Utopia Part Four of Six

Magik only shows up on the one page, but that’s all it takes for me to buy a comic.

Issue opens with Simon Trask in his robot form.  He’s cold hearted and racist.

Scott Summers — Cyclops.  Optic force blasts.  Unbeatable plans.  He’s watching the news coverage.

Graymalkin Industries Marin, CA :  Cyclops is giving out some orders.

Dani Moonstar — Mirage.  Depowered Mutant; deposed Valkyrie.  That second part is a little hint of where she is going.

Neena Thurman — Domino.  Luck-Warping Mercenary.  Mild OCD Case.  Is her name really, Neena?  It sounds familiar and surprising.

Mindee — Stepford Cuckoo.  One part f the Three-in-One Cuckoo Hivemind.  First name actually, Irma.  Which is what I like to call her.

Betsy Braddock — Psylocke.  Telepathic, telekinetic ninja.  Long Story.  She is wearing a wetsuit, and Domno wants to know why.  Betsy tells her it is because she was swimming.  We’ll get to that.

Cyclops tells Dani that she can still pull out of her portion of the plan but she’s willing to go through with it.

This is during the time when Cyclops knew about X-Force, but X-Force is a secret.  Cyclops is pulling X23 off of that team for a side mission.  He tells Domino to go to the rendezvous point to wait for Wolverine.  He is going to get pass the city’s barriers.

Dani is heading to Vegas.  Betsy has two or three days to get her goal done.  Cyclops wants her done already.  He wants Mindee to get arrested.

Alcatraz.  Dark Wolverine is fighting Bullshawkeye.  I forget that Daken has two claws on the tops of his hands (like X23) but also has one that comes out from the bottom of his wrist.  Which, once all are extracted, must keep his wrists pretty straight.  Emma forces them to stop fighting.  Today’s goal is to do as much good as possible as Norman’s personal X-Men team.  I like how having Mimic on the roster means that Norman, essentially, has all five original X-Men on the roster.

Northern Park : Simon Trask’s version of Sentinels are being called, BioSentinels.  Its all about branding.  Emma detects that the people who are now BioSentinels are dead, so the team can use excessive force.

Cyclops is taking a field team to spy on the Dark X-Men.  Pixie is worried about what happens if they are caught out there.

I do like Cloak and Dagger as team members of the X-Men, maybe one day they can join a real squad.

There is a double page ad for Ultimate Alliance 2.  I believe it is the weakest of the four games – X-Men Legends & Ultimate Alliance.  The X-Men Legends are superb games that I hope to be able to play again, especially the second one as it has New Game +, something that every RPG game should have.  Ultimate Alliance 2 suffers from being an adaption of Civil War and that just hurts the replayablility, for me.  Plus, the level cap is pretty low so the New Game + aspect isn’t as fun.

Vegas.  Dani has made it!

Northeast.  Cyclops’ field team is on top of a building that Angel owns.  He doesn’t call it spying, he calls it homework.  he has apparently told the team who they will end up fighting.

There is a page ad split in two.  The top one is for Marvel hats.  The bottom is for New Mutants 5, the return of Warlock.  That must have burn Zeb Wells a little.  Issue four got a full page and now he gets a half page.  But it is Warlock.

Does Mimic ever use his telepathic powers?  Or does he only have Jean’s telekinesis?  I’ll have to pay attention to that.  I guess with Emma on the team, they don’t need a C-Level telepath using his power.

The Dark X-Men have defeated all of the BioSentinels but they nearly destroyed that part of town.

Cyclops knows how to defeat the Dark X-Men.  They may have the superior numbers and the two god-like power levels but they fight alone.  Together, but alone.  The X-Men fight as a unified force.  That’s they advantage.  Iceman worries not about defeating the Dark X-Men but what will surely come afterwards, the Dark Avengers.  Cyclops hints that they are not the team that will deal with the Avengers.

Then we get to why I own this issue.

Uncanny X-Men 514 Magik 1

Bay of Oakland.  Oh how I wish this was setting up Magik becoming a member of the sanctioned X-Force.

Uncanny X-Men 132 Wolverine water

Wolverine bursts from the water, just like he did in Uncanny X-Men 132.  An issue I really want to own.  Next time I’m able slash allowed to buy back issues, I have to make sure that one makes the list.

Astonishing X-Men 15 Kitty water

Kitty will later do the same move in Astonishing X-Men 15.

I could be reading way too much into it but I’m sure that’s what Fraction and the Dodsons were hoping we will remember.

Just off of the Pacific Coast :  We see Pyslocke and X-Club as they are underwater.  They are coming up to one of the old Asteroid Ms that fell into the water, so many years ago.

Back cover ad is for the Honda Insight.

Dick Ayers Red Raven

I own this for the profiles on Arcade and Storm for the Kitty Pryde references.  Magik is referenced in the M’Kraan Crystal profile.

Nice that head writer / coordinator Jeff Christiansen gave himself a profile in the back.

Other big name characters in this handbook are Norman Osborn, Puck and Spider-Man 2099.  Also, Quasar if you are being generous.

