxter Building. Reed is about to start a speech but takes the time to apologize for his ignorance, he thought he could handle the situation by himself, he should have reached out once the situation got as big as it did.

Nice of Reed to call the gathered heroes the best group of heroes the world has to offer.

She-Hulk takes a moment to chat with Susan about Thing being back with the team. Thing is happy to hear Susan take responsibility for running him off the team in the first place. Susan then tells Jenn that it would be nice for Ben to clean the dishes from time to time. Grimm shouts that he clean the dishes out last night. Sue kisses him on the check, she is glad he is home again.

Spider-Man asks them to be quiet, Reed just explained how everyone is going to be killed. Captain America compliments Reed for a good speech.

The Forever Cit. Protectorate of Attilian. Ronan’s big plan for two Reeds is to combine them into the Supreme Intelligence, so that guy is alive again. He wants to know where his armies are.

The Baxter Building. Shadowcat gives Wolverine a look of comfort.

The final page is the entire Kree Spacefleet in the skies of Earth, so it is very much on.

This issue leads directly into Fantastic Four 600. Which we will review in a couple days.

Sadly, on April 23, 2015 – we lost artist Francis Tsai. I only own this issue of his, that he did the cover, and his art work is used in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Update 1, that I plan on reviewing next year. So great that he got to draw Magik on the cover, that has most members of Exiles, up to that point. Sadly, Magik nor Cat (who is next to Sabretooth, but I thought that was Psylocke) don’t appear in this issue.

Chapter One : A World Without Heroes

In a dimension where Hulk left his Planet Hulk storyline and took charge of the Annihilation Wave, he brought it Earth. Most heroes died, trying to stop the Hulk. Of course, the only hero left is Wolverine.

I should mention that, none of the Exiles appear until the end – this issue is more setting up a concept of the Exiles, as a revolving team.

Two months later, on the same Earth, we check in with what is left of the Xavier Institute. Quentin Quire (without the pink hair, he is a brunette) is with his girlfriend, Sophie. Sophie has the power, now, to see glimpses of the future – but only in her dream. She dreamed that a team known as, The Exiles, will come to save them. We see who else makes up the refugee heroes – Patriot, Speedball, Mindee & Esme, Julie Powers of Power Pack and Wiccan. Quentin plans on jumping into the time stream and finding this team of ragtag heroes.

Chapter Two : A Quentin in Time

Quentin Quire lands on a Earth and instantly meets his fellow Rioters – Blob, himself and Beak, on this Earth. They are all drugged out on Kick. Quentin takes them down with the help of Nighthawk, who was only a boy from issue 45 of Exiles. Which I do own but I don’t want to review at this issue, as I don’t want to go down too many rabbit holes in these reviews.

I’ve since read Exiles 100 and there isn’t really much of a tie-in where this issue falls into it.

Nighthawk recalls the adventure from issue 45. This Earth put up a statue of the Exiles.

Chapter Three : Legacy

The Tallus, that Nighthawk gave to Quentin, tells him to place flowers along a memorial of names. This is the Earth that Spider-Woman (Mary Jane) who was a member of the Exiles. First seen in Exiles 20, which I also own. Turns out,this Mary Jane died in Spider-Verse 1. Mary Jane talks about her former lover, Sunfire. Luke Cage, who has the powers of Iron Fist, also tells the story.

There are some ads, that helps remind me of the era. Spider-Man 3 was coming out and Ultimate Secrets, an Ultimate Handbook, came out in January 2008. I own it.

Chapter Four : World Tour

Quentin meets Jennifer Swenson, Spitfire. She wants to destroy the armor that her father makes, like an Iron Man version of the Sentinels. Apparently, this is from New Universe, seen during Exiles 72 & 73 (I don’t own these) – if I’m reading Marvel Database correctly. Quentin tries to convince Jennifer to use the armor for good, she doesn’t want to be a hero. The military shows up and tries to kill them. She flies away with Quentin, and decides that being a hero isn’t all that bad.