Letterer VC’s Joe Sabino

ForgetMeNot gets his first cover!

Marrow narrates the issue.  We get a recap of what has been going on since last issue and what has been happening with her.  Marrow lost her powers.  She gave up her daughter, who she named Sarah, and now has a form of her powers.  She was lead to believe that how this all came about, is the reason why Fantomex is now super evil.

While Marrow is recapping her life, she is also describing what Fantomex is doing.  One day, he is killing six Balinese supermen.  The next, eight Norwegian Flott-Spies.  He is going around the international spy community and killing their agents.  Which I don’t get, I thought they had him hooked to a fantasy machine and he was at their base.

Marrow now knows that she isn’t responsible for this, so now she is full of rage, which is making her sloppy now.  She notices an intruder.  Who turns out to be . . .

X-Force V4 14 ForgetMeNot

It was’t until this page when I noticed the art wasn’t done by Haut.  I next thought it was a new colorist but the art is by Rock-He Kim.  I sort of like it.  He makes ForgetMeNot look like he is still on model but that he also looks like he could be a big time character.  Maybe that is only hopeful thinking on my part.  There is something about him, that I really dig.

ForgetMeNot states that he has a message from Hope.  Marrow describes him as a memory-blurring boy scout, which sounds like a decent description.  Hope wants some company, and she wants Marrow to be that company.

Marrow doesn’t know how to respond to someone in a coma.  Marrow touches Hope and she now has Marrow’s bone growth power.  Hope gets out of bed and starts a video on a nearby computer.  Cable made a video for Fantomex to watch.  Cable has been pointing Fantomex at the targets he has been striking.  He’s been using him to kill bad people of the world, also why X-Force hasn’t been able to defeat him.  They are not even trying.  At least, not Cable – the rest seem to be trying their best.

ForgetMeNot pushes Psylocke, who had forgotten he was in the room, toward Hope, giving her telepathic powers.  She forces the team to recall memories and feelings of family.  Also, she broadcast their location to Fantomex.  Cable doesn’t like the idea of not making the plays, Marrow throws a metal spike through his head.  He’s only a clone, though I forget why he has an unlimited amount of clones – and why only one clone is active at any given time.

The team know they are going to lose to Super-Fantomex.  ForgetMeNot tells them their is a plan, and Domino is reminded he is in the room.  They just need to weaken Fantomex.

There is a two page ad for Black Vortex, I’m so excited about this event.  Wave One – Alpha 1, Guardians 24, Legendary Star Lord 9 and All New X-Men 38.

Fantomex arrives, he looks gigantic and has even larger wings.  The team attacks.  While he is distracted, ForgetMeNot puts a teleporter on his back and they are in Doctor Nemesis’ lab.  ForgetMeNot places Hope’s hand on Fantomex’s butt and Doctor Nemesis bodyslides the threat.  It appears that Fantomex was teleported into the Sun.

The team is concern now, as nothing will kill Fantomex.  Someone tells them that, trust, is the key.  Hope is now in an Angel-like body.  Hope takes command of X-Force.  She absorbs Doctor Nemesis’ supersmartness and now wants to cure both Cable and Fantomex.

In what she believes is her final moments, Marrow wishes she was friends with Psylocke and Domino.  Psylocke fastball specials Marrow.  She slices and dices Fantomex to smithereens.  Marrow recovers, she wants to dance and makeout with her co-lady members and is willing to skip the dancing.

Fantomex is rebuilding himself, ForgetMeNot tells them to back off.  As the issue ends with a squadron of Cables running out.

Marvel Database states that ForgetMeNot joins the team with this issue, so I’m getting this until it is cancelled, which sadly will be after the next storyline.  I guess Marrow implies that, when she called him ‘the new guy,’

Wolverine and the X-Men Big City Chase

Written by Mark Rader

Illustrated by Art Mawhinney

This is a Play-a-Sound book.

Wolverine and the X-Men Big City Chase Shadowcat

It has five pages, the last having the X-Men (Kitty, Storm, Cyclops, BeaWolst and Iceman).

I bought it when Walker Dennis was still in his mother’s belly and it only took him almost sixteen months to darn near break the spine on it.  I’m sure he would have enjoyed it more, if we could have found the replacement battery but I couldn’t find a 1.5Vx3  = 4.5V, whatever that meant.

But for a board book, he enjoyed flipping the pages.

Enjoy Free Comic Book Day 2015!  Through DCBS I am getting – Secret Wars 2015, All New Avengers, Bob’s Burgers, Doctor Who and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Hastings is allowing seven free comics, per customer.

Utopia Part One of Six

Silvestri outdoing Bachalo with all of the assists!

We are kicking off Avengers Month with a mini event, Dark Avengers Uncanny X-Men Utopia!  I don’t own parts two or three, so we will be skipping those!  The only issues I own are the ones Magik appears in.

This event was the first time the X-Men had a crossover involving someone outside of their own franchise.  The Dark Avengers were essentially the concept of Thunderbolts but with A-Listers.  Which was awkward as the Thunderbolts were an actual team during this time.  The Thunderbolts haven’t been A-Listers since Hawkeye left the title years ago.  It did bounce back during New Thunderbolts but that’s the benefit of a new number one.

A nice thing about reading this six years later, is that Matt Fraction had this excellent technique of introducing characters with their own caption box that relates their name, powers and typically a one or two word description of their character.

Inside front cover is an ad for the Honda Insight, a new hybrid.  I’m sure this ad sold many cars.

Onto the issue itself.

Simon Trask, the probably last surviving Trask, is leading a march onto city hall in San Francisco.  This was during the time when the X-Men lived in San Francisco as the mansion blew up after Second Coming.  In fact, this event spins out of it.  The march is all about how Trask wants to legislate when mutants can reproduce.  This was during California Prop 8, in RL, during on if homosexuals could get married.  Trask wants this legislation because when Hope Summers was born, the city in Alaska where she was born, was burn to the ground – due to Mister Sinister and his Marauders seeking her out.

Because my wife lived in San Francisco for a few years, whenever the comic would show a different neighborhood was shown, I would show it to her to see if that’s how it really was.  All artists during this era, did a great job of capturing San Francisco.

This event is called, Utopia, so this is clearly leading up to the mutant island – Utopia.  But we don’t even know that, at this point.

San Francisco, CA; Market St.  The march has been peaceful for miles.  Which is easy to do when on either side, are only humans.  Now Trask and his group, Humanity Now!, have finally come up to some mutants.

Dr. Henry McCoy — Beast.  Agile, vaguely feline, compassionate.  Beast tries to calmly tell Trash that the humans can’t get to City Hall unless they go through the mutants.

Jean-Paul Beabier — Northstar.  Strong, fast, Canadian.  Northstar starts yelling at Trask.

Megan Gwynn — Pixie.  Like a thing unto a Pixie.  Also teleports.  Julian Keller — Hellion.  Telekinetic, anger issues.  The students are tired of all of these bigots.  Hellion has both of his hands at this point.  He’ll keep them throughout the rest of the storyline.  All of the sudden, the muttants and humans start losing their cool and start attacking each other.

The news reports start.  Some are clearly bias against the mutants.

Marin, Ca; Gray Malkin Industries.

Dark Avengers Uncanny X-Men Utopia Magik 1

See how Colossus has his hands on that blonde?  As poor Magik doesn’t have that much distinctive physical traits out of costume.  Probably why Bachalo gave her a head garb in her current look.  It use to be nigh impossible to tell her and Magma apart during their original New Mutants days.  Especially from a distance.  This is Magik’s only appearance in the issue.

Gray Malkin Industries was the X-Men headquarters ever since the Manifest Destiny branding.  I don’t believe it lasted that long.  I did like how San Francisco was so welcoming to the X-Men.

Kurt Wagner — Nightcrawler.  Teleporting elfish demon and holy man.  Kurt wonders how the X-Men are going to respond to the riots.

Hisako Ichiki — Armor.  Psionic armor.  Young yet.  Not sure what ‘young yet’ means.  Armor would like to know what happens next as well.

Scott Summers — Cyclops.  Optic force blasts.  Leader of a people.  Cyclops wants the students to call their parents and let them know that they are safe.

San Francisco, CA; City Hall.  Mayor Sadie Sinclair is reading Cyclops the riot act.  Maybe not the best choice of words.  Cyclops tells her that he isn’t the King of Mutants, he is just one leader.  He doesn’t control every mutant.

Emma Frost — The White Queen.  Psychic powerhouse, filled with secrets.  Emma is happy that the mayor just called mutants ‘you people.’

San Francisco, CA; St. Francis Hospital.  With San Francisco being constantly used, makes me wonder if they are going to a new city, at some point.  Trask is in front of cameras.  His arm is in a sling and he has a medical collar around his neck.

In other news, Norman Osborn has arrived in the city.  This is after Secret Invasion, where he killed the Skrull Queen and is now a word famous savior.  He changed SHIELD to HAMMER but never revealed what HAMMER stood for.  He thought there would be time.  I’m not even sure if fans ever came up with a solution.  Norman is also Iron Patriot, the leader of the Dark Avengers.  Becoming the head of SHIELD, meant that he had access to all of Tony Stark’s armors as Tony was the Director of SHIELD and had supplied SHIELD with his armors – or something like that.  As seen on the cover, Norman had the awesome idea of giving an Iron Man suit a color scheme change.  Doing so, means that it looks like Norman is the perfect combination of Iron Man and Captain America, which is pretty smart.

Scott and Emma are holding hands as the mayor and them are watching Norman on television.

Wakanda.  Storm is watching the news as Black Panther is lying in a hospital bed.  Not sure what that is about.

New York City.  The New Avengers (the good guy team that are in hiding) are watching the news.  These Avengers are – Mockingbird, Iron Fist, Spider-Man, Carol Danvers, Bucky Cap, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, Ronin (Hawkeye) and Wolverine.  Wolverine is heading out to California.