Chapter Five : The Lost Son

On the Age of Apocalypse Earth, Quentin meets Wild Child (think a smaller leaner Sabretooth).

Chapter Six : Meet the Exiles

In the Crystal Palace, the Time Broker (the fake face of the bugs who actually operate the palace) greets Quentin Quire. Quentin wants the Exiles, and the Time Broker tells him that he has already met them. If Quentin agrees to join the team, their first Earth to save will be his original one. He super agrees and disappears.

Chapter Seven : Home

The New Exiles show up, they fight off some giant green bugs.

Chapter Eight : Moving On

Blink and Sabretooth are observing this new team. Blink isn’t sure if this was enough. The heroes that they put on the Planet Hulk Annihilation had died, so the replacement heroes are not going to be running into duplicates.

The issue ends with a fun reveal that Blink’s Time Broker (who looks like an overweight butler) wasn’t the same as Sabretooth’s when he was part of Weapon X (which is a lousy evil opposite of the Exiles). their time broker looked like a sexy blond secretary.

Deadpool Volume Three Issue 27

Let’s take a closer look at Scott Koblish & Val Staples’ Guinness World Record holding, most characters on a single issue cover, 236 known characters.

The very first thing I notice is Kitty and Lockheed are standing apart from the X-Men. Next, that Human Torch is setting Lockheed up for a prank on Thing.

Odd how Rachel and Magik are nowhere near Kitty, but then Colossus is next to his sister – explaining that.

Next to Rachel, are four of the Original X-Men as Angel is flying high.

I like that Cable is the best man.

Black Panther is staring at Storm.

Beast and Wonder Man are next to each other. Probably due to no one else wanting to stand next to them.

Leech and Artie are the ring bearers.

Kurt is marrying them.

Superior Spider-Man’s backpack is holding his spider-legs.

Reed and Sue are hugging. Captain Britain and Meggan are also hugging.

The Pet Avengers have assembled!

Hulk and Impossible Man are mean eyeing each other.

I like how the Asgardians get their own row.

As part of Deadpool’s wedding party – Luke Cage, Wolverine and Captain America.

The Bride’s bridesmaids are – She-Hulk, Wasp, Domino, Siryn, Lady Deadpool and Squirrel Girl.

Hopefully Marvel gets it together to make a shirt out of this.

Also, the cover implies that this is the most important issue number 27 in the history of comics! With a quick scan of my collection, I own these other issue 27s :

Excalibur, Exiles, Generation X, Ultimate Comics X-Men, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Uncanny X-Force Volume One, Wolverine and the X-Men, X-Treme X-Men and Deadpool Volume One – that has Kitty, Wolverine and Doctor Bong.

This is a run I’ve been wanting to try for a while as I am a big Brian Posehn fan. I met him once at the San Diego Comic Con. He was just minding his own business and I recognized him (how could you not?) and just walked over, told him how much I really like his comedy performances. He said thanks and I left him alone after that. I met him right before I saw Lou Ferringo, Lou wasn’t happy that all I wanted to do was shake his hand.

I have been reading great reviews for this comic for a while now and I’m glad this wedding issue happened so I can see what was going on.

Issue opens with Deadpool, SHIELD Agents Emily Preston (now in a new robot body) and Scott Adsit as they are fighting agents of ULTIMATUM. I really like the character of Preston, seems like a lot of fun.

Deadpoool is explaining to them, while they are all in a middle of a shoot out, that he is having a ceremony later. He and his wife, Shiklah, are already technically married, the ceremony is just for friends and family.

All of a sudden, we hear a voice from a distance, one of the ULTIMATUM agents were not killed. Deadpool and Preston look at each other, as they know they killed their opponents. Adsit has to admit that he may have only winged the guy.

The three head outside, another ULTIMATUM agent comes running out of a van, Death to Deadpool, then we (or at least I) finally see who Shiklah is. She is a giant demon lady! Don’t worry, she has a weaker form, that of a lovely lady.