Transimensional Warp Vessel Quadra Orbiting Sol-909: Franklin is sad as he is a mutant and his people are being persecuted.  You can tell this is a big event as we are checking in on the rest of the Marvel characters.

Latveria.  Doom provides the copy for the trade, which I’m sure they didn’t use – Well then, here’s to things finally getting interesting.  Loki is there, as well.  I believe they are the Cabal at this time, which Norman is also apart of.

San Francisco, CA; the Castro.  Mutant protests are happening.  Humans start throwing trash at them.  Angel shows up and tries to calm things with Match.  Riots are breaking out everywhere.

Nob Hill : Kurt is on scene

Telegraph Hill : Mercury and two otehrs are there.  The girl with pink tattoos and the guy who isn’t Rockslide.

Hayes Valley : Rockslide and Surge along with Piotr Rasputin — Colossus.  Organic metal.  Colossal.

The Embarcadero : Toad is there, as one of the ones protesting.

Phoebe, Mindee and Celeste — The Stepford Cuckoos.  Telepathic hive mind.  They are there with Cyclops.  Cyclops tells Toad that he’s been beating him since he was a teenager.  Cyclops takes care of Toad but gets a brick to the head, just like in Marvels.

Dark Avengers Uncanny X-Men Utopia Cyclops Brick Marvels 2 Iceman Brick

Except that Iceman was there to take the first one.

Cyclops gets up with the aid of a police officer.  Cyclops wonders if the police can’t handle the riots, who can.

There is an ad for Captain America Reborn, he’s been dead since the end of Civil War.

San Francisco Bay; HAMMER West.  Norman has gathered his Avengers team.

Hawkeye — aka Bullseye.  World’s Deadliest Assassin, unrepentant.  The X-Men captions were were a light yellow background with their name in black text and their descriptions in red.  Unfortunately, the Avengers’ captions are black background, their name in nice readable white next and their description – dark blue text that is extremely hard to read.  Bullseye wonders why Norman isn’t suiting up.

Norman Osborn — aka Iron Patriot.  Director of HAMMER.  Modified Stark Industries War Suit.  Team Leader.  Norman threatens to give Bullseye even more meds.  Some of the villains need to be on medication to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Norman assigns each Avenger a section of the city.

Bob Reynolds — The Sentry.  Near omnipotent and godlike.  Schizophrenia.  Sentry will be staying behind with Norman.  He is too big of a threat.

Daken Akihiro — Wolverine.  Son of Wolverine.  A man of wealth and taste.  Once they are done with protecting the city, he recommends they eat at Chez Panisse.

There is a double page ad for Kia’s The Soul, the left side page is wasted.

The Castro.  Some lady mutants are tired of being mistreated by the flatscans.

Dr. Karla Sofen — Ms. Marvel.  Flight, intangible, energy blasts.  Being promoted from the B-Team of Thunderbolts, Moonstar is now Ms. Marvel, in her classic leggy outfit.  She blasts the mutants into submission.  Pretty good decision to have her pretend to be Ms. Marvel, as their power sets are essentially the same.

Hayes Valley : Colossus has just beaten down Rockslide.

Mac Gargan — Spider-Man.  Controlled by Venom symbiotic.  Crazy.   The former Scorpion is now the second Venom (or is that a third).  Spider-Man starts kicking Colossus’ dumb arse.

There is an ad for Incredible Hulk Issue 600.

The Embarcadero : The police are trying to calm down everybody but it isn’t working.  Hawkeye (I wish I could combine Hawkeye and Bullseye into a clever name.  Maybe If I took one half of one’s name and combined it with another half of the other’s name.  Perhaps . . . Bullseye!  or Hawkeye!  dang it!)   HawkBullseye shoots arrow but not at anyone in particular.

Telegraph Hill : Onyxx was the guy I didn’t know who looks like Rockside but with a different head.  Cyclops gets a sit-rep from the gathered students.  No one has seen Emma in a while.

There is an ad for New Mutants 3, Dani versus Legion.

Mayor Sinclair is on the phone with Norman.  He can’t come to City Hall but he is sending a special agent.

Ares.  The God of War.  Literally.  Is that agent.  He’s in the Dark Avengers as he like to fight.  As simple as that.

Cyclops seess Ares and realizes that he has no one who can take out Ares.

Meanwhile, Norman is talking to Emma.  Norman has an offer for Emma.  Norman wants to have his own team of mutants.

There is an ad for Dark Wolverine, as Daken has taken over his father’s title.  Don’t worry, Logan still has Origins and countless minis to his name.  This was during the Dark Reign branding, so there were several “Dark” titles.

Emma turns her back to the camera and we can see the inside of the folder Norman gave her.  Unfortunately, all of the pages we see are blank.  There isn’t even any lines on the pages, to substitute for real words.

Meanwhile, we see that Beast is in a prison cell.  Iron Patriot starts a news conference.  Cyclops is being arrested.  Beast is hearing a voice in his head, but it is faint.  Iron Patriot brings out Professor Xavier.  Cyclops breaks out of police custody.  We see Emma inside HAMMER West but now she is wearing black.  Issue ends with Xavier in a prison cell, revealing to Beast, that their powers are being dampen.

The next two issues deal with Norman’s new team . . . The Dark X-Men.  Which consists of Cloak & Dagger, Emma and Namor, Mimic, Weapon Omega (the guy who killed Alpha Flight) and Xavier – who really is Mystique.

I wonder if Mystique and Xavier laughed about this fiasco while they were boning and making that weird baby of theirs.

Ultimatum 4

Writer Jeph Loeb

Artist David Finch

Inker Danny Miki

Colorist Aspen’s Peter Steigerwald

Letterer RS & Comicraft

Cover Dated June 2009

Part Four of Five

This may be the worst way to end Daredevil Month but that’s just how the order came about.  Daredevil doesn’t appear at all in this issue.  For Daredevil’s fate in Ultimatum, read 131, Shadowcat doesn’t appear in that issue, so I no longer own it.

Ultimatum combined covers

This cover is part of a larger image.

http://cmro.travis-starnes.com/story-arc-list.php?arc=360

According to this website’s reading order, it goes Ultimate Spider-Man 132, Ultimatum 4, Ultimate Spider-Man 133 – so that explains roughly, the whereabouts of Shadowcat finding her ex-boyfriend’s mask.

So, of the main tie-ins and such, I own Ultimatum 1, 4 and 5 / Ultimate Spider-Man 132 and 133 / X-Men Requim.  I’m sure I own some of the build up issues but these above, I could verify.  I know I own Ultimate Spider-Man Annual Three and X-Men / Fantastic Four Annuals, that have the Ultimatum banner.

That is one of the great things about Ultimate Shadowcat, she makes appearances in these Ultimate events.  She will be a major figure Post-Ultimatum, but she was in prior ones as well.

One of the huge criticisms of this series isn’t the death toll but how gruesome the deaths are.  Unnecessarily so.

Inside front cover ad is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine Milk ad.  This is to tie in with Wolverine Origins.

What I like about Ultimatum is, no matter what, Magneto won.  The series starts with him spinning Earth on its axis, causing catastrophic disasters.  The world will never be the same again.  Unless there is a one year time jump and the world has mostly returned to the same.  Except humans have a very real reason to hate one specific mutant.

Heroes who have died in this event, prior to this issue – Dazzler, Wasp, Giant Man, Thor and Nightcrawler.  Thor will come back, eventually.  I’m not sure how, as dead was meant to mean dead, in the Ultimate Universe.  Which for the most part, is how it has been.  Which is why this was a real turning point.

Onto the issue!

The home of Doctor Strange.  Sorcerer Supreme.  Soho.  New York City.  Spider-Man and Hulk.  That Night.  Spider-Man warns Hulk to not destroy Strange’s home as it keeps the mumbo jumbo inside.  Hulk smashes mumbo jumbo.  Oh Hulk.

There is a giant explosion and Spider-Man passes out.

Ultimatum 4 Shadowcat 1

Kitty Pryde.  Soon after.  Poor Shadowcat finds her ex-boyfriend’s mask.   As news reports come out regarding all of the death, Shadowcat makes the assumption that this mask means Spider-Man is dead.

Dormammu is fighting his old enemy, Doctor Strange.  Nice that we get a quick recap of Ultimate Strange’s origins.  He is part of a long line of Sorcerer Supremes but he is the last in the line as he’s still pretty young.  Dormammu has taken the Human Torch prisoner, as well.  Dormammu wraps a cloth around Strange and strangles him, we actually see his head explode and his headless body.

Invisible Woman and Thing show up, too late for Strange but hopefully not to late for her brother.

Lower Manhattan.  Hulk and X-Men.  That Night.  Hulk was trying to help Strange (I’m not sure how) and he is being chased by both the Army and Cyclops and Storm.  The X-Men are leading him straight to Wolverine and Jean Grey.  Hulk recognizes Wolverine from that time he ripped him in half.  Wolverine hopes to not repeat that.  Jean calms the Hulk down, now that he is distracted.  At some point, the Hulk lost his pants.

The White House.  The Supreme Power Universe.  Nick Fury, Exiled Head of SHIELD.  Reed Richards, Doom, Zarda and Arcanna.  Time Unknown.  So this takes place after Ultimate Power, the crossover between Supreme Power and the Ultimate Universe, it ends with Fury over in that universe.  Supreme Power was like the Ultimate Version of the Supreme Squadron’s universe – which isn’t complicated at all.  Arcanna is an Asgardian.

They are there to bring Fury back to their universe.  Well, this is Zarda (Power Princess) universe but I believe we traded her for Fury.

There is an add for Wolverine Origins, the video game, which I highly recommend on either the XBox 360 or PS3, the PS2 version was a lesser version in every respect.

Reed explains to Fury that Magneto tilted the Earth on its axis and now they need him to fix it.  Fury knew something like this would happened without him in charge.  Fury makes Doom explain his part in this.  Damme had Scarlet Witch murdered, so that set off Magneto.  This causes Reed and Zarda to attack Van Damme.  Arcanna gets everybody back to the Ultimate Universe.