Shiklah and Preston get along like old friends.

Shiklah shows the agents where she lives, Monster Metropolis.

Deadpool reveals that Shiklah has a fued with vampires.

Adsit asks who will be actually marrying them. Deadpool slaps his own forehead. He hadn’t thought of that yet. Doctor Stange turns down the offer. Captain America also says no, and is insulted that he wasn’t asked first. Wolverine turns him down, but Nightcrawler states that he will marry them. Good thing he is alive again.

I like how comfortable Deadpool is to be seen without his mask on.

Blind Al gets sent to the wrong address.

At the outdoor wedding. Bob the Agent is there. So is Cyclops and Squirrel Girl.

It starts to rain, good thing Thor is there to stop it.

They kiss as they are married, and I like that Shiklah dips Deadpool. Also, that Kitty Pryde was in attendance. At least, if I see a brunette with a ponytail, I figure that gal is Kitty.

Kitty is also at the reception, which is a real party – she is sitting at a table with Iceman. Hulk and Colossus are staring each other down. Northstar and Kyle are dancing. As is Kurt and Storm.

The newlyweds come in to cheers. They dance and this story ends with another kiss.

Actually it ends with ULTIMATUM planning their next move against Deadpool.

Issue starts wih Ulik and a troll trying to get to the surface. Ulik gets to the subway tunnel and gets smack by a subway.

Koblush is a very expressive artist.

He shows Kitty is a wide range of motions. We join her pleading Logan for something. Koblish shows Kitty pleading in the exact same pose for five panels, and it is fun everytime.

She tries at breakfast, while he is washing the dishes, brushing his teeth, while he is working with Colossus and Nightcrawler on the Bkackbird, then finally while he and Kurt are playing some PS3.

Kurt finally asks what she wants, Logan admits he cannot remember. Kitty really wants to meet Thor. She wants to do this, as the girls at her dance class are real jerks. She never had classmates at Stevie Hunter’s dance studio, besides Doug, in the original continuity. I really like the idea of Kitty having classmates her age, as she rarely had that interaction.

While explaining the goal to Kurt, she says Thor Heyerdahl, who Logan does know and that Thor does owe him one, as Logan helped him with building the Kon-Tiki.

At this point in Logan’s history, he has not met Thor. Present Day, he is on Uncanny Avengers with Thor, and can set up a meeting easily.

Arreola really uses a rich color palette, rich but bright. This was meant, and succeeded, as an all ages title. The colors are light and keeps the story feeling very welcoming.

Peter David, of course, can tell enduring tales that all can enjoy, and he throws little jokes into the script. Such as Whitney, the leader of the other two gals, tells them that they don’t have minds of their own, but they also should not be offended by Whitney thinking that of them.

Kitty is poolside, while Logan is swimming. She is trying to convince him to set up a meeting. She tries to trick him by saying Jean told her to ask Scott. In a great use of pacing, it is done in snappy dialogue, it is revealed that Kitty already tried Scott.

This makes Logan laugh and he agrees to do the meeting.

Thor is being presented with a medal, Logan knows, if more than one superhero is present at an event, trouble will follow.

Of course, Ulik shows up. He has a magnet that captures Mjolnir. That doesn’t hold Thor back at all.

The troll takes the giant magnet into a sewer. Wolverine enters the fight with Ulik while Kitty fights the troll.

Kitty tricks the troll into defeating himself. At one point, Mjolnir turns into a simple cane. Kitty doesn’t know this, but once a polite man asks for it back, she complies. He becomes Thor and thusly defeats Ulik by sending into the atmosphere.

Kitty goes back to the dance class to eat crow, while she is in the middle of her confession, Thor speaks up and asks her how she is doing. It is a great pay off, and it feels like when someone much cooler shows up to make things right.

Thor asks if there is a question she wants answered. She asks about his hair. He says, “mine…hair?” and you see Logan smirk. Great way to end the issue.