Ultimatum 4 Shadowcat 2

Aunt May’s House.  Peter Parker’s (Spider-Man) home.  Kitty Pryde and Wolverine.  Dawn.  This is probably my favorite scene in this event, as this saves Shadowcat from death that the next issue brings.  Kitty and Peter’s relationship also brought her to the main stage and took her out of the X-Men, for a time, which saved me from some bad comics.

The big battle is coming and this is the calm before the storm.  Kitty explains there was a flash of magic light and Peter was gone.  Kitty isn’t sure if he is dead or not.

Ultimatum 4 Shadowcat 3

Wolverine gives Kitty a box, if he doesn’t return, she is to open it.  Kitty, being an uncanny hero, wants to be part of the big battle.  Wolverine wants her to stay behind and take care of Iceman.

Ultimatum 4 Shadowcat 4

Finch does draw Kitty way too skinny here but that is a great image.

Wolverine really doesn’t want her to come along as, once this is over, she needs to be part of the rebuilding process.  Kitty is one of the best (I would have said the best, but that is me) and they hug one last time.  Or possibly, for the first time.

Magneto’s Citadel.  Above the Artic Circle.  Morning.  Once again, if someone is quoting scripture, it comes off insane.  Plus, Magneto is narrating to himself so that’s not a good sign.  Angel comes busting through the window and gets a punch in.  Magneto sends Sabretooth to fight Angel and Sabretooth violently steps on Angel’s head, killing him.  Hawkeye fires an arrow into Sabretooth’s right eye.

Magneto is running around with Thor’s hammer (I believe anyone can pick it up, if you can get it away from Thor).  Arcanna wants the hammer back but she brought a big metal sword to a fight with the Master of Magnetism.  She does get a great hit in, in that she slices off his right arm – that was holding the hammer).  He takes the sword from her and slits her throat with it.

She’s an Asgardian, so she is still standing there when Captain America busts through another window, claiming this is over now.  Magneto rushes away.  His path is blocked by Beast, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Hawkeye, Iron Man and Storm – as the issue ends.

Ultimatum is continued in Ultimate Spider-Man 123 (which is a misprint, they meant 132.  Shadowcat isn’t in 123 so I don’t own it but I do own 132) and I own 133, the last issue of Ultimate Spider-Man until that title’s third relaunch and they renew the numbering for the big 150th issue.  Ultimatum concludes in issue five, which I also own.  Then there are aftermath issues, Requiem : Spider-Man / Fantastic Four / X-Men, I only own the X-Men issue.

We’ll get to these issues eventually.  For now, Daredevil Month has concluded.  Come back tomorrow for . . . . AVENGERS MONTH!

Note : This issue takes place during Exiles 100 – which I will be reviewing soon

http://www.newsarama.com/24277-artist-francis-tsai-passes-away.html

Sadly, on April 23, 2015 – we lost artist Francis Tsai.  I only own this issue of his, that he did the cover, and his art work is used in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Update 1, that I plan on reviewing next year.  So great that he got to draw Magik on the cover, that has most members of Exiles, up to that point.  Sadly, Magik nor Cat (who is next to Sabretooth, but I thought that was Psylocke) don’t appear in this issue.

I’m providing the Marvel Database link for any footnotes and such –

http://marvel.wikia.com/Exiles:_Days_of_Then_and_Now_Vol_1_1

Chapter One : A World Without Heroes

In a dimension where Hulk left his Planet Hulk storyline and took charge of the Annihilation Wave, he brought it Earth.  Most heroes died, trying to stop the Hulk.  Of course, the only hero left is Wolverine.

I should mention that, none of the Exiles appear until the end – this issue is more setting up a concept of the Exiles, as a revolving team.

Two months later, on the same Earth, we check in with what is left of the Xavier Institute.  Quentin Quire (without the pink hair, he is a brunette) is with his girlfriend, Sophie.  Sophie has the power, now, to see glimpses of the future – but only in her dream.  She dreamed that a team known as, The Exiles, will come to save them.  We see who else makes up the refugee heroes – Patriot, Speedball, Mindee & Esme, Julie Powers of Power Pack and Wiccan.  Quentin plans on jumping into the time stream and finding this team of ragtag heroes.

Chapter Two : A Quentin in Time

Quentin Quire lands on a Earth and instantly meets his fellow Rioters – Blob, himself and Beak, on this Earth.  They are all drugged out on Kick.  Quentin takes them down with the help of Nighthawk, who was only a boy from issue 45 of Exiles.  Which I do own but I don’t want to review at this issue, as I don’t want to go down too many rabbit holes in these reviews.

I’ve since read Exiles 100 and there isn’t really much of a tie-in where this issue falls into it.

Nighthawk recalls the adventure from issue 45.  This Earth put up a statue of the Exiles.

Chapter Three : Legacy

The Tallus, that Nighthawk gave to Quentin, tells him to place flowers along a memorial of names.  This is the Earth that Spider-Woman (Mary Jane) who was a member of the Exiles.  First seen in Exiles 20, which I also own.  Turns out, this Mary Jane died in Spider-Verse 1.  Mary Jane talks about her former lover, Sunfire.  Luke Cage, who has the powers of Iron Fist, also tells the story.

There are some ads, that helps remind me of the era.  Spider-Man 3 was coming out and Ultimate Secrets, an Ultimate Handbook, came out in January 2008.  I own it.

Chapter Four : World Tour

Quentin meets Jennifer Swenson, Spitfire.  She wants to destroy the armor that her father makes, like an Iron Man version of the Sentinels.  Apparently, this is from New Universe, seen during Exiles 72 & 73 (I don’t own these) – if I’m reading Marvel Database correctly.  Quentin tries to convince Jennifer to use the armor for good, she doesn’t want to be a hero.  The military shows up and tries to kill them.  She flies away with Quentin, and decides that being a hero isn’t all that bad.

Chapter Five : The Lost Son

On the Age of Apocalypse Earth, Quentin meets Wild Child (think a smaller leaner Sabretooth).

Chapter Six : Meet the Exiles

In the Crystal Palace, the Time Broker (the fake face of the bugs who actually operate the palace) greets Quentin Quire.  Quentin wants the Exiles, and the Time Broker tells him that he has already met them.  If Quentin agrees to join the team, their first Earth to save will be his original one. He super agrees and disappears.

Chapter Seven : Home

The New Exiles show up, they fight off some giant green bugs.

Chapter Eight : Moving On

Blink and Sabretooth are observing this new team.  Blink isn’t sure if this was enough.  The heroes that they put on the Planet Hulk Annihilation had died, so the replacement heroes are not going to be running into duplicates.

The issue ends with a fun reveal that Blink’s Time Broker (who looks like an overweight butler) wasn’t the same as Sabretooth’s when he was part of Weapon X (which is a lousy evil opposite of the Exiles).  their time broker looked like a sexy blond secretary.

There is an Exiles handbook profile.

There is a nice Cover Character Guide –

Daredevil Film

In 2003, we were treated to Ben Affleck’s Daredevil.

Daredevil Film

I remember being the first one there, one February morning, and realizing that this film isn’t going to make anywhere near the money Spider-Man did, only a few months earlier.

Daredevil Director's Cut

I like the film but once the Director’s Cut came out, that’s all I can watch.  It, coincidentally, has less Jennifer Garner, which may be what makes it more into a movie.  There are more scenes involving the plot and such.

Thanks to MrKARproducitonslife for hosting this video!

I was a giant Ben Affleck film, circa 2003 – though I still am but I’m so far behind in my movie watching, largely because of how often Affleck worked with Kevin Smith.

Here is the trailer –

Thanks to QualityIsNumber1 for hosting this video!

I was perfectly cool with the late Michael Clark Duncan portraying Kingpin, that just made perfect sense to me.

I imagine that this film is fun to watch at the ol’ Affleck / Garner home, their children must really like it.

I mostly remember the film for the Evanscenece songs.  (which isn’t a great sign)

Bring Me to Live

I didn’t want to go negative with this post, as I do enjoy the film – though the graphics are super dated.  There were two moments, when I watched it in the theater, that struck me as just plain wrong.

One being when Joey Pants throws the match down, to reveal the Double Ds.  Like, seriously?  That is a crime scene!!!  You can’t just be throwing matches on the ground and the cops are more like “whoa cool” instead of “hey buddy, you just tampered with evidence!”

The second, and it is right at the end, so you leave the theater thinking about how silly the moment is.  When Joey Pants (who did a decent job as Ben Urich) has his expose on Daredevil, all written up.  He then presses the delete button, just once, and it instantly starts erasing the entire document from word to word, in backwards order.  The heck!?!  I’m glad my computer doesn’t have that “delete everything” button.  They should color that death button something else, so that you don’t accidentally erase your entire thesis paper!  Good grief, that was bad!

Wolverines 1

Wolverines 1

Penciler Nick Bradshaw

Inker Walden Wong

Art Pages 17 – 18 Alisson Borges

Colorist Fco Plascencia

Letterer VC’s Cory Petit

I wish the cover didn’t remind us of how silly Wolverine died.

I like how the two miniseries – Logan Legacy and Weapon X Program, funnel into this series.  Weapon X Program sets up Shogun and Logan Legacy gets the big name characters involved.

Six Months From Now . . . Mystique is covered in blood.  This is an odd place for this comment but I really miss reading Nick Bradshaw’s art.  Mystique has to walk out the door, after accomplishing everything that her Destiny said.

Wolverines 1 Shogun a Wolverines 1 Shogun b

Right now.  Sabretooth, who is still inverted from AXIS, so he’s a good guy – is fighting Thunderball of the Wrecking Crew.  Shogun is fighting Wrecker, which makes sense, as they are the leaders of their two teams.  Lady Deathstrike is fighting a lady Bulldozer and Piledriver.  It looks like Skel is trying to help her.

X23, Daken and Junk are amazed to see what they are seeing.

Wolverines 1 Shogun 1a Wolverines 1 Shogun 1b

An hour ago.  Nevada.  Shogan has lead the Wolverines and the Weapon X Program experiments to the site of Wolverine’s death, Paradise.  For some reason, the Weapon X folks are wearing battle armor.  That is probably explained in Logan Legacy 7.

Neuro states that this facility should be stripped clean.

Endo and X23 have a nice chat, both have been transformed by the Weapon X facility.

Wolverines 1 Shogun 2

The united folks see the Wrecking Crew driving up in a jeep.  Mystique reveals that she is the banking this team, probably from all of that money Bendis wrote her stealing in Al New and Uncanny.  The A-Listers need the Weapon X people, as they can die as well.  So both groups need each other.

Shogun keeps hinting at the agenda, we’ll learn it eventually.  Sabretooth explains that he changed, so Wolverine died, AXIS happened, Logan Legacy occured and now this series.

It is weird, right, that Daken and Sabretooth are wearing the same outfit?

Wolverines 1 Shogun 3

They keep hinting at what the item is, it is clearly Wolverine PLUS the cover shows that.

Daken calling Sabretooth, killer, seems pointless.  Everyone on this team is a killer.

I like Lady Deathstrike’s reaction to Neuro saying that he is dying.  Everyone is dying, sure it sucks that some do before their believed time, but in the end, we are all dying.

Wolverines 1 Shogun 4

Shogun and Sabretooth are having a nice chat.  Ogun is telling Sharp to kill Sabretooth.  What history do those two even share?

Victor is concern about Daken.

I sort of like bad guys calling themselves, bad guys.  Why pretend to be otherwise?

Skel is failing miserably to hit on Lady Deathstrike.  They come across Piledriver and the new Bulldozer.

Daken, X23 and Junk are exploring.  Daken is not on his game here.  Is he still suffering from whatever officially brought him back to life after the Apocalypse Twins made him into one of their Horsemen?  I wasn’t sure if he was brought fully to life, as Banshee seems to be dead still.  As is Sentry.

They find what they are looking for, the adamantium covered Wolverine.  Is this how the X-Men found out he was dead, by X23 seeing the ‘statue’ and letting the X-Men know what happened?  That must be it.

Endo asks Mystique what it feels like to shapeshift and realizing what the real her is.  Mystique’s secret?  She doesn’t care.

Wolverines 1 Shogun 5

Ogun apparently has been keeping up with supervillains.

Is that why there is a new lady Bulldozer, so that she can fight Lady Deathstrike?

Daken is about to secure his father’s statue form when Mister Sinister appears!  Instead of his Marauders, he has hired the Wrecking Crew – and paying them by the hour.  Are they going to file time sheets?

There is an ad for “No More Mutants’ with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver that was teased at a comic book convention, now we know this is for the newly relaunced Uncanny Avengers Volume Two.

Mister Sinister gets his hands dirty and in a big bad way!  He rips off Daken’s left arm and his left eye.  Which is pretty messed up.  Sinister doesn’t want to bother with X23 as she is only a clone.  At least he didn’t also throw in her face that she is a former prostitute.

Sinister teleports out of there and Junk is confused why X23 cares about Daken.  Issue ends with her revealing to Junk that Daken no longer has his healing factor.

I’m set to get issues nine through twelve but I have to buy issues two through eight (if Shogun is in them, which I imagine he is) so I will try to buy these issues at Hastings.  If not, hopefully DBCS has them eventually at a steep discount – which was my original plan.

. . .

Like we did last year, I want to keep track of the Top Ten Comics of 2015 –

1.  Wolverines 1

2.  Death of Wolverine : Weapon X Program 5

Trial of the Incredible Hulk

Posted by John Klein III on April 26, 2015

It dawns on me that I wasn’t going to have any tie-in to Daredevil’s first Live Action Adaption.

1989 Daredevil Trial of Incredible Hulkjpg

That will not do!

Trial of Incredible Hulk

This was an amazing return to the Incredible Hulk television series, starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.  This TV film came out on May 7, 1989.

This had Rex Smith as Matt Murdock / Daredevil and Sliders alumni, John Rhys-Davis as the Kingpin.  Though he never called that.

Such a fun team-up between two characters!  I wish this was a success to spur on a Daredevil television series.  It would have been like Law & Order, but with the same guy doing both sides.

This is also fun for being Stan Lee’s first cameo in a live action production.

Here is the official trailer –

Thanks to BryansHulkPage for hosting this video!

He is also hosting the opening credits, as well

Here is the scene of Matt Murdock Meeting David (Bruce) Banner

Thanks to Zaki Hasan for hosting this video!

This film is the middle of the trilogy of reunion films.  First was Return (with Thor), the Trial (with Daredevil) and Death (with what I call, Black Widow).

HoKogan1991 made this tribute video of Rex Smith as Daredevil

Thanks for hosting that video!

If you get a chance, I can’t recommend this film enough!  The lack of mirrors in a blind man’s apartment isn’t something I would have thought about before seeing it, either.

Here is a video that shows off the Kingpin in action

Thanks to X2Magneto for hosting the video!  Great screen name too!
